Help with reverting back to stock - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

so i have a rooted at&T galaxy s3 on the latest stock firmware which i guess is 4.3. i tried flashing resurrection rom which was kit kat and it failed. so i restored my back up and the phone would get stuck on the splash screen. so i formated the whole phone and forgot to save my backup to my sdcard. twrp now says that i have no OS installed and also says i am not rooted anymore. im scared and need a little assistance. i just want to get it going.

Just flash the latest TWRP, copy a custom ROM to your phone, boot into TWRP, and flash it.

i bought a micro sc card reader and transfered a superuser zip and an old 4.3 beanstalk rom. it flashed fine last night. i used my phone all day and downloaded the latest 4.3 beanstalk rom and just tried to flash it and it FAILED. This is the second time i had a flash fail. I tried flashing that old beanstalk rom again and it failed too! what the heck???? my battery is a little low.....does twrp have some kind of safety built in where it wont flash if bettery is low?

ok...so i flashed cwm because im more familiar it than twrp. then i flashed an old slimbean 4.3 rom i had. everything worked fine and the phone booted up perfectly. i dont want slim bean so i rebooted into cwm and tried to flash the newest 4.3 beanstalk rom and it failed.....why?

no its not based on kitkat. i flashed an older version of cwm via odin. i figured i could just update it with rom manager. i tried to update cwm to the latest verion and it fails everytime. so...i downloaded root checker from the play store and it says im not rooted. i need to fix this lol

im running a custom rom but yet root checker says its not rooted...hmm

Flash the latest Philz and. Validus as I know that is a rooted ROM. Personally, I don't use ROM manager.

I'm on slimbean 4.3 and I've lost root. I want root back so I can get rid of this ROM. Ive flashed supersu multiple times with cwm..but I still do not have root access.

So I guess my question now is.....how do I get back to stock rooted? Im on slimbean 4.3 without root access.

Rooting is not needed to flash another ROM. Just boot into recovery, wipe, and flash another ROM.

There is no stock ATT 4.3 ROM because ATT only released 4.3 as an OTA update. Do not flash any 4.3 firmware (even from sammmobile.com) unless it has been compiled for installation via Odin. Check the development threads for firmware that can be flashed via Odin.

Samsung Galaxy Ace II Downgrade

Hello All,
I have Samsung Galaxy Ace II. First, I have upgraded my phone to 4.1.2 jb. Then secondly, I upgraded my phone to 4.3. Now it's version is 4.4.2 kitkat. But, I see now it's really slower then 4.3. It's completely driving me crazy. And I don't know how to downgrade my phone to 4.3. I have tried lots of things but couldn't handle it. I would be really appriciated if someone can help me about downgrading 4.4.2 to 4.3.
Thank you all,
Can.
Most easy and safe way is to flash stock 3 part, 4.1.2 firm. After that flash what you want with cwm.

Use ODIN to flash the stock rom and then you can flash the 4.3 rom you want with a temp. CWM
good luck
next time, when you want to go back to kit kat again, make sure you already backup your previous non kit kat rom (either CM 10 -10.2 or JB stock) via CWM so that you can return to your previous rom from kit kat. I use this method and succesful
I'm going to sell this phone so i need to get back to stock gingerbread. Can i flash it with Odin directly from 4.4.2 maclaw kitkat that i'm on now?
Also this will unroot my phone after installing gb, right? And then the only thing left to do is reset the flash counter so the warranty is still valid.

(I'm having a similar issue, "assert failed" error when trying to flash canjica's cm10.1 & 10.2 or aosp4.2.2. Running maclaw cm, cwm 6.0.4.5)
That is normal recovery that comes with cm 11.

Flash stock rom - Keep Root & CWM

Hello, I am currently rooted and have CWM 6.0.4.3. installed. I'm on CM11 but want to go back to stock.. Is there an easy way to keep root and go back to stock. Want stock for a few functions that ROMS dont seem to be offering but can keep root and CWM ??
Thanks.
Which phone do you have? You could try flashing a pre-rooted stock ROM via Odin. Then use Odin to flash CWM.
Bt its better to firstly install ur stock rom and then again root it as it takes no longer than 5 mins

Ok perfect, thats what I was looking for. Phone btw is S3 - d2att - SGH i747) Sounds good to install the stock rom and re-root.. I'm sure its here but I have searched everywhere to find a tutorial on this and I cannot find a straight answer.
Would you mind giving me the steps or pointing me to a thread that explains how to and has the files in need to download ?

Maybe you could just answer the bigger question : the reason I want to go back to stock is I need to use MHL/HDMI which CM11 doesnt support. I dont want to go back to stock, I would rather even go to another ROM that supports mhl/hdmi.. but if I have to go to stock, than so be it.?

Since you installed a custom recovery, that would have tripped the Knox counter which voids the warranty. It's not a problem if the phone is working properly.
Did you update to 4.3 or did it come with 4.3?
You may be better off installing a pre-rooted ROM.

It was quite some time ago but I believe I was on ICS 4.0.. and switch to CM from there. Im not worried about the counter for warranty, that's expired on my unit anyways. I just want to be able to use MHL/HDMI function.. so if fine with flashing pre-rooted.. or stock.. or a different ROM that support MHL/HDMI. Can you recommend the easiest route ?

I asked about 4.3 because the 4.3 bootloader cannot be downloaded. Flashing via mobile Odin will not touch the bootloader or modem.
You could try a pre-rooted rom and then flash a custom recovery via Odin.
I use Philz Touch from here: http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2att

Ok thanks, I will do that. 1 thing I'm not quite sure of is the bootloader situation ? In the first tutorial there is a note : Flashing a prior bootloader can hard/soft brick your device. How do I know ?
I see the steps as:
Extract tar file you downloaded.
Use Odin, put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the tar file
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and when done let phone reboot.
If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc. then you can stop HERE.
For my situation, is it just that easy ?
Before flashing, verify the version of your bootloader.

Hey. I got the i747m. As for what was the last stock ROM I had, can't say. I know when I bought the phone it was ICS and I had received and update to jellybean.. But them went to cm10. If you are sure you have the Rogers i747m and you have never loaded a stock Rogers 4.3 ROM onto your phone, you could use desktop Odin to flash a pre-rooted 4.1.2 ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426.
Flashing the pre-rooted 4.1.2 ROM will return the phone to completely stock, wipe out all installed apps and data, and you will have root. I do not recommend flashing the Rogers 4.3 pre-rooted ROM from the link.
Once you are able to boot into the phone and set things up, you can flash Philz Touch from Odin which will give you a custom recovery on a rooted stock 4.1.2 ROM.

You can't restore to a completely stock ROM not that you have a 4.3 bootloader. AT&T never released a full 4.3 stock ROM, only an update to 4.3 from an earlier stock ROM.
If you did not have a 4.3 bootloader, you could install any stock AT&T ROM such as 4.1.1. Being able to restore to stock 4.1.1 would also allow you to sim unlock your phone for free, if necessary.

Your original post said you have an sgh-i747 which is an AT&T model. If you have a Rogers s3, it's an sgh-i747m.
Regardless of which model you have, you can't downgrade from any 4.3 bootloader which means you can't completely revert back to 4.1.1. The best you could do would be to run 4.1.1 on a 4.3 bootloader.

It is a 4.4.2-based rom. The release is version 4.3.
hmm interesting...you do recommend it? what great features does it come with?
I like it because it's a very stripped-down ROM, has a dark UI, and is AOSP-based.
It's not radically different from other ROMs but has exactly what I want. I run the same ROM on a Nexus 4 and Motorola Atrix HD.

Root not working properly and binary not updating

So I updated to stock 4.3(I747M) via Odin, then flashed TWRP with Odin, then Flashed a 4.4 ROM with TWRP.
The Super SU app is failing to update the binary. And it's not giving root access to apps. Does this have anything to do with the MK5 bootloader?
I can't seem to find a fix? If someone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great.
Thanks!
Try flashing a another ROM such a Validus or CM11 as ROMs are pre-rooted.
Also, I prefer Philz Touch over TWRP. Maybe the recovery program makes a difference?

Yeah I bricked my phone messing with bootloaders...used an SD boot image to get to download mode and odined stock 4.3. Odined twrp. Twrp flashed omni's latest build. Does omni not come prerooted? That doesn't make much sense. I'll try another ROM.
It should also be noted I tried rooting stock 4.3 but it really didn't like that at all.

Maybe the 4.3 bootloader is causing a problem?

Yeah, this whole thing is weird. I had the 4.3 bootloader (rooted at end of Dec 2013) and didn't have an issue. I went to Quantum ROM FWIW. Have you tried a full wipe (system, cache, dalvik, data) with a clean flash of the ROM?

Yes, there are a number of ways to root on ver. 4.3. First, you could try CF-Auto Root. Doesn't always work with this version but it's worked for several people. Secondly, you could flash custom recovery via Odin and then flash the pre-rooted and de-knoxed MJ2 ROM as long as you retain your MJB bootloader and modem. You can ensure this by flashing the MJB bootloader and modem at the same time. Thirdly, you could flash TWRP custom recovery (this method doesn't always work with CWM) via Odin. Then flash SuperSU zip via custom recovery. Download and install SuperSU from the Play Store. Run it and install the binary when prompted. The fourth and my preferred method is Safe Root. This option won't trip your warranty bit in case this matters and has worked for me all the time. You can check the SafeRoot download link and installation instructions via the thread below ...

I just rooted yesterday again (after being on stock 4.3 touchwiz for the longest time, what a disaster). I used the CF auto-root method as well. I downloaded + flashed TWRP recovery using odin, and was all set to install AOSP roms. You can use CWM if you want but a few devs recommend TWRP so that's what I have stuck with.

I'm using tasks aokp right now, he always provides stable and reliable releases. Quantum, SlimKat and LiquidSmooth are all ones I've enjoyed back in 4.2 days so I'm sure those are good as well
