[Q] Newb question: How do you flash custom ROMS

I rooted my EVO running stock Froyo last night with Unrevoked 3.2. It worked flawlessly and phone is experiencing no problems. Now i'm all excited to run the custom ROMS but kind of confused as how the flashing of the custom ROMS works. Do I have to wipe out the entire contents of my SD card everytime I want to run a custom ROM? I only have the 8gig card. I was under the assumption that I could save my current stock setup and download and flash into a custom ROM and revert back to the stock rooted setup when I wanted. I downloaded a program called ROM Manager v2.0.2.6 but unsure how to use it. Looks like a 1-click solution to loading custom ROMs but I dont want it to wipe out my phone. Can someone please help me to understand the steps to take to load a custom ROM? I was thinking of trying out Fresh or something similar which still has HTC Sense in it. I'm not sure about using ROM manager, perhaps somebody else can help with that.
The process is simple...
Connect your EVO to your PC and enable disk drive.
Transfer the ROM zip to the root of your sd card (if your computer mounts as drive F: ... just transfer to F:\)
Eject/disable disk drive
Boot into recovery (turn device off, hold volume down and power button at same time until you see your hboot screen, choose recovery)
Perform a nandroid backup (just in case you need to get back to where you are)
Perform wipe
Use recovery option to flash zip from sdcard
Select the ROM zip
Those are the quick and dirty instructions, I'm a newb with this stuff, I've had my EVO for 2 weeks and I've not had a single problem. I had CM6 on it and I just flashed Fresh 3.2 to test that out and test 4G this weekend.

I would advise doing a Nandroid backup of your current setup. Then go the development section and choose a rom that suits you. Each developer normally will tell you how to go about flashing there rom.
Basically you would need to go into recovery and choose the flash from zip...

ok first no you dont have to erase your sd card every time you flash a rom.
you should however do a factory dalvik and cache wipe. this will erase all settings yuo previously had and will uninstall all apps.
to combat this you can use programs like Titanium back up to back up all your apps. (system settings are not recommended to be blind restored as they can cause issues between roms)
You can also make a back up of your stock rom you have now to do this through rom manager simply make sure you have the latest clockwork recovery flashed (very top button in rom manager) then go down to where it says back up rom click it and it will do the rest. This is recommended before you do anything.
once you ahve your nand back up (the back up through rom manager) and have your apps backed up through something like titanium back up. place the rom yuo want to flash on your sd card and follow these steps.
boot into recovery (either through rom manager or by powering down the phone and then holding vol down and power until it launches the boot loader and select recovery)
select wipe data/factory reset
select wipe cache partition
Select install zip from sd
select choose zip rom sd
scroll to and select the rom you moved to the sd card
select yes and let it do its thing once done select reboot phone.
It will take a little extra time the first time it boots up vs normal jsut let it sit and it should after a while boot into the custom rom.

Thanks everyone! I'm running titanium backup at the moment and backing up the entire system. I had ROM Manager do a backup of my stock ROM last night, so I think i'm good. ROM Manager also downloads ROMs for me and sets them to load at boot up. Most of the ROMS suggest doing a full wipe?

a full wipe jsut means factory/data cache and dalvik which is basically wiping all info on the phone itself. the sd card however doesnt need to be wiped

i installed baked1.7 and all loaded smoothly. I'm assuming I now have to re-download titanium backup to restore my apps and all?
Also, i'm finding no info on how to load the wimax update and the htc radio update files and the custom kernels for baked1.7

Load those updates onto the root of your sd card. Get quickboot from the market to easily boot into recovery mode. Or you can power off, then hold vol down while powering on to get into bootloader and select recovery. Flash zip file and select those files. Reboot and your wimax/radio should be updated.

[Q] Making sure I do it right.

---US Cellular / CDMA Desire--- not GSM!
I'm officially sick of waiting for USCC's 2.2 update, and I'm going to hope they release a RUU sometime in the future, so I can send in for warranty if I have to.
But I'll take that chance. Getting ready for my jump, so far I understand.
1) unrEVOked is the best way to get custom recovery (CWR), root, and S-OFF.
2) From the CWR, I perform a nandroid backup of my stock USCC rom.
3) From the CWR, I perform a wipe.
4) From the CWR, I apply the Cyanogen .zip
5) From the CWR, I apply the gapps .zip
And then I'll at least have 2.2 and app2sd+
So far so good?
In the future I would like to learn cMTD, and look at Phoenix or FTRapid roms that let me resize partitions for even more space, but one thing at a time.
Bonus question : If I want to modify the Cyanogen .zip file before I apply them, to like remove ADW and add a different launcher, I simply have to change the zip and then re-sign it using the SDK, right?

I never rooted a CDMA version Desire, but your steps seems to be OK.
But you forgot something. If you want to use the a2sd+, you must create an ext partition on your SD card.
Modifying the .zip? You can remove the apks by simply deleting from the zip file and copy over the new ones (does not know if you have to modify something else).
Also you don't need to sign it, just click on Toggle signature verification in CWR and you should be fine (at least it's working for me with unsigned .zips)

yes that is pretty much it, just make sure the rom file you downloaded is compatible withcdma desire
And when using cwm there is no need to resign zips, as it should not check the signature by default. Also instead of editing the rom file, you could always just remove the apps afterwards

Boot into recovery (you should already be rooted with clockwordmod recovery and s-off before you get to this point)
PERFORM A NANDROID BACKUP! (Under Backup and Restore select Backup) - you should have done this earlier
Select Install zip from sdcard
Select Choose zip from sdcard and select recovery-v1.5.6-CustomMTD_S.zip
Press the physical back arrow twice to make sure you are at the main menu of the recovery
Select Advanced then Reboot Recovery
Once you are back in recovery you need to select Wipe data/factory reset
Scroll down to Mounts and Storage then select to format /boot and /system
** At this point the recovery has been patched with the cMTD and all of the partitions have been correctly formatted so you can install your ROM
Now go to choose zip from SD card, select the CM version you downloaded and install
after that's complete, select the google addon (gapps) and install
after that's complete, select vork kernel and install
after that's complete, select the boot-v1.5.6-CustomMTD_S.zip and reboot.
You should be up and running after this with about 290mb of internal storage, CM6/2.2 and everything that entails and pulling down around 1900 in quadrant (on a clean install).

If you're planning on doing cmtd, just follow those steps above exactly, it's everything you need to get the rom/kernel/cmtd installed. It's better to do cmtd when you initially flash the rom IMO, I've had trouble applying it later.

One quick followup, I noticed that Cyanogen doesnt actually use APP2SD+, they use their own modified version of the official FroYo APP2SD, which doesnt require a ext partition. (I think? Is that right?)
I have no problem making a ext partition and going the APP2SD+ route, but....how?
Can I do APP2SD+ with Cyanogen? Is the Cyanogen mod w/ the 290mb of space I have gonna be fine?

You are right. For me personally, 290mb and the ability to move most of the app to SD is plenty of space. I have a ton of apps (everything I see that I want) and still only have 1 or 2 moved to sd. I never did the official apps2sd, it does cause slightly more strain on the card and I never neeeded it. You have to register there to see it, but link includes all files and instructions on how to do it all. Again, for me, it was unneeded.

Upgrading to 2.29.405.5 (Possibility of buying new sdcard)

Hello,
I am thinking of upgrading to 2.29.405.5 from 2.29.405.2.
My device came non-branded when I bought it.
The only thing i've done is that I 've rooted it.
What are the steps that I should follow to upgrade?
Should I update using the update available through my device(via WiFi) or download to my pc and then transfer it via usb?
I am thinking of buying an 8GB card, is there any way to copy all the content from the old to the new one, without having to unistall sth? (I haven't used app2sd or apps like that).
Also, to get this right, what app2sd does actually? Allows me to use a partition of my sd card as an extra space to install apks, as the space available in the device?

If you are rooted never use the OTA updates. Either use a RUU and root again or flash a .405.5 based custom rom. If you never used A2SD+ (the one with ext partition) you can just copy all files from one card to the other. (make sure you also copy the hidden files).

A RUU will unroot your phone, but why not flash a custom rom?
If you want to stay close to the stock rom just flash Leedroid

I thought I 've read somewhere in the forums, that upgrading a rooted device will cause a brick. Is that correct? Or this happens via OTA updates?
Is Leedroid similar to sense style?
I am not familiar to all this, but I am willing to try, as long as my device will not be bricked!
Also does Leedroid support greek localization?

Upgrading via OTA causes problems for some people. But since you wanna flash the ROM using RUU, it won't cause any problems, you have to root it again, as said before.
Leedroid IS a sense rom, check out the Desire android developement sub-forum.
For greek localization - if the Eλληνικά is for Hellenic, then yes, LeeDroid supports it .

I visited the Leedroid site and saw that there are some problems at the versions 2.3a-c..
Is 2.3d a more stable one?
I know that, anything isn't perferct, but leaving original rom for a custom one and having problems with it doesn't sound good to me.. :-S
With Leedroid will I be able to use market and all the applications I used?
In example, I have already backed up, my apks with Titanium backup and my SMS with SMS Backup&Restore, will I be able to restore EVERYTHING with these 2 applications to the Leedroim rom?
For the above question I 've found here this: "Not booting / Stuck after boot animation – Allow the phone time to boot after flashing. Sometimes it can take up to 5 minutes. Also don’t restore system settings using Titanium. It can cause faults (unless you want to take the risk, ONLY restore items in GREEN colour font)"

I have stopped to follow the Leedroid thread, but most of the issues are user related and not rom. So if you do a full wipe and only restore data apps (the green once) with titanium you should not have any issues.
With the Leedroid you will be able to do anything the 405.5 stock sense can do plus a bit extra.
Yes titanium is good to back up your apps, no idea about sms backup since it's not important to me. Also you home screen settings will be gone and you need to re-enter your email accounts (maybe you can also backup email accounts with titanium). However, this would also happen if you use a RUU.
If you want to flash leedroid, I assume you are rooted with unrevoked and have Clockworkmod as recovery image?
If yes:
Download this
Put it on the sd card (not in any folder)
Boot in to recovery
Nandroid (backup)
Wipe data/factory reset (this will wipe all data on the phone, the sd remains untouched), wipe cache and under advanced wipe dalvik cache
Select "install zip form sd" chose Leedroid and let it install.
This will install the noA2SD version, if you want more space for apps look in to making a ext partition on your sd card and use this file instead.

2.3d is a stable one. And some functions are working better for me as on the stock 2.2!!!
So far, no problems/freezes etc.
Market is installed, I can assure you can use it.
Titanium backup is working too (however not tried SMS backup - but it should work)
I only backup the apps that I use(d) + the data for it and the so-called "green colored settings" and TI always restored it without problems.

What is the choice at titanium backup batch processes that will backup up the applications installed with their data?
Also, I 've been reading about this so called "radio", if I 've understood well, this is responsible for the call, sms, mms recieving and sending or I am completely wrong?
If I install leedroid (the no-a2sd version) shouldn't I install a radio as well?
When should I do that? Which one? (the latest found here -> 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 ?)

* Download this -> trying to, getting a (5xx) error :S
* Put it on the sd card (not in any folder) ->with the name it comes? Or renaming it to "update.zip"?

The batch process is backup all user apps + system data, and there you should uncheck the "red ones". You notice that it has the largest number on the right.
You can update the radio whenever you want, but I did after installing LeeDroid (the same way you install as the custom ROM) and no error. I am using the radio in my signature, but used 5.11.05.27 before, so I recommend to stick with that for a while.

Careful when updating radio, this is one off the things that can brick your phone. Check md5 and don't interrupt the the process. If you don't feel comfortable updating radio, it's not essential.

So basically it controlls the mobile network transmitter, bluetooth, wifi, etc.
And no, it won't get deleted when you do a full wipe!
Your radio is alright - I had the same when installing LD 2.3d and it will work on it 100%, so no update needed!

I really thought that it would delete everything along with the radio.. :S I still have much to learn

And thinking of creating the partitions so that I can use the SD as internal memory.
Is that right?

Read the first post of the ROM thread, it tells you what you need to have setup.
Then Google videos on GPartEd and use that to partition your SD card. Or just search the forum as it's been covered loads already

[Q] How does Mildwild handle sd-ext apps?

I'm brand new to the world of Android. Over the past couple days I've managed to go from a UK Orange branded Desire, to a fully rooted, S-Off Desire running MildWild v4.3 with the help of some of the guides on this site. But I've finally hit an impasse and could really use a bit of guidance.
Given the technical limitations of the phone I wanted a stable Rom which was relatively easy to install for a first try. But I can't find the information I'm after regarding sd-ext. I'm hoping someone could clarify or point me towards answers for the following:
I've managed to enable installing and moving to sd-ext, but for some reason certain apps e.g. gmail, mail, google play cannot be moved to sd-ext let alone uninstalled from the phone. Is this because they are core system/Android applications?
Even after setting the default install location to sd-ext, once I've installed several apps my internal memory drops from 101mb to 71mb. Is this to be expected? I've not finished installing my apps so I expect this to drop some more.
On the stock HTC rom, the browser would save a cache to the internal memory, so I opted for Opera Mobile instead. Is this still true for Mildwild? Or does the rom store data & caches to the sd card?
Ultimately, I'm shooting for my apps to reside on the sd-ext partition and making sure as much of the data/cache is there, leaving as much space free on the internal memory.

1. these are system apps, so cannot be uninstalled. keep them on system partition anyway, they run fine from there.
2. yes. app data, system app dalvik cache and app cache get stored on /data partition (internal) with this rom. space will gradually decrease the more you install.
3. yes, as above app cache gets stored on /data, including browser, thought this is probably true for most roms.
a couple of points:
1. I believe you are still on stock hboot. to maximise space, you need to change to cm7r2 hboot (easy since you are s-off). basically if you are still on stock hboot, you have a lot of system partition space free and wasted, which can be repartitioned to internal by switching hboot...i.e. you get more internal memory
i recommend to:
- nandroid backup
- change to cm7r2 hboot (recommend using fastboot, guide here)
- boot into recovery, full wipe and nandroid restore​2. install an app like 'diskusage'. you'll be able to browse all your partitions to see how and where all your space is being used to help troubleshoot space issues. can do this for any rom.

Regarding the hboot, you are likely correct. As far as I know the n00b proof everything guide I've followed didn't mention anything about changing hboot. I did see mention of cm7r2 on rom download pages but didn't understand what it meant.
Having looked at the Alpharev website, if I've understood it correctly, by flashing the Hboot with cm7r2, I should have approximately 140mb more than on the stock hboot. While flashing the hboot *seems* simple enough am I able to return to my original hboot at a future date or is it lost forever, meaning I have to rely on the Alpharev hboot images?
If I'm going to wipe the device anyways for the hboot it gives me a chance to try a different rom

I downloaded diskusage, what a lovely program!
I did notice I had a peculiar folder on my sd card titled "backup" with two backups around 250-350mb in size. I'm guessing these are my nandroid backups?

you understand exactly the differences between the hboots. you'd be surprised that people who do actually flash them have no idea what they're doing or what they are
you can easily switch between hboots, you pick it depending on the rom's system size. you can go back to stock hboot by flashing 'bravo downgrader' (some hboots like cm7r2 are write protected), followed by 'bravo stock' from alpharev.
before flashing them, check the md5sums of the hboots using a free program like md5check.
once you've set up fastboot as above, follow the commands on alpharev (just beneath the table of hboots). you'll see cm7r2 at the top of the bootloader screen if successful.

nandroid backups are stored in sdcard/clockworkmod/backup
i always keep a couple on PC for safe keeping, they can also start to take up a lot of space on sd once you start to install lots of apps.
make sure you always nandroid backup before flashing a zip or different rom. when/if you restore them if something goes wrong or you don't like the changes, you restore the exact state of the phone (contacts, apps, homescreens...EVERYTHING)

Ok I must be missing a trick somewhere.
I've followed all the steps outlined on Alpharev's site:
1) Nandroid backup in recovery.
2) Verify the MD5SUM of the file you downloaded against the one in the table.
3) Flash HBOOT with your phone in fastboot mode (Back+POWER) -> 'fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl.img' (change into the correct filename for the HBOOT you downloaded)
4) 'fastboot reboot-bootloader'
5) 'fastboot erase cache'
6) Boot recovery, wipe everything and restore.

Fastboot erase cache is a fastboot command.
In fastboot menu select bootloader and press power and then in bootloader select recovey and press power to enter recovery

Excellent, I was lost at that last step and this is what I needed to piece it all together. I can happily confirm everything went well. I have my rom installed and the phone is still going.

Even after setting the default install location to sd-ext, once I've installed several apps my internal memory drops from 101mb to 71mb. Is this to be expected? I've not finished installing my apps so I expect this to drop some more.
On the stock HTC rom, the browser would save a cache to the internal memory, so I opted for Opera Mobile instead. Is this still true for Mildwild? Or does the rom store data & caches to the sd card?
Ultimately, I'm shooting for my apps to reside on the sd-ext partition and making sure as much of the data/cache is there, leaving as much space free on the internal memory.

Hi folks,
just a quick note on this post. I just moved from Mildwild CM- 5.0 to Mildwild 4.3 (Oxygen) because the first one was giving me a delay problem on call. before the move I have made a titanium backup of all my apps+data. After the I have installed mildwild 4.3 and restored all the app+data I have something like 17Mb internal memory free whether with the MildWild 5.0 I had more than 40mb.
Could something explain that? Did I do something wrong?

Nop, you can move them manually to sdcard. I don't think when restoring apps they will all go straight to sdcard, sometimes you need to move them manually.
You can also go to cyanogenmod settings and in the first option (I think is about allowing moving apps?) select there to move to sdcard by default.
To help you can also download S2E from the market, open it, select Apps and Private Apps and if dalvik if you still need space. Leave app data on internal, selecting only Applications to be moved. Reboot, if you're still short on space, open S2E again and select to move Dalvik as well, reboot, you should be okay now
Using cmr2 hboot also allows more space on internal, less headaches

do not use S2E with Mildwild Oxygen: "S2E works only with CyanogenMod7 and CyanogenMod9"
you do not need to use any extra apps to move apps to sd-ext. follow the instructions in the first post of the mildwild thread.
you should be s-off with cm7r2 hboot to maximise space with this rom. (cm7r2 hboot with Mildwild CM-5.0 would also work)
read my first reply in this thread to understand where all your apps/dalvik/data are stored: i.e. use an app like 'diskusage' to check

[Q] Internal Memory Full

I have recently rooted, installed CWM & CM10.1 -- The problem I have is now my internal SD is close to being full, but I havent installed anything on it yet besides a couple apps and some pictures.. Total Internal memory was 16GB.
When I go to Setting > Storage - its shows I have 12.5 GB of total space, but only about 1 GB available.. It shows apps and other things on the phone such as - APS 293MB, Pictures 550MB etc.. But added up it only amounts to maybe 3GB.. So I seem to be missing 13GB of space..
What I think may have happened (and I dont know how to fix) is.... Is it possible that I did the back up of my stock rom & titanium back ups etc.. all onto my internal SD card ? I didnt back anything up to an external drive or my PC, becasue the instructions I followed did tell to do that, nor how to do that.
So if that is the case I would like to extract those file from the SD card on my phone to creat some more room ?

Even if you did backup everything to the internal sd, a cwm backup is usually about a gig and I have 100 and change titanium backups and it also takes up about w gig so I don't think that is the problem. You should be able to hook it up to your PC and check the folder sizes on your SD card. You can also move the clockwork mod folder and TB folders to your external sd but you will need to set up the new location in TB's preference s option. If all else fails backup everything and copy all pics vids downloads and everything else you want to your PC or external SD, and wipe everything from your phones settings menu. This will wipe all data and game data too so be careful to get everything off it you want. Oh yea, make sure you have sync'd or backup up your contacts. That's a pain in the ass.

I had a problem like that when I first got my s3 last year and for me it was 2 files in the lost folder that were like 5 gigs each

Would it have anything to do with when after I rooted and was installing CWM and the new ROM.. It said for me to back up and save my old original ROM/configuration.. Which I did select back up.. But I didnt save it to my PC, I believe it just saved to my phone somewhere.. If I may need that someday I should likely save it correct ? Can someone give me an idea how to access those files so I can transfer off my phone ?

I don't recall ever seeing that option but it was awhile ago. You could try grabbing a root explorer and look around for a large folder. Es file manager for example. I kept my stock backup for awhile but never needed it. You can always find a stock image to reflash with Odin but I'm paranoid and keep at least one cwm backup in case. You could reflash the ROM you put on when you rooted and choose not to select backup this time. It will clear the phone so as above be sure to transfer or save anything you want. Get a little bit used to the process of backing up apps and reinstalling them when you switch roms cause these devs are awesome and always have new features to try. It goes pretty quick after you do it a thousand times. What ROM are you currently using?

There is a free app called storage analyser in the play store. I didn't try it but it looks like it will break down what is stored and where. Could help in this situation. Your internal SD should pop up on the computer so if the problem is in there you shouldn't need a root explorer to find that. If its not in there maybe to a cwm backup to external sd and flash something new.

what program did you use to flash the ROM? how many times have you flashed a ROM (specifically 4.2.2 ROM)?

I have only flashed once.. Using a tutorial from XDA, I rooted using ODIN, I installed CWM v6.0.3.0. followed by flahsing CM10.1 Rom. (10.1 -20130414-nightly-d2att)
During the tutorial it said I should back up my existing stock ROM incase I ever want to go back, so from CWM I seleced back up/restore then selected back up. It didnt tell me how to find this file and save to my PC or somewhere safe.. so is it possible that there are a bunch of files still on my S3 that I cannot see from just plugging it into my pc ?
I would really like to do this properly and remove everything from my S3 and just start with a fresh ROM again.. and know that what I need to have backed up was done properly onto my PC or somewhere other than my phones SD card. pls help = )
I just remembered a problem I ran into while performing the above steps.. I dont know exactly what happened but I think the version of CWM may have been old.. so I tried to update or install a newer version (followed another tutorial) is there a change there is the old version still on SD card ?

Do you have a micro sd card? This would allow you to completely wipe the device and install your OS

Yes I do have one I can install. (2GB) would you be able give me a list of the steps on how to do this properly ? (or link to a post that does)
Also, I do find I ejoy the CM10.1, is the verion I have one that I should be running or is there a standard version ?

If you enjoy cm10, stick with it. I'm on tasks 4/23 release and its running beautifully
Place the rom and gapps on the sd card, get what you want off the phone and you should be all set.
Check out the link in my signature for more information on flashing. when you format /system, also format /data + media.
Before you begin, go in rom manager and update your cwm recovery. Latest is 6.0.3.1. Or download the one at the bottom of post #2 in my signature link and flash it in cwm (then advanced > reboot recovery to have it take effect before flashing the rom).

Ok, I got CWM updated to 6.0.3.1, I backed up apps with TB and saved file to ext SD and got all my pics/vids transferred as well.. Now I just have a couple questions.
1) When I originally backed up my stock ROM in CWM it would have saved to my phones internal SD correct ? Because I could never find it. I just did a back up again and I plug phone into PC and cant find that one either ? Where would the be going ?
2) Can you link me to a good version of CM10.1 for my model as well as the proper google apps.. I cannot locate.

If you backed up to your internal sd card then the location should be something like storage/titaniumBackup. Inside that folder would be an oddly dated folder with all the contents. Transfer that to your computer as well.
Cm10 and the respective gapps are in the original android development section. You can also find their stable and nightly releases on their website. Be sure to only use the ROMs for your device model

Ok I just installed new ROM and now its worse, now I have less internal room.
Here are the steps I have followed.. (obviously its not wiping my entire internal SD right ?)
- Wipe Data / Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache Partition
- Advanced --> Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Mounts / Storage - Format System
- Install Zip from SD --> CM10 file.
Once phone boots up, I go to Settings --> Storage - Here it says I have only 2.6GB of space available and I have absolutely nothing on my phone yet, fresh install.
Am I missing a step ?
