My next door neighbor learned that I like to mess with things. He has brought me a Galaxy Note 2 and has asked me to install cynaogen on it. However it appears that this thing already has a custom rom on it. That being said I would like to start from scratch. Well from what I have read I need to download a stock rom and upload it with odin using the download menu. To access this I am suppose to power down the phone and then hold the power, volume down, and home button. However instead on the download mode this brings me to the recovery mode. So what can I do to access the download mode?

If you haven't wiped/factory reset the phone, most probably you can boot into the android system and perhaps access download mode from the power menu.Almost all roms have that feature under "reboot" options.Usually download mode always works ,never seen anyone saying download mode is not accessible it's usually the recovery that could not be accessed. How I access download mode I press vol down then home and then lastly i press power button.

When I press this button combination it brings to a factory mode. The writing is in Japanese or something of the sort.

That doesn't look like note II battery ,perhaps you should ask your neighbor which model is it? May be it's the Korean variant but that one should be still 3100 mah not 2800 mah and the stock samsung battery is black and grey not blue.Perhaps you shouldn't even try to do anything with it and just return it to him.
Even Samsung Logo is missing below the ear piece, perhaps some alien model.
I think it's a pirated version of the note lol. Probably chinese. If you could take a better photo I can interpret for you

I dont even know such a phone existed, not sure you can flash any GT N7100 ROMS on it so without risking it further just return it to it's owner.

I think I can use a little help.
I tried to update my SGS from I9000XXJF3 to I9000XXJF7.
I followed the steps with Odin etc etc....bu now my device does not reboot anymore! It only shows a white screen with blue letters "AT&T WORLD PHONE".
I can not get the device in download mode or recovery mode anymore. When I'm pushing volume down + home + on/off button, it shows the same white screen.
What can I do now? I hope I didn't brick the device....
Can't even get into the menus to flash? Wow.. I don't think you can fix that.
Nope... this sucks big time! Pff I cant stand it anymore...i go to take a sleep now. Tomorrow i try again, but i dont feel like it is going to work!
I tried everything, volume up + home + on/off button = White screen
volume down + home + on/off button = White screen..

AT&T...
Mate, did you flash Captivate with I9000 firmware? They are, kind of, like 2 different phones...
You can use I9000 firmware, but only if you use standard modem file (that from what I briefly read, I can be completely wrong).

Did you remove the battery and force a fresh boot into download mode?
And yeah. Are you sure you don't have a captivate and not a SGS i9000?
Remove the battery which might force a reset of the device.
Once you put the battery back in see if you can get into Download Mode again then go through the reflash firmware again. Make sure your using the correct files.

Beat me to it.
I have the same problem, I tried to get the phone into download or recovery mode, but no success, it switches between AT&T white screen and black screen all the time...I'm trying since last night, this is frustrating...
Yes, exactly the same problem with my i9000. When I try to enter in donwnload mode I have a white screen with a blue text "AT&T world phone" and it is blincking.
Can't enter in download mode, can't flash new ROM witk Kies......I can do nothing...
Can anyone help me please? There is any chance to recover my phone back?
Thank you very much.

Yes, after hours and hours of studing the problem I can confirm:
By mistake, I was using Odin for Captivate , on trying to bring back to life my i9000.
Now, what can I do? There is any chance to get the phone in to the download mode?
Thank you very much for your time and patience...
OK you used the wrong ODIN version... but I thought ODIN doesn't touch the bootloader? So if this is also correct for the captivate version of ODIN, I think there is still hope.
Maybe you can find something useful in the captivate forum.

Download the correct ODIN, PIT and Firmware. Set them up on your computer.
Remove the battery, SIM and SDCard from your phone. Wait a few seconds.
Re-insert your Battery only.
Put the phone into Download Mode - volume down + home + on/off button
You might need to try this a few times I don't always get it first time.
Connect the phone to your computer by USB and confirm ODIN see's it.
Then flash the firmware again.
Wait for reboot then switch off and re-insert your SIM, SDCard.
Should be right now. Fingers crossed for you.

yes i did, but the problem is that where i live there is no AT&T which their logo is flashing onto my phone screen.
they might shoot me in the head.
I made this short video to show the problem

Yes, this is our problem.
Our mistake is that we don't look for correct Odin3 flash tool, and we used Odin3 for Captivate.
I have try in Captivate topic maybe find something usefull, but nothing. They us a light different method to get in download mode, but it doesn't work on my phone.
Always I get the same white screen.
I really don't know if the battery is charging in this white screen.
I recieved my phone back from repair from Samsung and they loaded the latest OS that was avail. I no longer have the menu that would pop up on a long hold of the power button that allowed you to place the phone into flight mode and others.. What is this called and how do i get it back?

I would flash a ROM that has those features, I think they are called 4 in 1 reboot menu or some other variant other than 4. Most custom ROMs offer this so go ahead and find which one you prefer.

I understand that but i was hopeing for a stock solution as I have seemed to be an expert at not following directions I have brick my current Galaxy II once and my previous Galaxy 3 times.. This all happens when i try to return to stock firmware. So I'm at a point where i'm tired of ruining hardware because I fail to read correctly or something.
I've realized that rooting/ custom ROM's are not for me..
Hello to all the xda pros had recently bought an s3 so happy that i had finally got it and wasted no time in rooting using causal worked great then i made the biggest mistake ever i didn't flash a recovery or different rom. Could not choose to many new and cool looking roms. Had got called in to work early and left my new phone at home another mistake. My lovely wife found it and seen att send a update notification thinking this is what i wanted since it was all i could talk about she took the 4.3 update!!! I cant really blame her because she knows nothing about rooting or flashing roms she thought she was helping but now am left with a messy slow laggy phone. I tried to reroot using casual again and it looked like it was working but after it reboot it was running even slower in "safe mode" and supersu says that i have to reroot manually after 4.3. Have tried to root via odin but phone wont go in to download mode no matter how many time i try it always ends up booting in to "safe mode" the only thing i am doing in adding to the custom binary download counter am up to 3 and the warrant counter is at 1. Any advice from the pros would love nothing more to return to custom rom tw 4.3 is acting alot like ios 7.

To disable Safe Mode
1. Press and hold the Power button
2. Select Restart
3. Select OK
Then if you in normal mode try get to download mode. Volume down + Home Button and Power button. Hold all anthill you see Warning screen then press Volume Up.
If Safe Mode continues to display on the Home Screen after restarting the device and a Factory Reset does not resolve the problem, it may be due to a faulty Home button which would be considered damaged hardware.

If other method not gone work you can try to get off safe mode by :
Go to Settings
1.Select Apps->All (Look for ALL on top menu or swipe to the right to get to ALL)
2.Select Google Services Framework and tap Clear Data.
3.Turn off (shut down) your phone and turn it back on.
See if the phone will be out of Safe Mode.
I don't think you can get to download mode longest you are in safe mode.
So I just tried to flash 4.4 on my P605 (file being P605XXUCNE2_P605OXACNE2_NEE.zip).
Sadly, I forgot to tick 'phone bootloader update' in Odin, soooo....now I'm stuck on the Samsung logo with 'Recovery booting' written in blue on the top left edge.
I've searched the Net for a solution, but all the ones I've found require me to remove my battery, which is kinda impossible on the P605 without hardware modifications.
I really need some help here, as I'm sure there is another way to get to Download Mode.

Flash stock JB rom,let it reboot then Flash Kitkat rom after... Flash TWRP 2.7.0.1 and let reboot, go into recovery, now should be TWRP, flash latest supersu.zip file(1.99r3). Now Kitkat, rooted and custom recovery.
If you don't want root and TWRP, skip those steps...
Just be aware you will have difficulty accessing external sd card with any but stock file manager and not all 3rd party apps will be allowed to use it (unless rooted)...

What does a screen cycle mean exactly? Sorry if the question is dumb.
Edit: Just got into d/l mode.
I did that by holding Vol- and power. It restarted a couple of times but in the end it got there. Thanks for all the help.
Try Power + Volume Down + Home instead of just Power + Volume Down, there is a different if you are stuck.
My home button has not worked in about six months due to water damage. So how do I manage to get into download or recovery mode when my phone is stuck in a boot loop without the use of a home button? It won't load into android and I can't get adb to force it to load into download mode.
select Bootloader from the reboot menu in recovery if you have custom.
if not, idk but honestly I've always been able to get to it with just power and volume down on Sprint devices...

Thank you. I guess at this point the phone is just borked. I have TWRP on the phone but it will not let me get into either recovery or download mode. I already purchased a S5. At this point I'd just like to get into the Note so I can factory reset it and sell it for parts.

again, most Sprint devices do not require the use of Home in the button combination.
my old s2 and s4 did not, note 4 does not, but I don't know about with the s3 s5 s6
my wifi-only G note 10.1 2014 & note pro 12.2 do not require Home
some other **non-sprint** s4's, s5's, note 3's that I've handled but not owned in the past I did notice requires Home
when people post the instructions on the forum they probably just say to hold home anyways, to reduce/eliminate the "it's not working!" complaints or have come from a different carrier and haven't yet realized Home is not necessary.
if your note 4 is in fact Sprint, and neither Download mode, Recovery mode, or OS will boot, then the issue you are experiencing is far more severe than a faulty button. it might be the result of flashing a rom designed for a different carrier's version of a note 4 (via odin?)
btw is typically easier to get into either mode when USB cables are not connected -- the power off charging mode can be a minor nuisance when trying to do the correct order
I appreciate everyone's input. I really do. Holding down up or down and power without the home button does not work for me. Perhaps it was just time for the phone to stop working. I got about 5 months out of it after falling in the water. I was doing the 5.1.1 update from freeza from here. Along the way it broke. I'm no rookie at flashing, as I've been doing it since the Samsung Moment was out. Oh well, you live and learn. Thank you again.
