My home button has not worked in about six months due to water damage. So how do I manage to get into download or recovery mode when my phone is stuck in a boot loop without the use of a home button? It won't load into android and I can't get adb to force it to load into download mode.
select Bootloader from the reboot menu in recovery if you have custom.
if not, idk but honestly I've always been able to get to it with just power and volume down on Sprint devices...

Thank you. I guess at this point the phone is just borked. I have TWRP on the phone but it will not let me get into either recovery or download mode. I already purchased a S5. At this point I'd just like to get into the Note so I can factory reset it and sell it for parts.

I'm pretty sure there are apps on the play store that will let you reboot into recovery, but you might need to have a rooted phone for them to work.

I normally use titanium to boot into recovery. Problem is that the phone is stuck into a boot loop so i can get into the OS.

again, most Sprint devices do not require the use of Home in the button combination.
my old s2 and s4 did not, note 4 does not, but I don't know about with the s3 s5 s6
my wifi-only G note 10.1 2014 & note pro 12.2 do not require Home
some other **non-sprint** s4's, s5's, note 3's that I've handled but not owned in the past I did notice requires Home
when people post the instructions on the forum they probably just say to hold home anyways, to reduce/eliminate the "it's not working!" complaints or have come from a different carrier and haven't yet realized Home is not necessary.
if your note 4 is in fact Sprint, and neither Download mode, Recovery mode, or OS will boot, then the issue you are experiencing is far more severe than a faulty button. it might be the result of flashing a rom designed for a different carrier's version of a note 4 (via odin?)
btw is typically easier to get into either mode when USB cables are not connected -- the power off charging mode can be a minor nuisance when trying to do the correct order
I appreciate everyone's input. I really do. Holding down up or down and power without the home button does not work for me. Perhaps it was just time for the phone to stop working. I got about 5 months out of it after falling in the water. I was doing the 5.1.1 update from freeza from here. Along the way it broke. I'm no rookie at flashing, as I've been doing it since the Samsung Moment was out. Oh well, you live and learn. Thank you again.

I just did the regedit trick and downloaded the froyo update but when i go into the phone i just keep getting error messages about launcher not loading etc.
I have factory resent and cleaned cache but still wont work. I cant download the old updates through kies any more how do i get it back to how it was with the old software? I am stuck and freaking out lol
guess you have to flash an older FW like JM2 with Odin ... check out FAQ in this section (sticky).
I really stuffed it up now i somehow flashed a captivate rom onto it from atnt and now it wont even go past the white screen. I cant use the 3 buttons to get it into recovery mode or download mode. And the computer is not recognising the phone. Have i stuffed it for good?
try volume up + volume down + power
the AT&T / Tmobile version uses that combination
instead of Volume down + home + power
Go into recovery mode and factory wipe if you have issues such as services force quitting.

Captive rom onto Galaxy phone? Curious how did you do that as these two are two different phone. You are not the first one but reading from the posts from people who did the same mistake, I'd say you have bricked it. Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news
i have
I have tried all combinations of keys and it just keeps loading up with white att international phone and then that screen just flashes every few seconds and doesnt go any futher. It wont go into downloadin or recovery.
im thinking of doing the update
did you do anything eles besides the update to cause this
Look, the only possible way to brick the phone (that i know of) is to flash others phone rom(Captivate being the usual suspect) into Galaxy.
This changed the button combo to enter download mode in Galaxy (as Captivate has different combo for download mode) so it is not possible to enter the download mode and reflash. Therefore you are stuck and cant do nothing Im afraid
Just curious , why so many people flashing Samsung Captivate rom into their Galaxy?

Since it is the same Galaxy S i9000, I'd say It'll work. But I could be wrong To be on the safe side, you could ask for other Bell Galaxy users' feedback. Dont know about Bell, but Romanian Orange users are getting their phone locked after the flash.
usualy when something wrong w/0 3 buttons
usualy when something wrong w/0 3 buttons the phone rebooting in recovery mode itself to reboot it in download mode install correct adb drivers and use command "adb reboot download"
decided
I have just decided i am going to take it to one of the local Samsung repair centres i explained it over the phone and they said they could fix it for $49.95 or they could try and push for warantee but i told them i would just pay it will take longer for them to apply for warantee get rejected and then i pay anyways.
I miss it already i had to go back to my nokia N95 which was from a few phones ago now lol
i think the benfiets can wait till the official release ryanza lagfix fix all the lag problems that i had how important is flash really use your computer
Please explain exactly where you got the rom from so we don't make a similar mistake.
I'd pay the 50 too instead of waiting weeks and weeks :\
I got
I got the original rom through samsung kies using the reg edit trick that was shown in one of the threads. After a factory reset and a cleared cache it loaded up but started coming up with all these pop ups that things wont load and need to be forced shut etc.
So i decided to just flash it back using Odin but at 12 at night and in a panicy state thinking i have stuffed my phone for good i clicked on a captivate rom without looking at the heading of the thread that a link took me to for the galaxy s.
But as i said before for 49.95 to get it fixed is easier then me trying all these other things and getting in more of a panic about doing worse things to it. I assume it will be easy for them to fix it. A friend said he had a nokia he bricked where USB wasnt connecting and the screen wouldnt come on etc and they just used a computer that does something and fixes it.
got
Just got the phone call they managed to fix my galaxy for $49 and getting it back tomorrow oh how i have missed it i had to go back to a old old phone the nokia 95 lol.
Continuing my quest for confirming an unlocked/locked bootloader, I have stumbled across a key combo for getting into download mode! When the phone is off, hold the volume up button and plug in the micro usb cable, the phone should then boot up (on its own, do not touch the power button) to a screen with a grey box with a down arrow that says download mode. For anyone that used to own a Samsung Galaxy S phone, this mode was the primary mode for flashing roms via Odin and Heimdall. Now we just need a recovery rom and flashing software (possibly [AIO] ROMTools, I will fiddle around with it tonight).
Confirmed on Bell Optimus LTE, unit must be off, hold up while plugging in USB cord.

This is great news! I've been needing to re-flash the stock ROM since day one (when I hosed my root with a bad busybox)...
Very nice find... I had been able to get into download mode before, but I didn't realize it was the usb connection that allowed it.
If you look in some of the other threads you will see that I have been able to locate the boot and recovery partitions - just 'standard' emmc partitions. I have pulled the data off the device and unpacked them so that I am able to look at the data within the partitions. Next is to start to understand what is inside the files - mainly init.rc and the other .rc files.
Currently I think part of the lack of recovery for us has to do with a line in init.rc:
service adbd /sbin/adbd recovery
disabled
Something tells me this will disable the recovery capabilities for the phone... but still looking around to figure it out. Will keep everyone posted.
Please do! Sounds like we are making progress as a whole!
great news guys!
thx 4 ur hard work!
hope ur next good news~
Wonderful news we are getting this past week!! Much progress has been done I'm getting so excited at where all this will lead us to Glad to be part of a sub-forum with tons of fiery passion and dedication. I'm not much of a help since I'm not good with any of these things, but I'll contribute in any way possible
Just got this phone for Christmas, but they were out of stock at 2 nearest stores to me. Have to wait a day or 2 for it to be shipped alas.
If you set it so that start adbd in recovery is enabled, what happens when you use ROM Manager to boot into recovery? I tried booting into recovery without editing the init.rc and I got a little Android guy with an open box and an arrow coming out for a sec, but then it kicked me out by rebooting.

Good luck and God Speed Sir!! Bring home the bacon!
So has anyone figured out what we can use this mode for?
If it means anything, that was the mode I had it in while I flashed the SU640 rom.
Good to know, I figured it was the mode that the LG tool used to flash the phone.
So I was rockin' my 4.1 rom earlier and listening to music when my headphone cord got stuck on my chair and my phone fell off my desk to the ground. Everything was still going but my touch screen stopped working. I hit the unlock (power) button and it would show the correct unlock screen but I could not slide to unlock.
I pulled the battery and ever since then my phone would not boot. Stuck in boot loops, etc. I tried restoring from Nandroid (even back to my 4.0.4 image) and it would get stuck on unable to load /data at the end. I eventually went back and installed Nexus Toolkit 7.0 on my home pc and proceeded to load the stock 4.0.2 back on and root. However, it still is stuck in a boot loop. I'm now at a loss of what to do. My sd card has already been wiped and my phone is still not booting.
I'm at your mercy if anyone can give me any direction - please!

Try restoring using ODIN
the process wipes all data, but since you said its already wiped that shouldnt be a problem for you.
IF it still doesnt work, then it isnt software, but rather hardware, and you should probably go get that fixed

Yes you can still use ODIN,
as ODIN is software for samsung phones,
just make sure you use the zerizon file ratehr than the sprint..
or there could be dragons ahead
but there will always be a way to return to stock
Although, i would use this, because it is mostly aimed towards Verizon Users..

Sorry for assuming you had sprint..
I dont know what was going on in my head

I did flash lock it with ODIN... so the unlock icon does not show. It boots to the animation and then restarts after it shows for 5 seconds. I think the touch screen is malfunctioning and causing it to reboot.
Can you turn it off and then turn it on while holding volume down and up at the same time (i.e., can you boot into fastboot/bootloader?)
If so... it's not over yet.
However, if you dropped it it's probably hardware. But if you can get into the bootloader, at least you can lock it before bringing it in.
looks like your nand chip failed. had the same problem with my S2 and even a JTAG didnt fix it, had to send it to warranty to have the board replaced

Sounds like you softbricked it. Here's how to fix that (note the tablet MUST BE plugged into a PC to fix this) :
mitchellvii said:
If you have flashed a rom and your tablet "soft bricks", i.e. it gets stuck at the Samsung splash screen or boot loops Recovery there is an easy way to recover without having to reflash the original firmware in ODIN (assuming you were smart and made a NANDROID backup before flashing your rom).
TURNING THE DARNED THING OFF:
Here's the problem. If you are at the Samsung splash screen or boot looping Recovery, you cannot turn your tablet off by just pressing the power button and you can't pull the battery. This prevents you from getting back into Recovery and restoring your NANDROID backup. So here is what you do:
1) Plug your tablet into your computer (this is important!).
2) Hold down the home, volume down and power buttons until you boot into download mode. Once you are prompted, push the volume up button to enter download mode completely.
3) Now, once in download mode, hold down the power and volume down buttons (not the home button this time) until you screen goes blank (your tablet MUST be plugged into your computer for this to work!). Release the buttons and you will see the battery symbol on your screen. Your tablet is now off - thank god.
4) To enter Recovery mode, hold the home, volume up and power buttons down until Recovery loads.
5) Restore your NANDROID backup.
Disaster averted.

I would recommend redownloading a stock ROM and flashing that using Odin. Good luck!
Stock roms are country specific. If you bought the device in China, you to have to install the Chinese version or else you will always be in a bricked loop state.

Any idea where to find USA specific stock firmware? I've looked on Samsungupdate.com and sammobile.com with no luck.
Everytime it's the same:
people are experimenting with their expensive tablet/phone without knowing what the consequences are!
And then, when the experiment fails, they don't know what todo and other people may come with solutions!

Good point. I'm a flashaholic with my phone but intended to leave my T805 unrooted. However, I couldn't accept the SD card limitations and not being able to choose which apps to have on my tablet. It should be my choice not Samsung's and this might be causing people to try rooting without the necessary knowledge. Rant over.

Samsung is nothing to blame in this: Google is!
I just got a Tab S 8.4 used on ebay.
I like the tab but lots of apps I use are not lollipop compatible even when side loaded.
I want to revert this Tab S 8.4 from lollipop to the stock samsung kitkat. (32gb Titanium, USA,. wifi only version)
I just found this link with instructions:
http://samsung-firmware.org/download/Galaxy Tab S 8.4 (WiFi)/5432/XAR/T700XXU1ANL2/T700XAR1ANL2/
Can I just download that and follow the instructions to get back to kitkat without any issue or tripping knox?
thanks.
Use this link: https://mega.nz/#!AYsCFaiY!aOJs57p3EV0HYzDYUxkE0QTgfW2ztCTzUYhtBKhhTZM
That is my own personal upload to Mega. It will probably be a faster download and I know it's safe.
Steps:
1. Place tablet in download mode (Turn tablet off, press and hold POWER, HOME, and VOLUME DOWN until you come to a warning screen. Click VOLUME UP to continue to download mode.)
2. Download zip file
3. Extract the file
4. Open Odin
5. Select AP
6. Select the file you just extracted
7. Click start
I've used these steps without issue. As far as KNOX is concerned, it is my understanding that flashing a custom ROM is what trips it and not stock firmware. I could be wrong on the KNOX issues.
thanks! it is a slow download.... yours is much quicker.
Any particular version of Odin to download? (3.10.6 work? or Samsung Odin 3.09?)
so installing this OVER the lollipop stock firmware I have...very little chance of bricking following the instructions if all goes well right?
I'm not new to flashing just want to make sure as I have heard someone say a samsung rep said you can't downgrade
Thanks very much!
I'm surprised at what you say, I haven't had a single issue with any app being incompatible with lollipop.
These must be pretty outdated apps.
3 of note:
simply note: you can't access it's menu system. (yes it is old, but it works the way I like just fine in kitkat)
xfinity tv go: no audio, freezes, crashes
Both Go Launcher HD & EX do weird things...unuseable.
The latest versions can't be setup the way I prefer and had on previous tablet or phone running kitkat.
all 3 run perfect in kitkat
Now granted all but the xfinity are old, but they work/config the way I want them to be.
I'd rather just have it the way I want then compromise if it all possible.

Version 3.10.6 is the version I use so you should be fine there. I have the same model as you, but mine is 16GB instead of 32. I seriously doubt that would make any difference. Yes, flashing over Lollipop is what I did. Ran into no issues whatsoever!
ok I did that and now it just boots to the samsung logo then holds there.
Tried turning off, won't do it.
held down vol power and home and it goes back into download mode.
I tried to flash again it does it successfully and reboots (just like first time) and it just freezes at samsung boot logo.
before that comes up it does show the green droid for a moment.
any ideas?

Yea, I was freaking out when I first did that. I figured at that point it wouldn't hurt to give everything else a try. Enjoy your KitKat! I noticed that the colors seems to be more vivid with KitKat than Lollipop as well. That's one reason I went back.
