[Q] custom rom installation - copy zip to sd card? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I am a bit confused about the process for installing a custom rom as the guides that i've read say to copy the roms zip file to the Nexus' sd card - but it doesn't have one! Where should I copy the zip file to then?
Cheers.

The internal memory is often referred to as the sdcard. If copying the rom from your PC, your 'sdcard' is what Windows will see. If you're downloading direct to your Nexus it will probably end up in the Download folder.

Thanks mrew42, that clears that up!
I'm thinking the Towelroot method would be the most straight forward to gain root access but am a bit unsure about the installation sequence for a custom rom afterwards, given that a lot of the guides deal with the earlier methods of rooting. Sorry for the newb questions but the last time I was on this site I was flashing roms to my dell axim....its grown quite a bit here since then!

Search the forum bud. The instructions should be in the thread you got the Rom from.

Copy the .zip to your SD card. Re-boot into recovery and flash the zip. Search if you need more detailed "how to".
BTW: This is not the best forum... next time, Q&A Perhaps?

Np. With rom's and updates you are typically putting a zip file on the root of your sd card and flash from there once you are in recovery.

Well its better than assuming you're fully rooted and know how to navigate recovery and actually select the zip you should have in the root of your SD card. The point is that this kind of stuff is repeated all over the forum. It is better to read before posting.

There's an excellent tutorial by joeykrim on flashing your Evo, as well as a little primer on using adb. The process will be the same for just about any other ROM you want to try. Just be sure to backup, and look into ROM Manager on the market as well. It's pretty user friendly.

If you have gone through as many phones in your sig as you claim to you should be able to figure out by process of elimination how to install it, not trying to be mean but people round here just need to think more, its a recovery you install it the same way you install any recovery like when you first rooted your phone. Check the stickies prolly something in there to answer your question too.
I usually did rom manager. Too lazy for all the extraness. Thanks anyway.

Not every knows the other methods. But seems people in this community can't be nice enough to just explain a simple thing. With rom manager you don't have to do it. It does it for you. Just tossing up my 2 cents.
Good looking out oon this. Flashed it and worked like a charm.

Before you guys keep on flaming, rename to recovery.img, put it on the root of your sdcard, open terminal, and type:
Su
Flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
I swear to god this knowledge should be a prerequisite before being allowed to post in the dev forums..

You don't get it do you?
This is FLASHABLE!
Without going into terminal, you flash it like a rom
Exactly. I didn't have to go through all the renaming nonsense for this. Just drop it on the root of your SD, boot into recovery and then flash. Simple.

He didn't try looking inside the zip. IF there's a meta folder it's flashable via recovery
LOL it's assumed when a recovery image is posted it is in the .img form, coz for a person first flashing stuff on their phone, they have to either flash a custom recovery thru Rom Manager, or the flash_image binary in terminal. It's impossible to flash a .zip without a custom recovery in the first place.
Just sayin...
Is there an overview of the changes in this version compared to the last?
I suggest people who want to know what the changes are learn to read github...

it's also probably assumed that any noob isn't going to be attempting an update of something they have no idea what it even is, or how to do so... for those that have a clue, they would know that all they need to do is extract the .img and place it on root of sdcard or whatever... just sayin...
Thanx for the Recovery & The laughs!!

What do you mean by "for those of you who missed wiping from recovery"? I wipe from recovery just fine on the latest Clockwork Recovery.
Why would you not take the short amount of time to list the specific changes in the OP for everyone?
Why would you not take the time to list simple step by step instructions for those who need them in the OP? (At least you added that its a flashable zip...prior to that there was no information whatsoever)
And I thought I was lazy...

su stands for superuser which us the command you use to gain root access.
Root is similar to administrator access on a windows PC. It let's you have access to certain portions of the filesystem you wouldn't normally have.
CWM is a tool that comes with a great backup tool called nandroid that will allow you to backup and restore your phone roms and settings. CWM can clean and fix some things that could be wrong with your phone, allow you to flash updated, custom roms, scripts, radios, kernels, etc.

You WILL need CWR to root. If you use the search in the development thread you can find a DL for it. I would stay away from the touch version but that's just my opinion.

Ok heres my update,
I used followed the instructions from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514434
I can get into CWM (non-touch) and I have the Superuser-3.0.7-d-signed.zip on my external SD Card.
when I am in CWM and goto install zip from SDCARD, I have only the lost dir.
Why wont this file show up??? that is the question and yes I have verified the file is ON the SD Card.
thanks for all the help!!!
Ciao~
try moving everything to your internal sd card, then install from there.
I almost included that, but NO I choose internal SD
edited my post.....
now when you say everything, are you just talking about the superuser file? becasue that is the only item I have on the External SD Card.....and yes I did use external SD card...but will try using the internal now.

You should have two options in CWM...to choose zip from SD card and external SD card. Just navigate to external.
Make sure it says choose zip and not update.

OK so what u need to do is this u can do it one of two ways A) u can use Odin to flash a custom recovery such as twrp or cwm, then use that recovery and flash the superSu.zip until it says its installed, to do this u need to place the zip file in the root of ur sdcard that means directly on ur internal sd, not in a folder, then flash from there, this is of course if u want to stay on ur stock rom and root it... Or u can do it the easy way and B) use Odin to flash a custom recovery such as twrp ( I reccomend twrp as it's more user friendly) then flash an already rooted custom ROM of ur choice, obtaining root on this device is very easy, I suggest B as its a lot easier for a new user to just Odin the recovery to the phone then flash a ROM...let me know if u need help I'll do he best I can

Phone NOT BOOTING UP NEED HELP ASAP

So my friend brings me his gsm nexus and is not loading up stays stuck and loading Google screen but does nothing from there..... I asked him what he had done and he said he went into cwm since he was having problems with his phone and decide to format everything on it sdcard/system/ etc etc etc..... I never done something so stupid before lol So I really don't know how to help him...... any way to be able to flash a stock rom maybe via odin ? or stock anything to get the phone to boot up again ? any help is greatly appreciated....... I could boot it up in recovery mode but since sd card is empty I can't restore any roms or any backups since he seem to have deleted them all
well your friend formatted the /system directory so there is no rom on there. of course it wont boot up.
follow this to go back to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
DO NOT USE ODIN.
also, tell your friend to leave the phone stock until he knows what he is doing.

yes as Z said that will fix the OP's phone
his 'friend' rooted his own phone and doesnt know how to fix it so he hands it to soemone else that doesnt know how to fix it? you should point your friend to XDA, its a great resource
I guess if you guys wanna say is me doesn't really bother me.... I use xda to flash and stay up to date with the community I am in no way a developer or claim to know what I am doing.... Just trying to help a friend out or like you guys say me.... Just trying to fix a phone I was the one that rooted the phone for him... Just don't see the big deal..... But hey if it makes you guys happy saying it was me that did it I don't mind no big deal just looking for help thats all.....

OP, you might want to uninstall the drivers you currently have for 'android 1.0' in device manager, reboot the computer and then try installing the new drivers.
Or use a tool kit to download a factory rom and flash it.
Edit: can't you mount the sdcard using cwm and copy a rom to the sdcard?
