SMS not being received until device reboot - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Has anyone had any problems not receiving sms messages until the device is rebooted? There are times where the phone will function just fine until I restart it and see that text messages are flooding in. This is only happening on the Note 3 and not the Nexus 5 which is also under t-mobile.

What did you do
TWEAKED N3

I've noticed if I toggle WiFi calling off instead of reboot, texts will download. The only problem with leaving WiFi calling off, is that MMS/picture messages won't send or receive. Also group messaging will not be in a group thread until WiFi calling is toggled back on.

The obvious questions anyone asks should have the most obvious answer. What is your ROM, KERNEL. what tweaks did YOU improvised

I would look to see if you restricted background data of your sms apps or any sync apps. It sounds like you restricted something hence why it syncs on reboot.

check APN settings

It would not sync on reboot if the apn settings weren't correct if I'm not mistaken

Nothing has been restricted as far as apps go. This is on the stock rom, never rooted 4.4.2 KK. I tried adding APN settings manually, but received same results. If this isn't been an known issue with anyone else, I think a factory reset may be in order.

Yeah, fdr is likely next best step

Try changing your network apn settings to ip v4/v6. I was having the same issues, and this fixed it.

Power cycle the device by turning off for 30 seconds and then on again. I hope it will help!!!!!!!!

What's wrong asking him about the factory reset?

If you recently used an iOS device with the same number you have on your Galaxy Note 3, then reset your iMessage via your Apple account. That should do it.
If it’s a different issue, then I am left to assume what happened to your phone. I don’t even know if you can send a text message just fine or not. But if you can and are using a third-party messaging app, please try disabling it first to see if that would solve the problem. It could be just a little messed up setting.
If, however, you can’t send and receive text messages, call your service provider or carrier first and have your SIM card checked.

Factory reset was not required. I was able to correct this by leaving wifi-calling enabled, but setting the wifi-calling preference to cellular preferred. So far so good, been about a week now with no issues.
I know that the SGS5 received an update recently to fix sms/mms issues, so I don't know if the same would ever be pushed to the note 3.

Sms issues

I have only had my Sprint GNote4 since Friday morning and i love the phone. But, i started having a odd issue today. All of the sudden my phone will not send or receive sms text messages, it just says message failed to send. I am using the stock messaging app, however i also tried hangouts and got the same result. What is even more strange to me is how i get texting to work again. What seems to work is i attempt to make a phone call, it immediately fails, but then on the second attempt the call goes through. ...then my text messages all go through. I apologize if someone has posted this, but i didn't see anything about it when i searched.
Anyone see this issue too or am i just special?

Do you by chance have an airave and live in an area being upgraded? Had that issue where I live. If so, turn off the airave and see if it changes the issue. Sprint has a newer version they will swap out if this turns out to be the problem. Hope this helps.
If you mean the update in the system aettings, yes i did try that. Thanks for replying though.
No, i do not have an airwave, but i do believe i am in an area with Spark, i have the litttle swirling star icon next to my LTE icon. Thanks getting back to me.
Here is what it looks like. Sorry if i sound noobish, i just switched to Sprint.

Thanks for the tip, i will try it the next time it happens. Im thinking of flashing a custom ROM to see if it is some sort of bloat crap causing it.

I am still having the issue, and I also have found that my phone calls are not coming through all of the time. I am starting to suspect my SIM may be the cause. I am currently using my phone with LTE disabled to see how it goes.
Do you have adblock or another ad blocking app installed? If so remove the app and see if that fixes your issues.
No adblock apps installed. It happens on stock and custom roms too.

Not receiving SMS/MMS messages

This probably started about a week ago, but I've had the phone for about a month. I'm with Fido in Canada. My previous phone was a Samsung S4, and never had that issue before. I have the 2gb North American ZE551ML on the latest firmware and root, but locked bootloader. I've done a factory reset and cleared the cache but it didn't help. Most of my contacts have an iphones so it seems to only happen to them. Other than that I couldn't really narrow it down to anything else. I've tried using Awsms, Messenger, Stock app, and currently, I'm using Textra but it happens regardless of which app I use. I'm also using Amplify, Powernap, and Greenify and the guide on how to use them from the XDA front page from about a month ago.
I had to use a app from app store to get picture messaging. Text is fine. But no picture messaging

Did you use an iPhone, if only briefly? This sounds like an iMessage issue (SMS/MMS reception broken for only iPhone senders).
No I've never used one, but my mother who's under my account has an Iphone.
You must have disabled some asus app which is impacting the sms delivery ex asus service etc. Disable amplify, powernap, greenify then reboot and try again it will work.

Sounds like the same provider plan, yes? This will be way out in left field, but does the shared plan have only one phone number? (I don't know why in the world it would - party lines are so 1970's - but it doesn't hurt to ask.)

No it's two separate numbers. But I called Fido today, and they said I had Imessage activated on my account and that might be causing the issue.
Use a different SMS program such as Textra and it will start working fine.
Have you tested with WiFi disabled? There was an issue was reported with ASUS Messaging unable to receive MMS with WiFi turned on. We suggested using Hangouts in the meantime.

Does it have to be Hangouts specifically or another third party messaging app? I tried sending messages with wifi on and off using both textra, and the stock messaging app. I lost messages in each combination, it appears to be random.
I wasn't receiving SMS until I signed out of Hangouts, disabled the app, re-enabled it, and signed back in.
what this fixed with the new update?

Dear Chocketbear,
The issue should have already been resolved with earlier firmware update. Please note SIM card slot 1 can access 3G/4G/LTE data. SIM card slot 2 can only be used for 2G service which include voice and basic text messaging (Not multimedia messaging services MMS or internet browsing). If possible please send me a private message to [email protected] with case # N151275977 in the subject line. Please provide the following:
-Serial Number
-Firmware version
-What specific carrier and MVNO service.
-Can you receive basic texting?
-Have you tried wipe cache/recovery?
Sincerely,
Frank

@tmomail.net Android Messages app help

I'm having a frustrating issue with the stock Android Messages app. My work sends notification texts via email, ie. from a gmail account to "mynumber"@tmomail.net.
The Android Messages app (stock android sms app), will not download these texts. I've been troubleshooting this all week and continue to come up empty, here is a breakdown of symptoms and what I have tried:
-My phone does notify me that a message is received, but requires me to tap to attempt to download the message, but the download always fails.
-Auto-download MMS is enabled, app is up to date
-third party apps WORK (kinda, see textra screenshot. message is delivered along with a weird code)
-if there is a subject in the email, the subject WILL display in the text, but not the body
-Safe Mode does not fix it
-phone is Pixel XL from Play store on T-Mobile
-issue happened on stock unrooted phone with all updates
-after exhausting all options I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and Pure Nexus rom, issue did not go away
-have deleted and edited all APNs countless times changing damn near every option to no avail
-have tried on and off wi-fi, with and without wi-fi calling, no changes
-normal MMS works fine (picture texts, group texts)
-have tried same APNs and apps on two different devices on my plan (V20 and S6 edge), and this issue cannot be duplicated. tmomail messages works fine on those phones with the exact same settings as on my Pixel
That's basically it. Hopefully I'm missing something simple. Please help if you have any suggestions, I'm open to just about anything. I know the easy fix is to just use Textra or another third party app, but I really don't want to. Also I can't stand not knowing what the problem is!!! Thanks in advance!

Hey so I know your post is literally years old but I had been going through the same problem for YEARS before someone at T-Mobile finally figured it out. I figured I would post this to give you a hand and maybe someone else with this problem.
After going back and forth with T-Mobile for, no joke, 2 years on this issue, the fix was finally discovered. It has to do with T-Mobile "Digits". It's a "free" "second line" which is really just an alternate phone number for you to give people on sites like CraigsList if you don't want people to know your real number. You can just use Google Voice for this. Anyway, call T-Mobile and tell them you don't want your Digits number linked to your cell number (at least not for texts) and it will fix the issue.
Drove me crazy for YEARS. Hope this helps you or anyone else out there!

SMS/MMS Picture Send Failures

Pixel 2 XL (unlocked) on the T-Mobile network. I can send messages without an issue and everything else works fine, but when I attempt to text pictures or receive them it hangs and eventually comes back stating it couldn't send. This has happened through the messages app and Textra. I was able to send and receive via Chomp, but that's it.
Anybody else see this happening and if so, have you been able to fix it? I've cleared cache and data, restarted the phone and reset defaults for network.
THANKS!!!

I have that issue sometimes on my N6 and 6p and it appears to be the WiFi calling. Turning off WiFi resolves the issue when that happens to me. I also read that 3rd party sms apps can't send mms when WiFi calling is active on t-Mobile. I normally use the stock sms app for this reason.

Yeah, I'm still looking around. Not sure why it's being difficult. Wi-Fi calling doesn't look to be an option that I'm seeing in settings. And I turned off WiFi and it still wouldn't send. But using Chomp it went right through.

Me too. Textra even has a setting that will turn wifi off temporarily when sending or receiving MMS. It's under MMS, then Legacy. Then, there is a toggle to turn wifi off.

General Be wary of not receiving SMS

I got the Pixel 6 Pro yesterday and today I suddenly stopped receiving SMS through T-Mobile. I kept getting a "SIM card cannot be used. Use the Unlock Device app." Talked to customer service and they reset my network connection, gave me a new SIM card, I erased network/SIM settings on phone and even did a factory reset and nothing. I was able to access the internet and make and receive calls and even send texts but I just couldn't receive them. I had been texting myself for 10 hours. Finally, I gave up and put the new SIM back into my S21 and I got all the messages the Pixel couldn't receive. I don't know if I just got a bad unit but keep an eye out!
Running dual sim and no problem here.
I'm running an unlocked P6P on TMobile using esim. Have no problem with text messages. Maybe try using esim
I had an issue with getting sms on mine. I had just switched my second sim to esim but sms was still going to my old phone. I disabled chat features in the messaging app and that seemed to work for me. Wondering if you maybe are having the same issue?

I have just left mine off, it happens when you switch phones, some kind of random bug if you swap sim card with chat activated, the new phone doesn't activate it properly, you can send but not receive. It happened with my pixel 5 as well, Vodafone engineers had a look in to it when I complained to them, then after about a week I got an text saying welcome to chat features and it started working again. But I am leaving chat turned off, as don't trust it.
Make sure chat features are disabled on the OLD phone first, then enable them on the Pixel 6 Pro. I've seen issues on Verizon if this is not done.
Anybody find a fix? I have tried switching to eSIM, disabled RCS and resetting but still no SMS/MMS. What's weird is that SMS/MMS worked fine for the first week or 2 with the phone, then one day boom it's gone lol.
