[Q] CM/AOSP Camera Quality vs TouchWiz - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I'm debating whether to flash AOSP/CM.
Has anyone done any tests comparing the camera quality on the Android Stock roms VS original TouchWiz camera app?
I'm trying to examine the ups and downs of moving from original TouchWix roms to something more close to stock.
Camera quality is an important aspect to me.
Many thanks.

AOSP camera is pretty darn good, but I don't think it 100% comparable to Touchwiz. Why not try it and see if you like it.
I run AOSP because it is SOOO much faster then Touchwiz.

I'll go with AOSP, yes it's more faster and better

Aosp is better also they have a camera called snap, I found the download in the forums, picture quality is great, you can record video in 100fps in1080, no 4k tho, and no slowmo, if you find a slow no camera app for aosp please inform me

I've seen more great quality pictures on AOSP users too.

How is the CM10 camera so much better than the stock TouchWiz camera?

Coming from the One X, I could never really give up the Sense rom's because I enjoyed the camera so much (and tbh, the whole interface)...
But anyways, from the day I picked up the GS3, I realized how horrible the low-light and motion pictures turn out on the stock camera. When using flash, every picture had a horrible blue glare over the whole picture. I was pretty disappointed considering how well the tech sites rated the GS2 and 3 camera.
tl;dr.......One X camera >>>>> CM10 camera > TouchWiz camera
Is anyone else seeing the same problems i see with the TW camera?? Anything to help fix this? I enjoy switching between Touchwiz roms and CM10, but for now, I'll stick to CM10
Bro,
The one x camera is the best camera by far. It's comparable with some real cameras. As for the gs3, it's an okay camera. It's as good as the hardware...cm10 or TW won't make that much of a difference. If you are concerned about the camera stay with the one x

[Q] Will the camera quality suffer if I install AOKP?

Touchwhiz has a beautiful full functioning camera.
If I install AOKP, will I lose all these features, and getting a really dumbed down camera?
Will the quality suffer too?

short answer? Yes.
long answer? For the most part, yes.
What you end up losing is a lot of the bonus features that are specific to the TouchWiz camera, such as the extra picture modes like Best Shot and that kind of stuff. I'm not sure about quality either way..... haven't really compared image quality side by side. Thankfully it still has the zero shutter lag (unless it's focusing, and using the flash, as with TouchWiz)... which is nice.
All i can really say is that if your phone is already rooted and everything, if you decide to try AOKP to see how the camera is, highly recommend making a backup. can try it out, if you don't like it, full wipe and restore the backup and you'll be back to where you were, as if you never tried it to begin with.

You will most certainly lose quality. Unfortunately there is a loss of quality as well as a loss features. Granted...many of the touchwiz camera features are (very) gimmicky but the overall picture quality is excellent compared to AOSP camera on AOKP or CM10...I am using CM10 currently and am trying to find a good replacement camera app.

[Q] Camera quality with AOKP/AOSP

I know there is a drop off in quality from the Touchwiz camera vs the AOKP camera. For those that have used both, is there a noticable difference? Has anyone had both printed and compared the quality? Is it just the Touchwiz framework that helps or has anyone found a third party app to get close in quality? (paid or free) I loved the customization of the the non stock roms but have a hard time giving up the camera. I have not been able to find any help other than, non stock is just not as good. Thanks for any help. I know a point n shoot or dslr would be best but I don't always have one of those on me.

You can flash 4.2 camera. No noticeable difference from touchwiz to nexus 4.2 port
AT&T SGS3 Marble White
Task & Ktoonsez AoKP ROM
Ktoonsez 11/13 Kernel OC'ed
Medical MJ Supporter
I also recommend the 4.2 camera, though I don't do much printing.

AOSP(or any other vanilla android) camera vs Touchwiz Camera

I just saw that OMNIrom has finally been available for d3att and im quite excited about since it has multiwindow(one of the few things that keeps me locked to touchwiz).
But i was wondering is the stock camera a downgrade? I have read reports and discussions saying the stock camera is much more inferior to the touchwiz camera.
Besides the obvious benefits of having the newest android build, better battery(what i heard), and less bloat(although i usually just titanium them away), I would like peoples opinions on how else does stock compare to touch?

It depends on what you define personally as a "downgrade". Obviously because Touchwiz is proprietary to Samsung and not available for devs to port to their AOSP based roms, you're not going to get the fancy bells and whistles that come bundled with Samsung's camera app. However, I don't think it's fair to call it a downgrade if you're speaking merely in terms of picture and video quality.
From personal experience I've found the stock camera on most of the AOSP 4.3 based roms to be just as good in quality as Samsung's app. 4.4 based roms still have to work out bugs in the stock camera app so I wouldn't try those first. Find yourself a stable 4.3 based rom like CyanogenMod 10.2 or Quantum V2 Final and try your luck with those.
If you find that the camera lacks features you found yourself liking from the Samsung camera app, I suggest finding a good 3rd party camera app such as Camera Zoom FX. It provides just enough features that make the camera a pleasure to use while also retaining great picture quality. It has settings that allow for full 100% jpeg quality whereas some may limit the quality to 80% or less.
Hope this helps, I know how hard it is to find a straight answer since a lot of this depends on your own experience and observation but hopefully this leads you in the right direction.
thanks a lot for ur answer. like im quite sick of the time it takes to upgrade anything by samsung. i never knew that some apps would limit the size. but anyway ill wait for the 4.4 to be a little more stable first. ill definitely make the switch once i gte word that samsung wont support NA S3s anymore,

Custom ROMs and camera performance

Hi,
I'd really like to use a custom ROM, but camera performance is rather important for me. How big is the difference in this aspect between a custom and original ROM?
And also, what's to expect in this subject? Is there any hope to have in the near future a custom ROM with equal to original camera performance?
I have the same inquiry as well, but as for what I've been reading so far. It is not possible at the moment or possibly will never happen( I hope I'm wrong with this one.).
Conclusion: You can't have the best of both worlds.
There is a clear big difference between custom and stock rom in terms of camera quality. It's like night and day in my opinion. Although shots taken by custom rom are acceptable but compare to stock, the details and colors are way off when using custom rom. In terms of futurem nobody knows but this issue also exist on other phone. Like Xperia 2011 devices where the quality really degrades when using AOSP based rom though the big issue there is the camera libraries.
I thought only the Z3's use those very special DRM-Codes in the TA-Partition for LowLight and other Stuff? Isn't the rest "just" Sonys Camera Software?
I would love to use CM11, and i think i could live with a bit less low light quality, but as a DSLR owner i want another camera that is good with "point-and-shoot" situations...the Stock Z1 with the superior automatic is perfect for that kind of stuff....
Can't say how much is the difference, since I did not leave the phone at stock for a very long time, but in CM I find the back camera quality pretty good even in dark settings, when the flash is being used (low ISO).
However, when the flash is disabled or the front camera is used in low light (high ISO), the pictures are next to unusable.
I still can't understand what exact part of the camera processing configuration is stored on those DRM partitions and why did Sony, who otherwise support custom ROM development, made such particular decision...
I'd like to lift this thread and ask again, are there any lollipop roms with better or at least the same quality on camera?

You will not find a CM camera that comes anywhere near the quality of stock, sorry. Feel free to keep asking.
