I have a nexus S and some games like GTA3 and temple run heavily lag. I was thinking of upgrading to galaxy nexus but I am not sure about it's combination of resolution and GPU? I mean in nenamark 2 my nexus S scores the same as galaxy nexus. :S
Ofcourse there is a dual core CPU and more Ram which might actually be the limitation of nexus S as I doubt the SGX540 is limiting me at 800x480. But still want to confirm gaming performance.
Well on temple run I experience no lag whatsoever, same for every other game I play, don't have any experience with gta 3 though.

You are on stock?
GTA3
I was playing GTA3 earlier today and it runs smooth. I had a Galaxy S II and that ran it a little smoother then the Nexus but it almost seemed a little sped up. You will be happy with GTA3 on the Nexus....
Nothing lags. With the CPU handling the HD Decoding the GPU is left to do most of the graphics.
GTA3 works great btw.

Did not find any game that is unplayable or slow so far....
All the internal memory is available, that is the beauty of MTP, you don't have different partitions, so everything is installed over the same partition (and there is a symbolic link to /mnt/sdcard in order to make applications that want to save anything to the SDCARD happy, but again, it is the same partition, so all your free space is available no matter what you wanna do).
Temple Run is silky smooth for me on a stock GSM phone with 4.0.1. I experienced lag playing Six Guns though.
I experience a tiny bit of lag on stock 4.0.4
Flashed liquidsmooth and franco kernel though and everything has been super smooth since.
I experienced lag spikes when running gangstar Rio city of saints ... not sure is it software issue though.

I got a *tiny* bit of lag when playing Dead Space...although, I was at the time getting a text message, and email, and a calendar notification within about 1 minute of each other so I would like to think it wasn't really the game causing the lag. Haha. Dead Space runs amazingly well otherwise, though. Very happy with that purchase.
9mm seems to lag to me, and shadowgun is choppy but I guess its just the controls

The galaxy S2 had a fairly low resolution compared to it's competitors and yet it managed to be a huge success. But yes you are right, the HD pentile screen was put purely for marketing purposes.
Or better yet the nexus should have had iphone 4S GPU.
I wish samsung supported it's phones better, I would have gone with an S2 without a second thought.
Now the only other option is HTC one S which brings in faster chipset but significantly lower resolution so much better gaming performance. Now if only the pricing is right.
I'm on a Verizon Galaxy nexus running stock 4.0.2 and regarding GTA3 I haven't noticed any lag at all (I'm on the second island with hi-res textures and the mod to enable streetlights etc).
Temple run on the other hand runs horribly. After about 1500m or whenever the red coins start coming I started noticing major lag to the degree of making the game unplayable. It's sad that a second gen iPod touch can play this game fine but the galaxy nexus can't.

Anyone have any clue as to how N64oid will perform on the Galaxy Nexus? The gpu is less than overwhelming, and with the notable increase in screen resolution, it's being strained even harder.
I don't have any idea how N64oid utilizes resources, the CPU should certainly be fast enough to power the game, but is it going to be playable with the SGX540?

If it doesn't work well... just wait for a more powerful smartphone. If the Galaxy Nexus can't do it, no smartphone can either. At least, not yet.
I want to know how well psx emulators work. Im sure nes/snes will be fine.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
Well has anyone tried it on an Archos 101 or Archos 80 Turbo? They're running the same chip, and have similar resolutions. (the 101's running 1280x600 and the 80 is 1024x768) if it runs well on them, it should run well on the Galaxy Nexus.

food for thought-
nexus s released with the exact same hardware as the galaxy s(released 1 yr b4 it). same hummingbird soc, same gpu, same ram, etc etc.it was the time when there were phones like the atrix around. extremely dissapointing. but even now the nexus s is one of the highest benchmarked, best performing phones around. reason? not hardware, but software. google is a huge and vastly successful company,as is samsung, no doubt. there are brains inside google that retards like the "nexus haters" cant even grasp the height of. when they build a phone, they build one on which they can apply all the optimizations and improvements that they possibly can; they know, that by the time they are done with the GN, they will have extracted 100% out of it. Samsung on the other hand , will be hard pressed to deliver ics+tw, u would be a fool to expect them 2 integrate all the optimizations that google comes up with, every time. stop looking at benchmarks. samsung wont even be able to harness 60% the power of the mali400, let alone 100%. look at galaxy tab 10.1 n xoom. nexus s n galaxy s.
BECAUSE GOOGLE MAKES ANDROID, NOT SAMSUNG.
If they think its best to use 4460 instead of exynos,it is.
If they think it is best not 2 use sdcard, it isnt. (i dont agree with it tho)
If they think its best to include sgx540, then it is. trust me, they know what they are doing. They know that gs2 has mali400, and almost all games released in the future will be tested to run on the GN. So if they think that clocking it at 384 will outperform mali400, who r u 2 argue??????????????
So in the end , if you are really sure that samsung will optimize the gs2 2 its full potential, will give out updates every month, and your gs2's tw infested hardware will save your ass for the next 2 years, then go ahead, bash GN all you like.
Because, truthfully, its not GN vs GS2 at all, its what you "think" vs what all the designers @google+samsung THINK is best.
PERIOD.

check this out 2.
I agree that optimizations have the potential to make up for deficits in actual hardware improvements. (though saying that it can make up for a 4 year old gpu which already got its chance to be optimized on the Nexus S is stretching it) But my point is still not about hardware optimization, my question is weather or not anyone has experience running emulators on similar hardware, no need to jump all over me.

n64oid like most emulators on the Android platform runs the games at their native resolution and just stretches them. It doesn't actually render them in the screens native resolution, so the processing power involved in simply stretching the image and not even doing any upscaling in the conventional sense is minimal.
Thanks, that gives me a lot more confidence in the device. As well, I've seen some video of split screen multiplayer on a HDTV using controllers, if the SGSII can do that, I think I should be able to play some Starfox on Nexus.
... ... ...
My Captivate ran PSX4Droid just fine (I'm not sure about N64oid, I don't believe I used it on my Captivate). Granted, it had DesignGear's ROM on it, and had a custom kernel, but it ran emulators without a hiccup. Well, except for the sound, but that had to do with the emulator, not the phone.
I didn't play a ton of games on it, but I know FFVII and Brave Fencer Musashi ran pretty much perfectly. I don't think the GN will have an issue with this at all.
No one should be using PSX4Droid anymore. FPSE destroys it in terms of features, performance, compatibility, etc
... ... ...
... ... ...
N64oid plays all games flawlessly without hiccups on my g2x (1ghz tegra 2) so I would assume it would work just as well

Good sound.
Near flawless on aosp sgs...little laggy on touchwiz charge. No worries about n64 or psx2 emulation on this phone. I expect comparable performance to a sgs ii in most areas gpu wise. Obviously each chip has their own pros and cons but they're definitely both high end.

All I'm worried about is that the next gen games won't work well with the Galaxy Nexus. These games look great, but with Apple and other companies (e.g Samsung) pushing mobile gaming, and the new mobile GPU's that are coming out, ours is already obsoleted and probably won't be good enough to play a lot of games in the future

From what I've seen, gaming on the "higher end" phones simply just add useless eye candy and don't effect overall game play at all. I love eye candy, don't get me wrong, but I don't fear that we'll be left out in the cold.
With Quad-Core not even out yet, I don't think we'll be seeing anything that requires a "Quad-Core or higher" for a long time.
I also just noticed how the software buttons rotate depending on orientation. Life's simple joy!
Forgive me for not being so knowledgeable on technology, but I would be mistaken in thinking that even if Quad-Core is released, most phones won't even be able to utilise it properly for a good year or two? And by the time they are put to good use, all our Galaxy Nexus contracts will be up and we'll be eligible for an upgrade and we'll be hopping on the newest Nexus?
So quad-core doesn't even matter for a while even if they are being released next year?
Back on topic the phone looks insanely smooth, even when you had all them games open it was silky! I'm loving it a lot, getting it tomorrow
could you test the kairosoft games? like game dev story and the others?

Exactly my thoughts. For example on mine Plants v. Zombies looks great and works great for a few minutes, then freezes when under heavy load (i.e. "Final Wave" pushes). It can't be the GPU or memory issues because other (just as graphically heavy- if not more so) games (like Tiki Golf 2) are perfect.
I just want to clarify how good that first game is?

Well yea you'd think so... Gamelofts version of optimising for nexus 7 means allowing it to run it. It's not optimised at all. For example, there was a hox version of modern combat 3, which ran beautifully. Nexus 7 play store downloads a version that runs like a really quick slide show. nova 3 on the hox, the version I tried, had all effects like the iphone4 version. It did run like crap also. The nexus play store version runs similar, but doesn't have the smoke and lighting effects. Dark knight runs steppy, etc...etc... Hamdir is running a thread to make tegra games 60fps... This is a whole other issue, getting games above 30fps on a cutting edge chipset. Especially as I've seen my friend play nova 3 on his sensation at what I perceived as 60fps. It looked amazing!!

man again u r not being fair, I played on the sensation its 60fps with every effect disabled, n I mean dead flat no reflection on any surface
mass effect v1.30 on the hox had much less effect n ran over 60fps
also sgs3 runs nova3 at 60fps with everything on, ripetide runs very badly
effects on the hox for nova is a luck issue the game gets confused by the 3d dots menu and turns them on
with a custom kernel like faux004b6 nova3 runs very well
the gaming app, faux kernel and my guide proves there is nothing wrong with tegra its just software issues
all HTC has to do is include a performance profile

I believe I'm being pretty fair? Gameloft need to pull their finger it and get optimising for tegra. Whilst I get what youre doing on hox, and the need for performance profiles, the same issues with Gameloft games are present on the nexus 7, whikt tegra games are just smoother out of the box than hox was. Its gamelofts issues here, not tegra.

As someone who uses his devices for gaming extensively, I can assure you that gaming on your Note 2 would be a great experiance. I have tried almost every high end game in the market on N7100, and till now have not experianced any sort of lag or any other problems. NOVA 2,3, Shadowgun, GTA Vice City Modern Combat 2,3, NFS Most Wanted, Dead Space, Backstab, Dead Trigger, BIA2, Virtua Tennis etc and originally PC games like Max Payne and GTA 3 etc all run very smoothly. The only problem I have yet had is with MC 4, but I think it's only because of a script I am running and not the fault of the device. I have also heard that there are problems with Asphalt 7 but as I had played it a lot on my Tab 2 I am not really interested in downloading it again.
My theory is that one shouldn't hold the most powerful mobile device in the world in his hand if he has no interests in gaming By the time I am done with this device I will have had my money's worth

As said above, all games I have played run amazing on the N2. It's a great gaming 'phablet'. I have heard Asphalt 7 and MC4 are running a tad slow, but MC4 is having this issue on other high end phones as well. I will try MC4 very soon...
the two main games ive got on my note 2 are wild blood and nfs most wanted.
with nfs most wanted, the framerates are much more playable compared to my nexus 7. however, its still note quite at 60fps. it generally depends on the amount of action, but early game, it sticks pretty close to 60fps. late game, when you start having lots of high speed cars on screen, along with police in corvettes and road blocks, i've seen it drop down to 25fps. its still far more playable compared to my nexus 7 (nexus 7 drops to around 7-15fps around some of these parts), but its still a notable drop.
that being said, i do come from a PC gaming background, and i've got my computer set up so it never drops below 60fps at max settings, which is the only reason why i notice most of the drops and stutters. for most people, it will probably still seem really slow.
as for wild blood, havent played it much, but it seems to run at a fairly low framerate (lower compared to nfs mw anyhow). still playable though.
compared to my note 1 and nexus 7 though, the note 2 is a much better device. much more oomph, a lot less stutter, a lot less lag, much more responsive overall.

I have nfs just to test out this phone and honestly I was totally expecting it to run 100% smoothly considering the ranting and raving of this device, not to mention the heavy dollar amount for a 16 gig phone. I am thoroughly impressed with it. Seems to me that gameloft is the only company making games that can really test the phone so they can expect some profit now that they have something that works with their games. Only thing I don't like about the phone is not the largeness but rather the fact that everything downloaded goes straight to the internal memory, including picture downloads etc. So I have to go to the computer and manually transport it to the sd card but that's a small drawback for me.

if youre talking about picture downloads from the browser, go into the browser, settings, advanced, and change the default storage.
you can also set the camera to default storage to the memory card, but this only works for individual snaps. burst snaps will save to internal memory by default (to avoid slow memory cards slowing down the burst rate), and you'll have to move them later.
MC4 runs flawless on my device.

You didn't mention the goodness of the battery life. After playing 1 hour of NFS MW and wi-fi on, I still managed to to get 7 hours screen-on time. Amazing!
I watched a video of gamplay but on note 2 and S3 runs only on high graphics there is no very high like in nexus 4 and xperia z and other devices like s4 and htc one. Are the note 2 and S3 out of dated, and is the MALI-400MP so bad it cant run this game which graphic is simillar to GTA Vice City on the maximum like the other devices? I dont play alot of games but this is stupid those devices are 6-7 months old and they are out dated or this is only made by gameloft cuz they sux in optimising there games for the smartphones with exynos processors. What is your opinion?
*Gameloft logic* no one can understand it
btw note 2 can handle the game better than most of the devices including Nexus 4 and XZ
My mistake Snapdragon S4 cant run it on Very High too (adreno 320) So it looks like gameloft failed again like asphalt 7 and also not optimising games for tegra 3.

Gangstar Vegas suks...
I was so disappointed by the graphics, it looks hideous on my note 2 even with edge enhancement and color correction(via perseus kernel)...The draw distance is terrible as in trees and houses just pop up within a really short radius,The textures suck bad, this is more noticeable because the character model is really good(with edge enhancement),The size is crazy for the quality of graphics
Basically don't waste your space, money or bandwidth for this game until someone or gameloft(motherfuks) fix this nonsense of a game...
The game was just downloading and reached 800MB and by seeing your comment I feel like stopping and deleting the game..because I dont want to waste all that space for a game not being good(just on note 2)
Gameloft so disappointing nowadays..Note 2 has 2GB RAM+1.6Ghz qaud-core+Mali 400MP and runs on 4.1.2 so how comes they provide better quality to phones like nexus 4 which has only 1GB RAM and is slower than note 2 in every aspect

GTA Vice City have better graphics and run with 60 FPs on maximum graphics, maximum resolution 100% draw distance. So gameloft must optimise their games first and then to put them in the playstore.

Nexus 4 1gb ram? Slower? Ahahaha
Deal with it. Note 2 have Mali-400 which is the worst ( i didn't said the slower) gpu ever. Rendering colors at 16bits isn't good ..
YES! there is

I have tried to run this game on captivate on stock rom, it was running on it with low graphics(but Lagging), but it was playable. Is there any way to run it without lag. by installing some custom rom or anything

Not sure what you saw & what device it was on but the graphics in Vegas are MUCH better than any ofbthe GTAs including the newest San Andreas. Its make GTA look very dated. Though even on my HTC One M7 the draw distances are horrible & things just pop up as stated. Its obviously a coding problem because its the same weather on very high or medium graphics. So its just poor all the time. If it was the device being pushed to hard lowering the graphics would improve things it does not. But as long as your not in a vehicle moving fast its butter Smooth even on very high on the M7. But again its no where close to the GTA games the textures, models, & lighting are significantly better in the Gangstar game. I own both & play both.
