i have a Galaxy Tab 3 SM T217S i rooted it with kingo root. i got an OTA update last night and my device is no longer rooted and kingo will not root it again.
i also tried odin boot/cwm root, it did not root it either.
im looking for some other ways to root my tablet that either wont be affected by future updates or can easily be re-rooted.
thanks

Use the same method u used to root it before OTA Update
And I am impressed you've been able to do an OTA Update while the device was ROOTED !

Just flash a pre-rooted 4.3 stock rom and you will (obviously) gain root again.
And forget Kies for good.

Hello
I have a Tab 10.1 Wifi that I rooted with Odin. I want to update to the newest FW, and I downloaded it on Sammobile. I know I have to use Odin to update it, but will I lose root?
If I do lose root, do I use the same method to re-root?
Also, now that I am rooted, what would happen it I tried to update the FW with Kies?
Thanks for the info
Jason

Some answers : yes, you will lose root when you use Odin. Yes, you can use the same method to re-root. I don't use Kies, so I don't know the answer there.

Using Kies was the only way I was able to update the firmware to the previous large update (the one prior to the Kids Mode update). I couldn't update using OTA, as I was getting the "Your device has changed. No updates available." message. So I read somewhere to try updating with Kies.
Once I updated using Kies, the update was successful, but I did lose root access as expected. I'm pretty sure I can root it again, as I haven't seen any posts to the contrary, but I haven't rooted it yet.
Thanks for the replies!
Does Towel Root, the 1 click root work?
Is there a way to save your root, update and re-apply root?
Thanks
I have. 10.1 wifi. Recently updated using Kies. Lost root, and was able to root again using the same root method I previously used. I tried towelroot, but could not get it to work.
NOTE: I and several others have reported random reboots since this upgrade (that added kid mode). I am on the US.

Hi All
Currently my tablet is on 4.4.2 and rooted using the wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit.
I was greeted with the system update notification a couple of weeks (or more can't really remember) ago but I'm unsure how I go about updating as I'm rooted.
Can I just run the OTA update?
If I can do so will I lose root? Can I then re root it using the wugfresh toolkit again?
If anyone can give me any really simple advice I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks
I did. Your root is lost after OTA, but just re-run the excellent Wugfresh tool to get root back. Really simple.
Beware though that if you have used xposed, it might might have messed with your /system folder maling OTA upgrade to fail.
Good luck and don't worry.

Thanks for your reply. I gave this a whirl yesterday, got the 4.4.3 update installed, then the 4.4.4 update installed. As you say I lost root but was still unlocked so reran Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit (the latest version) and voila, I'm rooted and on 4.4.4
Luckily I hadn't done anything too much, literally just rooted to be able to run AdAway and a couple of other bits, so it all worked nicely.
I've rooted with Towelroot, but I still have stock ROM. Will I be able to OTA to Lollipop? If not, is it enough to uninstall Towelroot, or do I have to flash a factory ROM?
Unrooting alone won't allow you to install OTAs because Towelroot changes partitions. You will need to flash a stock ROM.
Towelroot won't work with lollipop either.
Time to unlock the bootloader

Seems like you were wrong about Towelroot stopping OTA. Just got the 5.0.2 OTA and updated without any problems. Just had to click on update.

Did you lose root? Just curious. I flashed mine manually awhile back and have since moved on to CM12. Towelroot doesn't work on lollipop, I used Chainfires CF-Auto-root.
