[Q] Newb question: How do you flash custom ROMS

I rooted my EVO running stock Froyo last night with Unrevoked 3.2. It worked flawlessly and phone is experiencing no problems. Now i'm all excited to run the custom ROMS but kind of confused as how the flashing of the custom ROMS works. Do I have to wipe out the entire contents of my SD card everytime I want to run a custom ROM? I only have the 8gig card. I was under the assumption that I could save my current stock setup and download and flash into a custom ROM and revert back to the stock rooted setup when I wanted. I downloaded a program called ROM Manager v2.0.2.6 but unsure how to use it. Looks like a 1-click solution to loading custom ROMs but I dont want it to wipe out my phone. Can someone please help me to understand the steps to take to load a custom ROM? I was thinking of trying out Fresh or something similar which still has HTC Sense in it. I'm not sure about using ROM manager, perhaps somebody else can help with that.
The process is simple...
Connect your EVO to your PC and enable disk drive.
Transfer the ROM zip to the root of your sd card (if your computer mounts as drive F: ... just transfer to F:\)
Eject/disable disk drive
Boot into recovery (turn device off, hold volume down and power button at same time until you see your hboot screen, choose recovery)
Perform a nandroid backup (just in case you need to get back to where you are)
Perform wipe
Use recovery option to flash zip from sdcard
Select the ROM zip
Those are the quick and dirty instructions, I'm a newb with this stuff, I've had my EVO for 2 weeks and I've not had a single problem. I had CM6 on it and I just flashed Fresh 3.2 to test that out and test 4G this weekend.

I would advise doing a Nandroid backup of your current setup. Then go the development section and choose a rom that suits you. Each developer normally will tell you how to go about flashing there rom.
Basically you would need to go into recovery and choose the flash from zip...

ok first no you dont have to erase your sd card every time you flash a rom.
you should however do a factory dalvik and cache wipe. this will erase all settings yuo previously had and will uninstall all apps.
to combat this you can use programs like Titanium back up to back up all your apps. (system settings are not recommended to be blind restored as they can cause issues between roms)
You can also make a back up of your stock rom you have now to do this through rom manager simply make sure you have the latest clockwork recovery flashed (very top button in rom manager) then go down to where it says back up rom click it and it will do the rest. This is recommended before you do anything.
once you ahve your nand back up (the back up through rom manager) and have your apps backed up through something like titanium back up. place the rom yuo want to flash on your sd card and follow these steps.
boot into recovery (either through rom manager or by powering down the phone and then holding vol down and power until it launches the boot loader and select recovery)
select wipe data/factory reset
select wipe cache partition
Select install zip from sd
select choose zip rom sd
scroll to and select the rom you moved to the sd card
select yes and let it do its thing once done select reboot phone.
It will take a little extra time the first time it boots up vs normal jsut let it sit and it should after a while boot into the custom rom.

Thanks everyone! I'm running titanium backup at the moment and backing up the entire system. I had ROM Manager do a backup of my stock ROM last night, so I think i'm good. ROM Manager also downloads ROMs for me and sets them to load at boot up. Most of the ROMS suggest doing a full wipe?

a full wipe jsut means factory/data cache and dalvik which is basically wiping all info on the phone itself. the sd card however doesnt need to be wiped

i installed baked1.7 and all loaded smoothly. I'm assuming I now have to re-download titanium backup to restore my apps and all?
Also, i'm finding no info on how to load the wimax update and the htc radio update files and the custom kernels for baked1.7

Load those updates onto the root of your sd card. Get quickboot from the market to easily boot into recovery mode. Or you can power off, then hold vol down while powering on to get into bootloader and select recovery. Flash zip file and select those files. Reboot and your wimax/radio should be updated.

[Q] Stuck with custom rom:(

Hi there,
I recently flash leedroid 1.3 to my DHD and all went fine, however I later decided I preferred my stock Rom over it, so went into Rom manager and tried to restore from a nandroid backup I did before I flashed LeeDroid however it said "checking md5 sums...MD5 mismatch!" so booted into recovery then tried it from there. No luck..
I then tried ,Wipe data/factory reset, then "Wipe cache partition", then "Advanced > Wipe Dalvik Cache" and "Wipe Battery Stats", then restore tried to restore again still no luck..I've Tried it with two different nandroid backups (that worked before when I flashed back from cyanogen to stock)
Is there anyway I can get back to my stock Rom thanks.

(Forgot to mention I've got S-off and Rooted and CWM 2.5.1.3 installed)

- Cache

step. 4 flash as normal and it should boot up with stock rom if your happy with not being rooted for a little while go for a 1.72 rom, if not stick with a 1.34 (look at the set of numbers on the file name , thats the version number)

(Only difference is the 1.72 and 1.34 and 1.72 isn't rootable as of yet is it?)

look at the file extensions, you need to flash, which means you need a ZIP file, not an exe, 1.72 at the moment cannot be rooted. so stick with 1.34.
my DHD is one of the first batch with the camera misaligned and screen slightly loose, but i love my phone so much i can live with these defects ,
i think ive done everything to my phone, (i.e brick it, flash it, create my own failed rom),, so thats why i can help haha,

Go into recovery, select mount and storage and then select one by one format boot, format system, format data, format cache.
I am trying to do the same thing as you. I want to revert back to 1.32 and get kamma's or apache14 overclocked kernels....as at the moment android revolution 2.0.1 and leedroid 1.3 are not any better than the stock one.

Issues with various ROMs

Hey Guys,
So I've been having some issues with various ROMs on my LTE Galaxy Nexus. I first tried flashing to bigxie's build last week and that was yielding various bug reports. I flashed again with the same results (even without loading my backed up apps from Titanium Backup).
So I went back to stock... all was well again.
I just flashed to axi0m's ROM with Apex kernel. It has awesome performance but I keep getting force closes for random apps: Chrome to Phone, Trebuchet, etc.
I feel like at this point, its something I'm doing wrong or something wrong with my phone. I have followed the instructions to the T for each ROM install...
My order or process is as follows:
-Format data
-Erase partition cache
-Erase mount & storage /system (for axi0m)
-Load ROM
-Load GAPPS (applicable to bigxie's ROM)
-Reboot
Anyone have any ideas for me?

Well, I'll start by saying that I have ALWAYS run into issues when trying to use custom kernels. I've resorted to sticking with the kernel that comes with whatever ROM I install. This always seems to provide the most stability for me.
Next time you flash a ROM I recommend following the process that's worked extremely well for me on all my previous phones, including this one...
1. Put the ROM on your SD card
2. Reboot into Recovery
3. Do a Nandroid backup of your current ROM
4. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
5. Wipe Cache Partition
6. Go into Mounts
7. Format /system
8. Flash new ROM
9. Go into Advanced and Wipe Dalvik Cache
10. Fix Permissions (Also in Advanced)
11. Reboot phone
12. Sign into your Google account (1st step in the setup screen)
13. Let the phone sit for 10 full minutes without touching it
14. Reboot phone again

You don't need to format data, erase partition.
All you really need to do is:
1. Download the ROM, Kernel (if desired), gapps (if required)
2. Verify its MD5 hash [optional... but I recommend doing it, google HashTab]
3. Put the files onto your phone's internal storage.
4. Reboot into recovery mode.
5. If its a new ROM, wipe data(factory settings),cache,dalvik. If its the same ROM but upgrading, then just skip this step.
6. Flash ROM, Kernel (if you downloaded one.. verify its compatible, meaning don't flash franco kernel on a 4.0.2 ROM), gapps
7. Reboot.
Having FC problems? boot into Clockwork and fix permissions.
Afraid something might not go well? do a nandroid, but I'm pretty experienced at flashing so I've avoided at doing nandroid but since you're still not familiar with the steps. Nandroid backup can be very useful.

I definitely agree with checking the MD5 sum. That should be step 1 after downloading the ROM. I know you don't 'have' to format /system but it's just an extra precaution I've always taken and I have never had a problem with it.

Oh, I didn't know you mentioned it too. I only looked at the OP. I guess it couldn't hurt, why not?
Another thing to mention, when you flash a new kernel.. it's best to wipe dalvik cache (before or after.. preferably before) then flash the kernel.

I didn't mention checking the MD5 sum, I was just agreeing that it is an extremely important step.

Ok, so I seemed to have resolved a lot of issues by wiping the davlik cache. I was flashing to the stock launcher w/ 4x5 grid (without search) and it required a wipe of the davlik cache. This seemed to clear up the force closes. So far, i have been loving my axi0m ROM.
Now if Samsung/Google can push a new update to fix the radio issues w/ data :|

What to do before giving phone to a family member?

So it's a little different from just selling it to a stranger because I don't want to just wipe everything clean. (as in return it to factory state, unrooted etc.)
I have CM10 running on the phone and I want to keep it rooted and running CM10, I just want to wipe all traces of my Google accounts and apps/data/messages/settings + also get rid of things like nandroid backup, media files, pics etc on the "sd card" directory.
If I select 'factory data reset' under settings - backup & reset in CM10, will it
1) keep CM10/root?
2) erase everything on the SD including nandroid backup, other files on the SD etc.

1) CM10 will be kept, but root may not be working then you only have to flash the su.zip again from recovery
2) SD card should not be affected so basically just delete the data you want to delete from it using any file manager app
Actually I like to do such things from recovery so considering you want the phone as clean as possible, then you may follow the following steps if you wish:

2) Install CM10
3) Install Gapps (I assume your family member will definitely need Play Store at least )
4) Install su.zip for root
5) Reboot and do not enter your google account in the startup wizard, just skip it.
Then you should have a rooted CM10 with Gapps and ready for your family member Gmail account

You're making it more complicated than needed.
1. Plug the phone to usb (or use a file manager app)
2. Delete all the folders that you don't want (or cut them for your phone to your computer to back up pictures or whatever it may be)
3. Go into recovery and wipe: dalvik, factory, cache
4. Optional: re flash rom (to latest cm), with kernel.
5. Done.

Oh yeah and I forgot flash gapps. You won't need to flash su.zip because superuser.apk is already included with cm10 as well as every other custom rom.
All superuser is a apk. Hence su.zip flashes superuser.apk into /system/apps/

Like others suggested.
But i would like to suggest this as well:
I recommend you to return it to full stock configuration as this may come back and haunt you in the future(family member screw it up)..

About to flash custom ROM: some questions.

I have never flashed a ROM before, but there's a first time for everything and I'm about to take the plunge.
What I have now:
-a rooted V500
-TWRP 2.6.3.2
-a 32 gig sd card with a back-up on it made with TWRP
-Mahdi and Gapps are on the sd card.
What I want:
-flash Mahdi, try it out a bit, be able to go back to current stock with all my settings.
Questions:
1.After flashing Mahdi, if want to go back to the backed-up stock, will everything be again exactly like it is now, every single setting?
2. Can I do the same once I have Mahdi; that is customize it , make another back-up with TWRP and go back to Mahdi again whenever I want, keeping every setting?
3. So basically Q1+Q2 together; can I just use the back-ups to go back and forth between different ROM's keeping all the settings?
4. Is it possible to keep apps and/or app settings going from one ROM to another, or should I just install everything new and manually apply all settings?
5. In the Mahdi installation instructions it says:
" Copy GApps and ROM ZIP to your SDCard
- Boot into Recovery
- Flash Mahdi-Rom zip from SDCard
- Flash GApps zip from SDCard
- DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET (otherwise your device will be stuck at boot)
- Reboot"
Should I really flash mahdi+gapps and then do a wipe?
Shouldn't it be the other way around; first do a wipe and then flash?
6. in TWRP, how do I actually flash? Do I use the "install" button for that?
