So my big gripe with the M8 was always having to hit the power button to turn the screen off - and I hate the power button location. It's hard to hit.
I was told to root the device, install gravity box so I can double tap the status bar and turn the screen off.
Thanks to a recommendation by jadaress1, this app fixes the problem entirely:
Screen Off and Lock: Screen Off and Lock
I put an icon right next to where my thumb rests on the main screen. A quick tap turns it right off without any reaching needed at all. What a lifesaver.

So what's the name of the app?

It's called screen off and lock. It's in the play store, I've been using it on all my phone's and it works perfectly.

Thank you. That app is awesome. With go Launcher I set double tab to call that app. So now double will turn on or off the screen.

I use lock screen by wongqi . It it's much easier to install if you don't want to use it. It is also very straight forward. Tap the app then the phone goes to lock screen mode.

I've been using Knock Lock - you can set an empty area of any width and/or height on your home screen (even if you are widgeted out there you can select space between widgets too) to respond to a double tap to lock the phone and turn off screen. Working well for me and I like it works the same as waking the phone up.
I use Nova Prime along with screen off and I can double tap and turn screen off

Ok first view my screenshot at the bottom of this post.
My current setup:
LauncherPRO, status bar toggled hidden, black background, and custom dock icon images, black (so they appear hidden)
What I want:
Ideally, I want NO dock icons.
I use google gesture search for everything. There is an extra app that makes google gesture pop up when I long-press the search button, so i'd like to remove that icon as well.
Please help with any ideas!
Also I am liking the idea of invisible widgets.
I want to have secret ones, where I scroll left-side to open x app, or pinch and zoom one area of the screen to toggle wifi, etc.

Bump.
Essentially I want no homescreen.
Using the search button long-press shortcut to gesture search is all I need.
I might throw a hidden lock on there as well.
I want it to appear that my device is powered down to the average user.

I use Go launcher and Swipe pad. Nothing else on my homescreen. Toggling statusbar (swipe up or down) and no icons in my on my taskbar. I double tap to get to my app drawer. I use swipe pad for quick access to what I use most. I like it no one can figure out my phone.

3. Select Hybrid Properties

6. Click Apply
7. Exit to home screen
8. Press and drag finger up
WoW! I think I actually might like this!
FYI: AOKP MR3 just released a way to hide the nav bar and a quick swipe up enables the nave bar to reappear. Just like WebOS!
My problem with PIE is when I have it set to either right side or bottom (easiest to access) it cuts off half of my backspace button on my keyboard as it is reserved for swiping in and PIEing from the right or its hard to click my space bar or punctuation marks if I have it set to the bottom.
Is there anyway to avoid this? Like preferably have it set to force swiping from the bezel, rather than allowing a majority of the finger to be on the screen when swiping up. I've messed with all of the launch setting sizes to no avail.
I have the same problem with my keyboard when pie is set to the bottom. I do not know of any fix. In a few days or so there will be a new release of PA with some impressive fixes that they have done. Take a look at they're (PA) Google+ page.

What about on the right as well? I'm actually running Xenon HD on a recommendation (there's soooo many roms idk what to do with myself) so I'm not sure if the updates will run through to xenon right away :/ might have to try paranoid android then haha

It happens to me when set on normal also.
Just figured out what a nice difference this is making. It can help a lot if you text a lot.
I use it after texting and gtalking and Internet browsing. Idea is cut off the last 30 seconds of screen on time when you set the phone down it stick in pocket, by tapping the widget.
This way you can set screen timeout to 2m if you want for reading (I never need more than that for interacting with a book to change pages) but get the benefit of having a super short timeout like 15 seconds.

Oh and pressing the power button wears it out and is not ergonomic like tapping.
Why would you need this if you can just press the power button to turn off the screen? You're pressing something either way. Makes no sense. Now if you have a broken power button, then that's a different story.

Personally I use screen off, I've tried the OP and others but didn't like em as much as this one. It uses the search captive search button to turn off the screen

Yes forgot to mention this was the main reason. I was paranoid about killing the power button. Pressing the power button wears it out and is not ergonomic like tapping.
Can any one suggest app that prevents the usage of the home button? It's sometimes difficult to press, specifically when driving or in a hurry.
Some app that simulates de recent apps function (long home button press) and the home function itself.
Thank you very much.
If you are rooted, I would suggest using the Xposed Framework with the Xposed Additions module. Within that, you can map your buttons to do whatever you want, including disabling the home button and reassigning the home function to any other button.
If rooted install exposed Framework and Gravity box. All the functions you are wanting.

Gravitybox is a great all-in-one, but if I understand the OP's original question, it won't do what they were requesting because the only home button remapping is for long-press. Xposed Additions is more specific in what it does and gives a lot more options for remapping the buttons. I actually use both Gravitybox and Xposed Additions since they both have features that work really well, but not necessarily all by themselves individually.
Swipe Home Button
I use "Swipe Home Button". Works great. Just a small swipe from down to up brings me back to the homescreen. A larger swipe gives me the active apps.
This app is perfect! Thank you, poemadevil!
Do you think it can reduce the battery life?
Also, there's an xposed module that replaces the menu button with a recents button

GravityBox has option to turn on Pie Control.
It's like soft navigation button in shape of arc, consist of home, recent, back, option button, or any custom function as you wish.
You can activate by swipe from any edge of the screen.

I'm new to Nova Launcher, and to be honest 3rd party launchers in general. And the only question I have so far while using Nova is that once I'm in my app drawer hitting my home button closes the app drawer and zooms me out to see all screens I have with the option of wallpaper, widget or app to add to a screen. Rather than just taking me to my homepage like the home button does from any other screen.
Is this normal? is there a way to have hitting home from the app drawer just take me to my homepage?
You can turn that off in Nova settings. Its in gesture and inputs

Thanks all, that did it. :good:
Actually, in doing that I lose the option to double tap the home button to bring up those options such as apps, widgets and wallpaper. Looking under gestures though the toggle is on that says "return to default page on first tap, action on second" but there is no thing from the second.
The only time it seems to work as the settings suggest is if you have more than 1 screen. Once I created a blank screen to the right of my default page then it worked as it should. With just one it doesn't.

This is how I have it set. Edit: it works better if you set home button to go to default page
Well my initial problem was fixed by setting the home button to the default screen. However if you have only 1 screen you then lose the ability to add screens and widgets, even if the toggle is 'on' that says double tapping the home button will still give you that option. But once you add a second blank screen that toggle switch enabling the action of double tapping the home button then works. So it has to be a bug, I just don't know if their aware of it or not because I suspect most people use more than 1 screen and have never noticed it doesn't work with 1.
