Hey there, I've been using Xperia ZL for around 6 months now and it suddenly started losing network, randomly it will reboot. And one fine day it didn't turn on..I just get SONY logo for 3 seconds then restart.
I gave my phone under warranty in Sony Service Center..its been a week and they called me yesterday tell me that your phone has some internal motherboard problem, but current we don't have stock of that..so we can provide you with a new Xperia Z if thats fine with you.
I said its fine but will it be a brand new piece? They said that it will be brand new but you wont get it like fully packed with box and all.
Also they asked me which color I want..
will get the phone in 1-2 days..
is this some kind of trick? providing me a higher model of phone for free?
please suggest.

What? Xperia Z is not higher model.
Both were same price over here (roughly) and have the same specs.
Unless you want the waterproof feature, ZL is the better phone in my opinion.
Way smaller bezels, way shorter, infrared, +50mah battery, camera button (!)

The Xperia ZL is almost 100€ more expensive than the Xperia Z in new condition nowadays, so they aren't really giving you a 'higher model', they are kind of tricking you out of your money!
I can only speak for german prices but here are the amazon links:
http://www.amazon.de/Sony-Smartphon...UTF8&qid=1403897688&sr=8-3&keywords=xperia+zl
http://www.amazon.de/Sony-Smartphon...=UTF8&qid=1403897712&sr=8-1&keywords=xperia+z
No its certainly not, the links you sent have Xperia ZL with 4G/LTE and Xperia Z is without that. So obviously Xperia Z will be cheaper in that case.
I saw prices in my country and Xperia Z is priced more.
Same here in my country. Z costs more than zl.
Xperia Z
Finally got my hands on new Xperia Z, bdw its totally brand new with those transparent thin stickers, they gave me its box too but with all accessories removed, got two screen protectors one for back and one for screen.
Its so premium than ZL
And i compared the screen with another ZL, it is so much different, blacks are really black, zl has little grayish black both phones at full brightness, and i noticed camera is much better with a higher contrast.
doesnt have IR blaster but thats fine..
All hail Sony..love u.
Moving to Xperia Z sections now..

WOW! The very same thing happened with me. The only difference being my ZL was an year old, almost out of warranty(i.e had a couple of weeks to go when I dropped it at the service center). The phone just wouldn't power on. They "replaced" my ZL with a Z saying that they've got no stock(ZL) and won't be able to repair it.
However, the Z what I got was a refurbished one and had it's rubber finish peeled off in many places and the camera lens was scratched as well. They just didn't agree to replace my ZL with a new Z(was in excellent condition except for the power button which had faded off). The Z didn't even come with a screen protector. My ZL had a screen protector and the only real scratches were over the screen protector.
They apparently tried fooling me by offering this as an "UPGRADE". But back then, the reason I purchased the ZL due to it's smaller frame size..
Bloody cheats. Eventually I managed to sell it and got a good deal for another handset..
I'm having the same issues but my ZL is out of warranty. So it's definitely a hardware issue?

The best choice is to see the xperia z that they are ready to offer.Check for any external damages. All replacement that you get now from a service center will usually be a used mobile/spare mobile.Since xperia z is costlier and have water proof feature as an incentive you can go for it.Be warned xperia Z does not have IR blaster and camera button as in xperia zl.

It is quite normal I had a faulty z1 and they sent me a z2 as replacement.... If the stock is low due to low production, they give the one available to meet sla...it probably cost them almost the same... Probably higher to manufacture older models if the parts are not in stock

As some of you remember I dropped my HOX last week causing screen brightness problem.
I just got a reply from the service saying that the main board and battery has to be replaced(fortuntely they said this will not cost me anything as the phone is on warranty... )))) )
Do you think they are right considering that the phone appart from the screen brightness problem was working just fine?
Yes - not sure why you are even questioning it considering you are getting a virtually new phone out of it.

Just wondering because it doesnt seem very logic and it will take at least 2-3 weeks to fix as they have to order the main board.
Needless to say I am pretty happy with the service as they dont even try to charge me with anything.
They're unlikely to spend Warranty money doing unnecessary work, so just accept it.
You need to bear in mind, there are actually very few replaceable parts in these devices. There is the LCD, which tends to be basically one piece with everything sandwiched together (I know you can replace digitizers and surface glass separately, but the LCD unit comes as one pre-fab piece). There is the battery. And basically everything else is soldered to the mainboard.
Before one week they repleaced my HOX with new one. I have Black Screen of dead. They worked one month on the old phone and after 30 day they repleaced with new one and extend my warranty with 60 days. I am so happy naw with my new HOX. And this with stock rom and relocked bootloader. They did't say nothing for the relocked bootloader
Better be lucky to get a new battery on an old device.
I wish mine would have a new battery and not it's old, worn out one
My battery was worn out too so I cant say I am unhappy that I will be getting a new one and a new main board too.I do get that this is like getting a new phone but the wait to get it on my hands again is killing me.They said it will take max 3 weeks and that I might also get it next week.I do believe them...

One more thing to
add is that all this is cost free and the screen was replaced on May again cost free although I had ruined it spilling alocohol on it.All in all only the cover will be left from the device I purchased last November. One question though I asked for the cover to be replaced with the white one accepting the cost but they declined....Why is that you think?

Hello, dear all users of Xperia ZL...
I'm planning to buy a ZL, I've been thinking about it more than a month to purchase this phone.. I've watched several reviews, advantages, and disadvantages of it. But here in XDA, recently I realized some people faced a problem related to ZL when suddenly shut down itself because of several reasons, like the battery, etc. It looked like because ZL has built-in non removable battery, this kind of problem occurred. And for some people, changing the battery will fix the issue...
Now after knowing this kind of problem, I got myself in dilemma. I mean, this kind of problem is quite serious I think because it is related with the hardware. If it is only about LED, app, or any other software problem, it is not really matter for me, beside if it is already serious I still have XDA.. But if related to the hardware, I'm afraid my purchase will be a total waste...
So, I want to ask to you all, the users of ZL.
Does the newest Xperia ZL phone on sale might still have this kind of problem? Or Sony have already fixed it somehow recalling ZL released on 2013?
Thanks a lot for all of you in advance..

I own an Xperia ZL, bought on Oct 2013, initially, yes, i had an issue of the phone going into deep sleep and being unable to wake. That was on 4.2.2. Activating stamina mode made the sleep of death problem even worse. And back then, the battery was only able of sustaining a day's moderate usage. But since Android 4.3 was released for the ZL, all those problems have been cleared. Now, the phone performs as smooth as the Z1. it has all the camera apps as well which i think are great. Stamina mode runs very well as it should be , and no more battery drain issues. As for your query as to sudden shut down, i think its because the battery overheated. Yes, the phone can run quite warm, if you do hardcore games for long periods, like say, 45 minutes non stop , i personally have never experienced sudden shut down's before. DO also note that if the ZL gets into the occasional freeze or deep sleep, it has an advantage over the Z- a hard reset button beside the simcard slot. On the design front, there is something interesting to note of the ZL's frame. It feels different to that of the Z. the Z's frame is plastic, but the ZL's frame(for the white version) feels metallic(likely aluminium). when you try using your finger to scratch it, the Z's frame is rough, but the ZL's is smooth and hard.

Yeah, I think I did aware that overheat battery is also causing the phone to sudden death. But what I found were quite horrifying, because after the sudden death happen, they cannot turn on their ZL unless they put it to wall charger, some of them also experienced their ZL bootloop even they didn't root it yet. Many of the ZL users fixed this kind of problem by replacing the battery. These problem occurred after the sudden death of the ZL. Are these for real? I mean, getting in touch with replacing battery means this is a ridiculously hardware problem.
I'm wondering is this still happen nowadays with ZL users?

well, in my country only C6502 is available for sale. mine was fine. and people that i have come across generally, never had any problems with their ZL's... so perhaps this might be regional/model issues? try seeking for comments from local people who own a ZL to see what its like. Sony Mobile's support in my country is absolutely horrible. i'm not sure about yours, but the service centre here is very very very poor in service and timing. So i definitely wouldn't want a Sony phone which would have issues.
Got my C6506 (new) OCT 2013.... no hardware issues..... the odd software issues here and there (Google TTS crashing, running the .569 version)....... most irritating thing about the C6506 is its 1-2 months or so lagging in updates.......
I have a C6506 too. I've had mine for just under a year. And no issues for me except the black dots on my pictures. I'm just praying I don't get the power death issue as well. I've even pulled out my old Motorola Atrix and got it flashed with a solid ROM, just so I have a backup device in case.

Had that sudden power off issue, still my phone was without warranty so I had to change the battery. Reasons are: horrifying battery quality+hard gaming, played like 4 horus/day for 2 weeks and the problem begun. ( no clocktweaks at all! )
If you buy a phone WITH warranty, and it's truth the fact that the phone's production stopped I totally encourage you to do so, best case scenario you get the problem and get switched for a better model ( if you check sony's support forum you'll see some exchanges for "Z" or even "Z1" models ). Worst case you get the problem on 366 day and you buy a new, cheap by then, battery; not such a bad thing, the phone will keep on working for +20 bucks or so
I'm owning my C6503 since mid April 2013. Never had a sudden power off. Since June 2013 I haven't been on the stock firmware and never had any hardware issues.
Go for it!
I've had my ZL for a bit more than 4 months now. It was rooted from its first days till some weeks ago that I flashed stock 4.3 to it. Now it's working better than 4.2, but it's un-rooted. (Hoping for a rooting method for when 4.4 is available, please @DooMLoRD!!)
Never had any issues of any kind. Solid, big yet compact and beautiful looking device, now at a very good price.
But you have to consider; if you are a guy or a girl that spends most of his/her day outside (with little to no rest-to-recharge possibilities) you will need a battery bank of at least 5000mAh to go with you so you can really use yor ZL the whole day without compromises. Otherwise your ZL will die on you in +-8 hours of usage due to the high screen brightness you need when you're outside a building and you won't be able to play anything. Ha
The ZL's battery -now- can last up to 12 hours under moderate usage on the go, and up to 22 hours if you have a job that needs you to concentrate and stop touching your device for 8 hours, in such cases you only touch your device for little moments till your working day is over.
All in all this is a great device; fast and powerful enough for any task. Its camera and all is good. But I'll get a 10000 mAh battery bank as soon as I can cause I feel that way I can really make this babe shine that splendid screen, and not to have it at low brightness because of the battery. But that's me. Why 10000 mAh? Cause the 5000 or 7500 ones are almost as big and heavy as the 10000 one, and just a little bit more expensive. Reasonable, huh? And I can carry one anyway.
I hope this helped you.
- Leonardo.
Pd: Soon I'll be posting my trick for the ZL's screen, to make it look almost like the IPS screen of the G2.
And the black version is better looking for me.
First of all... Thanks for all the replies guys.. I really appreciate all your feedback and suggestions..

So apparently, the newest 4.3 firmware works flawlessly without such power death issue as far as you know right? Because actually that problem I've found seems like when ZL is still several months after released and looks like still not getting this newest firmware update... That's why I need to confirm whether there is still such problem for newest ZL out there...
Thanks for the suggestion about black color btw, I'm actually planning to buy the black one...
And for other members that haven't shared their experiences in using ZL, I really hope you'd share.. because I'm like a lost girl at a forest, I need to know if I really should buy this overwhelming device.. I would really appreciate all of your feedback, guys...

i agree to everything the Sw33t_Lov3r said about the battery.
I have a Galaxy s4 and my wife has the ZL. The ZL is a bit wider than my S4, so I find that I have to use it two handed more often than the S4. The screen viewing angles are terrible on the ZL. This is a problem when my wife is trying to show me a photo sitting across from me and all I can see are washed out images. Camera and battery life are average at best. On the positive side, the ZL screen is very good in bright sunlight. The software is excellent and Sony's Small Apps are a nice touch.
Edit: The ZL has the black dots in the camera, which is really poor quality control from Sony.
Edit: To the OP, I would not recommend the ZL.

Now that you mention it, I just know about the ZL camera issue..
Thanks for the feedback..
I know that ZL actually has several disadvantages, but I dont really mind if they're about hardware that not really affect the performance, as long as it is works like it should be..
That's why I aimed for ZL, because I don't have anything across my mind beside ZL that has those performance.. Now that I found some more issues, I don't really know what should I buy with similar performance and price if not ZL..

Dang! You're right! I held them up one on top of the other, and the S4 is wider.
Not sure if it is because of the sharp corners, but with the ZL I seem to have to stretch my thumb more.

I found this site. Its based in Indonesia.
Do you have, or are you able to get a Visa Debit card?
Its a card that acts like a debit, drawing money from your own accounts, but you can use it for online purchases instead of a credit card!
hi all,
somewhere it was mentioned that this device was actually ignored and not discontinued by sony due to the issues related to the hardware or something. I just recently purchased this and im actually worried bout this. was my decision to buy this particular handset a wrong one?
no its not like that..its's still available here in my region....
Not really.. it has the same hardware as xperia Z.
Except for infrared blaster.. which, yes had a hardware issue (which can be exchanged if you bring it back).
If i was discontinued in your country, it's because Sony put all marketing towards Xperia Z, not ZL... which I understand because it had something the competitors didn't have: waterproof.
I still hope they will make a ZL2 though, waterproof .
Its discontinued because its old and past its life cycle. Same with the Z. Just because carriers have the phones, doesn't mean Sony is still making them. But If you by one brand new, even if its a year old, you will still get full factory warranty, so don't worry. But most android flagship devices have roughly a 3 - 5 month production life. Then its on to designing the next one while the older models slowly sell out. Only a handful sell enough units to keep production going, like Samsung galaxy "S" flagships, and possibly even the HTC one. Although with the financial state of HTC, I don't think the one was enough to pull them out if the fire.
But I wouldn't worry about your purchase. This type of tech gets "old" within 3 months of release. I mean the zl came out with the snapdragon s4 pro, then a month the later we had the HTC one and S4, with the snapdragon 600. Then we got the Z ultra with the snapdragon 800. Now that thing is old news. Lol. Technology drives me nuts!
Sent from my C6503 using Tapatalk
It's all about marketing as wrote ATRIXXIRTA, Sony makes money selling new devices...in certain way forcing people to buy new models.
Anyway I am happy with this device.
They put a 5 inch full HD display on a compact chasis, with infrared controller (works fine for me), great hardware inside, support for external memory and with FM Radio
Remember iphone arguments about size? It cannot be bigger because of one hand use? Or samsung explaining why they removed fm radio from galaxy S4?
They said too that external memory cards are becoming obsolete because of cloud storage? Come on, just marketing dudes
Its true. The ZL is one of the BEST all arounder's out there. If the Z or Z1/2 was the same size as the ZL, it would be the design to beat. Or the moto x if it had an SD card slot, lol

There are aspects of the screen on the ZL that could be better...
Overall it's a really nice phone and I'm fairly happy with battery life, and performance.
Bad experience
I had just bought the phone in the beginning of feb and had a good time, enjoyed my phone. Unfortunately, the battery started giving a problem on 10 of this month, phone only starts through charger, once charger is plugged out, the phone switches off. Gave it to the customer care at Mumbai, India & they said my phone would be replaced. After 10days they got me phone that was used and scratched, it also had glue at back of the cover.
Just having a bad experience as my phone was brand new & now they are giving me a **** of my money. Bad customer service from Sony.
That's total bull**** man. Make a video and post on YouTube and spread it as much as possible. Might not seem like much, but if it gains enough momentum, Sony will take notice. Mine Is also starting to give me issues. It will shut off randomly if it gets warm, and it will only boot plugged it. Today for example, I was using navigation for about half an hour, and it just shut off randomly. And I couldn't power it on until I plugged in the car charger. I can.unplug and use it however if it cools enough. It's fu#ked and I'm passed! I'm thinking of ordering a replacement battery. 22-25$. I'd rather have it.BEFORE this one craps out, and not wait until it actually goes, then wait 2 weeks for a battery!

Ya I've taken apart NUMEROUS phones and tablets. The ZL should be a piece of cake compared to some other devices like iPhones, or even the htc one x. That thing was a *****! Lol

.. you should first check if the phone boots correctly and if the battery is ok. A lot of ZL's have problems with the battery. If everything is ok, the phone is just great!

I can confirm that. It is actually really easy to replace the battery on that phone. You just need a small phillips screwdriver and a plastic tool to open the device :good:

Hi, I have the same problem, the phone just starts via charger, once charger is unplugged, the phone switches off if an application is running
I have to buy a new battery, surely it take to get to Colombia approximately in 20 days:crying:
Hey, had my Z1 Compact for a week now and I've noticed a very annoying issue where sometimes when using the touchscreen to drag, say for predicitive text, the drag line will stop and then restart after missing some of the screen. This is results in having to retype a lot of text, and also requires multiple attempts to unlock the phone with a pattern.
I've replicated this in Settings --> About phone --> Diagnostics --> Test Device --> Touchscreen.
Basically if I keep trying to draw a 4 on screen for example, maybe 2/10 times it will miss part of the drawing. This isn't always the same part, so I dont think it's a dead section of screen.
Anyone else had this problem? Any solutions? BTW I've not put any screen protectors on yet, not even the one in the box as it looks like thats just a replacement for the factory fitted one.
Cheers
Many users are having this problem including me. I have faced this issue just once so I am waiting to get the issue again before going to service centre.. This problem is common in micromax and sony devices.. And from my previous experience I can clearly tell that this is hardware problem.. Dont know how some people told it software issue.. Day by day this problem will increase and soon the screen will be unusable.. I can say that charger may have some relation with this because in my previous micromax the problem started while charger is plugged in and after some days the problem began without charger..

Good point about charging. I have experienced this with previous phones whilst plugged into a cheap charger. I put it down to the charger not being powerful enough. In the instance I mention above, the battery is fully charged and not plugged into the charger. Plus the only charger I've used so far with it was the official one in the box.

You might wanna use some other charger I haven't actually faced this problem more tab once cause I've used the original charger only a few times N it's in best interest to use a lower output rated charger might take longer, but it's best for the phone N it's battery

I dont think the charger is the issue as it happens when it's not connected to the charger and it's been rebooted since. This is a different issue to what I talked about with previous phones and cheap charges whilst actually charging.
I've searched the net and it looks like a fairly common issue with some Z1s and Z1 Compacts:
http://johnhaller.com/blog/2014-03-06--sony-xperia-z1-z1s-touch-screen-issue
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z1-Compact/Touchscreen-loosing-touch-issue/td-p/580111
It sounds like the Z1C can come with 1 of 2 different screens, and only one of them suffers from this problem. Also, if you dont use swipe unlock or swype text then you probably wouldnt have noticed it anyway.
Reading all the comments, it's hoped that a firmware update will fix this, but no confirmation from Sony if they will do this and when.
The place where I got my phone from has offered to replace it so I'll take my chance with another one and hope it's from a different batch that doesnt suffer this! Awesome phone, but having swipe unlock and swype text nearly unusable is a major issue.

Siftware update cant fix hardware defect.. And this problem is not only common in xperia devices but also in micromax devices.. I dont know how can people say a softwarw update can fix this.. And I can bet this problem will get worse day by day.. I have already faced same issue in a micromax canvas 3D and the screen got unusable within 3 months..

weird mine works perfectly, i got AUO panel.. may i know whats yours?
For those which dont have this problem, have you got a screenprotector on it? If so, is it the one out the box or a third party one?
I haven't put a screen protector on mine, just wondering if that would somehow help.

Try activating Pointer Location in Developer Options
I have tried activating Pointer Location in Developer Options since I also sense some sort of problem with screen input like touch being jumpy at times.
When swiping with two fingers, everything seems fine as long as they are far enough. If my two fingers are very close and swipe the screen most of the time, one finger's Pointer Location would break at some point and continue. Can anyone confirm if this is normal? Would like to have a screenshot of this but Pointer track would be lost.
I have an AUO screen by the way, Thanks guys!
So I've had a little test tonight.
Tried finding what screen type I have but it complained about permissions when trying to access the file, it's been mentioned on another thread that access to this was locked on some update. So no idea which panel I have.
Anyway, used PC Companion to Repair the Phone and go back to factory settings. Build number showing as 14.3.A.0.757. Android version 4.4.2.
Ran an update but it says it's already the latest.
With a naked screen (except for the factory fitted anti-shatter film) ran through the touchscreen diagnostic multiple times, and nearly every other test I had a missing part of a swipe.
I put the temporary protective film back on (which came on it already with the little pull tab on the corner, the one that's not fully see-through) and ran through the diagnostic test, and this time I couldn't get a swipe to miss. They were all good!
Took the temporary film off, tried again and it missed bits again. Temporary film back on, re-tests and no missing bits. This may just be a crazy coincidence, but it looks like having a screen protector on fixes this. If you have this problem, give it a try. If it's still problematic, maybe try another screen protector or if you still have that temporary one try the tests a few times with that on.
I've had touchscreen issues for some time now, even with a screen protector on. But since I flashed doomlord's kernel some days ago, everything is fine. I don't know if there are even changes compared to the original kernel, but for me, it worked. Swiping this posting would have been impossible before.

I had the exact issue as the op but since upgrading from firmware 681 to 757, the issue has been resolved. It also resolved the sound bug which I only got occasionally.

Yeah it happens to my z1 compact also, even some.times when phone is not heated up. Just lock and unlock.your phone and problem is gone.
Come back to 4.4.2. (757). My compact is same. lastest rom some time have this issue.
Do you have any cover in use and if so, is it magnetic?
Try without cover.
guys , i don't have it no more i was frustrated and sold it very cheap , same with the big z1
now i plan to get s4 or s3 lte, but i am afraid of lag
it's sad that people don't talk much about the touch screen and ignore it, z1 and z1c are very fast phones, faster than galaxy s5 but it's disappointing that the screen is faulty
patoberli, both phones, don't have the asf, after removing it, screen went more crazy, and i had to put another screen protector to minimize the effect
my friend with z3c have similar problem too
just noticed screen issues when unlocking the phone while it's on the table. touch gets all crazy. this doesn't happen when i'm holding it though.
