[Q] Someone Please Stop me before I hurt myPhone!!! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello. Hopefully, my title was just interesting enough to draw the eye of someone who know much more than I about his custom ROM stuff. Please understand that I am sure that this issue and probably exact question has been asked countless times by the same dummy, like myself, with just enough knowledge to be dangerous. SO...forgive me...I've spent countless hours reading and trying to find an answer on my own but everyone seems to have a slightly different problem, or, have utilized different methods of creating their issue.I'll be brief and ask for someone to please spare a little time to help me resolve this. THank you
Bottom line is that I tried to flash 4.4.2 to my NoteII(sgh-t889). I booted into recovery and did something stupid. I think I loaded the .zip files from the SD card instead of through my PC. Anywho, the phone is now bootlooped with the Cyanogen logo and I can only access ODIN to try and flash a new and proper firmware version. I wiped dalvik and did a factory reset before flashing the new ROM bu I don't think that is relevant because I am quite sure that I didn't install properly.

I have looked EVERYWHERE for a downloadable .TAR file to flash with the stock firmware(4.1.2) ...even here(hotfile.com has apparently shut down and all links are a bust) and I am not even sure if that will fix the problem
If anyone is willing to take the time to guide me through the steps to reinstall the stock firmware, point me to alid links for necessary files, and get this thing up and running again, i'll promise to give up on mod'ing my device and just enjoy the hotspot use that I got from rooting the phone in the first place.
BTW...I made a backup using clockwork but I cannot access it.
THanks Again for reading and the anticipated responses. I am sure this is a breeze for most of you but for those of us trying for the first time and learning by internet, this can be a little confusing due to so many differing methods/software. Thanks again.

you can get stock firmwares for ALL samsung devices at sammobile. Search google to access the site. The directions on the webpage to download is pretty straightforward. After you have the appropriate file on your computer, go into odin( give administrator permision) and select the PDA( says CP in some versions) button and select the file you just downloaded. Now with your phone, go into download mode( power home voldown) and when you see an big android and a screen that says downloading , connect your phone to your computer running odin and click start. Wait about 5to10 mins and you will have a resetted phone with stock firmware. If youre stuck in a bootloop just do this again until it works.

Hello. Thank you so much for responding ad so quickly. I can't tell you how much it is appreciated. I probably dont have to explain how lost I feel without my phone.
I tried all instructions provided but I believe that I must have missing something. The file downloaded is a .zip file and I cannot flash a .zip file through ODIN...or can I???? I did not see any .TAR files or others that can be flashed. If there is a simple solution, please respond with what I am doing wrong or where a >tar file can be located that can be flashed through odin to reinstall the stock firmware. I am willing to try any method that will solve the problem. THank you all again for reading and the assistance.

Why not try to get a rom that is 4.3? Maybe you have firmware for 4.3. Otherwise the only thing I could think is that your firmware and rom version isn't matching. I've had it boot loop before and it was usually because mismatch in firmware and rom

ok. I think you downloaded the wrong file. here are the elaborated assistance you might need.
1. go into this link : http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/
2. register or log in to the sammobile website.
3. you should have a black box that says <select your firmware> with a bunch of words in it. on the top right of that box, you'll see a box that says <Search device here...> enter you device name(SGH-T889) in that box and you will see your device firmware there. download the software version(android version) you want and press download. you'll have a zip file. you need to extract the zip file, and there'll be an odin flashable file.
*note: download is probably reeeeaaallly slow, so go have a cup of coffee. good luck!
after you've got the file on your computer, follow these instructions:
1. Extract (unzip) the firmware file
2.Open Odin
3.Reboot phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
4.Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
5.Add the firmware file to AP / PDA
6.Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
7.Click the start button, sit back and wait a few minutes

Okay. I'm gonna go ahead and help you out, but you should be made aware of the fact that this is the international (GT-N7100/GT-N7105) Galaxy Note II forum. This thread should have been started in the AT&T/Rogers/Bell/Telus (SGH-I317/SGH-I317M) Galaxy Note II forum. Anyway, you need to obtain the following. Based on your opening post, I'm going to assume that you have already installed Samsung Kies on your PC. If you have, that eliminates the need to manually install the Samsung mobile device USB drivers. So, if you have Kies, proceed to the download links below and start downloading. If not, let me know and I'll get you the drivers you need.
Prerequisite software and or files to download:
Samsung ODIN 1.85: http://db.tt/ltzRsRZz
Stock/Factory SGH-I317/SGH-I317M Firmware for Rogers: http://www.hotfile.com/dl/180165074/47da708/I317MVLALJ2_I317MOYAALJ2_RWC.zip.html
Okay. Now that you've downloaded the prerequisite software/files, go ahead and unzip each of them. ONLY EXTRACT THEM ONCE! DO NOT UNZIP EACH FILE AND THEN TRY TO EXTRACT IT AGAIN! When you extract Odin3-v1.85.zip, you should be left with a file named Odin3 v1.85.exe. When you extract the firmware file, you should be left with a file that has a *.tar or a *.tar.md5 extension. If this is what you've got, proceed to the flashing instructions below.
Disclaimer and crap. Sorry. I gotta post it.
I CLAIM NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE(S) THAT MAY ARISE FROM THE FOLLOWING OF THIS GUIDE. BY PROCEEDING BEYOND THIS POINT AND FOLLOWING THE GUIDE, YOU CLAIM SOLE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS AS A RESULT, EITHER DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, OF FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE. NEITHER I, OR XDA, WILL BE HELD LIABLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENCES, POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE, THAT ARE A RESULT OF FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE. FURTHERMORE, REGARDLESS OF ANY PERCEIVED IMPLIED GUARANTEE, THERE IS NONE. EVERYTHING IN THIS POST IS TO BE TAKEN AS IS. THE POSTER CLAIMS ONLY THAT THIS GUIDE HAS BEEN USED BY HIMSELF PERSONALLY IN THE PAST, AND MAKES NO GUARANTEE THAT IT WILL WORK FOR OTHERS.
1.) Put your device in download mode. This is done by taking a powered off handset, and pressing power, home, and volume down, until you see a screen asking you to press volume up to continue. At this point, go ahead and press volume up to continue.
2.) On your PC, double-click Odin3 v1.85.exe to launch it.
3.) Once ODIN is running on your PC, connect your Note II to the PC using its USB cable.
4.) Once ODIN is running and your device is connected in download mode, go ahead and click on "PDA" in ODIN, and select the firmware file you extracted; the one with the *.tar or *.tar.md5 extension.
5.) Once you've selected the firmware file for PDA in ODIN, it's time to flash your device. Do this by clicking "start" in ODIN. Before clicking "start", make absolutely sure that the reformat option is NOT checked. I can't remember exactly what the option says, but it's right by the auto-reboot option. No matter what, do not check the format or reformat option... or whatever it's called. Anyway, as long as that option isn't checked, go ahead and click start.
6.) After clicking start, ODIN will begin flashing your device back to stock. This will take a while. Until ODIN is completely finished flashing your device, DO NOT TOUCH, UNPLUG, REBOOT, OR EVEN SNEEZE ON EITHER YOUR PHONE OR YOUR PC!!! Let ODIN finish!
7.) After ODIN is finished, your phone should reboot. If it gets to the Samsung screen and stays there for a while, let it. Don't try to reboot the phone or anything until you've given the phone at least seven minutes to try and boot.
8.) After all of this, the phone "should" now be booted and running properly.
If you have any questions or concerns about the guide I've just posted, please don't hesitate to reply. I'll be checking this thread periodically, and maybe other XDA members can help out a little too. I wish you the best of luck, and hope this guide works. Take care and have a good one!!!
Thank you,

[Q] boot loop after using mobile odin...please tell me not hard brick

Hey everyone, first time posting, but followed this forum for a while now.
Ok, so I had been running CM10 on my ICS S3 for a while, but wanted to start fresh and upgrade to JB, and see how I liked it. I followed this link:
androidrootz.c o m/2012/10/how-to-unroot-samsung-galaxy-s3-no.html
to flash my stock ROM back to the phone. (Hope linking is permitted, if not I apologize). I am on Mac and therefore used Mobile Odin Pro to help me achieve a fresh S3. I started at step 4, bc I didn't care to reset my flash counter. Everything was going smoothly until I hit step 15. It's here that the phone will flash the Samsung boot screen momentarily, then show the "blue droid" running script for less than a second, and repeat over and over again.
I've attempted to put it in recovery/download(is there a difference between the two) mode, but the phone repeatedly does what was just described. What options do I have to get this phone back in working order?
Please help me, King Newb, if there is actually any help that can be given. I really don't like using my old iPhone as my primary again. I just want my S3 back, preferably running JB and rooted. Please and thanks guys.
Out.

Actually, you can't post links cause you're a new user.
Here's what you should follow: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822308
To get in download mode: Hold Vol down+Home + Power button
To get in recovery mode: Hold Vol up+Home + Power button
Instead of getting CWM, I would suggest getting TWRP, which can be done by downloading goomanager from the play store. (After you're done flashing stock rooted JB from the link above).
I am on Mac, is there an alternative to Odin, or a version that runs on OS X?
Thank you for putting me on the right track

Mobile Odin or Heimdall.
OK, I need a little more clarification. My phone doesn't boot, so are you saying that I can use Mobile Odin right on my Mac, and is it possible to link me to a proper copy of Heimdall? Also, is there perhaps a step by step instruction set for getting me back to a functioning phone? I clicked your link and found a ton of information, but still unsure which set of steps I need to follow.
Thanks again for your patience.

Oh my bad, I replied fast (covering a lot of threads right now). Mobile Odin won't work.. And I haven't seen Heimdall around here. Sorry.
The easiest way would be to use a PC. I'll keep looking for what can be done on Macs (you should do the same )
I followed the steps to the link (used virtual machine) but when I get to the step where you press start, Odin just says "all threads completed. (succeeded 0/failed 0). So I think I'm getting close but not quite there yet.
Would it have something to do with the boot loader option? Just curious because of the boot loop I've been stuck in. Btw, I can't get my phone into recovery mode, however download mode still works fine, if that matters.
Another quick update. I've now been able to get into the phone by holding both volume buttons and the power button. Phone boots normally with cm boot logo. However the phone is completely wiped except for stock apps it comes with. This gives me a little more hope but still not sure where to go from here.
Bump. Can't anyone point me in the right direction? My situation is quite unique, as I have found another person explain it happening to them during my search. Want to get this fixed ASAP.
Thanks!

Download this if you are us using AT&T and if not use the drop down menu on the top left and pick your device and download the latest jellybean update:
http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-I747
Flash this download via mobile Odin. Read mobile Odin's directions carefully. You can so keep root of you wanted to through this app. This download will bring you back yo complete stock and will work for you.

I'm having the exact same problem. Is there a solution I need one so bad
I have the same problem as the OP.
I CAN NOT get it into recovery mode.
I CAN get it into download mode.
Is my only option to use ODIN on a windows PC? Does anyone have any clue of what software to download and from where?
Oli
Yeah, I would try that. I'm not to familiar with mobile Odin. I do know that after running certain roms, if you Odin to stock you need to do a factory reset from recovery after the Odin flash.
You're not going to be able to flash stock via odin if you can't get into download mode.
What OS did you come from? What did you do just before this all happened?
Try recovery mode again (vol up + home + power). Release only the power button when the phone vibrates and you see the blue script in the top left corner. Report back
He can get dl mode, not recovery

Maybe you don't have cwm installed anymore since you wiped your phone. Try downloading rom manager and flashing cwm recovery then see if you can get into recovery mode.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747
Phone won't boot, can't use Rom manager to flash cwm. I stand by what I said. Flash to rooted stock, use goo manager (or Rom manager) to install custom recovery. Dl and flash Rom.
Mobile Odin works much like the desktop version. The Odin package usually has a recovery so CWM or TWRP will be replaced by stock recovery. Although mobile Odin does have the ability to exclude recovery from the flash. So you will have to get back into down load mode use the desktop version of Odin to stock then flash cfroot with Odin. Now you should be able to get into recovery as cfroot has CWM

Ok, I also need to know if it is the 16gb model or the 32gb.
And what exactly happened? What were you doing when it stopped working? You say it only boots to download mode now? And if you remove the battery, then replace it and press the power button, it automatically goes into download mode? Is this correct?
Were you rooted and did you have a cusom rom installed? CWM or TWRP recovery?
Sorry for all the questions, but I just want to make sure it cant be solved without a pit file. I have it for the 16gb version, but never had to use it yet. If I can avoid it, I will.

Actually i tried to install custom rom that time it happend. Now if i tried to install official firmware with odin it's says the attached image error.

Ok, and when you click PDA and select the firmware to flash, it should go through a md5 check. Does it pass this? It should display in the lower left pane of Odin.
Try this just to be sure. Pull the battery, then replace it again. Now try to boot into recovery. Hold Volume Up + Home + Power. When you see the blue text flash at the top of the screen release the buttons.
I know you probably know all this already, but just in case.....
Last question, which rom was it you were trying to flash?
Ill go ahead and get the pit file uploaded for you and let you know what to do once its done.

Ok, sorry it took longer than I expected to get back to you.
Here is the pit file you need.
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23032113221600444
I suggest verifying the md5 on the download page matches the md5 of the actual file you download. This will verify it is or is not corrupted.
This is how to use it (as far as I know). I suggest using Odin 3.07
Open Odin and check Re-Partition, dont uncheck Auto Reboot or F-reset time
Click the PIT button under the RePartition heading, then browse to the pit file you just downloaded and select it.
Click the PDA button and choose the firmware you want to flash.
Click Start.
Please keep a few things in mind. This is considered a potentially dangerous operation. It can Hard Brick your phone just as easily as it can restore it to working condition.
I have never actually done this myself, and information on the process is quite lacking imo.
I have no problem if you want to wait and see if someone can verify that I am giving you the correct directions!!! I would actually recommend it!
And it goes without saying, but you are doing this at your own risk!
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask.
---------- Post added at 04:19 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:12 AM ----------
If you want to wait for someone to confirm, try to give it until at least mid-afternoon. Mid-evening is best if you can. There are some extremely smart folks here, but the forum can be very slow lately. There are a few others who do log on everyday to help people out, and if they know about this particular operation, I am confident they will reply. Especially if I got something wrong!
You would probably hear something earlier, but I cant promise because this is something rarely dealt with. Just dont want you to be up for hours hitting refresh!
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
Please dont forget to post your results, good or bad or nothing. It can help a lot in case it comes up again in the future.
Did you try this? Or decide to wait and get confirmation?
Anyone know for sure if the steps I gave are correct?

Ok, first download the firmware from my file host. Sammobile and Samsung-Updates, while great to have, only use hotfile which is extraordinarily slow and imo, prone to download corruption.
UVDMD5 Official Firmware - http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=22946563261204064
Also download this stock, Odin flashable kernel and recovery I just put together for you.
UVDMD5 Stock Kernel - http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23032113221600621

Also, check the md5sum of every file you download. If you do not know how go download this free program -> Hashtab
Install it and then you can right-click and choose properties on any file, and you will see a tab called File Hashes. In this tab it will tell you what the md5 of that file is. Copy the md5 shown on the originating download page, then paste it in the box in the File Hashes tab. It will automatically compare the two. If they match you are good to go. If not the file was corrupted during download and needs to be re-downloaded.
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Ok, now, first a couple of questions. When you open Odin, with the phone plugged in, does it say COM# in the upper left box?
Did you use Odin version 3.07 as I suggested?
In your screenshot in the OP you were using 3.04. If not, download version 3.07 from the link in my sig and try again with my previous instructions. If it fails this time, copy/paste the Odin output and post it here.
+++++++++++++++++++++++
If you have done everything so far and still are in the same position, here is the next thing to try.
If at anytime a procedure fails, copy the output and paste it in a post here for me.
Open Odin 3.07
UNCHECK Auto-Reboot and F-Reset Time
CHECK Re-Partition
Click the PIT button under the Re-Partition heading and browse to and select the .pit file you downloaded earlier.
Make absolutely sure that Auto Reboot and F Reset Time are NOT checked!!!!
Click Start
Once complete (verify output says Succeed 1/Fail 0) Flash the stock firmware......
DO NOT REBOOT, DISCONNECT, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE TO THE PHONE.
Still in Odin 3.07
UNCHECK Re-Partition
CHECK Auto-Reboot and F-Reset Time
Click the PDA button and browse to and select the UVDMD5 firmware you downloaded.
Double check that Re-Partition is NOT checked!!!
Click Start
Hopefully this will prove to be the solution! Report back at this point please.
I have a few things I have to take care of, so hopefully you will be done when I get back. But if not I will post the next things to try with the recovery and kernel anyway, just in case it does continue to fail.
Good Luck!
OK, In case the last things I gave you to try, you can try this.
If flashing the PIT file succeeded by itself, you shouldnt have to flash that again. I will write these instructions assuming that part worked. But flashing the stock firmware did not.
Download this custom Recovery (TWRP 2.5.0.0)
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=22964708692722240
While in Odin 3.07
Make sure ONLY F-Reset Time is checked
Click the PDA button and browse to and select the Stock MD5 Kernel you downloaded.
Click Start
If it succeeds try flashing the Stock Firmware by itself, following the instructions from before.
If it still fails, Go ahead and download a stock rom such as this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2276645
(any stock based rom would do)
Now flash the TWRP Recovery you downloaded.
Make sure F-Reset Time and Auto-Reboot are checked.
Click the PDA button and browse to and select the TWRP Recovery you downloaded.
Click Start
If this succeeds, it will automatically reboot. It may go to download mode, recovery or hang at boot. If it does anything but boot to recovery, press and hold the power button until it shuts off. Then immediately repress and hold Power + Volume UP + and Home. When you see the blue text flash at the top release the buttons and it should boot to recovery. Now from here, try to flash the Stock Based ROM you downloaded. Once done, Reboot.:fingers-crossed:
After all of this, I am out of ideas. If you are still unable to get your phone to work, you may need to contact someone about a potential jtag repair. If I think of anything else you can try, I will of course let you know.
I am still hoping someone else will jump in to at least let us know if I directed you correctly!!! Hint Hint everyone!!!

Ohk, so first off all, go to www.sammobile.com and search for firmware tab there, click on it, then type in your device's model number in the search box on middle of the page and select firmware of your country and download it (note: you would need to sign up there to download, it's free to sign up there) and extract it to some location (say c:/tab/)
Now when you have downloaded the firmware (now I will refer it as FW), search and download Odin flash tool(version 3.1,or any other will work too) in there just click on ap button and select the md5 file extracted from the zip you downloaded,
It will take a few seconds to verify the md5 and after it is done verifying, you are ready to flash!
You will need to go to download mode, if u dint know how to enter download mode then here's how to, press and hold volume down+home+power keys for some time (if the device is on then you will need holds them fit about 10 seconds, it will reboot to download mode) it will come up with a screen saying "WARNING! FLASHING CUSTOM ROM CAN HAM DEVICE and blah blah" , just press volume up to continue
As I just read, you are already in download mode (Odin mode and download mode are one and the same thing) you can skip the above step, you can not get out of it without pulling battery, and as we can't pull battery of tab, you will need to flash anything to get out of it (remember, flagging wrong thing might brick your device)
And keep in mind that as the process will take about 15 minutes, so you should have enough battery to run it for about 1 hour, I prefer having at least 40%battery
When you enter download mode, connect you device to computer using USB cable and Ogden should say added in the box present in it, and there are some boxes on the upper side of Odin, 2 lines of boxes , one have big boxes aligned and other have rectangular boxes aligned below the bigger ones, the first rectangular box should turn "light blue" in color and it confirms that your device is connected!
Now see if re-partition is not checked, if it is checked and you start the process then you will brick your device instantly! If, but any ways, it is checked, then uncheck it and click start, it will take some time to finish the process, may be around 10-15 minutes, and after that you will be booted to android os! You can now use your device as it was before all the mess you created!
Go ahead and try this, it should work and bring your device back to life and just saying that, if by any means or any problem occurred and your device is not working anymore, don't point the figure at me, because I can only tell what to do, it's your choice to opt it or not
But there's only 0.001% chance that anything may go wrong, unless you unplug the cable in between the process of flashing
If the process don't help in once, just redo the process of flashing again and if it again don't work, just factory reset it and it should not to android
First boot will take some time, about 2-3 minutes, so don't panic, just keep calm
Hit thanks of I helped

In My opinion, yes or no, if you found anything that says it can retrieve things after format then you can always go ahead and try it out, the worst can happen is you get in a bootloop or someway you won't be able to boot to android, and as now you have what it takes to recover from that(my above post) , you are ready to take the risk!
I dint think there's an app (yet) that can recover data after format on Android, there's a software for Windows that can recover data after deleting them, but not after format
As formatting android don't actually format the drive, I think we can retrieve data, but I had not found any app for that yet
Just to tell you, the difference between permanent delete and format is that, permanent delete deletes the data but can not delete the signature of the files, and a file can be recovered by just it's signature, and formatting deletes all the signatures from the drive,
Some times, files can be recovered also after format, that can happen if you don't format all the drives, the files do create there signatures in other drives too!
So, good luck for finding a solution for recovering files after factory formatting, and I would like to request you that if you find a working solution then please share, it might help anyone!

[Q] And I mannage to soft brick....

Hey guys me again, I have been trying since 2 hours to unbrick my 2 days old Galaxy tab s 10.5, After successfully rooting my new tablet I decided to make a back up of my stock system, I used TWRP recovery to do so, after booting successfully on TWRP, I wanted to make sure I will have a clean image, I manually erased every possible thing on my table by selecting every option on TWRP, once done and on my way to reboot, before quitting TWRP warn me that there wasnt any system, and even with this warning I quit. Result I bricked my tablet hopefully "soft", to get even better I remembered that I didnt had a micro sd card on my tablet and by consequence I must have erase TWRP and every possible restore solution, the table get stuck with the Boot logo and thats it... I can get at least into download mode,. I tried Kies 3 but Im getting an error that my device is not recognized and for Odin I do think is connected but I dont know how to use or what to install or what to do. And I don't get it why my program seems so buggy and I can´t select any of those options.
at least I could root my phone easily.
ps: I did try every possible combination to get into recovery mode and is just impossible there is no way.
if anybody rescue me I seriously cant thank you enough I googled around and did search a lot on the XDA forums, I'm now more scared to tweak around and make things worst , and maybe if not to late permanently dammage it.

Than to find myself stuck on the samsung logo and being totally blocked since than, I discovered with regret that I actually DIDNT had a Micro SD card and I did wipe out everything including the Restore program if Im getting it right.... I dont know if its already to late and I can go cry on a corner for waisting 500$ in 2 days or is there anything I could do ???, I can get at least into download mode,. Hey maxal, thx for replying, my English is really not the best, if you think its not understandable I will re edit and try again.
You will need to find and download your firmware from Sammobile http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-T800/BTU/
and use odin to reflash your stock firmware.
Read this too. http://theunlockr.com/2014/08/09/how-to-unroot-the-samsung-galaxy-tab-s-10-5-wifi/
TURNING THE DARNED THING OFF:
Here's the problem. If you are at the Samsung splash screen or boot looping Recovery, you cannot turn your tablet off by just pressing the power button and you can't pull the battery. This prevents you from getting back into Recovery or download mode to restore your nandroid backup or use Odin
So here is what you do:
1) Plug your tablet into your computer (this is important!).
2) Hold down the home, volume down and power buttons until you boot into download mode. Once you are prompted, push the volume up button to enter download mode completely.
3) Now, once in download mode, hold down the power and volume down buttons (not the home button this time) until you screen goes blank (your tablet MUST be plugged into your computer for this to work!). Release the buttons and you will see the battery symbol on your screen. Your tablet is now off - thank god.
4) To enter Recovery mode, hold the home, volume up and power buttons down until Recovery loads.
5) Restore your nandroid backup if you have one.

Thank you so much Maxal I will do it so, indeed the text was terribly written I tried to make it better and more understandable, I read that actually Kies was the way to go for flashing back a bricked device, and odin was actually a risky thing, is that right ?

I don't know which firmware you should have as I don't know where you are from, but I don't think it should make much difference, the firmware I gave the link for is the UK one.
Maybe someone else can help with a link for the correct firmware for you.

OK, Thanks.
But please keep in mind for the future that the load to your Tab better the original firmware that corresponds to its original CSC Region code. This can help you avoid some of the problems in the firmware flashing. How it may be defined, you can read in this thread:

Hi maxal,
Download via KIES will not check root If you do not connect the tablet to a PC. It only checks the serial number and model type of your Tab for search new updates firmware with determine the correct CSC Region code. You can even download the correct firmware by KIES to your PC without having to connect the tablet and then save the file firmware (this requires some tricks) and flash it via Odin. To do this, you need only enter the serial number and model type of the device in KIES menu Tools -> Firmware Upgrade and Initialisation. More details have here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58527780&postcount=5
In this case you no need connect the tablet to PC. It also confirms ashyx here:
