I've been wanting to try a custom ROM on my Verizon m8. I have used weaksauce to gain root access and just recently got adb up and running thanks to you fine folks (I was having some driver issues). My next step is to gain s-off and I downloaded firewater and followed the instructions. I'm able to get all the way to final step "/data/local/tmp/firewater" and nothing happens. Firewater does not run. Anybody have any ideas why? Thanks a ton, I'm new to this and have learned a lot from the forums.
Are you making sure to wait for weaksauce to regain root before running the su command? Either way, firewater is probably not going to work for you, as it's now out of date. The current working exploit is sunshine, which is a commercial application and will cost $25. But so far, they've been well spent for me!

I redownloaded firewater and it worked fine. I'm now s-off and have twrp installed. Next stop new Rom. Any suggestions as to which one to try?
Thanks again guys. Appreciate it.
I want to try Android Revolution HD on mine, but can't get it to flash. If you try that one and it works I'd be interested to know...

Guys,
I just got a replacement phone from Verizon and need your help to get it S-OFF. I tried both the firewater method and the Rumrunner method. Neither of them worked.
I installed Weaksauce to gain root and tried firewater (method 1) first. after trying all day and night to get it to work. I decided to try Rumrunner with the same result...
Android Version : 4.3
Sence Version: 5.0
Software number: 2.10.605.1
Base 1.12.40.1112-2
Hboot: 1.55.0000
Anything else you guys need from to help me figure out why I can S-OFF?
Thanks!

I don't know much about weaksauce since I haven't had to use it, but for 4.3 the temp root method of firewater is what you use.

ive tried both ways on my computer.. do you think if i used someone elses computer it would work?
What Operating system are you on? I had win 7 64bit.
uninstall everything phone related HTC Sync, drivers, everything..... install this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2376761 (worked for me)
grab ADB and fastboot from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
Use weaksauce to gain root and make sure you look at your phone to grant it Superuser access...
and honestly just keep trying. I tried for maybe 50 times before it worked. Switched USB port every time until it worked.

so i reinstalled all drivers and out of the 3 times i tried i got to the second bottle and i switched usb ports each time so at least im getting somewhere haha
[SOLVED]
Here are my thoughts after got it S-off on the second night.
I was having problems with adb disconnecting my device or was it my computer, not sure.
I got to "adb shell", then go into phone and tap the Weaksauce app and tap on "agree", then open SU app and changed the setting to "grant".
The dialog window in SU will still pops up and you hit allow for Superuser. I think this is the reason why it never chugged before here
You have to input the "su" command in the adb window
After "grant" it is able to S-Off, you know it when the promtp windows says " Your device is now S-Off..."
ps. For some reasons Weaksauce is not stable on my phone it does take way too long to root the device and sometimes not even does it.
This may sounds broken to some ppl lol, but this is my first post and first root.
So Cheeers
Congrats. Weaksauce is just a temp root, now that your s-off, you can remove weaksauce, flash a recovery, and then flash superuser thru recovery for full permanent root.
ok
nope still not working.. im thinking that it has to be a problem with disconnecting and then it loses the root cause whenever i restart the phone i have to enable root with weaksauce again.

It should automatically give you root access after you installed weaksauce and SuperSU. It takes maybe 30-60 seconds after it completely boots up.

I have been at this for over a week. I've gotten as far as the 8th bottle but still haven't been able to get S-OFF.
When I first started trying firewater was version 5, now it's up to version 8.
At this point I try it once a day every night(making sure to download the latest firewater each time). I just imagine that sometime it will work.
You can try to talk to beaups in the #firewater IRC channel. He tried helping me before saying "okay Ill try to fix it in the next few days." That was over a week ago but considering he's only getting donations for this I don't hold it against him for it not working instantly for me. Head to the IRC and see if he can help out. Otherwise, I'd say keep trying.

Hey guys. Not my first android phone. Had the vivid which was on pacman 4.4.4 beta. I seem to be lots when it comes to rooting/flashing this phone. Main issue is they show att, verison, etc... where my vivid was just one for all. I can remember my desire was like that but can't remember what roms were compatible with bell.
On another note, is there one rom that goes beyond the rest that everyone loves? Been back and forth between paranoid and pacman over the years. Are they good on this device?
Thanks for any info.

Can just follow some of the guides on rooting the phone that you can find in the international forum. For Sprint, Verizon so forth it'll be different(CDMA vs GSM).
Can use any ROM on the device.
Can't say which ROM is best, they don't allow posts/discussions like that on the forum. It's a personal choice as such you should try them all and choose for yourself which is best for your needs/usage.
thanks. Guess I'll start with paranoid Wow can't believe how easy to root and s-off this device is.

Did the full adb thing. Everything looked good. Started the countdown saying it could take a few minutes. About 30 seconds later it gave me a weird message saying you can't and never will be able to s-off your phone. was about 5 lines in my command line window.
Never s-off'd my vivid, never seen the point but this one looked so easy.
I do have super user installed and shows up in my apps. Noticed just now that when I go under superuser, adb is no longer in the allowed. Might have to start over lol.

I am a noob to the htc side of things and am learning about s-off and bootloader unlocking. I have a verizon m7 and it is on the latest update so after trying for 2hrs to get rumrunner working I read that the only s-off method that works for this version is Sunshine. Now I am only going to be using this phone for a few weeks until I can get my hands on a nexus 6 and it has a cracked screen so I just can't justify spending to unlock the bootloader. Is there any way possible to unlock the 5.28.605.2 version for free? And if not that version specifically is there a way to downgrade? I want this so I can run an AOSP rom but if there is no way without paying I might as well just rock stock sense. Also no disrespect to the sunshine devs they have done great work I just can't afford it right now. Thanks!
Edit: Also is there a way to get root without S-off/bootloader unlock so that I can atleast use Xposed? Again sorry for the noob questions im so used to having a nexus that all these things are new to me.
Being locked and s-on, any way you would get root would be temporary and any changes to system would be reset upon reboot. Only way for permanent root is s-off or unlock. (This means xposed will not work.
Only software to s-off and unlock for recent ota is sunshine. You can look at java card or jtag services, but they are more expensive than sunshine.
You cannot downgrade without s-off.

I really would love to run paranoid android on this phone but its not so much the price its the fact that I'm not going to use this phone for too long im just waiting for the nexus 6. That being said if it were closer to $10 i probably would have done it. Also sense 6 is way more tolerable than older versions I've used.

If you're on lollipop, pretty much only things I can think of that have worked are Kingroot (You have to try it MULTIPLE MULTIPLE TIMES) , N if that doesn't work on the latest version, try older versions (I remember old versions working for a few ppl, I believe it was like version 4.5 or 4.50.-something). The way kingroot works, u have to run it like sometimes 10-20-30 times of it saying failed, and eventually it works. I successfully did it on 2 of my friends m7's... (Not my own, I Sunshined back on 4.4.2)
Then, when/if u get kingroot to work, run sunshine...
Alright I'll keep trying kingroot

Only other way for a vZw m7 is to find somebody who has a Java card, and make arrangements to ship / drive your phone to them, and they'll b able to S-off, bootloader unlock, & root it within 5 mins. Java cards from what I understand r VERY expensive, but over in the vzw M9 thread, there's a whole thread that's just/only for the topic of arranging to get your phone unlocked with a Java card owner, as Sunshine still to this day has never worked for the VZW variant of the M9. I know there are some VERY reputable and well known devs over there who would be willing to hook u up and have been doing it for others on xda for over a year now, (for quite cheap I understand) -although I highly recommend tossing em a donation at least for their troubles.... Maybe @dottat can point u in the right direction

Danngg.. I wonder if this is a result of Google's continuous security updates? When I ran Kingroot to temp root before running Sunshine, it rooted on like... the first or second try... this was also after I'd foolishly tried every single root exploit that were designed in the days of Android 1.x and Gingerbread, which might have weakened some security if it didn't break it completely.. The binaries are called psneuter and gingerbreak, if you wanna give it a shot. There's also Rumrush, Firewater, Towelroot... probably others that I can't think of. None of them are likely to give you root, but if you use all of them and then use Kingroot, maybe Kingroot will work. I would personally do that sooner than running Kingroot and having my phone reboot 300 times...
So, I guess all you can do is keep trying.

I did it as follows. I used KingRoot and obtained its form of root. Then I ran Sunshine, which requires that you first are rooted. Sunshine reboots mid-process, losing root. So I ran KingRoot again, obtaining root. Then I ran Sunshine and it took up where it had rebooted, and got s-off. Then I found a script to eliminate the KingRoot temporary root. It did not exactly fit my file system, so I by hand made all of the changes indicated in the script (some of the changes in the script were not really important, some referred to files I did not have, etc., but I was able to change the important ones.) When I rebooted, I got the SuperSu pop-up to update, which I did, and ended up with a Verizon M7 with unlocked bootloader, s-off, and rooted.

Here are two sites I had left in my bookmarks:
http://zidroid.com/how-to-get-ride-and-replace-kinguser-with-supersu-app/
https://androidmtk.com/replace-kinguser-with-supersu
You could probably find more.
The only way this worked for me was to read the script and figure out what the critical replacements are. You should note that the critical steps involve files that have the immutable bit set, and the scripts show a two step process of first changing the immutable bit, and then deleting the file. I did these by hand, since some of the files that needed replacing were not in the sub-folders indicated in the scripts.
HI, fellow m7vzw user here. Let me share my experience. Around mid 2015 last year HTC released an update for lollipop that patched kingroot to be used to root its device. But all hope is not lost as you can doengrade back to the version of lollipop that is vulnerable to Kingroot exploit. I discussed this method last year around October with some other htc one m7 vzw owners. One of them pointed out that as a failsafe in case something went wrong with htc's firmware, it can be downgraded back ONE version to avoid that faulty firmware. For example if they release a version in January, February and March (March firmware being faulty as example). You can downgtade back to the previous firmware using fastboot and the required firmware files. We never tried to downgtafe again from Febraury to January because when we were already rooted and s-off after one downgrade ???.All files on links for the files are located on the Verzion HTC one forum..... i'll try to find the post containing proof for you.
