I had both.
The Samsung is BY FAR the better tablet. The Asus is awful. The lag problem is very very real.

The CPU does not make de difference if the OS is not well integrated. I had the TF201 and nothing but lag. Asus is not a software company, it's an hardware one. OS wize, Asus tab are not optimized.
Samsung, even though they have touchwiz, lag to a minimum compared to other ones. Their update are maybe slower coming but they are much more robust and optimized for a better experience.

I have a nexus S and some games like GTA3 and temple run heavily lag. I was thinking of upgrading to galaxy nexus but I am not sure about it's combination of resolution and GPU? I mean in nenamark 2 my nexus S scores the same as galaxy nexus. :S
Ofcourse there is a dual core CPU and more Ram which might actually be the limitation of nexus S as I doubt the SGX540 is limiting me at 800x480. But still want to confirm gaming performance.
Well on temple run I experience no lag whatsoever, same for every other game I play, don't have any experience with gta 3 though.

You are on stock?
GTA3
I was playing GTA3 earlier today and it runs smooth. I had a Galaxy S II and that ran it a little smoother then the Nexus but it almost seemed a little sped up. You will be happy with GTA3 on the Nexus....
Nothing lags. With the CPU handling the HD Decoding the GPU is left to do most of the graphics.
GTA3 works great btw.

Did not find any game that is unplayable or slow so far....
All the internal memory is available, that is the beauty of MTP, you don't have different partitions, so everything is installed over the same partition (and there is a symbolic link to /mnt/sdcard in order to make applications that want to save anything to the SDCARD happy, but again, it is the same partition, so all your free space is available no matter what you wanna do).
Temple Run is silky smooth for me on a stock GSM phone with 4.0.1. I experienced lag playing Six Guns though.
I experience a tiny bit of lag on stock 4.0.4
Flashed liquidsmooth and franco kernel though and everything has been super smooth since.
I experienced lag spikes when running gangstar Rio city of saints ... not sure is it software issue though.

I got a *tiny* bit of lag when playing Dead Space...although, I was at the time getting a text message, and email, and a calendar notification within about 1 minute of each other so I would like to think it wasn't really the game causing the lag. Haha. Dead Space runs amazingly well otherwise, though. Very happy with that purchase.
9mm seems to lag to me, and shadowgun is choppy but I guess its just the controls

yeah i thought the same but, like in most smartphones today, only the numbers matters. pretty sure normal users wouldn't even know that there is such a thing like a pentile matrix

The galaxy S2 had a fairly low resolution compared to it's competitors and yet it managed to be a huge success. But yes you are right, the HD pentile screen was put purely for marketing purposes.
Or better yet the nexus should have had iphone 4S GPU.
I wish samsung supported it's phones better, I would have gone with an S2 without a second thought.
Now the only other option is HTC one S which brings in faster chipset but significantly lower resolution so much better gaming performance. Now if only the pricing is right.
I'm on a Verizon Galaxy nexus running stock 4.0.2 and regarding GTA3 I haven't noticed any lag at all (I'm on the second island with hi-res textures and the mod to enable streetlights etc).
Temple run on the other hand runs horribly. After about 1500m or whenever the red coins start coming I started noticing major lag to the degree of making the game unplayable. It's sad that a second gen iPod touch can play this game fine but the galaxy nexus can't.

For this time. Playing Games on Note 8.0 is ok. I have Fifa 2012, MC4, Fieldrunner 2, Real Rancing 3 and them run ok. But, I think for a longtime isn't good choice.
My son just got this tablet and I can tell you every game we have put on it has worked flawlessly. For us any game that works on my 10.1 has played as well if not better on the note 8 (including real racing 3).

All devices with Exynos 4412 are proved to be great in stability test, almost no throttling.
I'm doing a complete thumb suck here, but I expect the mali400 gpu that's in the Note 8.0 to start showing it's age in a year to two years.
What I mean by that is top games will still be very playable... But lag will become more and more noticeable in certain areas of the game. Either that or some of the bells and whistles will be turned off in the version that's 'officially' available to us on the Play Store.
After all... There will be a never ending push for ever more demanding games to 'show off' just how much better flagship devices are to previous generations. The Note 8.0 has a weaker gpu than the phone I bought 2 years ago... It can't be *that* much longer before it can no longer keep pace...
Just sayin....

I think note 8.0 better. And maybe 6 month for heavy game. Normal games is no problems. Sorry for my bad English.
Sent from my GT-N5100 using xda app-developers app
The note 8 is very fast but uses the Mali 400 GPU, an older (is it two years old now?) GPU.
For gaming, I'd hold off until after Google I/O to see what devices are announced. If the N7 is refreshed with the Mali 604 or so (and/or a Tegra 4) and a decent display, you might want to wait until it can be ordered.
In ordinary use, the GN8 is the fastest Android device I've used, and has the least lag of any Android device I've used. The Nexus 7 is very good, but it's just not playing in this league. I'm sure there are some Tegra optimized games that the N7 will do better on, but the UI overall is not this quick.
Incredibly fast in my use, and I play numerous graphics intensive games. DEFINITELY better than n7, trust me, I've owned both

Can the Mali 400 GPU be overclocked with a custom kernel in order to squeese a little more performance from it?
Overclocking the Tegra 2 GPU on my ASUS Transformer as well as the CPU made a big difference in its gaming performance.

I'm having a little trouble tracking down exactly when the Mali-400 MP gpu was first released, but here's an article on it from 2008: !!!
http://beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=48319
It was still a pretty beefy gpu in the Galaxy SII in 2011... But as far as I know was upstaged by the Adreno 220, which was to be found in the HTC Sensation (the phone I bought in 2011).
Some more info from back then:

I got the device mainly becouse I found a good deal it fit my not too high budget for a tablet. I am also a mobile gamer and I thought with its octa cpu it would handle all games perfectly. That does not seem to be the case, on highest grafics setting asphalt 8 runs at <20 fps while my HTC One m7 runs it perfectly. Is there any way to fix that? Also is there any chance of cyanogenmod for this device? I know it's hard for exynos cpus but is there really no way?

I tried asphalt 8 and the FPS was very low... I was very disapointed.
but I'm pretty sure the problem is software related (this game is not optimized for the device), because I installed NFS most wanted and I was blown away with the graphics and smoothness of the game. If you like a good racing game similar (even better in my opinion) to asphalt 8, I highly recommend that you install NFS most wanted.:good:
an update by samsung or gameloft will eventually solve these problems...

Hi guys,
i've got galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition (P602). I installed asphalt 8 but its running very slow on high graphics settings. I can only play this game very low graphics setting.
My Android version is 4.4.2. And I tried factory reset.
Is here any body having this issue?

Thank You. I gave my device to Samsung service then i read your post.
Can also report that the game runs well on my 607T (Exynos). The only exception is if I launch it.. before maybe 15 mins post boot, doing so results in extremely laggy performance. Otherwise it's all good, particularly so with Sixaxis & a PS3 controlller :good:
i recently bought Asus zenfone 2 ze551ml 4gb variant but i was very disappointing with its performance. i got the phone and it showed me system update 2.19.40 so i updated it and then installed a few games like asphalt 8, nova, mc5, etc. which i though this device would be able to handle pretty well. but to my surprise the these games didn't performed smooth...there weren't any lags but stutters in almost all the games. now i had seen many videos of gaming performance before buying this phone and everywhere it performed up to the mark. now i heard some where that the latest update is causing this. is this true?
is there a solution to this problem?

The version you are referring to is not the latest update... Asus provided some graphic optimization in some update (i cant recall which update it was) So update your phone to the latest firmware (2.19.40.22) and then check... I am on latest firmware and i have mc4, mc5, nova and they all play fine...smooth no lags no stutters or glitches

thank you for the reply sir. yes, i checked, i am on the same firmware as you. the main issue is with asphalt 8. nova and mc5 are still ok, even riptide gp 2 has the same unsmooth game play...there is no lag but it looks like there are heavy frame drops. can you check it with asphalt 8. i am getting an fps of 28 (checked it with gamebench).
Yes, I played mc5 and asphalt 8 and also experienced micro stutter on the 551ml with the newest firmware. Gameplays looked alot smoother on youtube videos.
I tried moving the games to internal memory, but same problem.

Thanks for the reply, but those are steps I took before playing each game, and i always clear my cache after each firmware update. So I do not believe any of those steps offered a viable solution.
Edit-- These are the results of Asphalt 8. Phone was off charger, and in performance mode. Cache was also cleared in recovery. Also, in the xda review of the zf2, he said he got 45 fps.
