Just curious because this question has been raised a few times.
How many of you have your phone number listed as 'unknown' in settings and how many of you have your actual number? (without adding a mod or writing to the sim on a different phone)
e.g. You put your sim in the phone and it just showed up?
Mine is unknown, but doesn't really bother me as I know my number anyway...funnily enough my Nexus 5 did show it

Mine shows but my iPhone wrote it to the Sim card previously.
My number shows. Was a new SIM with this phone.

I have ported my number from 3 to T-mobile and the porting went ahead yesterday, and everything is ok in terms of calling, receiving calls.
However when I check Settings, About Phone, Phone identity, to old number (T-mobil) shows up.
I have switched it off and back on, I've removed battery & sim, but still old number showing.
Thoughts?
Same for me...not overly bothered tho
it's because the new SIMs come with their own number programmed into the SIM.
You could change this on Windows Mobile by using the SIM manager and in the menu you had an option to change the 'My Numbers' stored on the SIM.
Don't know of any way to do this on Android.
Anyway, just save your number in the contacts list in 'Me'.
It really is nothing to worry about, but you can go ahead and dump the SIM into another phone to change the number if you really want to....
It's annoying when you know it's wrong isn't it?
Mine read 'Unknown' so I took my SIM out, jammed it into my spare WM phone and programmed it in SIM Manger as mentioned above.
Android still reports it as 'Unknown', I can't win
Yes I definitely want to change it... uhhh So no app for Android does this yet?

Depends. Personally, this wouldn't bother me in the slightest. My last windows mobile phone said unknown for the whole time i had it. Made no difference to me whatsoever. but that's just me. I have other stuff to get annoyed about
I guess it just can't read it from the SIM for some reason if it's still showing as unknown. And AFAIK there is no app for it. Although maybe someone else here knows otherwise?
I don't know if it's going to be an issue eventually, i can still receive calls and make them, however, when i look in the settings. My number doesn't appear.
when i go in the information menu *#*#4636#*#* my number is blank as well.
Is this the same for everyone?
T-Mobile SGII t989
I have the same exact issue. *shrugs* someone at t-mobile said it was okay. I work for sprint, it doesn't sound right to me. Keep me updated and I'll keep you updated.
Rob
Mine is showing then phone number, do you have the updated sim card? And are you running a custom ROM?
if ur # isnt showing im guessing its something to do with sim card
Well they changed my SIM card when i bought the phone. That's all i can say, it's a different sim, the chip itselft is half the size than it used to be.

It won't cause any issues but it does have to do with the sim card. My phone says the same thing and has a new sim card as well. Call customer care and see if tech support has an answer for this.

Was the same for me (Telus). Some googling revealed that CM7 had a GUI option that could update the SIM card so I flashed that on my old Desire, put the SIM in it and set the phone number. Swapping the SIM back into the SG2X now correctly shows the phone number under My Number.
My number didn't show until I called a T-mo CSR and had them get rid of that blasted "web guard" crap. I noticed my number showed up sometime after the CSR intructed me to reboot and the 4hrs they said to wait for changes to take effect.

this solution worked for me :
go to the contacts application
touch menu ( lower left button = )
more
settings
own numbers
menu
create
enter your number
optionally enter a name
touch save
power off the phone
power on the phone
verify the change by going to menu > settings > about phone > status : phone nr or *#*#4636#*#*
I don't think this is normal, but... Is it normal? because it hasn't been recognizing the phone number from the time I first started it up..
Nevertheless, I can still do anything that a normal phone would do.. like text, 3g, calls. It doesn't affect any of my day-to-day uses at all.
(some of the text on the screenie's is in Japanese b/c I use Jp language settings)
Thanks in advance
It's normal.

Are you sure it's normal? Mine displays my number in the "My phone number" field.
My phone number is 'unknown' according to my gnex. Always has been that way. Probably sim and/or carrier related.

Yeah as long as your IMEI shows, you're good to go. Mine displays my number but its most likely related to the carrier as the person above me noted.
Does anyone else have a different phone number (to what your number actually is) in the about phone section under settings?
Just installed this on my L...

Yeah I do too.
This is due to me buying the phone with a new sim plan, and then transferring my number over a couple of days later. For some reason the temporary number is still displayed under about phone.
Yeah, I think I recognise the number as one I had a year or so back but never used it on this phone. Very strange. Not sure how to change it as Where'sMyDroid wants to use that number

I have been reading some really scary things regarding Sim Cards and viruses or malware or whatever and am wondering if I should change my sim card. A part of me thinks that the idea of a Sim card being infected is silly, but at the same time, I really would not know, lol.
If I were to upgrade my sim card...
Would it put my unlimited data at risk? (Verizon)
How would I go about changing my Sim? Could I use the sim that came with my note 4?
Also, should anyone even worry about their sim cards? o .0
SIM cards are free at corporate stores and you will not lose your unlimited.
Just take your phone in and ask for a new SIM. If they ask why tell them you've been getting errors or something. It takes like 5 minutes if there's no wait.
I don't think you can do a SIM swap online but you probably can by calling customer service from a different phone
Edit: If you call CS for a SIM swap make sure you have your other SIM on hand for the ICCID
Ah.. I see!
I actually tried to do a sim swap at home because google made it seem simple; however, it never worked to my knowledge. At first, I popped in the sim and it said that it was setting up, but never finished. While my phone was trying to activate with the new sim card, I went to the verizon wireless website and tried to activate my phone there, but could not find my phone listed in the section with previously activated phones. I did not try the option to activate a phone that wasn't registered already and just backed out. I did not - to my knowledge - see any screen indicating plan changes so I'm assuming that I did not do anything that could compromise my plan(?). When I dialed the number for activating sim cards, it went to the visual *611 screen and claimed that it did not recognize my number and asked me to log in to my verizon account. After doing so, nothing seemed to happen and it just sent me back to my home screen.
In hindsight, I probably should have stopped after it asked me to log in to my verizon account, but I suppose now all I can do is wait and ask questions to ease my anxiety x_x

You have to call that number from a different phone. Your phone doesn't hold your phone number so just popping a new SIM won't do anything.
You could try to do the "activate device" thing online but I don't know if there's an option to use a different SIM.
