Hello
I have a Tab 10.1 Wifi that I rooted with Odin. I want to update to the newest FW, and I downloaded it on Sammobile. I know I have to use Odin to update it, but will I lose root?
If I do lose root, do I use the same method to re-root?
Also, now that I am rooted, what would happen it I tried to update the FW with Kies?
Thanks for the info

Some answers : yes, you will lose root when you use Odin. Yes, you can use the same method to re-root. I don't use Kies, so I don't know the answer there.

Using Kies was the only way I was able to update the firmware to the previous large update (the one prior to the Kids Mode update). I couldn't update using OTA, as I was getting the "Your device has changed. No updates available." message. So I read somewhere to try updating with Kies.
Once I updated using Kies, the update was successful, but I did lose root access as expected. I'm pretty sure I can root it again, as I haven't seen any posts to the contrary, but I haven't rooted it yet.
Thanks for the replies!
Does Towel Root, the 1 click root work?
Is there a way to save your root, update and re-apply root?
Thanks
I have. 10.1 wifi. Recently updated using Kies. Lost root, and was able to root again using the same root method I previously used. I tried towelroot, but could not get it to work.
NOTE: I and several others have reported random reboots since this upgrade (that added kid mode). I am on the US.

I really need help my phone is an SGH I747M and it's rooted. But I want to unroot it without installing the stock firmware. I already have jelly bean telus, and I don't want to do a recovery with Kies. And I can't do a backup because I only have 2 gb on my Ex sd card and internal sd card. Also what would happen if I just un installed the superuser app? Also could I update the phone with Kies even if the phone is rooted?

Hi Jacob, I was looking for instructions on an AT&T update to Jelly Bean [SGH I747] and wanted to do it without Kies to retain root and came across Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper which seems like it might do what you want. I just started looking here for instructions on how to do the update without using Kies as this was where I landed after my first search. I'd heard it can be done using Odin but I'm not well-versed enough (about .01 degrees above newb and still searching.
All I've done so far is just root this phone, my Atrix which I sold I unlocked the bootloader, but haven't done that yet on this phone and wasn't planning to. Can anyone steer me toward a thread for an upgrade to Jelly Bean (I I dloaded the official AT&T release and thought that I could use Rootkeeper to protect root as I've heard using Kies at all would at least remove the possiblility of getting it back for me but thought it might be possible the way I described. I was hoping I could find out if that was true and if anyone could help steer me toward the right thread for the update. Thanks --ct
do NOT attempt to unlock this phone's bootloader. only the verizon versions need that and attempting to do so on this phone WILL result in a hard brick.
if you would like to do an OTA update, voodoo ota rootkeeper would most likely be your solution.

Thanks cehf. That is good news as all I could find about Kies was discouraging but even thought it is call "ota" rootkeeper that it would work with it. And that if you didn't bother to wait for the results of the work being done to address the problems and just did the OTA update anyway that you'd lose root with no immediate chance of regaining it. So in this case I haven't really done anything except download the pieces. So I just need to use Voodoo first, then bring Kies up to speed, do the update and then unprotect root and delete the backup?:good:

That's an option, yes.
Your other option is to find your carrier's stock ROM here (pre-rooted) and flash it through Odin.
Remember to make a backup first.

I have used the Voodoo OTA on a Motorola Atrix to unroot before applying an update, then using it to re-root. Worked like a charm. Haven't had a chance to try it on my S3 yet.
i checked the SuperSU app, there is an option says FULL UNROOT, im not sure if it will work
other than that, the only unroot method i know is flash stock rom in odin
I have looked around and can't seem to get a straight answer about this. I have a stock rooted gn2, if i update over the air will it brick it? At the moment i have the att updater frozen with titanium backup. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, happy holiday!
where have you been searching? This has been covered dozens of times...
sorry
could you possibly provide a link sir?
generally speaking you can NOT take/install any OTA update when you are rooted...most OTA updates wont install if a custom recovery is detected.
99% of the time it wont work, .09% of the time it might install but you will have all sorts of issues, and .01% of the time it will work..
I think that pretty much covers it; you should probably just be patient and wait until the dev's incorporate it into a custom rom, and then you wont have to unroot to "enjoy" what ever the wonderful features are that ATT was so kind to include in their update..
And the install checks for stock system
You can install if you have stock rom. Root doesn't matter. My phone was rooted with stock room and twrp recovery. I just flashed stock recovery back. I had my superuser integrated in system partition. After Ota, i upgraded superuser apk. It then disabled Knox and download latest su binary.
So successful update with root preserved. Pm me of you need help

WARNING :
If you take the official OTA to 4.3 while root is present...you WILL trip the KNOX counter in your boot loader.
And if you root after an official 4.3 update you WILL trip KNOX anyway..
My .02....DO NOT UPDATE....
Stay rooted on the old bootloader and flash a custom 4.3 rom.....g
Wife is getting a new AT&T note 2 on the 24th (it already shipped). I would assume it doesn't have the OTA on it yet. Can you just reject the OTA when it arrives? Or will it try to install automatically on the new phone. Any way to prevent that until I can get my hands on it (have time tio mess with it).
Anyone try flashing a rom After ota update?
Did you thank your Developer today?

I too have a stock rooted 4.1.2. OTA fails as root present, got that. All I need is a stock 4.3 root. I have read several posts and still unclear as to what to do. I have either missed it or just not found the answer.
Do I need to unroot via SuperSU? then OTA? Odin flash a stock ROM?
Please don't bash as I am only seeking an answer. And any help is greatly appreciated!

I had stock rooted 4.1.2 with cwm as my recovery. I did the ota update. After the update, cwm wanted to fix root but couldn't. Essentially I lost root. Next, I re-rooted with CF-Auto-Root. I then installed SuperSU from play store which disabled Knox. Using GooManager I flashed TWRP. The last issue was wifi wasn't working. I used Odin to flash this file: http://d-h.st/OYC (unzip and use the tar in Odin). Wifi restored. Overall I like this update. It's faster and smoother.
Having said all this, I do not recommend anyone use this method. It's much cleaner to unroot then update. Or better yet, as suggested before, use one of the custom 4.3 roms.

I noticed the OTA did not work on my nine as I got the "unable to update" after the OTA downloaded. I initially rooted via the CF-Auto flash.
Just curious as to next step.

So you had no trouble flashing TWRP? I went back to 4.1.1 from Skynote, OTA'd 4.1.2 and was going to flash another ROM but my wife got my phone the next morning to play slots and she accepted the 4.3 official update before I woke up. I did root with CF Auto and disabled Knox, but was wondering if Goomanager would work.
The next question is can we flash some ROMS with the rooted OTA 4.3?
Geeve
Is there a pre-rooted stock 4.3 for the i317 AT&T available?

Goomanager worked fine. No problems with twrp either.
As far as flashing on from ota 4.3, I'm not brave enough yet.

Nope, pretty much as stock as you can get plus root. OTA failed but I assume reason being the root... but I'm a newbie on this stuff.

Then the next question I have is if you are using the stock recovery? I was using cwm on stock rooted 4.1.2. When I did the ota, the phone rebooted into cwm. Cwm asked if I wanted to do the update. I selected yes. When it completed, the Samsung installer gave a failed to install message, but cwm showed that it completed and wanted to fix root. It couldn't fix since I was unrooted at this point. I rebooted into 4.3 non-rooted. Re-rooted...etc.
I want to say again that I don't recommend anyone follow this procedure. I'm just trying to describe how I solved my own mess and hopefully answer any questions.
i recently rooted my note 2 and foolishly updated to 4.3 using kies and ive lost root access just asking if i follow the same method as i did 1st time round will it overwrite my 1st root. my phone works fine as it is but i want it rooted any ideas

Just flash a pre-rooted 4.3 stock rom and you will (obviously) gain root again.
And forget Kies for good.

i have a Galaxy Tab 3 SM T217S i rooted it with kingo root. i got an OTA update last night and my device is no longer rooted and kingo will not root it again.
i also tried odin boot/cwm root, it did not root it either.
im looking for some other ways to root my tablet that either wont be affected by future updates or can easily be re-rooted.
thanks

Use the same method u used to root it before OTA Update
And I am impressed you've been able to do an OTA Update while the device was ROOTED !

I have rooted my T805 tab and I am running stock firmware but when I try to update it on Lollipop it says that I am running modified system. I Know that there is triangle away app but I don't if it will work? What should I do and is my only option unrooting and factory reseting? I don't want to lose my data.

You have root so no longer eligible for updates. You can try unrooting by using the unroot option in the Supersu app or update via Odin.
How to update via Odin? Will I lose my data if I update via Odin? My tab says to try via Kies on PC?

Kies is another option, personally I prefer Odin. You won't lose your data with either methods.
Why prefer Odin when Kies is official and probably easier?

Easier? Lol I don't think so. For a start it takes ages and it can bomb out at any time.
At least there are fast mirrors out there for flashing files manually with Odin.
Are you sure that I won't lose any data if I flash Lollipop over rooted 4.4.2 with Odin?
I assure you, you're safe.
If you're that worried make a backup first with recovery.
Ok, thank you!
