Yes, it has been confirmed that rooting work towelroot does not trip Knox. But once you root, if you flash custom recovery, you will.

Boot to Download mode and see if it says Warranty = 1. 1 is tripped, 0 (zero) is not tripped.

I'll bite. If it's tripped, then what? because this appears to be what I've done to my SPH-L710, build L710VPUDND8.
I rooted with towelroot, installed supersu 2.01, installed root checker, and then clockworkmod ROM Manager 5.5.3.7. root checker says I have root. when supersu runs, it asks if I want it to try to disable knox. I say yes, and after 5 minutes, it's still trying. I figure that after 5 minutes if it hasn't been successful, it never will. If I try running something like root explorer to search for files called "knox", it also produces nothing after 5 minutes or more.

If it's tripped and you still are under the Samsung first year warranty, then they probably won't fix it because the warranty is invalid. That's the only caveat if it being tripped. Reported by many Sprint and Best Buy will still cover it unset extended warranty and don't even look at the Knox status.

Bricked phone. Please help!

Hello. Hubby tried to root his galaxy S3 thru Odin and now the phone is bricked. We have tried many things on forums and YouTube but the phone will not connect to the computer now. It won't even turn on. It's just stuck on the downloading screen. Please if you can help us in anyway, to get it unveiled we would appreciate it.

Just in case you haven't tried yet, first take the battery out of the phone and leave it out for at least half an hour, all night if you can stand it, reboot the computer that you're trying to connect it to, try a different USB port, even try a different USB cable.
What did he Odin to the phone?

Sent from my SM-N900P using XDA Free mobile app
No, it isn't necessarily trash. Try my suggestions from my previous post and let us know the results of at least getting Odin on the PC to see the phone when you put it back in Download mode after leaving the battery out for a long while. Also, what version Odin? Try running it as Administrator if on Windows Vista or newer. Don't actually try to Odin anything yet. We'll walk you through this if it's recoverable.
Does he know what version of Android he was on? And what, exactly, did the instructions have him try to Odin?

[Q] Time to update ROM with Knox bit tripped, how to avoid a brick

So back in December while updating to the newest version of MOAR, I made this mistake of taking the OTA update and getting Knox. I managed not to brick my phone at the time, but ended up with the Knox bit tripped and a lot of concern that further experimenting would result in a dead phone and a forced replacement. Anyway, fast forward to now and its time to update again (some apps are starting to get unstable because they have been updated but my ROM hasn't), but I want to make sure I don't risk bricking the phone thanks to Knox.
If I remember correctly, the fact that I'd contracted Knox and tripped the bit already meant that I was stuck with the same bootloader, but I could update everything else. Is this still the case, or has someone figured a way around the issue in the past six months so that I can get rid of Knox once and for all? Also, since I haven't looked at any of this in the last 7 months, what exactly would the process be to update to the newest version of MOAR without updating the bootloader (if that's still what needs to happen)?
Thanks
You can downgrade everything but bootloader and modem. You can upgrade everything.
Flashing custom ROMs don't include bootloaders or modems, so have no fear. Only Odining the stock ROM, taking an OTA, or specifically finding a way to flash those upgrade them.
Just flash the latest MOAR or whatever other ROM you want to, as always.
The only exception to this is to flash ND8 (TouchWiz 4.4.2) based ROMs you need to have taken the ND8 OTA or Odined the stock ND8 tar first, otherwise you may brick your phone.

The only valid arguments against Knox (IMHO) are:
1. Once the warranty counter is tripped there is no way to reset it.
2. You do not have the ability to downgrade modems/bootloaders.
Myself, rode warrior and many others have had no issues directly related to Knox....

The problem is the way in which those issues manifested. Samsung essentially slipped Knox into the update almost without warning and with virtually no documentation. As a result many of those who were affected found out about it as a result of a bricked phone which was now permanently marked as ineligible for warranty work. Had Samsung made it clear what Knox was capable of and provided proper documentation of its function then I don't think many people would have had any problems with it.

I'm in the same boat, I've been trying all day to get this to work. None of the Jelly Bean guides seem to work on 4.4.2. I just tried flashing the SuperSu via the recovery with no luck. Hope someone helps out, my Super keeps giving that message.
I install Philz recovery and root from from there and install supersu work better then cf auto root.
Is any downside by rooting this way?

[Q] Most current stock ROM?

I'm trying to upgrade from an older version of MOAR to the most current stock ROM so I can get rid of the update notification. I have already made the mistake of accepting the OTA update that had Knox in it and subsequently tripped the Knox bit, so I'm wanting to be careful about what I do to ensure I don't brick the phone. I have downloaded the stock ND8 ROM and attempted to Odin it in, but the update failed, which I'm assuming is a result of Knox for some reason or another. The question is, is ND8 the most current ROM? If not, what is the most current stock ROM so I can get that to work with, and if so, how can I install this with Knox in place?

Knox will not prevent you from Odining anything. If you try to Odin any stock ROM older than what the version of your bootloader is, the phone will brick, but you can Odin the stock ND8 tar all you want. You may or may not know this, but be sure to unzip what you downloaded because the tar file is inside.
You can also (separately) Odin recoveries like the very latest Philz Touch Recovery tar.md5, and which is the only one known to work 100% under TouchWiz 4.4.2 on the SPH-L710.

I did unzip the download to get at the tar.md5 inside. That's what's failing to work with Odin. What is the most current version of Odin? I've been working with 3.04, but I'm not sure if that will work with the newer ROMs, though this has never been an issue in the past, so I doubt this is the problem.

FYI, I prefer (and successfully use with ND8) v3.07 because for some reason it allows me to uncheck the auto reboot checkbox after loading the tar, but with v3.09 it stayed grayed out. I didn't investigate if that's configurable via the ini file.
Another thought. With just one other person the problem was what they used to unzip it. What did you use? Whichever it was, try something else like 7-zip, or 7-archiver on the phone.

[Q] Help rootin my spring sgs3 4.4.2

I went through all these steps with no success at rooting:
1. Turned on developer mode.
2. enabled usb debugging
3. booted into download mode (Vol down/home/power).
4. started odin 3.0.7
5. left autoreboot and reset time checked.
6. pressed "bin" and selected the "CF-Auto-Root-d2spr-d2spr-sphl710.tar.md5" file
7. clicked start and let it reboot.
I've also tried unchecking autoreboot and after odin was finished, pulled out the battery and rebooted manually. Why can I not get root access? Please help!
CF-AutoRoot has only worked on TouchWiz 4.4.2 for a few people. Most of us either flash the latest SuperSU.zip downloaded directly from Chainfire's website or use Philz Touch Recovery's re-root option in the Advanced menu I think.
Personally, after CF-AutoRoot failed for me I had to re-Odin either (I forget which) the stock ROM and Philz, or just Philz.

the latest Philz is 6.48.4 and i used the .Tar.Md5 Odin flashable and you can always try using Towel root
Hell, just flash the already rooted but completely stock either Odexed or DeOdexed stock ND8 ROM put up by Cnexus in development (non-original).

Just flash an already rooted custom ROM like what's in my signature, or if you want completely stock but rooted, you can find Cnexus' Odexed (like original stock is) and Deodexed (more easily modded/themable) copies of ND8 in the development (non-original) section.

I'm just looking to be able to tether my phone for internet access to my laptop. My understanding is that root will give me this access (on sprint obviously). Not sure I want to do a custom rom as I don't really fool with y phone in that way much. Gonna try the deodexed and see how well that works.
Can I flash the rooted deodexed with philz recovery? I just tried it and my phone still doesn't show as rooted. I went into recovery and selected install zip/choose zip from /sdcard and selected the deodexed zip. What gives?
I think the de-odexed worked cause now I have root access. Thanks for all the help!
You're welcome!
Did you flash the Deodexed tethering mod (also in the same section as the rooted stock you used)? It's great having unlimited free tethering.
