No, its a heavily modified fork of the Android Open Source Project(Android 4.1), with all the google stuff replaced with microsoft services.

Depends on what you mean with real Android, but it's based on android open source project so yeah i call it "real" Android but it's modified as f*ck so it doesn't look like Android at all but from beginning it is pure Android.

You can say that but Nokia heavily modified the AOSP and gave it a Windows + Asha UI and support for all kinds of APK's which can be installed from Third Party Apps like Blackmart and also Nokia is partnering with the store.Yandex.com (just like Play store) which has lakhs of Android apps available for download to it's Nokia X users.
Yesterday a Dev called Kashamalaga posted a guide to install full working GAPPS on Nokia X which allows you to have all Google Play services (including Play Store) on Nokia X.

But why does it use Android 4.1 instead of Andorid 4.3 or 4.4?

Using 4.1 shows that Nokia was working on this for a long time now, maybe from early 2013 onwards. Why they didn't update to 4.3 or 4.4 i dont know. 4.4 would be a much better option for the X as it is more optimized for low-spec phones.

Android has no "Google stuff" to be replaced. Android IS NOT GOOGLE. Google ADDS that to Android, and requires anyone releasing Android to pay a licensing fee to add Google Play Services.
It is in fact based on Qualcomm's reference design platform. QRD resources are still in the ROM.

The HTC Imagechip is used exclusive by the Sense camera, which is only compatible within the Sense framework.
There is NO camera for AOSP that makes use of it in any fashion.

Much like ALL of the SoC developers who actually build Android for our devices using closed-source, obfuscated hardware interfaces.
Qualcomm is closed-source. NVIDIA is closed-source. Samsung release parts of it, I believe.
Every company protects their work in one form or another. Can't say I have a problem with it.

Release AOSP means all drivers and proprietary binaries will be open source?
If that so we could try modifying camera drivers to get less compression on photos. It's funny how 12MPx camera makes 1.5-2.5MB photos, just like my old 5MPx nonOS phone :]
Thread moved to Xperia S General section.
I would request the section mods to close it if it's a duplicate. Thanks.
Nice, does anyone reckons this will get a release for everyone with an unlocked bootloader to use? This would stop me buying a Nexus 4.

Just read the article on Sony's blog. The AOSP project do not longer in the hand of JB Queru. Sony dumped the folder on their gitHub.
They also say that they can't release some proprietary binaries, but they work on it.
Technical status of the project
As for the current status and progress of the AOSP on Xperia™ S project, we actually have a lot of things working now. With the code we’re now making available on GitHub, AOSP now boots up, and we have the SD-card, Wi-Fi® and sensors working. And as you can see in the video above, internally we also have audio and the modem running. However, these functions require proprietary binaries that we cannot publish at the time being.
Going forward, the next steps are to replace some of the previously published binaries with source code, and to get Android 4.2 working on Xperia™ S. This can be used as a development platform, and as a base for the work of opening up source code for more modules. For the latest technical status, check out the project on GitHub.

I think it is available, but you need to compile the rom yourself. It's explained on the git page, but still need some skill if you don't know what you're doing.
Could someone please put up a link to their github?
So what does this mean for us, the end users? Getting Jelly Bean sooner? Easier for FXP to finish their CM10?

[Q] other operation system on arc s

I'm new member in this site and i want to know if possible to port other OS to work perfectly on xperia arc s
got bored from android and battary drain :crying:
In theory, it's possible but not feasible. You can run IOS on an Android phone but it won't work perfectly. Likewise if you tried to run Android on an IPhone, it's possible but not perfect. Rather than asking for a port of another OS, find ways to personalize your Android experience and solve the battery drain. If you are still bored or can't be bothered, I suggest you buy an IPhone.

That's not true, as long as the OS is based on a linux kernel and has the ability to build from source with drivers it should'nt be much of a issue.

Yes, I said it was possible, but not everything is served to you on a silver platter. You can build from source, but drivers are
still a big problem that stops the ported OS from working perfectly.

GPE is nice, and its cool that @santod040 released 4.4.4.(props for being fast and first to do so) might have to try this. 4.4.4 runs great on my N7
As for the over heating, those that were on CM were getting the over heating problem and although CM is technically AOSP its still highly modified AOSP. All the AOSP roms we have, besides bucks, uses CM tree. So they all inherit the same problems.

Yeah, it's still not the full source code for the 'L" platform though.
So it would take some hackery to make it work on the m7 and without "L" binaries and proprietaries for the m7, it wouldn't be all that functional, in my opinion.

Patiently Waiting
I've enjoyed experimenting with the current custom ROMS available now. Can't wait to see what comes about once Android L is officially out. Until then, I'll be patiently waiting.
Not Official
I have been using CyanogenMod 12, so it isn't "official" but I have enjoyed using it

Regarding Android L

Can devs port the L images of either N5 or N7 and make a ROM out of it or can devs do something with the system dump of the L ?
Porting from a N5 or 7 is next to impossible. It might be possible to build it from source. But kitkat was tricky too. I have faith in the awesome devs here so lets see when they manage to get it booting.

We can't build from source as L isn't merged in AOSP yet.

ART Came with KitKat as a Developer option for testing the new Run Time and allowing app developers to optomize their apps.
As mentioned above Android "L" needs to be merged with AOSP before we can build it from source. Some say that may happen in fall. I think personally Google should merge the preview so Developers can prepare for other devices instead of just Allowing Nexus 5 and Nexus 7(2013) users get to work on it.
Allowing it to be merged early would allow better feedback and preparing App Dev's for the new API's
