Notes:
Go through all the settings and set them up for Method use "3 - HostApd"

I've tried downloading and installing the drivers manually and nothing seems to allow the app to recognize the phone is connected, I tried 3 different PCs with the same result. I app loops between connect and disconnect your phone.
Here are the details:

Android version: 4.2.2
Baseband version: L520VPUAMK2

If you can access download mode, it's nothing serious.
Head into http://sammobile.com or http://samsung-updates.com and look for your phone's model name. They have firmware for pretty much any device so hopefully they have some for yours.
So the only thing that freaks me out is all these region codes... I dont see one for USA...Now what lol

I have the exact same phone and the exact same problem. Kies (via USB) recognizes there is a SPH-L520 connected but won't actually connect to it. I asked Samsung for the appropriate drivers (none are listed on the webpage for the device) but Samsung says there aren't any drivers for the SPH-L520. Kies does connect my SPH-L520 and my PC via WiFi, though. And, despite having enabled Developer Mode and USB Debugging, Kingo fails every time. Any ideas?
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
It is also where Kingo originally got their method from, I wouldn't trust them too much if I were you. The best thing about the above method is, if it can't root the phone, it won't touch anything. If it can - it won't trigger the Knox. I tried on my JB 9190 and works. Unless you have a locked bootloader... that would complicate things.
hello guys is there a way to unlock samsung gs4 sprint to gsm been searching around cant find a good answer cos the phone seems to have a sim slot. also can it be flashed to cdma if the gsm potion wont work. thanks

If you're on NA7 as a few of us seem to be, you're screwed I believe unless someone comes up with a recovery we can flash through odin or kies. I would like to be wrong about that, but I haven't found otherwise.

It's the version of software we're on. Still JB 4.2.2, but the last Ota under the guise of updating Spark also included Knox which is not allowing us to root through the Saferoot method.

The stinkers! I thought I read that Sprint was coming out with an upgrade to JB4.3 for us S4 Mini users, but it hasn't been pushed to my phone yet like the WiFi calling upgrade was. Think that might alleviate the Knox-blocks problem if/when it occurs?

Why would that alleviate it? Knox is here to stay. Very doubtful any update is going to remove it. Lately it's all about locking things down.

I sincerely apologize if this has been asked before. However, after lots of searching, I have been unable to find an answer anywhere.
I am more experienced with iDevices as opposed to Android. With Apple products, as long as the device is not factory unlocked, every time the firmware is flashed, the unlock process will need to be redone.
So, I have an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 which is unlocked via an unlock code, and I use it in the Caribbean. I'd like to update to the latest firmware (4.0.4 > 4.1.1) using Samsung Kies, on my desktop. Before I do so, I'd like to know will the phone remain unlocked after flashing the new firmware? Or will I need to unlock once again?
I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I'd just like to be precautious. Thanks for any help in advance.
P.S. My device is rooted. Will this affect the update?
I don't think the update will effect the unblocking....
But why update thru kies when the stock/rooted rooms are found here too??
Kies will have issues updating if your device is rooted.... So just flash the stock rooted images, via Odin program, here on XDA.
Here are the stock/rooted 4.1.1 ROMs with Odin program as well:

Sorry for the double post. However, just updating that I just successfully updated to a fresh install of 4.1.1 from 4.0.4, and my unlock is indeed still intact. So, anyone else who is a n00b like myself, and is worried of the same thing when updating, don't be.
Hello. I am new to samsung. It came from At&t and i unlocked it here in the philippines. And as ive checked the software it is still 4.0 and since i want to update the software it only says communication failed. May i ask if is it possible to update my s3 to the latest version? Im really desperate Thank yooooou.
A phone can be relocked once an unlock code has been entered but this only happens if the phone undergoes a repair and the IMEI is changed.
Also, just to calrify as the original responder has mentioned "blocking". A blocked phone is very different to one that is locked. This might confuse people but just to confirm, if you have a blocked phone, unlocking it won't help. A block is done at network level and stops the phone connecting to any network to make or receive a phone call. A lock is at phone level and simply limits the phone to working on one network only. A lock can be switched from on to off to allow it to work on all networks but a block can only be removed by the networks.

Any Linux Love?
Fortunately, I don't have Windoze installed on my system. Unfortunately, the only rooting methods I've stumbled across involve using a program that does not have a Linux port. Anyone know of any methods to root Sprint's Galaxy Tab 3 from a Linux OS? Odd that this isn't the standard, what with Android being Linux-based, and all.

I was looking to avoid virtualization when it comes to modifying the firmware of external devices. I've had mixed results pushing things to an old android phone from a virtual machine and would really much prefer a native solution. Though if that's all that's available, I guess I'll have to plug it in, cross my fingers, and hope that those bits are able to make it through the virtualization layer in one piece.
Thanks for your input, N00BY0815!

Running the app through a virtualized Windoze installation, the process is a bit trickier than that, but yes, once the virtual machine recognizes the device, the app should be able to root it. Like I said, I was just hoping for a native Linux method to avoid virtualization.

Guys, please assist or I`ll go mad in a minute and smash this crap with a hammer Wife got SGS S3 Mini/GT-i8190N. Don`t know what network it came from, but was not locked and came from UK.

How on earth I get it back to life? No hacks ever have been done to it. Google reveals huge amount of people having same problems - stuck at boot screen. Is that some kind of hardware issue with this model?
One of the solutions is to do factory reset - but how if I can`t get into the phone? I can get into ODIN mode, connect to ODIN, but I can`t download firmware as I don`t know what network phone came from or even it was sim ree(not locked to any).

Was there a box that the phone came in? Usually somewhere on that you can find something that looks like the software version that came on the phone originally. I know the standard S3 has that and I'll go out on a limb to assume that this one has it as well, if you have the box. Outside of that, not sure what else to tell you.
Good luck!

Hi,
To preface, I am new to Samsung devices. I have been using Huawei devices until recently when my work started paying for my cellphone.
I've seen a few discussions about rooting the SGH-i257 that inevitable lead to the instructions for the SGH-i257m or some other variation of the S4 mini. What I've noticed is that it inevitably falls to some issue with Knox. I'm wondering if anyone has had success specifically rooting this phone using one of the straightforward utilities (like oneclickroot) or some sort of convoluted process.
I'm completely aware that I can disable apps. However, I want to root my phone and have more control. It's similar to the idea of why drive a manual instead of an automatic. You interact more with the car.
Anyway, any input would be great.
EDIT:
I've stumbled upon SRSroot a few times. Is this a legit rooting tool?

I'm wondering if anyone has had success specifically rooting this phone using one of the straightforward utilities (like oneclickroot) or some sort of convoluted process.
I'm completely aware that I can disable apps. However, I want to root my phone and have more control. It's similar to the idea of why drive a manual instead of an automatic. You interact more with the car.
Anyway, any input would be great.
EDIT:
I've stumbled upon SRSroot a few times. Is this a legit rooting tool?

try www.towelroot.com (click the logo to download) it's legit and it doesn't trip knox, if it works...
I tried that a couple of times. I am assuming it has failed (though I could be wrong). I ran the application and it rebooted my phone.

I have the same phone and I have tried all the one click methods, programs, SRSroot, towelroot, saferoot, you name it I've tried it without success. I've been searching the same threads that lead to the same conclusion...there is a way to root (flash) the SGH-i257M (Canadian) but from what I've found is that no one knows if you'll lose any services or anything else if you root the U.S. AT&T phone with that method and there isn't a stock rom out for it yet, so if you flash it to a Canadian (m) model and don't like it or it doesn't have everything working right you're not able to revert back.
I'm am not an expert by no means, thats just my thoughts from what I've read.
Good luck on your quest - you can search my other posts for what I've learned - -

I followed the steps to root the SGH-i257. This process was not successful.
I will occasionally poke around here to see if something new manifests itself. Otherwise, I am probably going to wait a few months. I'm sure someone will figure out how to root the phone by then.

This worked for my device. Reboots into recovery and once done , you have a rooted phone. Towelroot someone mentioned works for 4.4.2, not for our jb 4.2.2.
Did you try Kingo or just selected mtp + adb and tried towelroot.

Sorry no input on your rooting issues, but
Could one of you fine folks post the build.prop from your AT&T stock Rom?
It would really help out trying to fix some cm10.2 connection issues. Thanks.

Let me know if I can help in any other ways.

Still no one able to crack the SGH-I257 AT&T phone? Just for fun I bought an identical used phone with a cracked screen off ebay for a few bucks, still works but will make an excellent gunny pig! Any serious devs interested in it??

I truly hope so! There are a lot of smart people on this forum that will eventually pick up the baton and roll with it. It's just a matter of when! Until then, I guess we'll just have to practice patience.

Hi to all
I have the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 bronze non Wi-Fi. the Tab is rooted and now that I want to update firmware to lollipop it says that my Tab has been altered.
My question is do I need to unroot to get the new firmware and if so how do I do this. All help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Paul
Non WiFi? They're all WiFi. :what:
I take it you're trying to ota. You can update via kies (smart switch) or use odin. The firmware is available at sammobile or Samsung updates or if you're lucky a fast mirror maybe posted here.

Don't waste your time, just use kies or update via Odin. They are both official methods.

Hi Sorry to be a pain but when I connect to Kies I get the message that my device is supported by Smart Switch. When I connect to Smart Switch I can't find how to update as it only gives me the choice to transfer data from either Apple, Blackberry or Nokia devices as in picture. When the device is rooted is not possible to do a factory reset.
Thanks Paul

If you have root or custom recovery you will not be able to update with smart switch you will have to download lolliepop firmware and use Odin to flash it.

Ok thanks for that. Is there a link for the download or is it against the rules to post links to official firmware.

Hi been away for a couple of weeks so first of all I would like to thank all that replied with suggestions.
Now I have downloaded the Lolipop file I have a couple of questions.
1) If I now update via Odin will this then make the tab unrooted again once the official Lollipop is loaded. The reason I ask this is because since rooting my device I cannot use my Sky Sports app or my Virgin Tv Anywhere app.
2) If the answer to question 1 is no, then how would I go about unrooting the Tab.
Thanks Paul
Yes, It will unroot your device.
Thanks for the quick reply.

It will unroot your device but it will NOT erase your data.
All user's data (settings, accounts, installed apps, files) will be preserved.

Ok thanks, will update hopefully sometime this weekend.

So I finally updated my tab tonight. Everything went smoothly, Checked software update and it says android 5.02 your device is up to date. Then the first problem I came across was that my Sky Sports app still says that it will not run on a rooted device. Do I need to do anything else to show this tab as non rooted. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Paul

You probably should have unrooted first as there will be some residual files in data. The sky sports app is quite clever at detecting root.
You probably just need to wipe data.

Please use my app Phone INFO ☆Samsung☆, and check for the 'Root Existence' info in the ANDROID tab to see if it shows Yes or No?
There are several ways to detect if the device was rooted. I'm not sure how the Sky Sports app works.
