Does our device have GLONASS ??? - Sony Xperia M

My question is on title itself.
Does we have GLONASS????
GSMARENA says so !!
In India GPS or GLONASS is better?
I had made a thorough search on internet.
There are many controversial opinions.
I want your opinions also...

Although it is not mentioned in the whitepapers (link C1904/C1905),
it is officially mentioned on this page: link.
Also, when using GPS Test (link), my xms sometimes does find Glonass satellites.
Those facts together, my guess is that xms does support Glonass (I have one from the Netherlands), although I would expect the signal to be much better than it is, using to satellite systems

Thanks for your replay & Links
My XMD locks location within 20-25 seconds in my area (Cold start), which is not bad, right?
Still my another question is unanswered!!

Why does it matter which one is better if it uses both at the same time. (I'm not sure how to check if this is actually happenning, but it should be and I assume it is because otherwise it's just a waste of hardware)

Just for the knowledge, Dude...
If GLONASS is better in India; how will " it's just a waste of hardware"
It will help others on taking their decisions.

Its not from your mobile. Its the location and satellite dude. If it detects Glonass satellite it will lock on to it, if it detects GPS satellite it will lock into it. And in India i haven't locked into any GLONASS satellite yet.

Artemis questions

Hi,
Primarily I apologize for my bad English.
I would buy a Artemis, there are reasons why I should not do this?
Some say it has a bad camera or GPS does not upgrade the position if you are walking.
I had an Alpine and was satisfied.
Thanks for your advice

Yes, that's true.
Bad (very bad) camera and GPS not designed for walkers.
Apart these issues, it's amazing.
(or, at least, this is my opinion)
True the camera is bad but the GPR is OK - I use it with Memory-Map on foot and on bicycle and the results are OK. How accurate do you need the GPS to be?
the GPS is supposedly accurate within 3 meters... how true this is i dont know

Agree.
The GPS is ok and has a good reception.
With "not designed for walkers" I meant it doesn't work in SIRF mode, which would allow to enable some features specifically designed for walkers.
Still, it's a good GPS receiver.

Making the Excalibur into a functioning GPS

Hey guys - just wondering if it's possible to make the Excalibur into a functioning turn by turn GPS?
Has anyone done this? Or is it possible?

I haven't heard of anybody doing this and I doubt it is possible. I believe it would require a hardware upgrade.

Yeah, you'll have to purchase a GPS receiver to make the phone into a "GPS device".
Thanks guys - and in doing that it's probably cheaper to just get a standalone device like a Magellan or something I assume?
Seems to doable...
I know that there are many portable bluetooth GPS modules that work with the Excalibur and 'lots of apps for maps routing too.
I´m just not sure about the "turn by turn" feature, but I guess it might be doable with the right GPS module/Software combo, you´ll just have to poke around... or wait 'till mid october, when I'll be back from Europe and will have mine working with a bluetooth GPS module too...
Anyways, I guess someone in the forum community might have it working...
Cheers.
Well, from what I´ve searched online, the bluetooth module prices start from about US$ 50, so it can be much cheaper than a whole GPS device, being only up to what you´ll settle for in terms of price and features...

I had the Garmin Mobile 10 Bluetooth GPS for my Excalibur. It came with a Bluetooth GPS receiver and tons of maps for download to the device/storage card. The software gives you turn-by-turn directions--which were great. The only problem I had, was the speed of the program. The maps loaded up VERY slow at times and it was due to my use of a 1GB memory card. The lowest amount of memory recommended by Garmin is 1GB, but my mem card was so saturated that the maps loaded very slowly. I'd recommend AT LEAST 2GB of storage before installing the maps for this program.
The home screen plug in isn't WM6.1 Compatible, but I have the app on a speed dial. 2d/3d turn-by-turn, easy pairing, the subscription isn't essential. The maps take about half of the supplied 2GB card, rest is free for whatever else. Lots of refined goodies.

There is a version of TomTom out there that along with FakeCursor does a pretty nice job. I have seen Sirf III BT GPS's for around $60 online too.
Of course the TT isn't legit so don't ask for links.
There was also a v5 of TomTom that would work on WM smartphone, but I think it had some trouble with the landscape screen. Usable, but not as pretty.

I have a 4gb card in there right now - and it's pretty empty.
Thans for the heads up on this - I will look for the Garmin Mobile 10 Bluetooth GPS
This has kinda been dealt with here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=281037
In short, I use the B-Speech GPS reciever with the MapQuest Navigator 5.0 and I have absolutly no problems with it. I drive a Tow truck so I need good directions. I had a GPS device (Mio) and even that did not compare to the MapQuest Navigator directions and accuracy.
Its worth looking into

Thanks man - I will look out for it when I go shopping.
A few questions for those that might know for a fact. These may be dumb questions, so I apologize.
1. Do i need to be on a dataplan to have the GPS work.
2. Will any GPS reciever work no matter what country I am in.
3. Is the text-to-speech activated through the software that is on the phone, or the GPS Reciever that I buy?
Thanks everyone!

1. If the maps are already on the phone (or, a card installed in the phone), no. Otherwise some plan is needed. Motonav and Live Search both work with the proxy plan, if you are on Tmo.
2. Pretty much, although the accuracy may vary in a few middle east countries from time to time, based on U.S. relations at the moment. At this point, it is pretty much accurate to about 20 feet anywhere in the world,. In America and Europe, it tends to be far more accurate than the map software!
3. The receiver just determines your current time, latitude, longitude, velocity and altitude, the rest of the work is done by the phone software.
Hey man thanks!
Is there an Reciever that you recommend that stands apart from the rest?
I will probably go and look for one today.

Hey guys, I just bought a Q starz bt 890. really small receiver (3mm wide!)I found it for 50 bucks. works great. check it out at http://www.qstarz.com/Products/GPS Products/BT-Q890-F.htm look around and you'll find it cheaper.
I use the B-Speech GPS receiver and Route 66 (PM me on route 66) works perfectly. Of course you can also use Google Maps (but no turn by turn).
Yes its a lot cheaper to buy a GPS receiver then to buy a stand alone Nav unit, the B-Speech cost me about 50.00 on ebay

paybyphone.com NFC

San Francisco started supporting paybyphone.com for paying for the parking meters. The meters supposedly have an NFC sticker on them for easily pulling up the meter location in the android app.. but I can't get it to work. I'm tapping the NFC sticker on the meters with the back of my phone, but nothing happens..
More details here - they list Galaxy Nexus as one of the supported phones for NFC -
http://paybyphone.com/san-fran-nfc/
Anyone in the area that's tried this? Not sure why it's not working.. Google wallet works fine for me so I know my NFC works..

Yes i tried this here in SF and no luck. it seems the meters are not equipped with the NFC chip yet. but i saved my self at least $400 worth of tickets with this app. hehe
edit: I guess by looking at the Paybyphone.com site it seems that it has NFC chip/ Tag. i know for the fact that all the meters i've tried to NFC don't work.

I presume it's a problem on the application side. Looking at the permissions, the NFC permission is not present.

[Q] GPS on Galaxy Note 10.1 2014

Hi all,
I'm about to take the plunge and get one of these (assuming I can find one in the UK), but I just want to confirm if it has a proper GPS chip in it, or does it rely on data connection to track your location i.e. AGPS
My uncertainty is from looking at the specs on the Samsung Global site, where it says GPS/GLONASS, but the Samsung UK site says SGPS/ GLONASS. I've no idea what SGPS is (nor has Google) so I'm not sure if this a typo for GPS or AGPS.
I've scanned this forum as much as possible, but can't find any thing to confirm one way or the other, and none of the reviews I've read state it.
Many thanks for any info.

Yes, the gps works fine ... there's 2 electrical retailers here in the Uk that should have stock (Currys & John Lewis). Have a look on their web sites.

Many thanks for that Paul. Looks like a trip to JL at the weekend.
Also, sorry to the masses, just realised I should have posted this in the Q&A and Help forum
