OK guys, Firstly apologies if I'm duplicating any threads, I haven't been on for some time so a little out of touch and also logged in on a mobile device... I'm looking to either unroot my phone, hide root or work around for apps. I've searched high and low and can't find a working method thus far.. I've always rooted my devices but it seems there are more and more apps unable to work on rooted devices. I've tried apps like hide my root etc and tried disabling SU in the app menu with no avail, I need more so Barclays banking but also sky go app working. I work as a response driver and can have periods at work with no events so rely on sky go to keep my brain at least semi functional. I completely forgot these wouldn't work on my phone after I rooted it yesterday. Can anyone offer a solution to get these apps to work either via somehow cloaking root, installing older APK or anything I'm open to all suggestions whether it's something direct with handset or via ADB... Or alternatively advise the easiest way to remove root. Bootloader unlocked via HTC Dev, PhilZ touch ClockworkMod Recovery, S-off via firewater. May also be worth mentioning I'm in UK
Your help is greatly appreciated

There is currently no way to get Sky Go working on a rooted phone. It's the one of the reasons why I don't root any more

I had this problem but with barclays, didnt realise sky go wouldnt work. You have to flash a unrooted recovery through TWRP.
EDIT: Try this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
Look for your software number in the about section at the bottom of settings, mine was something like 1.54.401.5. Im on o2 so i used the o2 one, so download depending on your carrier. Also the number doesn't have to be 100% the same, as long as the first 3 numbers match you're laughing. make sure you download an unrooted one though (pretty sure they all are) put it onto your sd card wipe the phone then install the unrooted rom. Make sure it goes in sdcard/twrp/backups/(modelnumber)
if youve made any other backups with twrp they'll be in there so you know you're in the right place.
Hope this helps. I soft bricked mine so this is how i got out of it.
I've never used the apps you mention but I've had success getting no-root apps running with exposed and root cloak.

My Evo is doing fine, but I was trying to help a friend root his yesterday and the Unrevoked 1-click apk didn't appear to be doing the trick. The only difference I can think of between our two phones is that I haven't downloaded the update that came this week. Has Sprint defeated this root method in the most recent patch?
Yes...they are up to UnrEVOked 3.

Right, this method requires you to use a PC though, right? I'm wondering if its still possible to root it using the unrevoked on-phone application, or has this been defeated? And if so, was the defeat in the most recent patch?
bump. I'm afraid the answer given is still a bit unclear to me. Can someone please clarify?
Make sure you are going to 'unrevoked.com/m' if you want to use it on your phone and avoid having to use the pc method. I forgot the /m when I first tried it and got pretty confused as well.

Yes, this is exactly what I did. The apk downloaded and installed, but didn't appear to gain root when I ran it. I ran it several times, but every time I attempted to run wifi tether, it would say that I wasn't root.
You can try downloading the Simple Root app from the development forum, Its only 4 clicks and its a legitimate full root. It does require the PC, but you seem to know how to use one of those as you got to this website.
Don't take shortcuts because your not sure what you're doing, learn

Thank you for the reply. I'll probably end up Simple Root for myself, but this is for a somewhat elderly friend of mine. He only needs root for wifi tether, since he can't get broadband where he lives (3g is okay). I figured the apk root method would be suitable for him since he would know how to uninstall it if he needed to claim is warranty or something. I won't be around to support his phone for him.
Anyway, thanks again. I'm still learning myself and appreciate the advice.
Ahh ok, he can always hit the wipe button and it will go back to a state good enough for the average sprint rep.
I Installed unrevoked 3by usb because i got last version 147.651.1. Its anyway to unroot and get back to stock rom. I tried different ways and nothing for example i wiped data, hard reset . etc.
Right now i dont have wifi is unable and that why i would like get back to stock. Also i use the method with htc sync and the ruu 132.651.1 andgive me error 171 then reintall the ruu give me error 140 and boot to the main screen/
Please any solution to get back to stock .
thanks in advanced,
Just came across this article while researching how to root my new HTC Desire (sweet phone!) ... is this still true and should I be concerned?
Also - has anyone got thoughts on the 'unrevoked' 'one-click-root'? - is it as safe as doing a more 'manual' method?
Well i have heard of several apps still storing passwords as plain text, so might still be a problem. This is also the case on unrooted phones though. The real problem here regarding root is, that apps, which you have given root access, can access those files which is normally available only to the actual app. So it is more a question of only allowing root to trusted apps, which you should always do anyways, as anything run with full access have the possibility to do major damage.
And regarding unrevoked, it should be as safe as rooting using pauls method, which only supports the old hboot versions by the way. There will always be a risk to it, but if you do everything right, it is very easy. The difference in the rooting methods is more the way they hack the recovery in order to let you flash unsigned or test-signed zip files. So just go with the latest unrevoked and make sure to install the drivers the right way first and you should be fine
Brilliant, thanks so much for the informative background, I will be rooting!
Read the OP too by Cory which has made me less worried - http://forum.androidcentral.com/hacking/35470-aware-clear-text-passwords-database-files.html
No problem I hope it helped you understanding.
Is this possible? I know most unroot the phone to take it in for service/exchange etc but my situation is different. I have to use Good for Enterprise to access my company's email and as you may know, Good does not allow rooted phones. So, I have no choice but to unroot my Evo.
The image that is used in unrooting is a stock ROM. What I want to do is setup my phone - the way I want it with Mikfroyo - with all the tweaks etc and then "just do the unrooting part". If that makes any sense - I don't need any superuser permissions etc.
Long story short - can a phone be unrooted with a custom ROM instead of a stock ROM?
im pretty sure this is impossible dude, sorry, just leave it all rooted, whats the problem
I know you can't unroot and keep a custom ROM but I wonder if there is a way to hide the fact that you're rooted from the app. What kind of message pops up when you install it?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
It just says that Good cannot run on a rooted phone and just locks the app - I have to call IT to get an unlock code using the device ID that is displayed in Good's pop-up message.
It has to be checking for something specific and I bet there is a way to fudge it but unfortunately that's outside my realm of understanding. I would ask one of the devs here about it.
What permissions does the App request when you install? It could just check for SuperUser

I which case you could either delete superuser or use it to block the app... perhaps?
I am sure its more complicated than that - if they are touting themselves as a replacement for blackberry security for iPhones and Android - I seriously doubt a simple fudging of the superuser permissions will deceive it. Also, I'd like to comply with my company's requirements for using an Android phone so I don't get into trouble.
So from what I understand - you cannot have a custom ROM on an unrooted phone. Thanks so much guys - I'll just have to learn to live with the bloated stockware and manual restores arghh......
It's not possible.... to unroot, you'd have to RUU, which returns the phone back to stock. And then, you'd have no way of flashing a custom rom unless you rooted again
ok this is one thing that I am starting to not understand here...
so many people when they answer - say "yes" it can be done or "no" it can not be done...
...ummm where is the why? It would be very informative to know such things or if someone has even tried said thing before.
like why can't you just run a ROM or other flash file from renaming the file and letting the stock loader do the flashing? ......answer: because the stock loader does a file signature check - see? that makes sense and answers the why. it also helps users to retain the information as well as understand it.
I would love to know why the OP can't just run the unrevoked s-on tool from here http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever#custom_splash (in the FAQ section) without removing his custom ROM and just make sure he doesn't use any apps that need the su access. sounds like it should work? has someone done this and found that it does not work? flashing back to s-on should just prevent flashing to any other ROM's I would think from everything I have read in this forum.
or once s-on is back does it also check the current ROM on the phone and would cause some issues? would be great information to know. because if the security only checks file signatures of flies to be flashed and not the current ROM it seems like the OP could do what he is wanting to.
well, just thought I would ask to see if I could gain some more understanding as to the mechanics of everything
It would be good to know if this works with Good for Enterprise. I am stuck on an SGS 2.1 with Telstra and want a non stock ROM but really need to use Good.

I did not know that, and that SUCKS. My company's piloting Good now, and I was really looking forward to it. This just infuriates me. Mobile device makers are getting away with things that desktop/laptop makers never dreamed of trying. We shouldn't even NEED to "root" a phone. Imagine if you needed to hack your Windows machine in order to get the admin password and be able to install whatever you want. Now yes, I get that companies often do add those restrictions on their devices, and that they need to protect their data. Allowing access to company data on a personal device might make it a little more of a gray area, but it still blows. Good should be able to develop a system that can be secure, even if you have root access.
Here's a thread I just found. It sounds like you can just delete su and the superuser.apk. I think you can keep the custom rom, but you probably wouldn't be able to run anything that needs root, like Wireless Tether, Titanium Backup, or whatever. But you could probably have a flashable zip to re-add them when you need them. Or maybe one of the temp root methods would work. But it makes me furious that this is needed.

My thoughts exactly
Update- I was able to get Good running finally on a custom rom - However, I had to forgo my superuser capabilities. I just renamed both the Su and Superuser.apk and then was able to run Good without any issues. I can easily restore Superuser access by adb when I need to. The good thing is that with the recovery being there, I can still flash updates without needing superuser access.
Thank you all for your help.

I am using Mikfroyo 4.5.
Just came across this thread and was seeing if your GFE was still working? I have a DX and put a custom ROM and could not get it to work. I'm waiting for my new PIN and have removed SU to see if it works.

I rooted my HTC Salsa to install apps2sd which is great, but what commands do i have to run and where to be able to rename su.apk ?
Thanks,

I know I saw a Z4 root app that worked with the evo can anyone point me in the correct direction?
Last time I rooted the Evo was back around launch when I nand unlocked my Evo. I am trying to do a simple root to load a rom for a buddy on his phone and cant seem to find anythig as simple as loading an apk and clicking a button like with z4. I used z4 on the droid x and on htc Hero with success and I thought I saw one that was for the Evo as well but I cant seem to find it.
Thanks, Thomas
All I want is to unlock the phone simply, so that I can load a rom. I can do everything else fine I just cant unlock this phone. I can use the original method because its been updated past that point and I dont want to add things to my computer to root.

There is no app that will give you permanent root on the Evo. If you run an app like Z4 or Visionary, it will give you temporary root access. You will lose root upon rebooting the phone. Therefore, you would not at all be able to flash any custom roms or anything, as you'd lose root as soon as you powered the phone down.
if you want to put a ROM on for him, you need a permanent root. There's no real way you can do that without 'adding things to your computer." There are a couple programs that will root you, that you run from your computer. one is Unrevoked (www.unrevoked.com) the other is called AutoRoot (by xHausx), which you can find in the development section. The other way is a manual method, using adb, and pushing files. It's also in the development section. The author of that thread is Zikronix. Any of those three methods will give you permanent root.
Hi all
Hope this is the correct area...
My hubby bought me a S20 plus for my birthday through a local dealer.
I noticed a few issues like not being able to use biometrics or install certain apps.
I've since found out the phone has been rooted.
I've tried to do a factory reset, but this hasn't helped.
I've downloaded root checker and it confirms the phone is rooted. I've downloaded SuperSU yet is won't work as ver 2.82 claims it's for an older Version of Android.
I've downloaded solid explorer to delete the root access files such as Busybox and SU however I cannot find these files in the system folder or the system/bin folder.
Can anyone advise on how I can unroot my phone? I am unable to install certain needed apps due to this.
Phone details below. Sorry am unable to upload pics.
UI Version = 1
Android Version = 10
Let me know if other info is needed.
I've even tried calling the Samsung Center and they are unable to assist...
Thanks all

You will need to get hold of the stock firmware from somewhere like Sammobile and flash back to stock using ODIN. There's tons of guides knocking about on here for the step by step. The damage is done though as far as any Knox related features go, it's like a fuse that blows when you root and you can never fix that.
Having said that, biometrics should have never been affected by rooting so that's a bit unusual. Flash stock and set up from scratch then go from there, could be faulty also
Thanks for the guidance Dave. I'll search the forums for the steps.
For clarity, when I say biometrics didn't work, it works allow me to record etc, but when I tried to enable it, like on my banking app, it wouldn't allow me. This is how I eventually figured out my phone was rooted. While I know the benefits of being rooted, a normal everyday user like myself, certainly won't benefit from it.
I've had a Samsung my entire life, and always saw the secured by knox logo... When you say damage has been done, does this mean that all my security in the device, such as my banking details etc, may be compromised?
Jees. I hope not. As this would really freak me out...
Ok so Finding the firmware wasn't to difficult. Sanmobile quite easy to navigate.
Just a query please... My phone base band version lists g985fxxu1atb2 however the closest I could find to this is G985FXXU1ATBM
Is this ok or does it have to be the exact same description?
Shoo. Lol. Really hope I'm going to be able to get this right **insert nervous smile emoticon here**

The last letters are the region/operator of the Rom. Not necessarily has to be the exact description, the really important are the first that indicate model number.
Ok. So have downloaded Odin and am busy downloading the flash firmware.
May I please be so bold as to ask someone on here to please share a link tot he step by step guide that I will need to follow in order to flash my phone back to the original boot thingie :silly::silly::silly:
I have tried to search but seem to only come up with a nexus thread with no mention of Odin.
~Sorry to ask, but little overwhelmed LOL and want to make sure I do this properly and not screw up my phone.
REAL noob here, so apologies if I come across lazy and getting others to do the work, but am really grateful for the help.
Maybe I'm searching incorrectly???
I found this somehow....

Can you unlock your phone with biometrics? Im guessing only the banking apps don't work because it's rooted. If i remember correctly most banking apps and maybe Google pay(not sure about that) stop working after rooting because the phone is "compromised" and it's not safe. You have to hide your root status from these apps and they will work properly then. Maybe someone else can help you with that because i do not remember how to do it.
Hi Marto
Yes, biometrics does work, although not really good. But that's probably due to the hectic screen protector.
Correctly so, it's mostly the banking / payment apps that won't work, and I can't check or download any software updates... Although I belive this can also be done manually....
But wow, there's an app that hides the root status? That might be a whole lot easier than re flashing. Truthfully I'm Sh!tting myself at the thought of attempting this ????

if the phone was bought as new, go back to the dealer and demand a new one that is not rooted.
could also be that your husband rooted the phone and installed software that keep tabs on what you do.
