Odd issue with s4mini - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Picked up an s4 mini a few months back, all has been well with it till now, I'm having aan issue where my menu button is illuminated but the back button isn't, and the menu button acts like its being held down when I press it quickly and thee phone almost freezes. The back button works randomly.
Here is the kicker, if I turn off the key illumination the buttons work fine, then with it on and the buttons act up.
Anyone else have this issue?
The phone is completely stock, ID warranty it but I cant find my original proof of purchase which the outlet said I needed for the warranty work

if your warranty is lost already then you could try to do a factory reset in the recovery and clear cache
if this doesn't work, try to reflash the stock rom and do a factory reset after it and clear cache after it too
If you need help at it, you can ask me.

I tried the reset in recovery, that ccompleted fine, no change, tried to clear the cache and all I get is an error and a reboot of the phone

Help wipe my g2--blank screen

Can someone help me wipe my phone from recovery b/c i cant see anything on the screen but i do know the phone works and responds to touch?
I just need someone who can tell me exactly where to scroll in recovery to get to the wipe data/cache option.
Any help is very much appreciated
Unfortunately it may not be possible to help you navigate blindly because Clockword Recovery has a feature that places the confirm option among 10 choices to prevent accidental clicks. But from repeated tries it seems to come up in the same spot for me, so hopefully it might work for you.
So I can suggest that once you boot into recovery (volume down + power) and do the following.
- Press volume down 3 times and press trackpad, very very gently. Sometimes it registers a single click as two if you hold it for too long.
- Press volume down 7 times and press trackpad to confirm.
If it you select one of the "No" options on the confirmation page it will spit you back out to the main menu. So you press volume down 3 times, trackpad, volume down 7 times, trackpad.
Are you sure wiping your cache will resolve the issue you are having? It sounds like a screen defect or perhaps a resolution issue? Have you messed with your build.prop? If it doesn't work you may need to do some additional work from adb shell.
Thanks for the reply. I will try this as soon as I get back from class. I think it's a screen defect because the phone was working perfectly fine and when I came back to my phone after 10 minutes all I saw was a blank screen with the backlight on. I haven't messe with the build.prop. I have messed with the LCD density a couple times but I don't think that's what cause this issue. I just wanna try to clear all data I have on the phone so I can try to exchange it at a tmobile store lol. I know it won't fix the screen issue.
Thanks for helping. I'll see if it works. I do remeber that confirming wipe data and cache would also be the 7th option repeatedly.
Can you get into Fastboot?

[Q] My home button has stopped working completely (help!)

When I plugged out the charger this morning and turned off the wifi my phone suddenly crashed and started to reboot. I put the phone in my pocket and didn't think much about it seeing as this is a very common problem for a lot of people and it usually happens to me once or twice a week.
One hour or so later I pick up the phone to check something on the web and then press the home button to get me back to the home screen. Nothing happens. I press it again. Nothing happens. I have to then press the back button a bunch of times in order to get back to the homescreen...
After testing this a bit more I realize that this behavior doesn't go away, it's permanent, the button just doesn't work any more, which in itself is odd for a software button... Not only that but my lockscreen is gone as well even though it's set to "drag" in the settings and the "minimalistic text" widget on my homescreen sometimes have trouble loading up...
Rebooting the phone does not help.
Does anyone know how to fix this or even know why this has happened?
(ps. the phone is a swedish yakjuxw)

I pulled out the battery and mashed the powerbutton for about a minute, but the problem is still there.

Nope, the device is stock.
I saw a dutch user on a dutch forum with the same issue. a Factory reset solved this for him... Not sure what caused it and it's a bummer if it happens to you but at least it worked for him.
Try using an app that puts your device in landscape mode and see if it works then ans when you switch back to portrait.

Thanks for the replies, but I did a factory reset and it solved the problem.
Had a similar issue when i just got the phone, systemui kept crashing and when i'd reboot none of the soft keys worked - had to wipe and factory reset as well!
Damn. This happened to me too, just spent forever getting stuff on my phone.
Well it looks like I'll be factory resetting...

Help me my back and menu buttons have stopped working.

I 've tried searching but theres nothing specific to this phone.
I have a N7100 - everything has been working fine with it - all of a sudden the menu and back keys no longer work.
they light up if the phone in locked and when you press the home key - but once unlocked don't do anything.
I haven't dropped it or splashed water on it or anything like that.
The last app I installed was a call recoreded one last night, and I tried uninstalling that but nothing.
I also did a factory reset via recovery - also nothing.
I called Phones 4 U and they said they need to send it off - is there anything else I can try?

Screen does not respond to touch

All of the sudden the screen of my new Nexus 7 does not respond to touch.
I was looking to my emails, then stopped using the tablet for 10 mins and, when I tried to use it again, the lock screen did not recognize my swipe motion. I then tried to reboot it: pressed the power button, touched the Power Off option and nothing, also here it did not register my touch.
I was able to enter into recovery mode (using power and volume keys) and perform a factory reset but that did not solve the problem.
I am stuck at the lock screen and I cannot unlock it.
Any suggestion?
Thanks!
i think its just a 4.3 software bug. i love the tablet but the new update isn't very good IMO. google needs to get this right.

Since it has to be new I'd recommend just trading it in for another if a reboot or reset didn't fix it. I'd hate to see a fellow get stuck with an unreliable device. It could be many things though such as a bad digitizer or loose LCD ribbon flex cable or just a software glitch. To check the flex cable you would have to disassemble the unit which of course could potentially cause problems when trading it in. I dropped a tab one time though and it Jared my charge flex cable loose and just reinserting it fixed it. Good luck

Any idea about how to fix the problem (factory reset did not work) other then sending it back for a replacement?
Wait for Google to release official image then return to stock to see if it fixes it.

I have a feeling it is a software problem. It was perfectly working and few minutes after it was not. Nothing, hardware-wise happened in the middle.
Software-wise, I noticed, on the top of the screen, the notification that a keyboard update was installed. Could have it broken something?
I thought a factory reset would have handled that possible problem but it did not.

Mi7chy,
thanks.
A question: I started reading this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796) to understand how to flash the factory image and I am worried I cannot perform step 1 of the Driver Installation section (I am unable to unlock the lock screen...).
Any suggestion?
Contemplating of returning this back for a replacement...
Thanks!

This might be a silly thought, but I had a similar issue once (with my S3, not my Note2), and it was because there was something sticky around/under the home button. So when I would do a single press, it would stick and think I did a long press, which would bring up the menu. In my case, I thought it was a software problem too but it turned out to be a hardware problem. To fix it, I turned it off, removed the battery, and disassembled until I had clear access to both sides of the home button. I did NOT remove the home button or the ribbon cable, but I did clean all areas on and around the home button with alcohol. Let it dry & put it back together & it worked like normal.
My kids are very sticky sometimes lol. I no longer let them play with my devices until their hands are free of any crud. I have no idea what it was they got on my button (or it could have been something from work since my phone was in my apron pocket)... but the point is it's very easy to get something sticky down in there and not realize it, and a good cleaning can go a long way
The buttons and softkeys are controlled by the firmware on the board and completely different from any ROM firmware you could flash. I think it is safe to say that it is 99.999999% likely a hardware fault.
In the unlikely event that it is that 0.0000001% chance, your best bet is to completely wipe /system, /data, /cache, and /dalvik, then Odin back to stock to see if that corrects it.
If it doesn't, I'd look at taking it to a repair UNLESS the place you got it from that refurbed it has a warranty on it.

I agree that it could be a rom that has the keys remapped, as that was my first thought (Hello DN3 lol, love me some DN3, but I chose against key remapping), however the OP said the home button was working as expected for a while, and then it started to display long-press behavior on every press. In that case, I'd recommend inspecting and/or cleaning the home button. It's unbelievably easy to get junk in those tiny crevices.
But yeah he could try wiping everything first and see if that fixes it. Wouldn't hurt.
