If I go into those options and reset can it have a negitive effect on the phond?
I had to keep resseting clearing ALL dates because Google backup is extremely annoying in that insists on syncing my old settings.
Is this the same as factory reset they perform at t mobile or do they flash the Rom? I've noticed my m8 is a little slow lately. Maybe because I disabled Twitter Facebook bkinkfeed. I may disable Google plus as well.
It sure will, I heard for every factory reset the life expectancy of the phone loses one month

A factory reset will not, I repeat will not harm the phone. Whoever tells you otherwise is a moron

Since I received the Froyo OTA on my desire, I noticed that the backup is no more executed..Anyone noticed this?
The file on the sdcard/backup/HTC Desire are old of 3 days ago.. Are the backup files in any other location? How I can know if the backup is correctly exectuted now?
Could someone help me to understand this?
PS. Sorry for my english
Just to be clear..If I search Privacy I can see that the automatic backup option is flagged..So the backup should be executed or I'm wrong?
No one have this problem????
I do have exactly the same problem. Noticed this when I upgraded to the first froyo version, even the original htc betas.
No backup is done in the background, thus no restore option when upgrading the rom.
This scary me..Why the backup is not done anymore? Someone with others froyo rom have this?
200 people read this..and no one answer..hmm
Just found out this the hard way after doing a hard reset. All SMSs lost, all installed apps lost, all settings lost etc.
Even though HTC has led me to believe all my data would be preserved in their help and resource area:
"Your phone backs up the following types of data and settings whenever there are new additions or changes:
* Text and multimedia messages
* Settings in the Messages application
* Web bookmarks..."
As far as I can tell, my phone behaves exactly like OPs. There is a backup on the SD, but the last update to it was when I applied the official OTA update (which was stupid, since I was planning on rooting).
I too can search privacy to find the backup settings, which looks enabled.
I have read somewhere that on froyo, the backup is made automatically to googles cloud and not on the card. Not sure how to control this.

I've lost all privacy options from the settings menu. Any ideas?

This worries me too...
Did someone asked to HTC for info?
How with Froyo on the Nexus One? No backup on sd card executed too?
C'mon folks this is a pretty big issue... any ideas?
If you go to settings, search, searchable items and ensure phone settings is ticked then you can hit the search key and search for privacy. This leads you to the phone's privacy settings. Mine still shows the back up settings active, but I don't know how it works.

Yeah... I had that setting active also when i searched for privacy, didn't do anything though. Did the hard reset just to find out that there is no way to get your data back, not from the sd-card nor from google's cloud. Interesting that froyo was ment to improve the backup situation and htc's implementation destroys it totally. Same with the browser, i'm almost missing my 1st gen iPod touch browser.

Setting plug ins to on demand in browser settings removes any slow scrolling etc.

Didn't work for me, and there are a lot of people like me... Htc needs to address this asap.

That HTC backup wouldn't allow you to return to your older firmware, if that's what you meant.
Probably misunderstood ya.

When you do a hard reset its stated quite clearly that you loose all your data, including the backups. What you quote from HTC is the fact your stuff gets backupped when there is an update etc.
Factory reset is a.. well.. factory reset

Can't you restore your data like contacts / sms / mms etc from the sd card after a hard reset?
I have recently purchased a Desire from somebody who either has unlocked it or it is already unlocked it seems unbranded.
I have a problem in that their default email is stuck on the phone and I cannot for the life of me remove it after looking through google search the way it is carried out on a hero doesn’t apply here. I cannot get access to the market place!
If I go into menu->accounts and sync->manage account->remove account
It brings up a notification explaining that I must reset the phone to factory defaults? Is this a wise move? Or the only option here?
I am worried that this will leave the phone no longer unlocked. Common sense or past knowledge tells me this won’t be the case but the whole android thing is new to me... ?
Advice would be greatly appreciated.
Just do factory reset

Menu - Settings - Applications - Manage applications. Go to gmail and gmail storage and clear data. See if that helps. Sometimes this needs to be done a few times. Try turning off sync before you do it.
I replied to an email using gmail app and now its stuck on "sending".
I tried a reboot but no luck. Any suggestions?

Remove the account and add it back?
Clear cache and data for Gmail app. I've had this happen a few times.

I've had this happen before as well, and sometimes I think it might be something on Google server side, like it can take longer than usual for them to send an acknowledgement of reception? Idk.

Force Close the app and reopening it also does the trick if you do not feel like clearing cache and the like. It will work for a few and be fine then go right back to doing it.
Yeah, I've gotten this on pretty much every Android device I've owned. Pretty common problem and I wish Google would fix it. I just force close, clear cache..then resend.
will this happen with the other email app that came with this phone?
And how do you clear the emails cache?

settings/apps/find Gmail click on it and you can clear cache from there
I've had this happen a couple times before too. The first time, I didn't even know about it until my sister mentioned she never got a reply for so and so email even though I clearly remembered replying to it a week before that. So I went into the app and looked at my outbox and there was about 7 or 8 emails stuck in there that couldn't be set.
Made me a bit mad to say the least. And a year later, we are still having this issue.

I only ever had that problem with stuck outbox when I had a battery saver program "juice defender" running. Works perfectly ever since I stopped using and uninstalled the battery saver app. I read in another thread that those apps do more harm than good.
+1 to clear cache and data
I have had this happen, in over a thousand or so sent emails, four times, it was the same day, and only on 3g trying to send photos as attachments for work.
This has never happened when on wifi. I want to clarify that I use both gmail and the samsung included email app (I like it better for multiple gmail account usage for a few reasons I wont go into here). The samsung app, though it takes longer to load emails (even on wifi) I just like the feel of it better. Gmail sending is usually instantaneous, both apps have been super stable for me, I have adjusted their settings to run to my ideals, which includes hourly pings.

Hey, can someone shed some light as to why Clear Cache button is greyed out in the Gmail application? All I have is Force close and Uninstall updates. Everything else is unavailable.
Thanks in advance.
I have had this problem recenlty, I had to remove my account from the phone and add it again. It even stopped downloading new emails....smh
I think it's google though not the phones
Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, I had a quick scan of the threads and couldn’t see it.
Anyone else having issues accessing Contacts on G4 ? I presently have circa 300 contacts, all sync’d from Outlook, so they are quite detail heavy, some pics, many notes etc….
Whenever I go to access the Contacts it can take 10-12 seconds for the list to appear. I wondered if it was to do with the volume of contacts, so I removed 300 (as had 600 before), but it didn’t make any difference at all.
The ‘online search’ function is unchecked. The rest of the phones functions are working lightning fast, just the Contacts.
LG’s only suggestion is to “factory reset the device and try again” – brilliant.
I've already deleted all contacts and re-sync. Pretty much all apps have their contact sync turn off. Nothing I do seems to make any difference.
Any help / suggestions much appreciated. I’m at the point where I’m going to ditch it and go back to Samsung (I should never have strayed, grass is always greener etc…).
I hate to tell you this, but a factory reset will most likely fix this issue.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I had the same problem, and was resolved after a factory reset.
Did you tried to clear data??
Data clear didn't help sadly. Suspect I'll need to bite the bullet and factory reset.
Please sir if u know about how to downgrade lg g3 stylus

I had the same issue also. I think for me the lag was caused by having so many duplicate contacts even though they were merged. I uses contacts cleaner to some success but logging in to gmail and going to contacts then deleting duplicates seemed to do the trick. After that was done I made a vcf backup just in case, deleted all contacts then synced them again. Its lighting fast now.
Sorry for the long post but this has been bothering me for years now. It happened on my 2XL and now on my 6Pro. Maybe someone smarter than me who understands software/hardware knows the reason behind this. But WHY when I do a factory reset does each time through the setup (Android 12 in this case) feel different??
1. Firstly, why is it called a factory reset when it obviously retains at least SOMETHING on the device? For example after a factory reset, the next time through the Android 12 setup it automatically populated my gmail account into the field.
2. Once through the setup it was giving my Google Fi app errors: [X] Close the app [X] wait, etc. This seemed to go away after I went through the setup, updated all the apps multiple times, THEN hit "finish google fi installtion", THEN doing another factory reset during which that error no longer appeared.
3. Even screens during the setup seem glitchy or inconsistent. I've see some screens reappear a second time like after inputting fingerprints. I click the button to move on, and it asked me again about fingerprints. I ACCEPTED and thought I'd have to redo it all, but then it just moved on.
So yea, in summary it feels like every time through it's something different. Is this just android? Maybe someone can help me better understand this phenomenon.
I also had issues with Fi activating. It finally did it once I had finished setting up the phone. Maybe it needed an update? As far as something being retained like Gmail, this usually happens when you wipe from fastboot as this does not wipe the security of the phone. If wiping from within the OS via settings this should not happen. Not sure about the others.

I've noticed this over the years. For security a reset doesn't wipe everything, I think you would need to flash the factory images and clear caches for that.
My first setup experience was not good. Wi-Fi kept turning off (been fine since) during the first setup so it kept stalling and doing all sorts of funny things.
It's just Android and Google, everything is a BETA version it seems.
For item 2 that is FRP. Factory Reset Protection. The account stays in there unless you remove it prior to reset. If you reset with the account still in there it will insist you use that account to set up the phone. That way if stolen the thief can't just reset it and use it.
