I'm finally ready to Root! :) - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have the T-Mobile gs4, had it for almost a year now. I just want to accomplish 2 seemingly simple things by rooting:
1. The ability to have UNLiMITED mobile hotspots at lte speeds. No throttling
2. Be able to unroot without there being any evidence that I've ever rooted... for warranty\insurance purposes just in case.
Anything else is just a bonus
Is there a way to accomplish this simply and easily? I know there are several ways and need a little direction.

For question one. My experience is that Hotspot mods are hit and miss. Also, there is no Hotspoting on LTE
For your second question, it's possible to unroot and go back to stock if you are on a non-Knox bootloader. If you OTA or Kies upgraded to 4.3 or 4.4.2 TW, you will have Knox, making it impossible to go back to 4.2.2 and to go back to completely stock

I have no problem using hotspot on lte (granted I am running my custom ROM and am rooted)
For the second question, if you root and trip knox you can still go back to 4.2.2 via a custom ROM. But not official 4.2.2 via a tar file flashed in Odin.

#2 question, most mod posts clearly state your warranty is void if you mod. Kind of seems not right if you need to hide what you've done to the handset. If you aren't willing to let go of your warranty,I'd recommend leaving it stock.

Actually people are reporting that having a tripped knox counter has not prevented them from getting a T-Mobile warranty replacement. I myself am considering upgrading my bootloader to 4.4.2 and having knox and tripping it.
In addition, from my research, knox counter is only important for business and enterprise situations where having a fail safe method of determining if the device has been modified in any way that may pose a security risk.

Thanks all for help... I rooted and used Fennys rom.. tripped knox of course but im not worried about it.

Actually the original question was not precise.
If you had your phone for long time and never upgraded to officially to T-Mobile kitkat, then you won't have a problem.
Could flash recovery, then flash custom kitkat rom, and most of them have Knox removed.
And then when needed You can flash official rom and clear flash counter using triangle away and send for warranty replacement.

I did upgrade to official kit kat.

Are you sure? People reporting that they received a new phone even tho they tripped KNOX warranty are most likely getting a new phone by insurance, not warranty. A warranty phone goes straight to Samsung in which they check to see if KNOX was triggered to 0x1 as an insurance phone is sent to the carrier. The carrier makes sure the screen is good, no water damage and that the phone is functional. By time an insurance phone is sent back to Samsung you already have a new phone and there is nothing Samsung can do about it.

Actually i think you have that backwards. Insurance claims does not matter the phones condition. It could be in a million pieces and you will still get a new one. Warranty claims you get the new device and then have to sent the old one back within so many days or they charge you for it. And just search the threads. There is a specific thread relating to the knox counter where people are posting their experiences. They all said they are getting the same phone back (verifying it with their IMEI number and MAC number and things like that) with a knox 0 counter. So Samsung themselves must have a way to revert the counter on our devices. I'm just going off of what i have been researching. The info is there, whether or not its factual is the reason i have not upgraded my bootloader. Which i still feel like doing.

Yea maybe I do have it a little twisted. But I know for sure that you cant get a brand new phone after you trip KNOX. Maybe get your old phone back with KNOX back to 0x0 but they will have that logged and the warranty would still be voided

One of reasons for Knox was to combat so, people who root and mess up original software.

They don't "log" anything. If they refuse warranty they won't even send you your original back fixed. They won't even touch it. Even if knox was not tripped, you NEVER get a new phone back through warranty.
Call up a T-Mobile store near you yourself and ask them this "If I trip my KNOX counter in the download mode can I still get a warranty claim on my device?" 99 percent of them will say "what". Cause they aren't told to look for that. If the phone still powers on, and is "operable" then you can get a warranty claim. If you have a brick, (no download mode or anything) then they usually don't grant the warranty (in my experience anyhow). And if they do grant a warranty claim with the device not even getting to download mode and the knox was tripped, how do you suppose they are able to check it? The whole myth of knox warranty counter in download mode to keep people from rooting is truly that. If you flash something into the download mode partition and wipe it out, there is no way for them to check what that counter status was. Unless they have some super high tech fancy way of checking after flashing the bootloader back. But even that is enough for a consumer (granted a techie consumer) to get their phone back to working status..

That's not what i have been discovering though my research. The MAIN reason for KNOX was so enterprises and businesses have a fool proof way of detecting if their devices have been tampered with in any way to avoid security issues.

I really hope they can too as I just got back from picking up my note 3. I really want to root this thing but am going to stay stock for a bit to see if maybe someone can figure something out.
I'm not hopeful though because from what I've read it trips an efuse on root or flash of an custom bootloader. There is however a guy on Google plus(commenting on chainfire's post about knox) that is claiming that knox will reset if you replace the emmc.

It's not that I don't have faith in the developers, but there will come a point where they will be unable to hack security restrictions such as knox. They may not be able to come up with a workaround to prevent blowing the efuse that trips the knox warranty void. This isn't a knock on developers because these guys are very talented. It's just the reality of having interest in a technology that companies are looking to make more secure. The more holes that developers exploit, the more secure android gets. It's the nature of the game.
If you haven't owned a Motorola device any time recently take a peek at their forums. They have those things locked down pretty tight. The Bionic had a locked bootloader, but was able to be rooted. When it received the last ota, djrbliss released a root exploit for it that had to be done in Linux (or a Linux VM). It's not possible to do in Windows. It is my understanding that djrbliss had retired from releasing root exploits because they have become so much more difficult to work around (I think it also had to do with people not paying attention to directions and a sense of entitlement...).
We are lucky because we have a device with an unlocked bootloader. Those with devices on AT&T and Verizon who have locked down devices won't always be so lucky. And we won't be if they continue to increase the level of security for us also.

Stop buying Samsung products! ...Web Boycot!
I just sent the following mesage to Samsung:
"I bought the Note 2 when it first came out in 2012. I would like to replace it with the Note 3. BUT Samsung has made it impossible to reset the flash counter (with Triangle Away for example). So I can not, for example, use the Allshare Cast dongle with a rooted Note 3. This is unacceptable policy. I will not buy another Samsung device (of any kind) until Samsung eliminates this restrictive policy. So there is a $700 sale lost. Multiply that loss by thousands and ask yourselves if you are pursuing the right customer friendly policy with this restriction. "
I ask othes to send a similar message to Samsung. Lets start a Web Boycot over this isue!

No you're not screwed you can return the device to factory rom for warranty return . if you're not willing to learn how to do this simple procedure then don't root but of course root give you so much more functionality . root is really a basic necessity in my opinion and manufacturers should not be preventing this . we pay serious money to own these devices and we should be able to use them as we see fit.

Exactly. For the hell of it, I flashed back to stock and entered download mode after everything was intact. It read 0x1, which means the warranty is completely void. So I said screw it and am going to return it to T-Mobile. Absolutely ridiculous that my $700 toy has no warranty protection. Not worth it in my book, sorry galaxy fan boys lol.
I will be e-mailing Samsung about this. If the Note 3 didn't have such poor sound out of the box, I wouldn't have to flash a custom rom.

I'll hold off on my root on my new N3. I have faith in Chainfire.
And has nothing to do with "fan boys". The N3 is in incredible piece of hardware. Don't think for a sec this will only stay with Samsung. Soon all mfg's will have this....watch. It's just a matter of time until the talented devs will find a way to get past it. Then, an even better phone (HTC,Sam, etc) will come out with even more of a roadblock.

Does Knox not come Preinstalled on TMOBILE Note 3

I just recently got a Note 3 which i use on Metro PCS. I haven't had any Samsung system updates so I'm still on the stock 4.3.3 rom. I noticed every now and then, I'll get a notification about an app being blocked so i figured I'd check if it's Knox or the annoying security scanner that came with the phone
so i clicked on Knox and got a screen with Knox saying to install 200mb. Since it doesn't seem to be installed...Can I root this phone without tripping the warranty counter?

Sent from my SM-N900T using xda app-developers app
Knox is on your phone. It's probably additional files needed to run it, but you have knox and as such you have the warranty void counter. You can root de la vega and keep your knox warranty or cf auto root if you don't care. I would stay away from kingo based on what I've read on this forum.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Is there an advantage to rooting with something besides the root de Vega that would trip knox. I would like to root to a lighter ROM that gives me longer battery usage cause this guy can't squeeze out more than 4 and half hour of screen time.
Also any news on a Samsung update to the camera, it sucks at low light conditions

If you plan on flashing rooms you might as well use cf auto root since a custom recovery or room will trip your knox counter anyway. As for your battery life, something seems a bit wrong. I use mine quite heavily and I cam easily get a day from it.

What is cf auto root?
I'm on stock rooted only. Cf auto root is a file designed by chainfire to root the note 3 among other devices. Google it. You need the files for hltetmo.

So Cf installs a rooted stock ROM that doesn't trigger Knox? I'm guessing the lte thing you mentioned only works for rooted devices? And that it will work on Metro, my phone is not unlocked bur obviously works flawlessly on Tmobile.

Here's my current thought process on the warranty matter:
I literally just got my note 3 a few hours ago, but already the bloat is making me scathingly angry. So my choices are....root (vega) and do nothing, say screw it and do whatever I want and lose warranty, or....do nothing.
I'm trying to picture scenarios in my head where I would have to use my warranty (I also have Jump!). I can't think of any short of: my charger port stops working, or I bust the screen. But at that point, I'd probably just run over it with my car, pay the insurance deductible and get a new one. I'm not thrilled at the prospect of paying that deductible, but I'm currently less thrilled about putting up with Bloatwiz.
I haven't taken the plunge yet, but if you can think of other good reasons not to go ahead and trip knox and enjoy the beautiful bloat-free ROMs they have here, please let me know.

So this my question where I cant find a clear answer to. If I flash custom roms it trips the KNOX counter and lose warranty right. Does that mean I cant get a new note 3 from my tmobile insurance? I mean if I can flash roms but I am still able to get a new note 3 through my insurance then its a no brainer for me, which warranty is if you have phone defects and software issues which im sure custom roms can fix all that. But I just want to know if flashing custom roms voids the insurance through my t-mobile? cause I wouldnt mind paying the deductible

sometimes they just put insurance since its a new phone. But most of the time they ask you if you want insurance, its an option. You can pay 10 bucks more a month for the insurance if not you don't have to but wont have insurance. If you just got the phone I sugget you call customer service(611) and ask if he put insurance if not ask them to put the insurance on the acct.

Well I looked at my plan information and it says I have jump bundle which includes protection from damage theft and loss ... And my total bill says 70$... but it's weird Because my total due is 89.50$...I'm not used to paying that much for a no contract plan. .. but phone is worth it. .. Thanks for info

Yeah thats how much it usually is 70 bucks. But if you haven't payed the phone off completely you pay like 20 bucks a month till the phone is payed off or have the option to turn in you're phone for a newer one like the s5 when it comes out, that's like the whole reason for the JUMP. But yeah the phone is worth it, it will be more worth it if I can find out flashing a custom rom won't affect my insurance plan on my acct.

LOL how are you guys okay with losing your samsung warranties. I paid 665 for my phone so I am paranoid. Do y'all have another coverage that you use? If so I need some recommendations.
So if I don't want to trip KNOX there is only one root option?

To answer your question there Edo, some of as such as myself are microelectronics gurus, and tinkerers, so were most likely going to take our phone apart anyway so Warranty=POOF, some of us also own devices that we either bought or bartered for on craigslist, so to be honest, some of them may not be what you would call "legally aquired" and i dont necessarily mean that any one of us stole the device, what i mean is it could be stolen and we may have bought it that way, (i honestly cant say i support that, but i cant turn away a good deal sometimes)**I KNOW ITS WRONG PLEASE DONT HATE ME** and others such as myself, bought a device like my Tmobile note 3 that was blacklisted for non payment because whoever owned it previously didnt pay the bill, but has no clue on how to unlock/root/rom a phone and have it currently unlocked on Straight Talk with AT&T sim, usually if its blacklisted with AT&T, it will still work on their towers, you just cant call AT&T and add it to your account, you can only put your sim in, 9 times out of 10 when its blacklisted from T-Mobile, you cant use it on their network wether its simple mobile, solavei or any tmobile tower using service, because the device will be declined for registration on their network. However for AT&T its nice to know a friend that can unblacklist phones
but ya, most of us dont care about warranty, but there are a great deal of us here that do at the same time

Replacing Phone (With KNOX_WARRANTY)

Alright, so one of my buddies that works at T-Mobile, he Claims that as long as your phone is on Stock (Or looks like Stock) you should be able to turn your phone in for a Replacement or towards a different phone with Jump.
Obviously the phone I will be attempting to trade in has its Knox_Warranty flag at 0x1
I am going to try this tomorrow with one of my S4's that I unrooted today and back to 4.3 Stock. Anyone that has been curious on Replacement or upgrading with Jump etc, I should find out tomorrow hopefully. Wish me luck.
I will post results when I get back!
I wouldn't worry. I did a warranty exchange cause the back camera stopped working. All I did was Odin back to stock.

I have a friend who works at a store, I asked him if they are told to look for anything (customization, etc) or even check the bootloader.
He said the only thing they are told to look for is water damage, other than that they don't care. All they do when you Jump is send the phone back and i'm assuming TM just erases everything and resets the device before sending it out as a refurb one.
Just upgraded my phone, no problems, you're good to go

Are you saying, I could return my phone on GE for my jump upgrade and it will be accepted? [emoji33][emoji53]

I'm actually glad to hear this. I may go and flash the latest bootloader so I can have everything up to date.
Just to make sure, if knox IS tripped, it does not effect the status of your warranty through T-Mobile? Meaning if something were to go wrong with my phone I won't have any issues getting a warrant replacement?

I mean I don't know the specifics, i'm sure if you actually asked T-Mobile if it voids the warranty they would say yes, all i'm saying is if you take the phone to use the Jump program they don't even look at the bootloader, most of those guys don't even know how to get into Download Mode let alone check it.
I would say No I don't think you would have a problem, but you never know, the decision is up to you.

To confirm what you said earlier, what T Mobile is doing is taking your used phone and doing a complete factory refurb on it. That means a total wipe of the entire memory and a clean now install, as well as replacing worn out body panels like a cracked glass or scratched up plastic peices, etc.
Doing this the way a factory refurb does it that will wipe out Knox and flash counters and custom ROMs and all that jazz. They have equipment that will do what Odin can't. So they don't care.
If you do get a T Mobile store rep who does check the bootloader and makes a big deal out of the Knox flag, just take your phone to another T Mobile store. Or come back to that one the next day and talk to someone else. 9 out of 10 store clerks are not phone nerds like us. They are people with minimal phone training just working a retail sales job. If you get get the 1 phone nerd, another store will have 4 guys who don't even know what a bootloader is.
Once T Mobile takes the phone from you and processes the exchange, they cannot come back later and claim that it doesn't qualify. If they did you can just say you have no idea what they are talking about and their rep inspected prior to the exchange so something must have happened after it left your possession.

Probably won't. You should be able to still send it in for a replacement and get a different model back.
@LoopDoGG79 - Yup I got a different phone via jump so you should be good to go

Thanks. I asked in here because two T-Mobile Reps told me if the warranty is void on the phone, then they cannot honor the jump program. And seeing as they are accepting knox tripped devices for the jump program, it seems like knox does not void your warranty.. which makes me like Samsung even more (and T-Mobile)

Tmobile Store Checks For Root?

Hey guys, so I just went to a tmobile store to trade my phone in on the Jump Program and the associate said I'll be right back I have to scan your ID and hook your phone up to my computer for a second. He returned a moment later saying that my phone was not eligible to trade in because his computer said my phone had been rooted or jail broken. He asked if I had rooted it and I lied and said no. Now I didn't remove the root or TWRP from my phone because I never ever had them check all I did was restore my TWRP backup I took of stock when I first rooted my device. I am baffeled. I had no clue they were even doing this now. Anyone have any experience with this? I am going home to completely unroot and then go to a different store and try again. Are the carriers getting this smart now? I searched but hadn't found any similar experiences

Interesting. Was your Knox tripped as well?
The phone rooted or not shows with "MyTmobile" app under "device management". You will see a warning about the device is no longer secure. So yes, Tmobile knows. TWRP tripped the Knox warranty to 0x1. So unless you could find some unexpirienced csr even the warranty is voided.
Some say it doesn't matter but it does now for Tmobile.

Yes they do have system apps that spy on device status and some other thing but that's another story. Its not just their apps but the system apps located in the app manager under all apps. You should notice that there are 3 apps(system that will auto start even if force closed and can not be disabled/removed unless super user access. Also log you GPS coordinates and more. Should notice a jump in CPU and mabile data usuage upon unlock/lock and power on/off/reboot. Logging with/out data enabled. And funniest is ota patches for tether exploits or data hack/mods but still not chance of getting a simple android update ota lmao. As for warranty least jump/replacement so far hasent effected it on me end probably because how much their making on these phones now since the manufacturers been cut out lol. Could change I'd flash the ota before either jumping or replacements is possible.
Forced me to root.
Right, of course, TWRP tripped Knox. So they're checking, be advised. Root only without tripping and don't run a custom recovery.

Was able to replace my note other day but had to install Ota and stock recovery. Side note I also downgraded back to Ota kk from lp no issues. Least this time. Set up was Ota this time. But on note 3 had custom rom lp but had hidden su binary temp, and hid su and other apps from being seen by Android via search bar and install devices. Oh and never had installed/updated or enabled any tmobile Knox or lookout apps. Device status stayed official offlinedevice) and online under device status. Even with xposed installed(status fix) no issues. But again have to hide stuff and never allow their Spyware aka device manager(the main issue) lookout kies and knox. Can try and see if u downgrading from lp to fix/reset knox. Since then system updated and noticed harder to keep them from spying.
Ps never do the device diagnostics. Smh data mining with a pinch of Spyware lol. Still track your things when you opt out but least your have a legal way to sue if we get chance. Opting out don't mean crap sadly. Thought Google put an end to bloat ware and mucking up android after they released lollipop. But ig we still can dream for that day
Ps Ps twrp was issue for knox being tripped people lol is when you root device and/or install rom/recovery. Thank Sammy for charging 600 or 800 then voiding warranty when you do decide to root device(I did simply to fix stuff broken in lp and the ton of cap Sammy messed up or deleted)

Yes, Knox was tripped but that wasn't the issue. I ended up calling my friend who works in a T-Mobile store and explained the issue to him. He said " yeah we have a computer in the back that we can hook your phone up to and check if your rooted or jail broken but I have never heard of anyone actually using it! He said to remove root and custom recovery and go to his store. He said they won't check at my store but just do it to be safe. So I went home and odin flashed back to stock and went to his store. His store did it in 10 minutes no problem. They didn't even take it into the back like they did at the other store.
Lesson is that it depends on what store you go to. They have the capability to check but if they do or not depends on the store. Also the guy at the original store said that his machine would know if it was rooted even if it was undone. Don't know if this is true or he was bluffing lol. Just wanted to share my experience with the community.

Umm, first things first, never let anyone take your cellphone out of your sight to "check" it. I don't care if you have nothing to hide on that device, that is not proper procedure for any cell phone store. That dude was most likely looking for nudes on your phone while "in the back", and if there were any, you can be sure they're now in his possession. Not to mention he probably read through most of your texts, since that's where the nudes would most likely be.

Thanks for the concern But I was going to tmobile with the intent of jumping to another phone so I had already factory reset to wipe all my data before going to the store. This is my regular practice.

That's all well and fine, but it doesn't change the fact that they should never have taken the phone "in the back" out of your sight for any reason. The time I Jump'd a phone, they gave me my new device and a padded envelope to send in my trade-in, they never took my old device from my possession.
This is new, never happen to me, I just go and trade for new devices. I guess it's difference now.

Debating

I'm debating on rooting and custom recovery my s6.
Other sprint users, how is your experience with this?
There are two questions that you need to think about:
1) Do you use Samsung Pay? If you root, you will lose the ability to use this for all time. That is the impact of tripping Knox, pretty much everything else can be worked around.
2) Are you comfortable with using Odin for your updates? If you install a custom recovery, TWRP, you lose that ability.
If you don't care about Samsung Pay and are okay with doing your own updates, then by all means Root.
So I can update with twrp?
I'm also worried that when i go to upgrade sprint won't let me because of Knox. Should i worry? Anyone ever traded in a phone with tripped knox

To your first question, upgrades can be done by returning to stock using Odin, then reinstalling Root and Recovery. The whole process generally takes less than half an hour, but you don't get the updates quite as fast.
I have returned phones with Knox tripped to the store, even gotten replacements when there was a hardware issue. But when my phone reaches end of life these days, I sell it on Swappa. More money!
If its under warranty then dont if its finished go ahead u will love ur s6
