My Evo is doing fine, but I was trying to help a friend root his yesterday and the Unrevoked 1-click apk didn't appear to be doing the trick. The only difference I can think of between our two phones is that I haven't downloaded the update that came this week. Has Sprint defeated this root method in the most recent patch?
Yes...they are up to UnrEVOked 3.

Right, this method requires you to use a PC though, right? I'm wondering if its still possible to root it using the unrevoked on-phone application, or has this been defeated? And if so, was the defeat in the most recent patch?
bump. I'm afraid the answer given is still a bit unclear to me. Can someone please clarify?
Make sure you are going to 'unrevoked.com/m' if you want to use it on your phone and avoid having to use the pc method. I forgot the /m when I first tried it and got pretty confused as well.

Yes, this is exactly what I did. The apk downloaded and installed, but didn't appear to gain root when I ran it. I ran it several times, but every time I attempted to run wifi tether, it would say that I wasn't root.
You can try downloading the Simple Root app from the development forum, Its only 4 clicks and its a legitimate full root. It does require the PC, but you seem to know how to use one of those as you got to this website.
Don't take shortcuts because your not sure what you're doing, learn

Thank you for the reply. I'll probably end up Simple Root for myself, but this is for a somewhat elderly friend of mine. He only needs root for wifi tether, since he can't get broadband where he lives (3g is okay). I figured the apk root method would be suitable for him since he would know how to uninstall it if he needed to claim is warranty or something. I won't be around to support his phone for him.
Anyway, thanks again. I'm still learning myself and appreciate the advice.
Ahh ok, he can always hit the wipe button and it will go back to a state good enough for the average sprint rep.
I Installed unrevoked 3by usb because i got last version 147.651.1. Its anyway to unroot and get back to stock rom. I tried different ways and nothing for example i wiped data, hard reset . etc.
Right now i dont have wifi is unable and that why i would like get back to stock. Also i use the method with htc sync and the ruu 132.651.1 andgive me error 171 then reintall the ruu give me error 140 and boot to the main screen/
Please any solution to get back to stock .
thanks in advanced,
I'm thinkig Unrevoked team. Should I do Unrevoked3 or forever?
Please any ideas? Custom recoveries or ROMs?

Hahaha research
Unreevoked 3 and forever are two totally different things. Foreverr is now obsolete with the release of 3.2.1. I wouldn't use unrevoked because then you have no idea what root is and how to use it. That's my two cents.
I will be using unrevoked 321 tomorrow to root my new evo. My first evo I rooted using simple root.
I disagree with dkdude36. I did it the hard way when the g1 dream first got rooted. The process is academically enlightening but a waste of time really.
Go for the easy root (unrevoked) unless u have a lot of time to spend learning.
I disagree with jdbiggles...
If you understand how to use a terminal (ADB) and know how to type without error, "the long way" doesn't take more than an hour to obtain root access to your evo!
My personal opinion is to get root with ADB. The things you learn will help you in the future.
Root with unrevoked, as it gives you one step nand unlock and everything. However, if you are not willing to learn ADB and the such, do not root your phone at all.
If this is the first time you have ever rooted an android or HTC device I would recommend doing the "long way", not because it is some stupid right of passage, or that I think you are a dumb n00b if you don't, but because I think that it will help you a lot in the future if you ever run into problems. You don't want to be learning about all this stuff with a bricked phone.
My first experience with rooting / custom roms / adb was with a G1, and then with a Nexus one. This time around, I simply used unrevoked, but that is because I already understand how the process works, and just want to get it done. It is kinda like math class, they make you write it out with pencil and paper, and then only way later can you use a calculator, because if you never did it long form, you would have no idea if the calculator was right or wrong, or any clue of where you made a wrong calculation.
If you run into any problems now or in the future with an android device, you will actually be able to at least sort/solve the simple problems, before needing to post here and wait for an answer, and hope someone posts step by step instructions.
Below are questions I posed in another thread. The root question is apropos to this thread. Can someone please provide me with some direction? I don't mind doing the "manual" way.
Thanks.

1) Is there now a way to use pattern lock only? The Evo still shows the drag down HTC screen lock even when pattern lock is enabled. I have searched all over, have yet to find a solution.
I don't want to run a custom ROM. Will a root give me some ability to disable the drag-down lock?
I also have a Nexus 1. When I enabled the pattern, the regular screen lock is turned off. That is the behavior I'm looking for with the Evo.
2) Root: I want to root to enable all apps to SD, copy files, enable "reboot", etc. I do not care to run a custom ROM. I don't mind having to re-root after an update. I do not want to wipe my phone. I WANT to maintain the ability to receive future OTA updates.
On the N1 platform, there is an easy root method to allow for this. I get Superuser, can run root apps, but still receive OTA and no custom ROM. I'm looking for the same here.
For the Evo, which method whould support this?
I would very much appreciate any help.
Cheers.
Edit: I know what a generic NAND memory is. In this case, why is NAND protection and why does it need to be disabled? What is "S-On/S-Off". I looked through the guides/FAQ, but haven't been able to find anything. Thanks again.

Hey guys,
I just got my replacement phone yesterday and wanted to root, my old launch phone was rooted using toast method. I want to be fully rooted with nand unlock. Is the "how to root Android 2.2" on the development forum the best way to do this? If not what it? Thanks in advance guys.

I rooted my EVO today using the unrEVOked3 one click method....and I'm guessing it's rooted. I tried on "several" occasions to use the shootme app when not rooted and it did not work, however it does now.
On the flip side....I can not tether, as it says I do not have root accsess. Also holding down the volume button and power button, it goes into the white screen and when I hit fastboot it "I'm guessing" scans and comes back saying 'no image found' a bunch of times and returns to the main menu.
When I tried to hit the "recovery" button it went to a blackscreen and showed a picture of my phone with an exclamation point over it. No buttons did anything....pulled the battery and all was well again.
So I went back to the unrEVOked (as I am assuming I have no recovery image on my phone - and I tried to put on on the root of my card and see if fastboot would find it....it did the same scan "no image found" and I wasn't going to try to go into recovery again, lol)...so I went back to UnrEVOked and tried that all over again with the phone pluged it, it found my phone and said pushing recovery 'clockworkmod' and then all of a sudden - failed....terminating push.
I did that twice and I now have no idea how to get a recovery onto my phone.
Could it possibly be that I am rooted and not NAND? How can one tell if they are not NAND (I have no superuser icon)
If anyone has had this issue or is way more experience in this unrevoked one click root thing.....I would much appreciate the help
I recommend against unrevoked because it seems like more problems or steps are needed to get it running smoothly.
Use this guide paired with simple root.

Worked like a charm on my replacement evo.
Thanks man....you have answered a question that has been going around in my head for a little while now. There is no way to root 2.2 yet....one has to root from 2.1 and use rooted 2.2 ROMS.
Well it's good to know that there "IS" a way to revert to 2.1 should I want to root that badly....now that I know I have to go back to eclair, I'm not so sure I want to root.....I love 2.2 Froyo!!!
Thanks, I'll keep doing more research as to if it's worth it....and or if someone has found a way to root 2.2 altogether

Once you downgrade to 2.1 you can root with the 2.1 simpleroot. Then you can flash any rooted Froyo ROM you want. You do not stay at 2.1, unless you flash a 2.1 ROM.
i cannot speak for the unrevoked forever as i have not implemented it and do not plan to.
the unrevoked team has been known to put out a couple products that perhaps were not as fully tested as they should have been. but then again, this is a dev site...it's all use at ur own risk. that being said, unrevoked3 has been out for a while and seems to be ok. i have used it to root phones for friends.

There is a way to root 2.2, it's called Unrevoked. The latest version 3.21 works great. I used it to root 3 EVOs and had no problems at all. It takes 5 minutes.
So i rooted with Unrevoked3 the other day.. Note that im a noob with android. Ive only had my Evo for 2weeks. It was easier than i thought. Im running Myns warm two point two rom and ive customized launcher pro plus, its awesome. So my question is... am i fully rooted now? Cause i was told to download and install Unrevoked Forever after i used Unrevoked3???

yes. you have full root + NAND is unlocked. as per unrevoked3
you do not need to run the UnrevokedForever. i have not and do not see myself running it. if more of the devs whom i have technical respect for start recommending it, then perhaps.
you only really need if 1) you a dev and are playing around with some new update for some reason or 2) ur impatient
for example...there is a new update hitting shelves. folks that are impatient will want to load up the latest and greatest...and will often loose root. rather than wait for Myn to release their updated ROM. personally, i would suggest just waiting for Myn to update.
until you have a better feel for how things work. stick with the 'name brand' Rooted ROMs. they will be updated pretty quick. you can see how many posts some of them have...might be a good indicator of activity.
enjoy you new device.
don't forget
- ALWAYS read the first post all the way thru
- to copy a nandroid over to your computer once in a while. (sux if you have a nandroid from yesterday..but your phone is lost or card melted)
- backup your launcherpro settings
- something like smsbackup+ may be helpful
- titantium backup. the paid version is very much worth it if you plan to play with your build a lot. faster and easier by and far. (look into making the update.zip from within titanium as a backup option)
I like to think I am rather educated in regards to how to root and all that. I just got my replacement Evo today and of course it is updated to 2.3.3. So I can't use unrevoked, but I was hoping to flash over to a older backup I made on 2.2 on my old phone.
Except, when I do the whole hold the volume down + power button and eventually choose recover, all that happens is a image of a phone and a exclamation point appears and it never leaves here.
I know in order for me to be able to use ClockwordMod I need to root the phone, which can't happen on 2.3
So what are my options? How do I flash over my old rom???? Even if it doesnt let me get back to 2.2 its still better than redownloading all my apps.

so there is no way possible for me to recover without rooting?
I still have to do update the drivers on the phone (device manager, installing the unrevoked drivers...unless i need to be rooted for this as well)
so even then I still cant use the recovery option? whats the point of it? HTC doesnt want you rooting, hence 2.3 being stock on Evos, but yet they include the recovery option on their phones which you seemingly cant use...unless...you...root? im confused. Unconfuse me please

Rooting doesnt exactly let you use recovery.
The stock recovery from HTC is basically nothing.
When you do full root. It gives you the ability to install unsigned apps. That is what s-off means (security off). So the bootloader doesnt check to see what your installing is signed by HTC.
So therefore.
1. Root
2. Install custom recovery.
Now some automated root apps (unrevoked) do the whole process for you.
If you root by adb. You would be rooting and installing a custom recovery seperately, if you actually knew what the adb codes were and not just following a tutorial.
You can root and still have no recovery. Root doesnt mean custom recovery. They are two seperate things.
So even though the recovery option is there it is unuseable. Until you root. Then you can get a custom recovery...hope this helps

At this time no. I think its more of a way to get you to buy the next thing from them. If devs keep making the phone feel fresh and new, how long would you wait to upgrade(just my take on it). I believe recovery is there for their developers and carriers developers(to add their bloat) again just my take. Give the devs here sometime and i'm sure they'll find a way to get root back.

i truly hope so. ive been spoiled by CM7. I like to run juicedefender ultimate on CM7 during my work days where im not around a plug and ill be at over 85% on a 15 hour day. on stock HTC 2.3 with the same juicedefender settings running on the same 15 hour day, im down to 50% or lower sometimes. i can live without root for now. the biggest negative is I just cancelled the Sprint hotspot because of CM7.
can you even run the hotspot on stock sense if you aren't paying for it like you could on a root?

My fiancee's EVO 4g was in desperate need of replacing, so we went and got new phones. She had been playing this damned Smurf Village game for about a year and a half, and I thought I'd pull a white knight -- root the phone, back it up on Titanium, transfer the backup to the new phone, root that, restore. She insists she's okay starting over, but I thought it'd be a nice gesture. Rooting the new phone (LG Optimus G) was a piece of cake. The EVO 4g took me some time to get it to work ...
In my poor attempts at multitasking, I didn't do a nandroid backup and completely overlooked where it said it would restore to factory settings.
Is all lost? I did a search on it while it was plugged into the PC as an external drive and found a bunch of (edit: Smurf-related) files, so I feel like the data might still be there.
If not, it's all good. I learned from my mistake (I mean, c'mon, big_onion, every damn set of instructions says "make a nandroid backup") but if there's any way to get it back it might make her day.
Data restoration aside, after flashing Superuser, I still can't get TitaniumBackup to obtain superuser privileges. Any ideas what I might've done wrong? The method I used was to unlock the bootloader via HTC site, then flashboot recovery, then flash superuser. The app is there, but it doesn't seem to issue SU rights to TitaniumBackup.
Best way to gain root is to flash any custom rom here on xda. Unless it is a completely stock rom it is rooted and works without any issues. I rooted my second og evo a few days ago and had the same issue with the stock rom. After flashing a custom rom I had full root access.
Now as far as data goes most apps store that on the sdcard. I suggest installing the game on the new phone then power off and insert your old sdcard into the new phone. Hopefully it will use the old data and return your wife's game to her last state and make you look like a champ.

Uhm...
You don't root android by flashing a rooted custom rom on a non root phone.
Rooting a phone must be done via a PC there is no other way.
Some stock roms ARE root.
The reason you had problems is because you were root and tried to install a non-root stock rom, if you would have installed a rooted stock rom you would of had no problems.
smh
Umm root is done by rom. Unlocking bootloader is the part done by pc.
You can be unlocked without root but can not root until you are unlocked. Rooting is the granting of admin rights to the user's apps.
I did not have an issue because I installed a non rooted rom. The rom was already on the phone which is the same spot the op is in. He is unlocked but not rooted. The htcdev unlock does not grant root rights to the current stock rom. Also the flashable zip did not grant the rom root rights.

They're both done via PC at the same time with the same program (Unrevoked3 is only temporary nand)
Unrevoked Forever unlocks the bootloader permanently via recovery with an .img

Wow man this will be my last response here about this but I want to say a couple quick things. First did you even read the link you posted? Yes with unrevoked you can gain nand unlock and root at the same time but if you also read it says this.
Does unrevokedĀ³ give me root?
Yes. It previously did not; as of version 3.0, it does.
So root and nand unlock are not the same and is not always done at the same time. It is possible to be nand unlocked and not have root. Which is the case when you use htcdev unlock. Do your homework before you go making statements please.
I am not here trying to run anyone down and start fights but I am here to spread knowledge and help out others with problems. I guess he thinks Unrevoked Forever is bad information and harmful to Evos.
Backedup
If you backed up the game, you can always download titanium backup and restore. Make sure you didn't delete the files from sd-card (they should be there). Sorry if this was already answered or i'm wrong. :fingers-crossed:
edit: if its a stock rom and you backup every app with titanium back up you could.
jlmancuso is having a hard week. i would give him a break. as far as i can tell he's genuinely trying to be helpful and is catching crap from all sides these days. eventually he will slow down and not accidentally provoke people (or take things personally). but he seems like valuable asset to the community overall so i'm rooting for him. OP good luck with your issue.
It's already unlocked, via the instructions from the HTC dev site. I didn't use Unrevoked -- I tried, and got a message about something being too new of a version. I'll dig around more, but I before I spent too much time I wanted to make sure I could restore the data on the stupid Smurf game for her.
I did NOT do a Titanium Backup of anything on there before I started. The LG Optimus G doesn't have an SD card, so I can't just swap SD cards. I can copy files from the EVO to the PC then to the LGOG. I think I might install Smurfs on the new phone, root it, then just try and copy the Smurf files from the EVO over to the Optimus G and see if overwriting the data files would restore her game.
Will report back on whether or not it works, or if I can't get superuser working.
And chill out, friends. I appreciate all sorts of info, even if it's not what I'm looking for. Y'all rock.
I am not taking it personally and dont think unrevoked is harmful. I am not going to argue with anyone about the facts. I think he meant "Htcdev site" then "fastboot flash recovery", but it seems like Big_Onion did everything right as far as rooting the phone, but there can be other reasons why Titanium is not working properly. It could be Titanium data needs to be wiped or it could be an issue with busybox. He never said he was not rooted, he only said that superuser was not giving Titanium root permissions, which has happened to me also. I wish he would have ran the root checker app too, to verify did he really have root or not. Then it would be easier to tell which path to take.
And also, why are we arguing over unrevoked and unrevoked-forever? Those don't work on the newer stock roms, because they were patched in 2011 by the first Gingerbread update on. Since big_onion used the Htcdev site, he is likely on Gingerbread. They, unrevoked3 and forever, would only work if he downgraded the radios to the ones which came with either Eclair or Froyo, the two previous operating systems. Titanium backup only needs an unlocked bootloader from the Htcdev site, and superuser permissions from the superuser app to work. Anything else is just extra, at least on Gingerbread.
