YouTube slow as molasses - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

I have a Note 10.1 2014 that I purchased 2 weeks ago and is running 4.4.2 kit kat. This past week, I can't get YouTube to buffer more than 2-3 seconds at a time to watch. Insanely irritating.
This happens on and off on my Note 3 as well. What's going on? Anything I can do on either to improve stuff? Could it be a WiFi issue with the tablet?
Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk

FYI, just did a Speedtest for my WiFi and got 10 megs down...that's working fine.

Who's your ISP?

CenturyLink.
I uninstalled YouTube's updates and then reinstalled it, and that seemed to help. Maybe it's a cache thing. We'll see how it holds up these next couple days.

That's just certainly a co-incidence; the net code footprint of the app is still the same. You were likely just suffering from temporary network congestion and/or peering issues at your ISP; the app itself will make little difference, else this would be a much-more widespread problem (and affecting far more folks not on the known-to-be-YouTube-hostile ISPs like VZ and ComCast).

The only thing that makes me wonder more about the device itself is that I can try to watch a specific video on my Note(s) and it sits stalled buffering, so my wife calls it up on her iPad mini, and the video runs just fine.
Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk

I wonder if that's more of a "User-Agent" (or some such) issue. What happens if you bring it up on your (presumably Android) phone?

[Q] Is your Nexus 7 little bit slow?

Hi, I bought my device recently from local store. I do have some multitouch issues (even single touch) so I'll probably be swapping for new one, hoping for good luck. But before that I have another concern, overall opening apps, switching in between and going to homescreen feels quite.. slow. Especially default youtube app takes almost 2 sec to open.
Is this normal for all devices?
Sounds like you may have a faulty device. I've never noticed my Nexus 7 to be slow in comparison to my Note 8, iPad 3 and other devices. (the iPad 3 IS slow though!) However YouTube does open slower than any other app I tried. Seems like a full second before it opens.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yeah YouTube does take a second or two to open. But other apps are fine for me. If it's slow for other apps you have than that's not normal.

Yeah it's bit slow for other apps too, but what I care about the most is going to home screen and switching between apps, the lag there is pretty annoying and I didnt see it in reviews I checked. Considering the hardware I thought this stuff should be immediate.

If you upload a video of what you are experiencing we could compare speed to our devices. That way you can decide to return it or exchange it. You should not keep it if you find it annoying. The only question is whether you should exchange it for a correctly working tablet or return it because you need a different device altogether. (Though I've tried many tablets and haven't had one that feels faster to me.)

Mine was definitely a little sluggish too, my points of comparison were a Tab 3 8.0 and an HTC One phone. I was frustrated with the device between that and the multitouch bugs made it unusable in landscape mode. I ultimately rooted it, updated to the Q release, and put CleanROM on it and it's significantly faster and runs like I expected it to stock. Not everyone wants to root, but if you're up for it that should fix your issues I bet.

Aah should've done so, already returned it and got my money back. Leaving country for school, so I'll try to buy it there, I don't trust stores around here, this was actually already a second Nexus 7. If nothing else, multitouch issues were on both devices.

been away from Android a while, question note 2

Got the opportunity to swap my Iphone 5 for a galaxy Note 2, have owned a note 2 briefly before, but been using iphones for so long I thought id pop into PCworld and have a play on a note 2 again...alas it was terribly laggy, love the screen, a bit lower res than some of the new beasts out there, but still looks fine, quite fancy doing the trade, only the lag on the tester device was awful, could there have been something wrong with it, im not compare Ios with android, so lets not start that game, just would like to know if the device suffers like some of the older android devices
No man note 2 is ligtning fast its not old device lol.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Shouldn't be laggy at all. Do a factory reset and see if that helps. I am over 90% sure that t will.
the Note 2 is lightning fast in my experience IF the software is up-to-date (the original firmware was a bit laggy for me but that lag disappeared with 4.1.2.
Could also be a device on display with people playing around and no reboot in weeks of course....
Depends on when you experience lag. In general, there shouldn't be any. There is however a slight input lag, and some of the touchwiz apps aren't well optimised at all, ie s note.
Actions like opening the dialer, gallery or contacts might not be instant (about the only thing that was actually better with gingerbread...), these also depend on the size of your database, meaning amount of contacts and pictures for instance.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
No lag on mine either, just got it back from Samsung after a screen repair.
Of course, if you go back to your iphone and update to iOS 7 it'll feel a lot more android-y than ever before. My wife has an iPhone 5, I have a Note 2. I can't even read her screen it's so tiny but my phone is certainly not slow or laggy compared to hers.

well if u are stock get a factory reset, or wipe data ,cache and dalvik see if it solves .
Fear that if u have a original one and not 100% clone
Theres a small lag pressing home due to a wait period to see if you are double tapping to get svoice up. I think this can be disabled though.

Correct and yes it can.
There should be no lag on a note 2.

Did anyone actually bother to read the OP?
He tried a Note 2 in PC World - that's the store demo unit. Mauled by hundreds of people each day.
That it lags is not surprising, it's amazing that it runs at all.
OP - store demo units tend to get interfered with by all the potential customers who start all the programs and then walk off. You cannot judge a unit based on an in-store one.
Agreed and lije the op asked.
No this device is not like other older Android devices it doesn't suffer from lag.

[Q] Major lag with LectureNotes and battery issue

Hi everyone.
New to this forum so hope im posting in the right place.
I've just got the new note 10.1 2014 edition. I love the design and the screen, but I've got two major issues.
1. I use the excellent LectureNotes app pretty much every day. On my original note 10.1, it ran perfectly and really smoothly. On the new one it lags so badly it's unusable. For example, a pen stroke appears 2 seconds after I draw it. On the original note it was instantaneous. Zooming out to see a whole page takes about 5 seconds on the new note and stutters. On the old note, it was smooth and took about a second.
2. The battery drops so fast it's unbelievable. I've just watched it drop by 8% in 4 minutes when it was updating some apps from google play. It's dropped by over 20% in about 10-15 minutes.
I've done the updates, and then done a factory reset. These issues were there both before and after the factory reset.
Have I got a faulty tablet, or is this just what it's like?
Thanks a lot
looks like something is wrong wit the battery.... i have mine for almost 3 weeks (bought at Spain) and nothing in terms of malfunctioning HW
Your battery usage seems extreme did you check to see what's using your battery? I easily get a full day with heavy usage.

Thanks for the replies.
Screen 43%, android system 17%, android os 10% are the main ones.
It's now only gone down by 2% in the last few mins.
I noticed last night it dropped from 100% to 76% in about 20 mins, then after charging for 10 mins it went up to 93%. I know there's no way it can charge that quick so maybe there's some battery indicator calibration issue?
Any ideas on the lecturenotes problem?
thanks again
I have experienced no lag with LectureNotes on any Samsung build so far (currently on BMJ6). Maybe some thing(s) running in the background? Or some poor setting?
@jack880: I received a few reports concerning slow response of LectureNotes on the 2014 edition of the Note 10.1. But I also received several emails from users of the new Note 10.1 with suggestions and feature requests who did not mention slow response, so that I am quite puzzled. I am still waiting for my own device to arrive, so I can presently not test LectureNotes on the new Note 10.1 myself.
I own a Nexus 10 which has the same large display resolution and is supposed to be slower than the new Note 10.1, but on this device LectureNotes runs smoothly.
A common source of slow response is that `enforce GPU/hardware rendering´ is enabled in the device's developer settings. Please ensure that this option is not enabled on you device.

Hi. I emailed you about this earlier today. Just thought I'd post here too in case anyone else had a similar problem.
I really want to keep the tablet but without lecture notes it is useless to me!
GPU/hardware rendering is not enabled. I don't think anything in the developer settings is enabled.
If it helps you diagnose anything, when the pen first makes contact with the screen there is a delay before it registers. But if you keep the pen touching the screen, any movements you then make are instantaneous until you lift the pen off and then touch the screen again and you get a delay again.
Also the panning and zooming is really slow and jerky...
I'm still using my original note 10.1 at the moment.
Thanks for the help.
I use LectureNotes everyday to take notes for work on the new Note 10.1 2014. l haven't noticed any type of slowdown or lag. Maybe you have a rogue app or some kind of background process working?

Thanks, that's interesting to know.
No idea how to find what might be slowing it down. I've downloaded and installed the app twice, before and after a factory reset and it's the same.
Would you mind checking something for me? I've made a couple of videos comparing the original note (on the left) with the 2014 edition (on the right).
It won't let me post a link but please put h t t p : in front of this //we.tl/ElM2ctP0K6
How does yours compare with this?
As you can see from the 3rd video I'm also having trouble selecting the pen type on the 2014 edition. It doesn't seem to register the pen hitting the screen.
All other apps using the stylus (sketchbook pro, s-note, papyrus etc) are all fine on the 2014....
Many thanks

Thanks. I wonder what it is then? I'm trying the kies update to see if that makes any difference.....
It's downloading a huge file so I presume it's more thorough than the OTA update...
@wilsonhuang: LectureNotes is laggy for you on an old Note 10.1, did I understand that correctly? I do not yet have the new 2014 edition of the Note 10.1, but one of my test devices is an old Note 10.1, and LectureNotes is very fluid on this device, including zooming in, zooming out, writing while zoomed, etc. This can also be seen in jack880's videos. So far, all reports of LectureNotes being laggy on the old Note 10.1 were due to `enforce GPU/hardware rendering´ being enabled in the device's developer settings.

Mine is the same - just checked. The problem is definitely related just to zooming.
At zoom levels up to and including 100% there is no lag and selecting the pencils is instantaneous.
The problems ONLY occur at more than 100% zoom...
This could be why some people see a problem and some don't...
Also something else I've noticed - the delay when writing and selecting pencils only occurs with the s-pen. There is no delay when using my finger.
However, the lag in scrolling and zooming in and out happens regardless of where the s-pen is in relation to the tablet.

Tab pro 8.4 WiFi issues??

The two devices to which I can compare the wifi performance are a nexus 7 flo and an Lg G2. It seems that areas in my house where I normally get decent signal strength with the other two devices I am barely connected with the tab pro. Is anyone else getting poor wifi performance with this tablet? Maybe I just need to move my surfboard to the center of my house?

Yes very poor... I had the nexus 7 and a note 3 both perfect in my room. This drops and goes from 3 to 0.

I'm hoping that once some developers, hopefully, jump on this device wifi will be one of the issues resolved. Here's hoping it's not hardware related. It's really my only complaint about the device.

So i did some looking around on ye olde interwebs today. There is nothing mentioned anywhere yet concerning this(probably way too early) . I may call Bestbuy tomorrow and ask if they've had any calls/questions/returns related to this.

Yea not so much don't even have it in a case and I get like 2 bars where my phone is full bars

So I downloaded Wifi signal strength from the play store. Sitting in the same spot, the signal dbm and linkspeed are reading roughly the same as my G2. Data download speeds on the G2, though, are reading about twice what the tab is seeing. Can anyone explain this? G2 is reading around - 82 to - 86 dbm and tab around - 79 to - 82 dbm.

I just got the Tab Pro 8.4 yesterday and I too am getting very poor connection. I was going to return my Nexus 7 2013 today but I'm having second thoughts now. I love the screen real estate on the Tab Pro but unless I'm in the same room where the router is at I get horrible connection. Both devices running 4.4 but the Nexus 7 has no connection issues. Tried every possible fix to no avail . Other than that I have absolutely NO complaints about this tablet. From screen resolution to performance, this Tab Pro rocks!!!!!!
No WI-FI issues at all
Hello. Iv'e had my tab pro 8.4 2 weeks now absolutely no wi- fi issues at all great signal anywhere in house and outside too.
I have 2 netgear 6300 routers one is used for main network and the other is used as a bridge switch and I have a motorola cable modem which I own system combination works great. My netgear 6300 routers are a,b,g,n and ac if you know what that is.The Samsung Tab Pro .4 is also a,b,g,n and AC capable many other brand tablets are not AC capable I hope you know what AC is.
I suggest you buy some better routers and a seperate modem. Then you will probably have much better wi-fi reception. If you have a modem router combination build in one unit throw it away it will never give you the wi-fi reception you expect unless you are right next to it.

In my extensive history with Samsung devices, some will show more/less bars than others. But they will achieve the same or similar up/down speeds when tested. A while back I read a post (I think it was on the Sprint S4) by an electrical engineer who actually ran some tests on two devices side by side. IIRC, the result was the devices were receiving the same amount of signal, but one of them showed less bars.
So if you're not noticing lower speeds, it's likely that this device has a higher threshold for showing signal strength in bars.
I've discovered something interesting about the WiFI issues. I too had problems with the WiFi on my Tab Pro 8.4. Most of the time when I woke it up the WiFi would not work and I had to turn it off and on again. Over the weekend I purchased a new Airport Extreme to replace my older one and no I do not have this problem anymore. I am not connected via AC instead of A/B/G or N. I just thought it was interesting.
I have a Galaxy S4 and the Tab Pro 8.4 wifi signal in the same house locations is far weaker. I don't get any signal in house locations where my S4 is fine.

I have done some tests using 2 different acces points. (on 6 different locations with variable coverage) (each time 5 tests and took the average)
I compared my S3 with the tab pro and the resulst were very close. (3dBm at most)
I haven't really been paying attention to it before, but for as far as I know wifi is fine here.
BTW: Left bottom corner doesn't make any difference for me.
So a little update. I went and replaced mine and the new unit has the exact same issue.

I was going to go back to the NEXUS 7 because of the wifi issues but man this tablet is amazing!! So I decided to return it for another device and I guess I must have gotten a lemon for the first one(Which for me, Samsung has always been great), because I have no wifi issues at all . This tablet is by far the best one I've owned, from performance to especially screen resolution!!!
I had my Kindle fire hdx 8.9 and my LG Optimus g pro phone along with the tab pro 8.9 at the hospital and the tab pro could not connect due to signal strenth. Both my phone and the Kindle had no trouble what so ever and happily played Netflix and browsed the web. I am also having an issue where the tab pro disconnects from my wifi and reconnects every so often even in the middle of my using it for games or browsing. Intolerable behavior from a premium tablet.

I have a black 8.4, and I can second your -15 dbm when I hold the bottom left corner. I loaded wifi fixer and can watch the difference...One room away from my router and typically run -53 dbm, but when I hold the tab with my palm covering the bottom corner, I am around -68dbm. Hmmm.... other than that, and coming from the 7.7, I love this tab.

Buying new nexus 7.. Need help..

Friends I have decided to buy 32gb Wifi model. I have been reading reviews around the net and found that the tablet has touch screen issues due to some earthing problem.
My question is that is this true for the initial batches of the tablet only or for all? My Indian friends hopefully could shed some light on this. How many of you are facing the touch screen problem and to what extent?
I was all very excited to get this tablet guys. I was hoping to get it by next week but this touch screen issue is making me have second thoughts.
Also is this best android gaming tablet? Or is there something more powerful than this around the market?
Please feel free to give your suggestions. Waiting eagerly for your responses. Thanks in advance.

I got my Nexus in April, after quite a few had already been sold.
Out of the box, mine had touch screen issues... multiple responses to a single key touch as well as some unresponsiveness. After doing a Google search, a factory reset fixed most of the issues. I'm left with some occasional unresponsiveness.
For me it's an occasional annoyance. I've found after 30 plus years of playing with computer devices, they all have minor annoyances. Overall, I am quite impressed with the device.

That's what I wanted to hear. I just wanted to be sure that it isn't a deal breaker. [emoji1]
So what do you suggest? I should go ahead with the purchase of my device..?

Just got my 32gb nexus 7 days ago and I have not had a single issue with it. Works perfectly.

I of course meant Nexus 7, and not Nexus 5, but yeah this tablet hasn't missed a beat so far
I've had my 32GB N7 (2013) WiFi model since January (got a GREAT deal from Staples for only $170 brand new). This tablet has been no less than perfect for me. No issues whatsoever. Can't beat the bang to buck ratio you get with this device.

If I was in your place I would have atleast waited for Google I/O.
Who knows they may announce the new nexus 8.

But the Google I/0 is at the end of this month.. Also it will take at least another one month for Google to launch It here in India.. With the fact that initial batches invariably has some problems..
Also isn't this tablet capable of doing almost anything. I know faster and better processors are being released but is there any app or game in android which utilises so much power?
From what I have read the only drawback this tablet has is with the camera and feeble loudspeakers.
Performance wise it's pretty good.. Isn't it?

I've had a touchscreen issue and i demand for a replacement!
Bought nexus 7, should get it today [emoji1]
Any suggestions on whether I should root it and install custom rom?
Or the stock rom is good enough for all the heavy games I m gonna throw at it??

Got my 16GB version today and I'm nothing short of delighted, been brilliant and a world apart from the first gen Nexus 7's, no problems at all.
My nexus gets heated at the back in 10- 15 minutes of normal usage ..is it normal or is there something wrong ? Its not that it becomes unbearable or makes it difficult to hold the device but its just enough to make you notice .. If anyone could help ???

Depends what you're doing.. Mine never gets hot just browsing web/Facebook/etc
But when playing any game its hot after 10mins
As long as it's not rebooting it's fine.
