Tablet and evo? Worth it?

I'm thinking about getting a honeycomb tablet, since I'm always using my phone around the house, I feel like id get alot of use outta it. But are they that much better than the evo, is it worth it to have both?
Just a note, I'm soon going to be overseas with only wifi for a year. I'm debating Between tablet or a tv since I don't wanna take the 55" led. Mainly for PS3.
Any thoughts.

I have multiples: Sprint Hero, Sprint EVO 4G, Acer Iconia A500, Viewsonic gTablet
The Acer is the only one that has Honeycomb (right now it is running 3.1...I was trying to get 3.2 to run, but I'm having troubles with Netflix on that version). It has troubles at times with touch (sometimes I can get it to run really fast, other times I have lag). Other than that, it's a good tablet and I use it for quite a number of things (more recently, Netflix). Honeycomb, however, doesn't have nearly the apps available as Gingerbread does (not sure why...I haven't had issues with the apps I put on it). Also, careful with this one as I already cracked one by pushing on it too hard. Battery life is pretty good on it.
The Viewsonic is running CyanogenMod 7.0.3 (Gingerbread). It works really well, too. Unfortunately, it doesn't have built-in GPS, so I have to use an external GPS for it. So, I do have problems with programs that need a GPS, if I forget to turn on the external one. It's heavier than the Acer, but it feels sturdier. Battery life is good (not as good as the Acer). I use that when I need two tablets (there are times for that...just not often).
If you can afford one, go ahead and get one. I would definitely root it and put a custom rom. You'll find XDA developers are quite a bit faster in getting the latest updates than the manufacturer.

This is out of character for me and I really hate apple to hell. lol. but go get an IPad, it's actually developed lol. and better quality than the androids. I REALLLLLY HATE apple. I wish apples would all die and never exist. But oh well. lol.

I also have the Viewsonic gTablet, running GtabComb 3.2. If you tether it to your phone's wifi, it can do everything an iPad can do apart from GPS and photos/video recording... but if you've got your phone, you can make up the difference. Plus, it has expandable memory and a USB port.

I avoided apple for a long time also. I have an evo, archos70 (love it), couple beater android tablets that will end up in the walls of my house for A/V and lighting control when I get it all how I want, and now an ipad. App wise, android is a huge loser here. Once jailbroken, the ipad is pretty nice for customization. It also kills all my other tablets except the archos for battery. It beats the archos even with a bigger screen, but not by a ton.
Long story short, yes. You are used to using your phone for access, a tablett is just that much better. Any good tablet.

the reason why the IPad is better than just about all the android tabs out is because a tablet is more like a computer. That is what apple does , they do computers. so of course they would have the know how to make a amazing tablet. Android is still a phone OS. even Honeycomb is still heavily based on a phones hardware. Don't get me wrong i wouldn't buy an Apple if my life was on the line, but they do make a good tablet. I personally have a Archos 70 IT and love it. No it doesn't have a tegra chip or GPS but it does just fine for everyday use. and if you want GPS buy a key chain Bluetooth GPS receiver. they are pretty cheep and most are extremely accurate. and if you are going to be taking it with you places it is way more portable than more of the larger tablets. Or you could wait a few months for the Gen 9 to be released with, i believe but am not for sure, has the tegra chip and GPS and a few more upgrades.
But all this is just my opinion.

Thanks guys, I will not own an ipad. I agree they are nice. But that doesn't change my mind. I just went and tried a Xoom. It was nice though I'm leaning toward the thrive because of the removable battery and full usb jack.

Well the tf is less expensive, but to get full use out of the ports you need to buy the dock. I am currently in a pickle deciding on the iconia or the tf. I have a coupon for 100 off at staples if you want. You can actually find it in the iconia or tf forums. I have a thread started in general getting comparisons of both.

Not an acer fan. Really it is only the appearance of the the thrive keeping me away. It def has the most features, minus the non ips screen and the huge charger. However all the ports and removable battery are nice. How can you hard reset the others if they freeze up etc if you can't pull the battery.?
I played with them all today briefly and thought the tf felt very sturdy and had a great screen so I'm torn.

First, yes, I do think that there's a place in my life for a tablet, a smartphone, and a laptop. At first I didn't think a tablet fit in, but I'm coming around. Still, nobody's quite gotten it 100% right yet.
Lack of USB in the tablet itself is a big turnoff for me on the Transformer. If it had that, I think I'd be sold on it. It's not quite as light or thin as the Galaxy or the iPad 2 (which I'm looking at for comparison, but don't plan to buy), but it's close enough. It feels great in the hand too. I'm not opposed to buying the keyboard, but I don't like that there's no USB support without it.
The Toshiba is noticeably bigger and heavier, but the full size SD and full size USB are both strong draws. I do not like the feel of it though. The rubber back just made it feel clunky to me -- not just heavy, but clunky. I do realize that getting the full size ports has to come with some tradeoffs.
Acer is tempting, but I've never considered them a quality brand. I dunno. Design's OK...not bad, not great. The USB port is keeping me from eliminating it.
The Samsung would be a very strong contender if it had even a microSD card for expansion. USB support via an adapter isn't as nice as having it built in, but it's acceptable. I might be able to live without microSD given that it does have USB storage support, but it's less than ideal. The design is great, particularly the metallic slate version -- I know it's not really metal, but the texture feels nice.
The Xoom's not bad, but it's a bit heavy and thick. Not as bad as the Toshiba though.
Lenovo's got a pair coming, and the version in the Thinkpad line appears to have full size USB and SD. I'll be interested to see how that one turns out. And HTC's got to have something coming soon in the 10.1" Honeycomb size eventually.

What would you like to see on the Note 3?

I know the Note 3 won't come out till mid to late next year. What improvement or features would you like to see? Let me start.
1.8-2.0 ghz quad core processor, 3500+ mah battery, 5.5" screen is big enough, output projector, 3gb ram, 3-5mp front camera, better camera lens, android 4.2-5.0, 1080p display, super loud speaker with no distortion.

but seriously, the Note 2 just got here and I am finding cool new features that I love. I would want more s-pen capability, more multi tasking features, of course latest version of Android, Screen recording as shown on the ad, maybe a better design of the phone. So far I love the phone and spend more time on it than on a computer.

What I would like to see from the Note 3? Since the Note 2 just came out I couldn't say off hand. The one thing I would love to see from Samsung is a product delivered to every market with the same features.

Wireless charging through all models for starters. As for the rest it would depend on what is out for the tech behind the third. I do think it is already big enough, so lets hope they don't try to push the size up anymore.

Bluetooth headset S pen which charges when put back into the slot.
1080P display

Keep everything the same relative to other future devices.
Increase the screen to make it king of the hill.
-In cell
-Response time
-ppi
-etc...

I think the screen shouldnt get much bigger, maybe they could take out a bit from the size and top bezel, but I already accidentally hit onscreen buttons when trying to hit back or menu. That or maybe just go to virtual keys and keep the phone the same size but almost all screen. It's hard to say though.
1080 screen because why not? Also I would like the multitasking to go up, primarily maybe have a dock mode that pretty much turns the phone into a chrome book, so then something like the laptop dock would make more sense. That way I could bring around a really light laptop (as it would pretty much be a keyboard, screen, battery, and connector) that I could hook my phone up to and get a 1080 display that's 12+", and I also wouldn't have to worry about which files were located where (minus google drive, which I mostly use, so it's not a big deal really).
Umm, increased battery life, and increased internal memory. Pretty much, let me replace my work laptop, even if I still need a gaming laptop for some windows only games. Also maybe something that would let me run desktop linux software... but that again is up to google more than samsung really.

Every Note 3 released with the same hardware features.

5.75 to 6" screen.
The option to show signal strength in dbm on the notification bar, this is incredibly useful when using the phone as a wireless hot spot.

Cleary it will be slightly better than the S4 but I love it thus far . IF we make it passed 12/21/12 I wont upgrade unti the Note 4

1080 Res would be nice. Bigger battery. Remove the home and touch buttons and add buttons like the Nexus devices. Wireless charging out the box. Some extra buttons on the s pen to launch apps or quicker access to gestures. I would like to see Touchwiz taking advantage of the larger screen. Still running a 4 x 4 grid on a 5.5 screen makes no sense. Official desk and car docks that support cases and have wireless charging ability. More crafty and cleaver official accessories.
I would like to see dual micro sdcard slot. Our phones are becoming our laptops. Slap in two 64gb cards or by than, when the normal is 128gb. Having two 128gb cards would be outstanding.

Last year our phone would have not been possible or cost at least a grand. Next year our hopes won't be as expensive as they would be right now. What is your point?

Just pointing out that lots of people complained about this price, many more will complain with features being described and such. Then again this is a thread for what would you WANT to see on the next note and not what we WILL see on it.

That does remind me though. Something hardware related and something not. Hardware related, perhaps an eraser on the s-pen you get with the device. Secondly, more software support for creative/drawing-type apps, but that will come in time with more adoption of s-pen devices.

1080P is necessary - I can see the pixels when I remove my glasses. Also virtual function keys coz pushing home with the s-pen is interrupting. Can't think anymore, vanilla android or no bloatware is contradicting the company's business strategy so not realistic

Doesn't have micro SD slot.
Doesn't have a snapdragon 800.
Doesn't have 4GB of ram.
Doesn't have a 4K screen.
Doesn't come with a chicken... Every top stuff comes with plus a chicken.

Pros:
BEAUTIFUL screen. It is gorgeous and very bright. You can't really say that about many tablets. It almost reaches to the level of my old Transformer Prime at 600 nits (it's about 583 nits at brightest)
Fast. This quad core S600-esque processor is so much faster than anything I've had for mobile. It's one of the reasons I upgraded
Cheap. It's $230 or $270. I got the $270 32GB which is roomy enough for my needs.
Long battery. I haven't had it for long, but I can already tell it is going to last almost as long as my TFP.
Small and can be held in a single hand.
REALLY good wifi reception.
GPS that works very well even inside
It's stock Google and will be updated as soon as KitKat or future Android upgrades come out. Plan for 2+ years of upgrades and support.
Loud stereo speakers
Support for practically any 3G/LTE data connection you'd like in the US.
Unlocked bootloader. You can modify anything inside this tablet.
Grippy matte-plastic back.
Sexy look, IMO
Thin and light.
Bluetooth Smart and 4.0 support. This will increase in popularity with wearable Bluetooth devices.
Cons:
Small screen. I think I would be happier with an 8" screen, but it's something I can live with.
No microSD slot. This is something that I can live with, and if you want, you can get a microUSB to microSD adapter.
Non-removable battery. You won't worry about this unless you are truly a road warrior. It should last you till you want to upgrade or longer.
No micro HDMI port. This, again, can be something I live with. You can use MHL I believe if you need it.
No TouchWiz or other OEM skins. Nothing I lose sleep over, just something for those who find the skinned editions of Android better than regular stock.
No camera flash. Doesn't bother me, I don't plan on taking pictures much with this tablet.
A few launch issues, maybe. It seems to be not too big (there are many users who probably don't have problems than the people who complain about it here) and is being resolved fairly quickly.
No vibrator. My hands miss the vibrations of my TFP, but it's ok.
No longer has a secure element with NFC. This means no more Google Wallet or other NFC-banking apps. You can still beam contacts and such. Not a big deal.
No 802.11ac wifi support. This isn't a big thing yet and is still just starting to get into mainstream routers. With the life time of your tablet, you probably won't see many AC routers until 2 years from now, and you probably won't be missing much. People still use .11g standards to this day.
The speakers apparently emit a hiss at low volume due to some digital volume reduction instead of using an actual amplifier.

Drop tests show no survivals. Get a case or else, which might increase weight and size.
There is only T-Mobile offering Lte in USA. Verizon clueless on imei. Checking at&t Lte again tomorrow, but no tethering regardless.

And in some cases, even a custom ROM just holds the issue at bay for a while...

For me two things are the keyfeatures:
Price + size. I had an iPad, big tablets are not what I wanted.

I don't think there are any real cons to this tablet. Just personal preferences. Even the speaker hiss isn't noticeable unless you have ear pressed against the speaker. Overall its a very solid tablet.

I've had no problems such as the aforementioned dust or light bleeds. Rooted out of the box, put carbon on it, never had a random reboot either.

The only con so far is that I can't use my 8-bitty Bluetooth gamepad. The new Bluetooth stack doesn't support it.

Apart from the display resolution (that's what I've bought it for) and the CPU/GPU performance (I don't care - I'm not a gamer), my old Galaxy Tab 7.7 is much better.

Actually if your lucky like me I dropped mine today actually the screen kinda popped loose a little it cut off my heart stopped lol (literally) but I snapped the screen in turned right on I almost cried lol only thing it did was deleted some apps I had weird but no issues now and still looks new

[Q] Coming from a Xoom

I have an original Motorola Xoom and love it, but it is starting to get wonky (the charging plug is loose, it doesn't want to turn on sometimes, etc.). I use it primarily for web browsing and reading articles on Pulse. I tried a Samsung 7 Plus a couple years ago and hated it, graphics were awful and I couldn't make the transition from a 10 inch screen to 7 inch. I don't really play games on it, I may occasionally read on it (I have a Kindle Paperwhite). So, my question is whether the better resolution on the Nexus 7 will make up for the decreased size. It will be a LOT clearer than my Xoom but a smaller screen - how satisfying is web browsing on a 7 inch screen?

It was a difficult transition for me. Still doable though. You should go to Best Buy or Staples and give it a go though. You may hate it.

I went to Best Buy yesterday but the display was a demo, it only allowed you to do what the demo did. I couldn't use Chrome. I may try Staples, there is one on the way home. Thanks.

Hm, I never could get the hang of using a 10" tablet myself (1280x800 Chinese tablet with good performance from a RK3066). It was just too large for using it while on the go (I either used my phone or a real 11.6" laptop) and it was too small for usage at home (I have a comfortable desk with a 27" 1440p monitor). Using the 7" at home is great because it is always on and I use it while on the pooper or in the kitchen cooking. I also use it on the go more than my phone because it is LTE enabled with its own SIM card and fits in my inner jacket pocket nicely. Browsing the web (anandtech and some random articles) and using apps is terrific. But I always thought that browsing the web on a 10" tablet was kinda wasted. Most websites aren't optimized for the 10" landscape view and portrait was awkward. So I would always wish to use the browser on one side and something else on the other side the few times I really used it.

The resolution is so good that when I'm reading the BBC News website (news.bbc.co.uk) I don't even bother zooming in. Even the small test is readable at the default zoom level.

Thanks all! I bit the bullet and bought one this morning. I won't have a chance to play with it until I get home tonight. The Xoom charging plug is loose and disconnects half way through charging and I am tired of it. I did have a chance to try the browser at Staples and I found it easy to read. I got it at Best Buy and was told I have 15 days to bring it back if I decide I don't like it.

Make sure to report back your view on it as I'm sure it'll help others coming from a similar device.

My first thoughts, after a couple days of ownership - I like the portability, lighter and easier to hold. I have the WiFi version, so I really only use it around the house. By the same token, the larger Xoom wasn't a huge hassle since I wasn't lugging it around with me. It is easy to read web pages as I am browsing, I do miss the bigger view of the page with the 10 inch tablet, though. Lighter means I can hold it longer without fatigue. I would have to say that so far I like it but not love it. It is growing on me though. I still prefer reading on my Kindle Paperwhite over either of the tablets, too. I'll check back in a few days.

Remotely control camera?

Is there a device a can get to snap a picture remotely? I'm trying to use my phone to take a picture of my family for our Christmas card. My Note 3 camera is actually better than my old point and shoot, so I'd like to use it. I'm hoping there is some way I can press the button on my bluetooth headset to snap the picture instead of having to touch the phone screen.
I could connect a tv to the phone and mirror the screen so I can see what the picture will look like before snapping it, right?

Why not use the timer

Turn on voice command and you can say shoot, cheese, and like 2 other words and it'll take a pic for you. I tried it last night since I got this thing yesterday and it works great

The smartq zwatch had this feature along with many other cool features. It's only $99 and is a fully featured smart watch. You should really check it out in the Other Watches forum.
