Does Smart Keyboard use extra battery / cpu?

I'm trying to figure this out, In my SystemPanel, it shows:
Total CPU time 17s
Time since start: 1 hr 9 min 52s
Avg Consumption 0.4%
I don't have a long sample of it yet, but I'm trying to figure out which situation is true:
#1. Smart Keyboard is using cpu,but so does the stock keyboard - the difference is the stock keyboard's usage is not reported in SystemPanel since the keyboard is part of the operating system
#2 Smart Keyboard is using extra cpu, whereas the stock keyboard would not. It's the price you pay for extra functionality
Can someone tell me which is true?

Hmmm. I just started using smart keyboard and haven't noticed anything yet. Gonna turn on system panel monitoring again and start checking on that. I guess it doesn't really make sense for it to use more. It's not that much smarter than the stock HTC.
If it is using that much CPU time then I will be uninstalling it till they fix it, It was like $1.99 i think too.

really hard to tell because I'm guessing the stock keyboard uses battery / cpu as well, i mean it has to.
I'm guessing it's comparable to the stock, really can't see how it could be much different, they're so similiar besides gestures

Goku, i see that you mess with the power management i like that... I have an idea, maybe you can figure it out or tell me whom to ask. We know that the power management changes (to battery saver) by default, and this is done by HTC native support, when reaches 30%.. So, my question is, can we make a simple script or a toggle to turn that on whenever we like? Maybe on 95% So, if i'm on the beach, and don't need to make all systems off and drop the cpu speed to 1GHz and reduce brightness etc., just to press that toggle and put it in that state..
That settings exist, just someone has to find the switch

yeah i do get what you mean my friend..Some other gent has asked me about this on the actual other thread..We can make a script and run it with script manager. just finding a way on how to break the code and make it so we can run the options as you say from 95% ..let me have a little dig and do a research and see if i can get someone to help me out or even ask the big daddy itself HTC

Hidden Powersaver Options: Use single CPU core

Hey all,
I wasn't able to find any conclusive details regarding this topic, maybe you guys can shed some light for me:
In the hidden HTC powersaver options for the HOX, we have the option to use "Reduce CPU speed"- which is set to 'on' by default and its function being explained as then only using a single cpu core and reducing the speed to 1Ghz.
Even though the explanation is rather straight forward I'd like to know exactly what this option does.
Does that mean the CPU is throttled for 'normal use' like browsing, using simple apps, (...) only and is being reverted to its full capacity when (eg) playing games? Or in other words, where exactly is the threshold here?
I find my HOX a lot smoother in response (ie scrolling, surfing) when de-activating this option but battery drain also seems to go way up.

Alright, did not realise those options only applied to the system when battery is below 30%.

Its hidden in the settings, you can access it through downloading Minimalistic Text in the play store then set up a temporary widget that leads to settings under activities and search for power saver settings. Then just tap on the widget and it should lead you directly there/

Are all of these options on this tab only effective on a battery lower than 30% because some of them say that the data conection is only on with the screen on..
And If it's only on a lower 30% battery I will leave them on otherwise I will just turn them of.

[SHARE] Battery Saving Techniques!

NOTE: Im turning this into a sharing thread where everybody can post and share their techniques on how they save battery consumption. I'll quote all the useful suggestions here in the first post
I would like to start off by saying that all ROMs basically consume badly just like the stock version. There could be little to no differences between them with regards to battery performance. Right now I would like to share my observation, on what I presume to be one of the best ways to save battery while maintaining good performance.
glennlevi's Technique:
1. Get Antutu Battery Saver Pro (Free version can be found in the market). Install and untick the option control cpu speed.
2. Using No Frills CPU, or any other built-in cpu settings app, select your default governor (bcm####) and sio as your I/O scheduler. Maximum Frequency should be your highest available, and Minimum Frequency your lowest available.
3. Manually adjust screen brightness in settings to about 20%.
4. Untick Background Data and Auto Sync in settings, under Accounts and Sync Settings.
5. Get Ram Booster (Free in market) and install. Open. Under settings, set Boost Level to aggresive, set whitelist apps and tick your launcher, sms app, keyboard, and Ram Booster and Antutu Battery Saver. Untick Show Overlay Widget in Overlay Widget Settings. Enable the widget in the notification bar, refresh every 5s, Report Style Dont Show. Under Advanced Settings, set Feedback to None. Clean Ram using this app everytime just before you turn off your screen or want to stop using your phone.
6. Drag down your notification bar and tap the Ram Booster Notification. Now wait a couple of mins while browsing through your phone (without opening any apps)
*You can use other task killers if you want, but Ram Booster is the best IMO. A better replacement however is 360 launcher's cleaner widget (which will save more memory, ram and battery usage since its all in one app)
7. Open settings and go to Applications>Running Processes and look at all running apps, you will see some auto-start apps like Beats Audio, DSP Manager, Google Mail, Google Maps, Google Playstore and others. Uninstall all user apps that have autostarted. Download Titanium Backup and use it to uninstall stock bloatware, like google maps and google mail, or other custom bloatware like Beats Audio (If you dont use them at all). Clean Dalvik Cache using Titanium Backup and Clean Cache using Ram Booster. Freeze seldom used apps like Google Playstore. Just unfreeze when you want to use them.
*You can use other apps like Root Uninstaller to remove system apps, but IMO Titanium Backup is the easiest to use and has one of the most functions.

Just to be clear, using Titanium Backup and changing CPU settings requires a rooted phone
Well, most custom roms are rooted anyways. Im just saying this cuz you might be running on stock rom

is this information have been confirmed? as far as I know fewer widget is low ram consuming and more battery friendly. notification will prevent your device sleep. notification for every 5 second?it will make your battery life decreased, a lot. on other hand, clean ram have been proved consume huge battery power.

most android app work with autostart. in fact, all you can see in android is actually an app. debloatware is a good recommendation, but a complete app removing? please make sure about the validity of these information.

As such, Im sharing this because
1. I think it might help other people.
2. I've tried it and compared it many times in many different rom, and what I recommend is based from my own experience
3. I know youre a dev. Im not, obviously. That doesnt mean I cant share what I think is useful. This is also backed up by the fact that Im not claiming Im sure that these actually work and that I can back it up with additional information. Again, this is just based on my experience.

Well, thanks anyways for noticing my thread. Now I know some of my suggestions may be far from the theoretical facts that you know, but there are times when actually testing something and comparing it with others yield better results than just looking up the figures. Thats just my take on it though, so Im not saying thats all there is to it.
Anyway, maybe I'll edit this thread and make it a SHARING THREAD instead. I'll just regularly view it and put all suggestions that other members have in the first post

not that crap if you realize it's 2011 android phone with $120 price. right now with that money you can find a lot better phone, but in late of 2011 there is only few choice on that price range.

Probably when there are already a lot, I will compile all tips to make one big guide which has been contributed by the whole community. Lets work together on this

hmm... seems legit
Cant argue with you on that, most apps are generally glorified task managers, there are a few good ones though.
That's why i'm planning to buy a new android this christmas, maybe S1 or S2 depending on my budget.

why not nexus phone ?
i do have plan to buy another android phone after i give my sgy to my girlfriend and back to my old rokr e6. but not this year. too much spending money for gadget this year.

Sir i want to ask you onething, offtopic, in nexus there is no memorycard slot, so we have to keep all data including gallery files and even a new rom in phone memory. If we want to flash a new rom, then how can we do that? While we wipe the data and cache before flashing all data will be deleted? The rom file too?.

[Q] Core and frequency control according to temperature

My N2 makes me crazy when it gets warm.
When it reaches about 36 celsius degrees it starts with frequency limit of 800MHz.
The second step is making 2 cores offline and at last my gadget becomes limited to 2 cores at a max. of 500MHz.
It becomes almost unusable for me when in car. I use two navis in multiwindow (Waze and Sygic) and AutoGuard recording in background with FullHD and in about 5 minutes it's restricted hardly.
I know it's for safety reasons but I think it's too strict.
Is there a possibility to raise the thresholds of these by a few degrees?
What kernels support this?
There is a nice app called Android Tuner which is able to set these tresholds but it is for Qualcomm CPU-s only...

Not exactly understand...
There must be a safe setting for it as with Perseus kernel the thresholds are higher, but not too much. I forgot to edit my question according my experiences with Perseus.
At least with Perseus I get a max of 1000MHz at most cases but it is not enough for me cause I use apps needing high resources.
Would You be so kind to write about the value to be changed in order to get higher thresholds?

If I understand you correctly. Then you could try trickster mod.
Or try saber kernel. I use this baked into the Jedi rom.

Thank You for the advice!
Now I had some time so I'm on Saber kernel and just testing.
The testing is awesome till now: the phone is working more powerful with this kernel and doesn't get hot so soon. :good:
Oh, now there is something strange, the programs get FC-s...
The phone is on charger, I ran AutoGuard in the background in FullHD, Sygic and Waze in MultiWindow, VideoPlayer in popup with a FullHD video and SuperPlayer in popup with another FullHD video. It was extremely fine but after a few minutes the players collapsed and AutoGuard had an error. The system is stable anyway. It seems I have to restart phone now...
Edit: After restart I got an old problem back: Dropbox is unable to run again... I loved Perseus because of this, on Perseus this problem was away... I hope that I won't get the other issue back with my WiFi... And it seems, AutoGuard became stupid too... :crying:
I don't give up and keep on trying to make them ok.
But I can't find the thermal control feature in Trickster Mod Donation altough I have just a minute for it.
I am reading Trickster webpage to get ahead...
Question: Are You using Jedi ROM and have no thermal problems?
In that case I'm going to try that ROM, cause I'm on hunting for a ROM that works with no problems for me.
I tried some lately and till now Omega v18 was the best amongst them. I tried MIUI, ProBam, Hawkish in the last days and I get problems with all of them or had non-working applications and/or features which ones are essentials for me...
Edit: mmmmmmmm, as see there is no Jedi ROM for international N7100...

the saber kernel to the best of my knowledge is underclocked so if you try to o/c it maybe that will prevent your fc's. I have read in the various threads, of which the community is very helpful, of some issues for heavy users due to the u/c.
Regarding the jedi rom i am a uk 7105 user and to the best of my knowledge i thought it would also work for international 7100 users?!?!

reading the op of that thread it would appear you are correct. I do know they are working on version 18 so maybe that will work for you. fingers crossed.

I'll keep on investigating for a solution.
Unfortunately the real test was horrible with Saber kernel, when I tested it in car the temperature got high soon and the thersholds were low again.
But it's a good idea to try o/c thank You very much!
I'll try it tomorrow, now I have to go to play Cod4... :laugh:
And I found that TWRP is recommended for Saber and a few minutes untouching after the restart so I'll try again.

I got some experiences with the newest Saber kernel and I like it 'cause the first kernel I can use 100MHz step with and using 300MHz step too.
It seemes to be good at battery consumption too. My only problem that this kernel doesn't support STweaks so I can't regulate charging voltages like I used to. Perhaps only Perseus kernel makes it possible as I can't get any other programs for it till now. Or NEAK kernel and the new versions of AGNi pureSTOCK kernel as I read their pages. I'll try them some day. But Perseus is my favourite.
I think it's important to say that the kernel isn't UC/OC by default so this doesn't make any problems and it's not UV-ed too.
I set min. to 100MHz and max. to 1920MHz to test and it's stable till now. I tried to Overvolt slightly and had no change on media programs behavior they don't like each other as I see.
Trickster Mod is nice 'cause it shows the CPU temperature which was helpful to understand this regulations of thermal control are needed.
When I tested it turned out that CPU is below 70 degrees while the battery temparuture is 'only' about 40 degrees.

wow. Ok i think i understood most of your post. probably a little bit over my head but i need to learn.
I really like the new kernel im getting 1% battery drain an hour with the screen off which truly is unheard of for me,
The kernel runs real smooth apart from when i play asphalt 8. Or i should say it runs smooth playing the game until the phone tries to do something else. For example if it attempts to update a programme or if a message/email comes through. then the game just lags and i have to wait for the phone to stop multi tasking before the car starts to move normally again.
So im surprised to read you say the kernel isn't uc/uv by default??? I was pretty positive it was. But i dont know for sure and im probably not clever enough to figure it out lol.
I wonder what settings i would need to increase to aid the phone in its multi tasking? Also there must be some kind of programme we could use that would test our specific phone/cpu and tell us which settings it would prefer. As i believe each phone will run slightly different?
You are right i remember reading the kernel does not work with stweaks.
I wish i could work with you and figure out how to optimise our settings but i simply dont have the skill set.
I presume you used trickster to overvolt slightly?

No, I didn't overvolt at last. But once I tried and didn't helped on my problems.
Unfortunately now I'm back on Perseus kernel again 'cause some issues with Saber. It became crazy every time and locked my CPU on 160MHz only and only reboot helped.
The other issue was the stuck system server process what was active all night and didn't stop hard work.
Now I'm on reading the kernel's page till I get cleverer on it... then I perhaps try it again 'cause I liked it.
