been away from Android a while, question note 2 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got the opportunity to swap my Iphone 5 for a galaxy Note 2, have owned a note 2 briefly before, but been using iphones for so long I thought id pop into PCworld and have a play on a note 2 again...alas it was terribly laggy, love the screen, a bit lower res than some of the new beasts out there, but still looks fine, quite fancy doing the trade, only the lag on the tester device was awful, could there have been something wrong with it, im not compare Ios with android, so lets not start that game, just would like to know if the device suffers like some of the older android devices

No man note 2 is ligtning fast its not old device lol.

Shouldn't be laggy at all. Do a factory reset and see if that helps. I am over 90% sure that t will.

the Note 2 is lightning fast in my experience IF the software is up-to-date (the original firmware was a bit laggy for me but that lag disappeared with 4.1.2.
Could also be a device on display with people playing around and no reboot in weeks of course....

Depends on when you experience lag. In general, there shouldn't be any. There is however a slight input lag, and some of the touchwiz apps aren't well optimised at all, ie s note.
Actions like opening the dialer, gallery or contacts might not be instant (about the only thing that was actually better with gingerbread...), these also depend on the size of your database, meaning amount of contacts and pictures for instance.

No lag on mine either, just got it back from Samsung after a screen repair.
Of course, if you go back to your iphone and update to iOS 7 it'll feel a lot more android-y than ever before. My wife has an iPhone 5, I have a Note 2. I can't even read her screen it's so tiny but my phone is certainly not slow or laggy compared to hers.

well if u are stock get a factory reset, or wipe data ,cache and dalvik see if it solves .
Fear that if u have a original one and not 100% clone

Theres a small lag pressing home due to a wait period to see if you are double tapping to get svoice up. I think this can be disabled though.

Correct and yes it can.
There should be no lag on a note 2.

Did anyone actually bother to read the OP?
He tried a Note 2 in PC World - that's the store demo unit. Mauled by hundreds of people each day.
That it lags is not surprising, it's amazing that it runs at all.
OP - store demo units tend to get interfered with by all the potential customers who start all the programs and then walk off. You cannot judge a unit based on an in-store one.

Agreed and lije the op asked.
No this device is not like other older Android devices it doesn't suffer from lag.

[Q] Galaxy note 2 advice

Hello there,
I just got a Galaxy note 2, previously had an iPhone 4s, I bought the international version, so I paid about $400 difference (I'm not in the US). I love the bigger screen, but comming from iOS to Androd really made me feel like I downgraded. This phone being quadcore and 2GB of ram is not as smooth as my previous iPhone 4s.
Browsing chrome feels sluggish, opening galery with about 1k pictures I can see the animation transition with a bit of lag. Waking up the phone takes sometimes as long as two seconds (I even tried every youtube trick to solve this, no luck). Applications such as steam scroll at max 30 fps and the list goes on.
I have never rooted a phone so I'm not even sure this exists, but I'm looking for a custom rom that helps me improve the fps while navigating through the phone (Or really any tips would help).
Thanks!

I'm not saying its an actually downgrade, It's just feels like my dual-core(?) 512 GM ram iPhone 4s was less laggy than this quadcore 2gb ram while navigating through gallery, settings, and apos such as whatsapp, facebook etc.
I'd love to fix this, is its possible. Please don't take it the wrong way.
Go to settings. Under development options. Set all animations to 0.5.
U can tick the force gpu rendering for a smoother experience also

It's how Android works, it gives possibility to True multitasking, unlike iOS. As i got to try iphone 5, it still felt a bit laggier than Note 2 and i would bore to death with iOS in matter of days or hours as you can't modify it anyhow.

I m using 4.1.2 India deodexd with root..

I had an Iphone 5, traded it away for note 2. So far this is what I've noticed.
1. Can't believe I ever had a POS apple product.
2. Battery life on iphone can suck on my....
3. If you take the time to root and undervolt and over clock, note 2 runs smoother than the iphone 5s (once it comes out).
4. I am on at&t i317 with international n7105 rom.

Galaxy s4 lag, give it a chance!

Come on guys, lets give samsung a chance. everytime a new phone comes out, its not going to come out perfect. All this people complaining and flaming about lag and blablablah!! I love phones, I give every phone a chance, once the manufacturer brings out updates, problems go away and so do trolls. Samsung did an outstanding job with this phone, nowehere does it look like the s3. Many people think it does, but when they see it up close, its a totally new model. Lets be patient and it will pay off.

the problem is, it IS the 4th generation of Galaxy series already. and no matter how buttery google make their android project, samsung always manage to ruin it (by giving it extra S-Lag feature). even until the latest update, the stuttering and lag are still there. maybe everytime the new Galaxy series ---no matter what android version it has---, we should expect that S-Lag feature will always be there
Sometimes lag is annoying . My gf galaxy s3 is way smoother.but I trust samsung and they will fixe it. Or devs

If you go into S-voice settings and turn off the double click home key to start S-voice, it will help with the lag.

Sometimes it's great and sometimes it just gets bogged down for some reason. I'm hoping this is something they can fix with some software optimizations, because I know the hardware is fine. I was trying to upload a picture to Facebook last night and the gallery app was lagging, had to suffer through a bunch of quips from friends in the vein of, "probably should have gotten an iPhone, hmm?"

Google is not any better, coming from a Nexus 4. There was lag out the box...
I usually only see lag in very specific places, with very specific causes:
Home button - this is caused by s-voice waiting for you to press it again. Disable the double-tap for s-voice and this goes away.
Camera shutter - not sure what's causing this; but early reviewers did not report on it. So there may be a software issue.
Gallery - no idea what's causing it to start slow. Though slow is relative and I wish my laptop's image viewer started as quickly...
Rotating the screen - if you have smart rotation on, the device takes about twice as long to rotate the screen, as it tries to identify your eye position. Turn it off and this goes away.
Using web-based apps like Facebook and Calorie Counter - it's internet lag, duh. The phone can't make facebook or your ISP faster
Unfortunately, there are some tradeoffs. Short of adding a dedicated svoice button (please don't do this Samsung) there's not a cure for the first - though I'd love to see smart rotation, gallery, and camera sped up. Although, to be fair, all but the camera are still pretty fast.
Outside of these situations it's impressively responsive, at least for me.
Coming from the n4,this phone is a sloth in comparison. Rooting and optimizing makes the phone perform a little better but there are still some hiccups here and there. I hope development kicks up and fixes the problems of hangups and lag.
Otherwise it's goodbye to all these new features and hello pure android (when it's released in june, that is)

I don't see any obvious lag
Few minor ones like other post described, but no lag in system
Plenty of RAM left, and I have a lot of apps running in background
Plus I've never seemed such fast GPS locks.

The lags are annoying - especially coming from s3 and Note 2.
Until Samsung gets them worked out, are there any of the development ROMs that leave the major features intact but eliminate the lags?

actually, it depends on the user... if you never use ios or htc one, you will never notice anything, as many people out there that saying S4 is lag free... you'll never miss something you've never had
For 640+ a phone better work great. I felt a lot of ppl on here over look that there problems. Screen getting reddish tint is not acceptable! Phone that powerful having lag isn't either. I'm glad I returned it hopefully in a few months this will be fixed.
I never notice any lag on the nexus 4 and its almost 400 less.
My Gs4 is very smooth Im so glad I didnt buy the htc one.

[Q] Is your Nexus 7 little bit slow?

Hi, I bought my device recently from local store. I do have some multitouch issues (even single touch) so I'll probably be swapping for new one, hoping for good luck. But before that I have another concern, overall opening apps, switching in between and going to homescreen feels quite.. slow. Especially default youtube app takes almost 2 sec to open.
Is this normal for all devices?
Sounds like you may have a faulty device. I've never noticed my Nexus 7 to be slow in comparison to my Note 8, iPad 3 and other devices. (the iPad 3 IS slow though!) However YouTube does open slower than any other app I tried. Seems like a full second before it opens.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yeah YouTube does take a second or two to open. But other apps are fine for me. If it's slow for other apps you have than that's not normal.

Yeah it's bit slow for other apps too, but what I care about the most is going to home screen and switching between apps, the lag there is pretty annoying and I didnt see it in reviews I checked. Considering the hardware I thought this stuff should be immediate.

If you upload a video of what you are experiencing we could compare speed to our devices. That way you can decide to return it or exchange it. You should not keep it if you find it annoying. The only question is whether you should exchange it for a correctly working tablet or return it because you need a different device altogether. (Though I've tried many tablets and haven't had one that feels faster to me.)
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Mine was definitely a little sluggish too, my points of comparison were a Tab 3 8.0 and an HTC One phone. I was frustrated with the device between that and the multitouch bugs made it unusable in landscape mode. I ultimately rooted it, updated to the Q release, and put CleanROM on it and it's significantly faster and runs like I expected it to stock. Not everyone wants to root, but if you're up for it that should fix your issues I bet.

Aah should've done so, already returned it and got my money back. Leaving country for school, so I'll try to buy it there, I don't trust stores around here, this was actually already a second Nexus 7. If nothing else, multitouch issues were on both devices.

[Q] Coming from a galaxy nexus

I have a galaxy nexus and I am looking to upgrade to note 2 mainly for the big screen and faster core.I would like to ask some questions from those who have upgraded to this phone from gnex which I have been wondering for some time:
- Is it an upgrade or not?
- How has been your experience so far with the gNote?
- Is the huge screen size a hassle or was it easy to adapt.Do you miss the GNex because this was way too big or not.
- How is touchwiz.I really really like the smoothness and look of stock android,so does touchwiz deliver,is it fast like stock?
- I already use my both hands to type in gnex, but I surf the net one handed in portrait mode.So can I one hand browse on note 2 as well?

Definitely an upgrade in every aspect. .....
Touchwiz is smooth....my ph never lags....yes....for a tiny bit here and there.....and thats normal with every ph...even s4 or OG pro.....
Note is awsm.....very practical ph but not made for single hand use...ive already dropped it once.....
Verdict: if possible get a note 3 .....or else buy note 2 with your eyes closed if single handed use does not bothers you
The note2 is amazingly fast and if you install Nova launcher, you get rid of the Touchwiz user experience, but all the extra "note goodies" remain. There are tons of ways to enhance your note2, just like any other Android phone *and* the Nexus series... If you have the money though, go for the Note3.

Well money is an issue so I cant get the note 3.I understand its an upgrade to note2 but i cant buy.
I intend to get it in the next week or so.
Gnex doesnt lag even for a little bit,but then again i dont use many apps on it.So I guess the Gnote will be the same
I just got my note 2 and its friggin awesome!!
I m still checking out all the features and loving the screen
There is just a small problem of extreme slow playstore downloads
Experience over time shown quite some variation in download speeds of the play store. I should not worry too much. Maybe your Wifi connection is a bit weak or the frequency band it's configured on is rather crowded there? You can try Wifi Manager to find out and that can help you with more Wifi related stuff too. ..

Welcome to the club mate. Make sure you use the S-pen to the fullest so you get the REAL NOTE EXPERIENCE:good:
And I'd also suggest Nova Launcher coz it has more options in terms of customization even though you'd lose Page Buddy.
Buy this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/White-PU-Le...d=100033&prg=1011&rk=1&rkt=4&sd=121001283707&
And you dont have to be worried for dropping it so easy... The back cover on the Note 2 (and all the others in this series) is so incredible slippery...
I had a galaxy nexus for two years and a couple months ago i upgraded to the Galaxy note 2 and let me tell you, It is SO MUCH BETTER in every possible way. Screen is better, touchwiz is snappy ( i was skeptical about the touchwiz), and the spen has changed the way I use my phone. Also has an sdcard slot which is a huge bonus. Battery life is night and day. I had to charge my nex twice a day every day, with this phone, I could make it go 48 hours if I reeeeeaaally wanted to, it's crazy. Def an upgrade! Do it.
Since most has been said. Im going to tell you something quick.
The biggest improvements that made me 'wow' are:
-app switching (almost always doesn't kill apps in the bg for faster multi-tasking)
-battery life is god-like. 6 hours of screen on time with 20 hours unplugged on hsdpa+ all day. And it also charges quickly.
- I switched to nova launcher and it's so much cleaner.

Crazy lack of performance

I went into the Apple store the other day to play with the new iPad mini and tested out a game called raven sword. I remember thinking the graphics were pretty good so I bought the same game for my new note 10.1 when I got home. Immediately I noticed the graphics were no where near as good. Do I restarted the tablet and made sure all other apps were closed. I remember a thread here about asphalt also not allowing high performance for some people on this tablet. Sure enough I tried that game too and the high performance aren't even options. Making sure it wasn't just android in general I installed ravensword on my note 2 phone which has been on for days and has a ton of other apps open including two browsers with a ton of tabs.. the game ran flawlessly and looked the same as it did on the iPad. What the hell is going on here.. someone please let me know what might be throttling my note 10.1 2014 so much. I really like it and nothing can match the pen input but this really isn't okay.

Hey thanks for the quick response.. I thought the same myself so I waited a couple weeks then I saw this post where someone shows theirs with the high graphics performance options. Now I'm thinking it must be something wrong with mine. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47889956

Yeah thats true. He owns the LTE variant with the snapdragon SoC (p605). I'm running the wifi only model (p600) and I am not able to choose high graphics in asphalt 8. I dont think there is something wrong with our devices. Developers didnt know how good the performance of the new exynos processor woud be... so they just prevented problems by making the graphics worse and the gameplay fluid

Ahh ok, I see what you're saying. So is it safe to assume the note 3 with the exynos is having the same issues? Crazy considering its been out for months. If this is the case I guess I feel better at least knowing it's not the actual device.

We don't have to blame Samsung but the App developers which still live (a) in a Apple world or (b) in the 80ies because they still didn't learn how to write Apps for Android in a proper way.
And because I also buy this game and write a mail to the developers, you maybe also should do it.
And in general this seems still to be normal that we have to wait until some Apps are "fixed" for this device. I have this also with my first Android tablet which was by most Apps recognized as a phone and later with the HTC One X where many games didn't work at the beginning. But I didn't expect that this "problem" still exists.
So, we have to wait and inform in-between the developers when a App didn't work correct.

That may be the better solution so devs can see that there are people who would like to use their apps/games but are not satisfied with the fact that it looks not good on a hig end device
