[Q] A few questions I need answered

I have a few questions:
1) Which is better? The Cyanogenmod 7 or The Nightly builds?
2) I really like the Sense UI. After flashing Cyanogenmod 7, can I change my "theme" to Sense UI?
3) Which ROMs you can recommend me? I like to use the Sense UI. So till the time ROMs have Sense UI, I'm cool with it. Most of the ROMs I see have different themes which I kinda don't like. I got a few other ROMs with Sense UI but they needed to do some partition in the SD card and stuff which didn't really go inside my brain
4) After performing a Nandroid backup, I should flash my rom. So why do a few devices get bricked? Can't they just restore the backup and be back to normal version again?
5) After rooting, should I connect my phone to any HTC online services?
6) If HTC future updates come out and I'm on my rooted phone then will the update automatically install itself or I need to backup to the original version and then update my phone?

1) You may go with the nightly builds, they seem to be quite stable as a daily rom. You can reflash an old build if one is buggy anyway.
2) You can't switch to Sense UI with a Cyanogen 7 installation, but you can install Launcher Pro or another launcher and then apply a theme that looks like Sense.
3) Leedroid is by far the most known Sense rom on Desire. You can also look after Teppic74's rom and addons which are also nice if you don't want a rom that has an infinite nomber of addons or changes.
4) Pay attention not to change your recovery when you backup an old rom. You have to restore with the same recovery you backed up your rom.
5) You must be talking about HTCsense.com, this online service has appeared with Desire HD and Z, it isn't available on our Desire Froyo roms at the moment. If you want to try HD Roms and others with a later version of Sense UI, you won't be forced to connect to this service.
6) When a future updates come out, if you want to install a stock RUU, you'll only have to create a goldcard before installing the RUU. No matter your Desire is rooted or not, after the RUU install, you will be S-ON and unrooted.
But you should wait for developers to release roms with the new HTC update, therefore you won't have to root and S-OFF your device again.

Your device won't get bricked if you pay attention to what you are doing when flashing.
Make sure before any flash to :
- Check the MD5 hash of your rom
- Wipe Data, Cache, Dalbik-Cache when it is needed

Sorry, but imho your guide is incomplete. I write the necessary new things in red:
- Download .zip : http://leedroid.ftp.rshost.eu/Bravo-ROMs/LeeDrOiD_V2.4.1_A2SD.zip
- Copy your .zip on your SD card
- Backup/copy all data of sd-card on your computer, just in case;
- Root your phone with Unrevoked (you can find some tutorials around here): noob-guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084; for advanced users: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
- Save your systemdata and apps; i recommend Titanium Backup (Menu>Batch>”Backup all systemdata and apps”).
- Turn off your phone, press volume down+power button to boot into bootloader and select RECOVERY.
- Made a full nandroid-backup. Reboot your phone. Copy all data on the sd-card to your computer again.
- Turn off your phone, press volume down+power button to boot into bootloader and select Recovery; now select "partition sd-card" and then "partition sd". Set 0 MB for SWAP, 512 MB for ext3 and rest for FAT32. If you cannot create ext3, create ext2. After complete partitioning, select "SD: ext2 to ext3". Now go back and select "USB-MS-Toggle". Now copy all the saved data back on your sd-card. Is this complete, select "other" and "toggle signature verify".
- Wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik Cache
- Flash Leedroid's rom.
- Restore all missing systemdata and apps (Titanium Backup>Menu>Batch>"Restore all missing systemdata and apps").
- Restart phone
First start can take some time, because all apps were moved to the sd-card.

It will, don't forget to flash this .zip : http://wbss.ro/coolexe/Extra/Alignment_Cool.zip before installing the rom. (This .zip will convert your ext3 partition on your sd to ext4, and it will also align that partition)

And what are radios?

The Radio of your device is the thing which makes it possible to call and to have mobile internet. And some radios should be better than others, so they should increase battery life or so but i never felt a difference with different radios yet.

The use of partioning is, that u are able to save data on the sd.
If you ask, why you should do it with this ext3- partition (i do not know why you need swap-partition; i just set it to 0 MB, as i was told ): With this ext3- partion all apps you install are automatically moved on the sd-card, wether the programmer has destined it or not. On this way you consume less space internal memory, by what you save/increase indirectly internal memory. This function is available for roms with apps2sd(a2d).
If you really what to increase your internal memory, you need data2sd (also available in some roms here). Here ALL data were moved to your sd-card without exception and the system is leaded to believe that the free internal space is the free space on your sd-card. On this way you increase your internal memory directly, and you will never have any save problems any more.

How to Flash/Use Multirom(Noob friendly)

Okay these are the steps I took and put as simple as possible.Some steps may be skipped depending on if you have done them or not.These are written based off my setup and what i did.
Disclaimer:Me nor Tassadar or bigsupersquid are responsible for any damage done to your phone so use at your own risk.
Multirom Install:
1.Format through cwm your sd card to have an ext(Recommended 512 mb)
2.Download the two zips from bigsupersquid posted here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20626123#post20626123
3.Place them both onto your sd card.
4.Boot into cwm and flash the cwm zip you downloaded from squid's thread.
5.Now reboot your phone and then boot again into cwm(It should have blue text if it flashed correctly and the multirom option)
6.Now I highly recommend you make a backup of your current rom just in case anything goes wrong.(I made a copy of it onto my pc as well.)
7.Now flash the other zip titled "Multirom..." and wait for it to install.Now reboot to see if it boots.If boots then everything has been done correctly.
Rom on SD Card setup/install:
For this I have install on phone the latest build of cm for oV and will be using the same rom to setup on sd card just for test.
1.Now here Make another backup of your current rom through recovery(Will be used trust me)
2.Now flash the rom you want to use on sd card.(If using a 2.3 rom then the sd card crom msu also be 2.3 and vice versa for 2.2 roms).Reboot phone(a must so dalvik is created correctly).(Make sure to do the appropriate steps fro flash rom like wiping etc.)
3.Reboot back into recovery.Go to multirom and select "Create from current rom". (flash the multirom zip again if it says folder not found)(ROM on the sdcard is placed in /sd-ext/multirom/rom/).
4.After it finished you can go ahead and restore the backup you made in step 1. and the reboot after finished and wait until boot manager shows up.
5.Select boot from sd card and it should boot into the rom you chose to install to sd.(If it doesn't then you did one of the steps wrong).
6.That's it you now have multirom booting enjoy it !
MultiROM recovery menu description:
Active/deactive state is for recovery only, you can boot ROMs from backup in boot manager - that means its N-times boot rather than dual-boot.
When not active(boot from internal memory):
Activate (move from backup) - when you already have backup, this will move it to active folder (fast).
Activate (copy from backup) - same as above, but it copies it instead of moving
Create from current ROM - pretty self-explanatory
When active(boot from sdcard):
Deactivate (move to backup) - Moves current ROM to backup folder, so next boot will be from internal memory
Backup - Creates backup of current ROM
Erase current ROM - Deletes current rom, next boot will be from internal memory
Copy modules from int mem - Copies modules from ROM in internal memory to SDcard. Try this if WiFi does not work in SDcard ROM.

Well pros would be you can dual boot between roms.Cons would be not many different roms since most are based off cm7 lol

why would i want to switch on the go from roms? im not being a **** or anything just wondering why someone would want to do that.

Some just like the choice of having two different roms customized differently with different apps and such.

Plus you can partition a bigger space on your SD card giving you more room for apps

What is the likeliness this recovery will prevent you from flashing a different recovery.
There are a couple people trying to flash the rzrecovery and getting failed attempts.

If you flash the recovery image using flash_image while booted into android, I think it's safe to say just about zero.

Something was not working right because a couple people using the multi recovery couldnt get rzrecovery to install. Not sure if they got IHO installed or not. I have a feeling something is not allowing flash_image to work properly with that recovery.
I just wanted to see what the devs of this recovery thought.

Tetris from recovery is worth it by itself! havn't installed a second rom yet but this is cool anyways

Current setup: Stock recovery, stock ROM, rooted, I747UCLEM
Steps already done:
1. do a full imei backup
Steps I'm planning on taking this evening:
1. download Rom Manager
2. use Rom Manager to flash CWM Recovery (should I do normal or CWM Touch?)
3. do a nandroid backup (never done one before)
3. download zip of CM10 M2 rom and google apps (where do i put them on the int or ext SD?)
4. boot into recovery, do factory reset/wipe, wipe cache
5. install CM10 from zip
6. ?? do i install google apps as well now, or do i wait til after CM10 is done/rebooted and then go into recovery again?
6. sign into google to get contacts/gmail/etc synced back up
7. anything else? i'm not going to restore from TB, I want to start fresh.

2 up to you i prefer twrp you can get it from goomanager in the play store
3 easy to do in recovery best insurence you can have for a bad flash
3. internal is best
6 i have done it both ways with no problem
7 nope looks like you got the steps right but you do know m2 is a experamental build

#2 do normal unless you want to buy touch, don't think it's free
#3 once in recovery choose backup, it will take a bit, let it finish
#4 put it on your internal and this should be done before you boot into clockworkmod recovery
#5 steps in recovery are: 1 install zip from sd card
2 choose zip from sd card
3 navigate to the zip,
4 install
#6 you can install them right after the ROM
#7 reboot when finished, let phone fully boot THEN
#8 reboot phone, helps settle things a little (you just made a big change to your system lol)
#9 sign into google and let things sync
Troubleshooting, gapps may force close on you a couple times, don't worry, if it happens continuously then reboot into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache and reflash just the gapps (they are finicky) If you experience multiple force closes and stuff not working right, boot into recovery and under advanced find fix permissions and let that run.
If all else fails then boot into recovery and do it all over again, coming from stock to aosp your MAY have to flash a couple times to avoid errors while flashing a completely different os(usually not an issue but you never know)

So my nandroid backup just finished, and the folder is only 20MB in size. Is that normal? I guess I expected it to be bigger. I have about 70 apps, all installed to their default location, no music, no photos, no videos, on rooted stock AT&T. I did the backup by booting into CWM Touch Recovery from Rom Manager, going to 'backup and restore', 'backup to external SD card'. Took about 20 minutes to complete, it said completed successfully, and I hit 'go back', then 'reboot system now'. When I moved the backup folder to my pc and checked the size, it only shows as 6 files are 20.9mb.
Files are as follows:
boot.img 10,240kb
cache.ext4.dup 1kb
data.ext4.dup 760kb
nandroid.md5 1kb
recovery.img 10,240kb
system.ext4.dup 228kb

[Q] Many questions (CWM, ROMs)

I'm new here and I'd like to install a new ROM on my Gio but I want to make sure I know what I'm doing before trying something and bricking my phone. :angel:

I installed CWM v5.2.0.6 (followed the instructions here). Is this ok, or do I need to install v5.0.2.7? And if I do need a newer version, is there a way to get an update or do I have to follow the same steps as before?
1.Download the CWM 5.0 v2 and copy to the Root (not in any folder) of your SD card
2. Put your phone in recovery Mode(press: Home button + Power button toghether)
3. In recovery mode, select the downloaded file from SD-card(Use Volume keys to navigate and home button for enter).
4. Search for the root gb updated.zip file on your SD-card
5. Run the update
6. Reboot

I tried creating a backup with the CWM version I have, but I get this error: "Can't mount /system".
CWM does create a folder in sdcard/ clockworkmod/ backup/ date, but it only contains the following files:
recovery.img and boot.img.
However, this post says I should actually have more files in the backup folder:
.android_secure.vfat.tar ,boot.img , cache.ext4.tar , data.ext4.tar , nandroid.md5 , recovery.img, system.ext4.tar.
Is this because of my CWM version? Or maybe because I still have the operating system that came with my device (+updates)?
What I really want to know is: can I rely on this backup, will it work?

I want to install CM10.1.5 from here, but I have many questions and I don't really know where to look for answers. (Sorry, I really am a complete noob.)
What's the difference between androidarmv6 jenkins build and mardon build? And what's the difference between the 3 versions? Can I just install the Version with CM-Superuser and not worry about it?
Should the updates be installed via CWM - apply update from SDcard? What about the additions - CWM --> install zip from SDcard?
How can I install extras if they are "not CWM flashable"?
What happens to my apps when I install a new ROM? Do I have to install them all again? Is all data lost? Or will they all be restored from my google account and the SD card or something like that?
Finally, how can I use the ext2 partition in my SDcard to install apps? Is this function included in the ROM? Or do I need to install something else? a2sd darktremor? If yes, how (I find the instructions here confusing and overwhelming, and the post is old, so probably outdated)? Or should I use the "Link2SD" addition to the ROM?
I'm sorry for asking so much, but I'm feeling kind of lost.

The error is an expected one and happens generally when you are trying to backup a stock ROM using the clock work mod recovery. Please, note that you can’t do a completed nandroid backup of a stock firmwares. So, just install any custom ROM and then you can backup and restore anytime.

If I understood correctly, the best (only?) way to return to stock ROM is to install Odin or similar firmware flashing tool and to get the stock firmware from sites like sammobile.com and sampro.pl. However, it also says that not all firmwares might be available and I haven't looked more into it all of this yet.

Did you root your phone yet?
That should solve the problem from the can't mount system, data, etc

Yes, I used the instructions there to root my phone and install CWM (v5.0.2.6), but that thread is 2 years old, so I'm afraid it won't be up to date in relation to certain things. For example, I did create an ext2 partition on my SD card using those instructions, but I found an easier way to move apps from my phone to the SDcard (using the link2SD app, available on Google Play). The information about ROMs is also not up to date.

If you want to install a custom rom just
-wipe data factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-advance>wipe dalvik cache
-install zip from sdcard
-reboot

My main concern at the moment is how to restore my original ROM if something should go wrong, though. I've found some interesting information in this thread but I've been busy this week and I'll need to go back and read it all with more attention before I try something.

Download ODIN 4.42 and GIO ops and a sotckrom MD5 file then put it into the odin and put your phone into recovery mdoe and plug it into your computer. Then click start

you have to put your phone in downloadmode to flash with odin as far as i know,but i have an other question;
can you use heimdall with the samsung galaxy gio

I am trying to flash a new recovery on my samsung galaxy gio with ODIN after it is bricked flashing tass- 6.0.4.5.zip(this cwm seems for the mini!!!) is this possible and if so,which one can?and how to do that...

Yes it is possible and you need ODIN 4.42, GiPS and a Stock Rom extracted out of the zip.

About to flash custom ROM: some questions.

I have never flashed a ROM before, but there's a first time for everything and I'm about to take the plunge.
What I have now:
-a rooted V500
-TWRP 2.6.3.2
-a 32 gig sd card with a back-up on it made with TWRP
-Mahdi and Gapps are on the sd card.
What I want:
-flash Mahdi, try it out a bit, be able to go back to current stock with all my settings.
Questions:
1.After flashing Mahdi, if want to go back to the backed-up stock, will everything be again exactly like it is now, every single setting?
2. Can I do the same once I have Mahdi; that is customize it , make another back-up with TWRP and go back to Mahdi again whenever I want, keeping every setting?
3. So basically Q1+Q2 together; can I just use the back-ups to go back and forth between different ROM's keeping all the settings?
4. Is it possible to keep apps and/or app settings going from one ROM to another, or should I just install everything new and manually apply all settings?
5. In the Mahdi installation instructions it says:
" Copy GApps and ROM ZIP to your SDCard
- Boot into Recovery
- Flash Mahdi-Rom zip from SDCard
- Flash GApps zip from SDCard
- DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET (otherwise your device will be stuck at boot)
- Reboot"
Should I really flash mahdi+gapps and then do a wipe?
Shouldn't it be the other way around; first do a wipe and then flash?
6. in TWRP, how do I actually flash? Do I use the "install" button for that?
