I got my One M8 yesterday from an upgrade and rooted it, after I had rooted it I tried to S-Off with the Firewater exploit. However when I tried I get this error.
********** whelp, this sucks, firewater can not work on your device **********
********** no amount of reflashing, retrying, or ruuing will fix... **********
********** DO NOT COME TO IRC ASKING FOR UPDATES OR ETAS!!!!!! **********
********** if we are able to fix this issue, it will be announced **********
********** bye bye.....sorry it didn't work out. **********
Is there any other option to try or do I have to wait for a new exploit?

The only other alternative for S-OFF is Sunshine.
[Android][HTC S-OFF] SunShine for modern HTC devices
It's created by the same developers as Firewater but it seems to do the job. The catch however is, it's $25 through an in app payment method. Of course the program itself first checks your device for compatibility BEFORE you pay for anything, that way you won't end up paying for something that "might" not work. Might want to give it a shot and see, so far the people tend to view it as $25 well spent.

Well, at least you don't need S-OFF to flash ROMs so you could probably still flash Viper or ARHD or another and have some fun with custom ROMs if you want or just wait out until you're ready to go. At least the phone is still pretty fun in it's stock state should hold for a while :good:
Firewater S-Off doesn't seems to work for Me too...
I am getting error as screenshot attached ... tried many a times but not getting success of getting through, please help!
Sunshine works with all m8's. Waiting because you are tight on money could make you miss your chance.

I got this same message. After meticulous research, I found that there is absolutely nothing that could be done. I decided to fork over the $25 for Sunshine and it worked like a charm. There are no codes or cables or anything. It's an app on the phone and it takes about 5 min. Well worth the money as I was able to convert my M8 to a Google Play Edition.

Ok. Might give a try someday ... But first would research more further on other ways out coz shelling $25 for an app would be too much for now . Anyways thanks for the suggestion, sooner or later it will of help. :good:

You're not paying $25 for an app, you are paying a relatively small amount to the developers for the huge amount of work involved in achieving this. Development takes lots of painstaking hours, weeks, months to achieve something workable like this.
I know I have developed for Samsung devices and trust me $25 is perfectly acceptable if you want the developers to maintain an interest.
Tbh the choice is yours, either nobody bothers and there is no development and no S-OFF at all , so nothing for you to pay anyway or encourage the developers and say thanks by remunerating the developers for all their hard work.
Either way the choice is there, S-OFF for a small price or no S-OFF at all.

Just curious... What is it about firewater no longer working? I read something about the most recent OTA killing it. Is it firmware/ROM related?

It was an error on the part of the developers, they named it "Firewater" fire and water just don't mix/work which is why Firewater didn't work either.
Sunshine on the other hand is always a good thing, it's healthy and as such it works well and is in a healthy state too. The name is everything...

Hey Brother ... sorry if I made you feel Offended, had no such intentions and I respect developers and their work and their life equally as much you do. Without them obvious Android would had been so boring. Dont want to stretch it further so just writing to say a SORRY :highfive: if you felt bad & I've already downloaded the app and purchased the license yesterday night, would be using it as soon as I get my handset back from the service center. Facing certain USB port issues since morning.

Finally the s is off (gained S-Off) on my HTC M8 thanks to Sunshine app. :victory:
All I can say is money was worth spent, tried week long through all the means but could not get through it & finally read abt sunshine while looking for alternative and tried it & without any wires & commands prompts & hassle got s-off on my device. SO now the brilliance on my M8 is totally unleashed & will be now flashing custom ROM soon. Last but not least would like to give the credit to ashyx for diverting my mind towards going on with sunshine & BIG thanks to the team who developed this wonderful & extremely helpful app. :good:
Definitely would recommend to those for whom firewater doesnot work & wants to get S-Off & dont mind spending. !!! Go Ahead !!!

I'd like to offer my phone to the dev community to be used to achieve unlock/s-off.
If the person is jcase or a similarly well known dev for providing such things I'll be willing to let them borrow it for the project, otherwise I'll be willing to setup a remote connection on an extra computer I have for them to work with.
Devs PM me for contact information if you are interested.
jcase I know you have said you aren't interested, but if you can pass around the word in your circles I would appreciate it.

I think we should try and reach out to the Unlimited.Io team with this phone, and see if they are willing to help. Also you understand that doing this you risk bricking your phone and it is dead. you can have it back but it's a paperweight.
also some teams are only willing to work with certain ppl, if that is the case would u be willing to send it to that person to do the testing?
otherwise this is a great offer but if you expect to have the DEVs get S-OFF and your phone back 100% working, your dreaming, it's possible, but unlikely.
also if it does brick, there goes anymore testing.
but I'm sure they will have learned a lot from the brick.

Yea I have no idea if they want to help or have the time, but I worked with them with the Rezound and Inc4, so it's worth reaching out to them if we have this phone to test with.
FWIW I don't know why you posted that Jcase has the phone..
He specifically didn't want people knowing he has the phone because he does have a live ya know, and it doesn't revolve around unlocking phones TBH I don't even think he likes, or uses (I could be wrong).
IMHO, posting something like that is just proving why he isn't helping us, or has no want to.
Or maybe he is and he just doesn't want to get hounded about is he close, does he think he can get it, is he even working on it.
I am going to remove the quote from this post and I hope you will edit yours.
If I can get a response from a member on Unlimited.Io - one of the best teams out there, and some of the nicest people you can work with, it was a pleasure the times I spent with them. (I tried when the phone first came out, but maybe he hasn't signed on yet, so I tired another member tonight), I am not too sure how much money is a factor with them, but maybe if we get support from them, it will help re-assure people and up the bounty.

I would use this with cation, taking apart the M7 is really difficult unless you have the HTC tool they use. ( haven't heard of anyone that really has this tool yet.)
if they do it the current method, the screen will break and they might be replacing it with a knock off if they have to get to the insides.
my $.02
Edit: quick google search yielded this:

MODS: I come in peace. I work with and for the community for various projects, especially here on XDA. I have connection with many elite recognized developers and moderators on these forums and often work as a behind the scenes debugger for repairing bricked devices that are in BETA testing for free public solutions to benefit the community. This post is meant to be educational and to resolve questions about this service that has been raised. There are no DIY methods at this time or I'd be posting about that if so. Please contact me if you need references of such said developers before assuming I am a random bystander with bad intention.

No hard feelings at all for your cautious searching which is always encouraged when checking feedback on companies and people you may not know of! As for your edit with the BBB, we have been in business for around 4 years now. It's virtually impossible to not have something show up in the over 20,000 orders that we have done since that time. I'd urge people to see the literally thousands of positive references all over the WWW. Those 2 resolved scenarios were false positives where a customer could not reach us by phone on a weekend and quickly panicked. Just making a case for how it's impossible to keep a fingerprint free record especially online as we operate. It would almost be very odd to NOT have something show up with our amount of time in this business.
Now on to the fun stuff!
First off, I'd support a group buy of this as we did for the HTC Droid DNA about 1 year ago if someone heads up the original post for that as I will not be in charge of organizing such a thread due to conflicts of interest with this site and my business. If you are interested in that, the pricing will be better for all so please call me at 657-444-5824. The process is being done via JTAG and we have gotten very good at disassembling the phone. Contrary to the statement above your lcd is in no way compromised or broken as suggested. The device can be disassembled by skilled hands with virtually none to very little signs of entry. In most cases a user may not even be able to tell we opened the unit or the device will have some micro-entries near the volume button area which can only be seen within a 6 inch or less range. We even keep housings (new OEM) in stock just in case. The method is proven to work 100% for any HTC One with any OTA/RUU installed (yes even the 4.4.2 version). The video will easily display why this is currently not a DIY method. Don't worry you guys have some great devs that never stop cooking and I'm sure something will follow via USB. It could be weeks or it could be months. Until then, please don't shoot the messenger that is offering an S-OFF service as I work hard to even be able to produce these for the community!
Proof of concept video. By the way, @tomglass this is your device. Your phone is a star haha!

I'll be back in a week or two. Currently working out stuff for the M8, but I'll dig up my old VZW M7 files ;P.
For what it is worth, I removed my back cover last week to replace a faulty microphone, which is on the little board along with the charger port. Took me about 20 minutes, and as mentioned above, there is almost zero signs of disassembly. Proper tools are a must...

This is the first time hearing that the phone can be dismantled without the screen being destroyed. Kuttos to you guys. Its a hard process for sure. I retract my statement and apologize.
Second, I'm sorry for my overly cautious ways, I've seen to many members get duped into a good deal I tend to error on the side of caution. This is a great thing if you can successfully JTAG the One. I'm interested in the process and have worked with JTAG in the past.

This thread is extremely informative. Probably one of the most informative posts since the verizon 4.4.2 OTA came out. It sums up that there are services available to s-off. Pricey they may be, but to each their own. I love seeing developers and business owners come into the threads and explain in details. Hats off to mobile tech videos!

It is shipping today with root and your requested TWRP recovery pre-installed!
Interesting video, and it makes me question why the One was rated almost impossible to repair by ifixit. I still wouldn't want to try, but for someone who knows what he's doing it doesn't seem too outrageous.
Maybe the video makes it look too easy.

What if I don't have money to spend on software that 'unlocks' my phone? It used to be free with firewater and now people that couldn't know HTC is going to fix fw have to pay 25$ to allow full customization to their phones? BS.
Any other ways without this paid stuff to go s-off...?

Your phone costs $700 stock. Is $25 really too much to ask for to s-off and give you full access and to mod to your hearts content?
That being said, do you really need s-off?

I never said anything about it being pocket money here, and i am certainly not here to discuss a third world country. Everybody has his reasons why they do or simply can't afford it.
This whole type of discussion has been done several times now and it doesn't change the situation one bit unfortunately.
So i would say stop thinking and writing about it here as it's not helping you at all (not saying you can't give your opinion but this always ends the same way)
Get the money for s-off or stay s-on ! That's the only option you have.
Well you guys just went full on me. Sorry for 'spamming' the topic and have a good one.

Take note that Sunshine costs $25 dollar and requires sense based rom + non-debuggable boot.img + UB + root. The tool does work fantastic though.

There is no secret between HTC and sunshine. The developers of sunshine have no relation to HTC !
They develop sunshine because they have the knowledge. Now they support only their payed way to regain some income of lost (read bricked) devices in their process and the time they spent on perfecting these methods.
I can't blame them. Each device they brick is between 400-700 dollars.
Why nobody else is working on s-off ? No idea :
- No knowledge
- No time
- Not wanting to brick devices
- No need because there is sunshine
Building a tool like sunshine isn't easy.........it's not a soft brick when things go wrong. Developing a rom/software is completely different.

Its very rare for devs to work on a puzzle like s-off, when its already been solved. Quite simply, there is no reason to put forth what is a huge amount of effort, time and expense (for bricked phone, as Mr. Hofs already explained) for something that has already been done. It much more value added for devs to dedicate their talent and efforts to working on things that aren't already solved.
If you don't agree, roll up your sleeves and find your own s-off exploit. You'll find it cost a heck of lot more (in time, effort and cash) than the meager $25 the Sunshine team is asking for.
Also be aware that sunshine is developed by the same team that did firewater. They contributed to XDA and the mod community for free (or voluntary donations, anyway) for years before deciding to charge a mandatory fee for sunshine. Pretty clear that they were not motivated by greed, but merely by necessity to recoup lost funds.
But in reality, for most folks that think they "need" s-off, you probably don't. Its only needed to change CID/MID, manually flash radios, or modified hboots, and a few other things.
For the huge majority of other mods (root, custom ROM, etc.) you don't need s-off. Its nice to have, but its not really a necessity for many folks. If you need it, pay for it. If you don't way to pay, live without.

Yes that's what I mean
Like me I have m8 unlocked European v it's good to get s-off but it's not necessary for me if I want to flash Rom or use RUU just I need to relock bootloader even if I want to get OTA it's easy just unroot and back *stock recovery* @redpoint73 I agree with you

Theses are really good points that are being made, I've been flashing roms for a while now and have never needed S-Off but it would be nice a donation instead of waiting for AT&T to get their act together
I got my M8 on release day and s-off'd with Firewater as soon as it was released and played around for a few months. I then jumped to a Nexus 5 on Tmo for a while only to jump back to another M8 which I then had to use Sunshine. IMO, $25 is not much to get your device to where you want it to be and show support. I now have 4 devices per se because I can change and have changed my phone to the Dev Edition, TMO version, Int version and now rockin GPE. Just my $0.02

I know people have a mentality that everything in the custom ROM community should be free or donation-based, but...
If you are spending $500+, whether it's up-front or $25 a month for two years to your provider, $25 is a 5% premium (or one month's payment) to get it the way you want it.
If you haven't got $25... and I don't mean this in any kind of mean way... then maybe you shouldn't be risking bricking the $500 toy?
The Sunshine team are polite, helpful, IMMEDIATELY responsive in their IRC channel, and have excellent customer service. I wish I could say the same about many full-time paid software developers but I cannot. Those guys are aces, top-notch, and deserve your $25 for all the devices they destroyed making your exploit happen.
The biggest irony for me is that Sunshine was the reason I chose the M8 over the S5. I used to be a big Samsung fan until they started locking everything down six ways to Sunday. Knowing that I could S-off, and keep the freedom I did with my older devices, tipped the balance. For me, $25 was a no-brainer to essentially unlock every part of the device. It's almost like having a Nexus phone, but with better hardware.
As this thread has served it's purpose (to answer the OP's question).... I am closing it before someone feeds a magwai after midnight.
Thank you

No and no.
The current Oreo RUU is probably a leak, thus not official.

This explains the poor battery performance...
Why should anyone pay for the software. It should be free & optional donations. There should be another software than sunshine that other devs have released.
If it's free to flash an lg/samsung/sony than why would anyone pay for a software for HTC. Plus if your HTC bricks or you upgrade to another HTC you've gotta folk out another $25 (could be more depending on your country) each new HTC device you purchase. It's stupid and there should be a free software, just like there are for other brands of phones I've specified.

Would love to see a free way to bypass/disable secure boot on a modern lg/samsung/sony, I haven't. I've seen some very private, and VERY expensive tools to do so.
because donations wouldn't cover 1/10th of the cost of development.
What is stupid is the amount of complaints we see with people saying it is stupid. If you don't like it, do what we did. Develop your own. Invest your time, energy and money into it. Then give it away, but don't complain when donations don't even cover your phone costs, let along your other equipment, the specialized software, or your time.

Do you work for free or for optional donations only?
Do you tell every developer their software should be free or only some? What is the standard? What is your basis for deciding who should get paid and who shouldn't?
Do you know S-OFF isn't required for flashing custom ROMs on this device? I'm S-ON and for a good reason: it's more secure (against malicious code and user error) and it has kept me from flashing a problematic, unreleased, misreported htc ROM (the leaked Oreo for US Unlocked; official release has still not happened yet).

No. The alternative is more expensive, as it requires purchasing hardware (and the expertise to use it).
Secondly, IF there's an official Oreo for your variant, no, you don't need to be S-OFF; that would be silly since the point of S-ON is to prevent unofficial non-htc-signed firmware from being flashed to the device's critical partitions. There is not an official Oreo build for US Unlocked (617), for example, contrary to what's been misreported.
Well that's your opinion mate, I'm not implying the software is stupid. I'm saying if it's not free then it should be a one time cost, regardless of how many HTC devices you own . I own the LG v20 as well as the HTC 10. It was extremely easy to flash another rom on my v20. No cost or anything, just download LG Up, have the kdz file for the firmware and away you go but it's a hassle on the 10, seeming there's no other workaround to downgrade your firmware.

It is facts, not opinion.
You can flash htc devices without s-off, even easier than LG. So I dont even know what you are talking about, I dont think you do either.
If you dont like it, do it youself? We released a ton of free resources to get you up to speed, save you a lot of time and money, that we had to invest.
Look I'm learning here. I haven't had the 10 for long but don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. I found it straight forward to flash the LG and I wasn't aware that I could upgrade, downgrade with s-on

How would you like me to word it? You are making factually incorrect statements?
I have guides for download htc without s-off here on XDA, just like with LG, it depends how they set some versioning info.
So basically I can upgrade/downgrade without s off but I can't flash a custom rom right?

Oh so I can flash roms and such, as long as I have an unlocked bootlooder but to have the complete advanced experience such as flashing stock roms from another country other than mine you need s off. I'd like to apologise for my rant earlier, I was being hot headed

Amen to that...why I got out of hardware and software sole-proprietorship, even with making money. Tech is fun. Customers are not.
Have to be big enough to hire the guy "who deals with the customers so the engineers don't have to".

No, you don't. You can just wait for htc to release the stuff before flashing it and unlocking the bootloader strictly involves following htc's directions. Have you followed the instructions for whichever ROM you're wanting to flash?
