Need to know... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just wanted to ask those in the know, if my friend has an htc evo, which has probably the worst reception ever, can i change her modem, without rooting the phone? or is there anything else i can do to fix her horrible reception? thanks in advance.

what does it take to get an answer in this forum? are you telling me nobody in this entire forum of the evo, knows anything about the evo? really?

It takes providing some details. The Supersonic has some of the best reception of any device I've owned, so something doesn't sound right.
Also I don't know what you mean by "change her modem." Sounds like a non-HTC thing.

i have a galaxy s4, and i can change my modem to one of 50 different ones. of course my s4 is rooted and i use a custom rom. but i know very little about the evo. it 's my friends phone. and she can't get through a single call without the call being dropped. so, i thought perhaps htc has almost as many options as a galaxy, and i could choose a different modem to flash. but i guess the htc family is just stuck with what you have. is this true?

It's typically best to be on the lastest firmware package for HTC devices. Without having more information about what the device is running and whether it's even up to date, it's really difficult to be able to offer solutions.

Ok. So i checked for a firmware update, and there wasn't one. Then i checked for other updates, and there were none. But her phone is on Android 4.1.1. Now I know how to update A Samsung, but not a HTC. So is there anything special to bring her phone up to at least 4.3, or even 4.4?

What device does she have? The EVO 4G only has an official ROM going up to Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread).
I think we definitely need more information on the device to be sure how to proceed.

That means you're in the wrong forum .
P. S. Check out "NOTE 2" at the bottom of this post. It's the Android 4.3 update for the device. It includes updated firmware so it might help with the reception issues.
One thing to try also is to make sure the back cover (that covers where the SD card is inserted) is on completely and tightly, and none of the prongs are bent or broken. That will also affect reception.

ok. i will check it out. thanks so much.
update: the download link for the android 4.3 update does not work. i get a 404 directory not there, error message. is there another one you know of. i am so unknowledgeable about this phone, i just don't want to screw it up by thinking i have the right dl, when i might not. so would rather defer to someone who knows about these phones, such as yourself. thanks.
also, the "note 2" link, shouldn't be used until the 4.3 update, or does it matter?

Install HTC Sync Manager on the PC, make sure USB Debugging is enabled, and run the RUU.exe as administrator. If you're using a Windows 8.1 PC, there will likely be issues, and you'll have to use an alternative method which will be more complex.

That stuff should be backed up to the Google account, or an Exchange account if applicable. I've never used the HTC software so I know nothing about how it works.

Received Desire today but pre-release software installed

Hi all, I am new here.
I had my new HTC Desire from T-Mobile delivered today. It's a good phone but I have a problem. They sent a phone with pre-release software installed. Every screen has a watermark stating "HTC Confidential" and numbers.
Any ideas of what I can do? I can't find the official rom anywhere to download. I phoned T-Mobile who couldn't do anything as they are out of stock. It was suggested I phoned back on Monday. Very helpful
I know from hotukdeals that there are at least 2 others with this problem and the lady at T-Mobile said there may have been a batch sent out incorrectly.
Here's the softwares versions if you are interested:
Firmware = 2.1
Baseband Version = 32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_
Kernal Version = 2.6.29-9882e023 htc-kernal and18-2#1
Build Number = 1.01.110.4 CL131766 test-keys
Software Number = 1.01.110.4
Browser version = WebKit 3.1
Thanks for any help.
(had to remove at symbol after kernal as forum won't allow it)
Take it back ASAP.
Meanwhile, just play with it.
It's not your fault and T-Mobile have to replace it.
I believe you can't upgrade the phone even if you did have the ability to download a new firmware.
Have you had a look at the contents of the SD card to see what goodies you mich have been accidentally given?
If your recovery img accepts files signed with test keys, this could be really good news

No didn't think of that, will have a look and report back!
Maybe being stupid but I can't see where you go to browse the SD card?
Either plug your handset into a pc and browse it via your pc or take the sdcard out and put it into a card reader in your pc
If your on msn, PM me your details if you get stuck

Good thinking. Got Astro. Nothing of any note on there.
Have you checked your bootloader version and info? You never know you could have an S-OFF variant
I would laugh it he found some interesting information about either HTC or Tmobile on this phone

I hope so! OP, please make sure you report back here what you find - you may end up being a hero!
Check your bootloader. If it's S-OFF, party, for you will be the only one with a rooted Desire, and then use a RUU to update to a production version.
Does your keyboard have the speech to text button? If so, can you see if it works? I've just noticed that some of the older reviews on Youtube clearly show the button while it looks as though more recent roms have disabled it. From what I gather, this is because Google wants to keep this exclusive to the Nexus for the time being.
It would be cool if you have a rom which has this...
If your interested in installing a new HTC rom onto your device give me a quick PM

Wouldn't have a clue how to do that. Let me know how and I'll take a look.
Here is how to find out
1.Turn off your phone
2. Hold down the volume up/down button. and while holding this down press the power button.
3. release all buttons when the phone turns on.
If you write down all the text that you see at the top left of the screen and post it here we will be able to tell you

Orange Network locked unlock sim after OTA update

Hello,
Need some help.
Unbranded my desire today which went well. It asked me if I wanted to update the software OTA which I clicked yes to. This is where it all went wrong, phone now comes up with Network locked unlock sim.
Can anyone help me get round this, I read a thread a couple of days ago where someone had the same problem but I can't for the life of me find it. Any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Hi there mate. I dont know the answer to your problem but can say that no one else has ever posted that exact error. Can you confirm the EXACT wording of the error and and numbers it may throw. If its already correct (including any punctuation) it seems you have a very unique problem.

It may not have been here but I think it was.
Basically it was a branded Orange Desire.
After much reading I decided that I wanted to get of all the Orange stuff that comes bundled and cannot be removed.
I followed a guide to de-brand the phone which worked perfectly. When I first turned the phone on and checked the software update it said 1 update was available, I chose to download and install the update. When I checked the phone version it was 2.1update 1 (I think).
Turned the phone off and on again and went back into the software update and was offered another update which I assumed was Froyo, chose to download and install that via wifi. Everything seemed to work but when the phone rebooted it came up with the following message "SIM network unlock PIN" there is no other error code and it wants an 8 digit code.
Called Orange and played dumb and they said that they would send me a new phone but I've told them to hold off for now.
Thank in advance.
Hmmm looks like you may have flashed a Branded ROM for another provider which I didn't thik had any effect on provider locks. But in the lack of help from anywhere else you could always try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748105 which is what I did on my Virgin Mobile UK Branded and locked phone. SOrry I cant help further
You could buy an unlock code online..That should sort it.
It looks like your using an incompatible radio. Which version are you using? To find out go to settings - about phone then it should be baseband version?

Got a fully up to date Droid, didn't have to pay Orange for the Network unlock code either lol
really pleased mate well done! Its scary **** when you may have to pay out for the bugger lol
good advice in this thread
Got it up and running yet?
If not, take the SIM out and find the software version in settings. If it's something like:
x.xx.405.x
then you have an unbranded ROM which most people have had issues with with Orange phones. You could try updating to Froyo if the OTA update is still available as that should flash a working radio or just buy an unlock code for about a tenner that would be best in the long run.
Just to let you know that the latest radio is compatible with orange (I have it) its 5.09.00.20. Shouldn't sim lock your phone. Good luck. Hope you get it sorted.

This post says that he sorted it.
i am sure its an incorrect radio take your sim out and you should have access , i ended up rooting the device using revoke one click method very easy just follow carfully then i installed a custom rom and a new radio
this is the orange one for bootloader 0.75 "update-bravo-radio-32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11-signed" all working great the rom i used was "Official_FroYo_Market_fixed"
hope this helps actually just upgraded radio to 5.09 with no problem
Yeah got this sorted peeps.
Didn't mess around looking up radio's or anything like that.
This is what happened to me.
1. Debranded Orange Desire from 2.1update1 to Generic 2.1
2. Upgraded OTA from Generic 2.1 to 2.1update1
3. Was offered and accepted update to Froyo
4. Got error saying SIM locked unlock sim
5. Put Froyo ROM onto SD card and loaded it via recovery
6. Enjoyed having the last laugh over Orange technical support
Thank you to jamesmcuk who's post (I think it was 4 or 5) resolved my problem, would suggest the same process to anyone else who had the same problem that I had.
On another note, how do I check what radio version I have and if it's upto date?

I'm having the same problem with my htc incredible. I have 3G but can't make calls or send texts (can't receive calls or texts either). My phone is rooted and i had the evervolv rom installed on it for about 2 months now. I tried flashing another rom but I have the same problem (tried salvage-mod). I'm wondering if this had anything to do with some apps i removed (I used titanium backup to remove evervolvs email app, the evervolv browswer and evernolv news/weather). The phone worked fine for 3 or 4 days after i removed these apps and then this happened. But I don't think this is related but just thought i would mention it.

I hate to be redundant but have you tried calling *228 and reprogramming the phone? If so and it didn't help anything, could you post a little bit of information about your phone? We know you are on evervolv and rooted and I'm guessing you're using clockworkmod recovery but what is your baseband/radio? Any other relevant information you can think of would also be helpful so someone can help you
Yeah I am running CWR.
Baseband: 2.15.00.07.28
Kernel version: 2.6.37.4-cyanogenmod+ [email protected] #27
Build number: GRJ22
I tried called *228 and reprogramming but it hasn't helped. I was thinking about going back to a stock rom and calling verizon.
When I try making a call, the green bars become grayed out. I will hear about 3 or 4 rings before I get a message from Verizon saying my call cannot be processed and they give me the following code: 11 switch? 179-3

You need to call verizion and have them reprovision your phone. I'm 90% positive its a problem on there end. I would go back to a stock rom first (RUU), but keep s-off or you will be in for a lot of work rerooting.

well, I don't think that this is necessarily the problem but you might want to consider upgrading your radio. It is easily flashable through hboot and can considerably improve your call quality. The one you're using now was designed for and released with froyo and when you downgraded to root you also downgraded the radio so perhaps that is a problem?
You can get the radios from this address:
http://dinc.does-it.net/Radios/
You probably want 2.15.10.07.07 as it is the newest radio that was designed for the dinc. (released with gingerbread 2.3.4)
Just make sure you check the MD5 before flashing because a bad radio file could brick your device.
EDIT: cmlusco is right, that is what you really need to do. I always avoid going to verizon myself because I have no interest in them trying to tell me how i somehow did something wrong by rooting it.
What do you mean by check the MD5?

I still maintain that like cmlusco said you should go ahead and RUU back to stock and talk to verizon about it but it is still good to know what an MD5 sum is.
An MD5 Sum is a string of numbers that is unique to every file. You check the MD5 sum to make sure it matches the original MD5 Sum which is usually provided by the developer or host of the file. For example, in the case of the radio:
if you go to this page you will see two files: http://dinc.does-it.net/Radios/2.15.10.07.07/
One is called PB31IMG.zip and the other is called PB31IMG.zip.md5
If you click on PB31IMG.zip it will download the file to your computer and you can then transfer that file to the root of your SD card to be flashed.
If you click on PB31IMG.zip.md5 you will see a string of numbers/letters which make up the MD5 sum for the PB31IMG.zip file. For this file it is:
617E6969061DCBC3CA613FA6D02565F0
You then want to make sure that after you download the file or even better when it has been placed on your phone that the file has not been corrupted during downloading or during transfer to your phone. This can be done by using an MD5 checker which can be downloaded from many places online for your pc and there are several MD5 checkers available in the market. You basically just want to make sure the string of numbers found online on the dev site or the host site is the same as the one generated by the checker
So i tried the radio and it didnt help. I'm going to do the RUU now. Is this the link for that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227279

Should be able to use any of them. However they will prompt you with ota updates after you boot to get to either 4.08.605.2 or 4.08.605.15 if its been pushed to you yet, or mabey both.
So i flashed the RUU and called verzion. they refreshed something on their end and now i can make calls and send texts. thanks for all your help
The unrevoked3 recovery flash tool wont root my phone. Would going back to an older RUU like 3.26.605.1 help?
I made sure security was off (S-OFF) when i did the flash with the first RUU. Also hboot still says S-OFF so i dont think this is the problem.

FYI, for anyone that is reading this i finally figured it out, the only app i could get to work is "WiFi Tether Router" in the Play Store
it does cost 1.49 however its better then 10 a month
Notes:
Go through all the settings and set them up for Method use "3 - HostApd"
Play Store: WiFi Tether Router

I've tried downloading and installing the drivers manually and nothing seems to allow the app to recognize the phone is connected, I tried 3 different PCs with the same result. I app loops between connect and disconnect your phone.
Here are the details:
Model number: SPH-L520
Android version: 4.2.2
Baseband version: L520VPUAMK2
Kernel version: 3.4.0-2054908
Build number: JDQ39.L520VPUAMK2
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

If you can access download mode, it's nothing serious.
Head into http://sammobile.com or http://samsung-updates.com and look for your phone's model name. They have firmware for pretty much any device so hopefully they have some for yours.
So the only thing that freaks me out is all these region codes... I dont see one for USA...Now what lol

I have the exact same phone and the exact same problem. Kies (via USB) recognizes there is a SPH-L520 connected but won't actually connect to it. I asked Samsung for the appropriate drivers (none are listed on the webpage for the device) but Samsung says there aren't any drivers for the SPH-L520. Kies does connect my SPH-L520 and my PC via WiFi, though. And, despite having enabled Developer Mode and USB Debugging, Kingo fails every time. Any ideas?
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
It is also where Kingo originally got their method from, I wouldn't trust them too much if I were you. The best thing about the above method is, if it can't root the phone, it won't touch anything. If it can - it won't trigger the Knox. I tried on my JB 9190 and works. Unless you have a locked bootloader... that would complicate things.
hello guys is there a way to unlock samsung gs4 sprint to gsm been searching around cant find a good answer cos the phone seems to have a sim slot. also can it be flashed to cdma if the gsm potion wont work. thanks

If you're on NA7 as a few of us seem to be, you're screwed I believe unless someone comes up with a recovery we can flash through odin or kies. I would like to be wrong about that, but I haven't found otherwise.

That's your firmware version.
Go to Settings -> About Device. Last 3 characters of your version

System Settings - > About device - > Software version.
L520VPUANA7
It's the version of software we're on. Still JB 4.2.2, but the last Ota under the guise of updating Spark also included Knox which is not allowing us to root through the Saferoot method.

The stinkers! I thought I read that Sprint was coming out with an upgrade to JB4.3 for us S4 Mini users, but it hasn't been pushed to my phone yet like the WiFi calling upgrade was. Think that might alleviate the Knox-blocks problem if/when it occurs?

Why would that alleviate it? Knox is here to stay. Very doubtful any update is going to remove it. Lately it's all about locking things down.

How to get most up to date Rom on my Phone?

Hello,
Got an HTC one M9 today. Since it has the stock rom on it, I wanted to go directly to the current version and flash all the old data out (if thats possible). So I visited the HTC-Support ROM download page which's link I cant post because I'm a too new user to this board.
There, I downloaded this (Under the "Unlocked/Developer" category): "HTC One M9 4.23.617.1".
When I start this, it recognizes my phone right and has a button "Update" for me, where I'm already wondering why is that. I want to flash my Phone with the current version, why should I bother updating anything? If you can point me where I could rather get the tools and instructions to do that (flashing with current version), I would be grateful.
However I tried Updating, and after a quick reboot the Updateprogram tells me "Error 132: Signature-Error".
It says I should get the right Update-Utility and try again. How is that not the right one?
Please help.
Greetings,
Ravior

Check out the readme thread, specifically the section on RUUs.
As for doing OTA updates versus RUU, the advantage of OTA updates is that your phone settings and data are preserved. RUU installs wipe and reset your phone to factory default.

Thank you for pointing me there. After going through much of the information stated there (In the readme thread) I was able to combine the things that happened and why they did so.
In my case, I was trying to use a RUU for 4.x versions on a phone with 3.x installed, which simply isnt supported.
So this means I have to update all the way to 4.x to install the most up to date ruu and then I can flash the device on that version.
I hope they have good reason for not letting us simply flash the current version, since its very troublesome to update all the way through but well...
Thank you!

Please tell me about the security aspects of the mechanic that forces you to update step by step rather than installing full images of the current version. Just look at computer operating systems. Do you always install f.e. Windows XP and then upgrade through vista and windows 7 to windows 10?

Well, since you didn't install anything but bought the phone with a pre-installed OS that metaphora doesn't suit at all. Compare it with a computer that you buy and that has windows 8 pre-installed. Are you able to directly install the latest windows 10 version with all current KB-updates installed? No, you aren't. You need to install windows 10 and then to install all missing KBs via the windows update function.
Since you seem to like them, here's another metaphora: Do you keep your flat's/house's lock and keys if you know that thiefs own a copy of the key? No, you probably change the lock and the key. That's what HTC did with the encryption keys.
And no one said that you need to flash every OTA up to the latest firmware of your SKU. Depending on your current firmware, you might be able to directly install the needed 4.x OTA and then you can flash a 4.x RUU (which might not even be needed since not every SKU received more than one 4.x firmware iteration, yet). And even if you aren't on the latest 3.x firmware for your SKU you only need to flash one RUU more (the one for the latest 3.x firmware of your SKU). All in all the whole flashing/installing won't take longer than one hour. A RUU gets flashed within less than 5 minutes. And the longest OTA installation that I faced with the M9 took half an hour and that was the update from Android L to Android M.
You see, there is absolutely no reason to get het up that much. So please, calm down a little. XDA isn't the place for public rants. That's what you can use facebook, twitter, G+ or reddit for.

Sorry, but I dont think that smartphones are that different from pcs. I think being forced to install as many tools and getting to know all the matter shouldnt be that much; it could be much easier. I think most of the stuff is just that complicated because this way its better to make money than having it in a simple and easy way, like one ROM for every country in the world. For example, I can easily create my custom windows 7 installation media with any updates and additions I would like and install it on every pc in the world thats not too old.

And now I would like to ask you me how you type such long texts on your smartphone
Android/Linux is not Windows. If you believe it or not, you can't compare a PC with a smartphone.
And there are custom made firmware packs for this phone, as well.
In addition, HTC won't read what you're writing here so complaining about their decisions on xda is completely useless. If you still think that it's necessary then do so on one of the websites I mentioned in my last post.
