[Q] other operation system on arc s - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new member in this site and i want to know if possible to port other OS to work perfectly on xperia arc s
got bored from android and battary drain :crying:

In theory, it's possible but not feasible. You can run IOS on an Android phone but it won't work perfectly. Likewise if you tried to run Android on an IPhone, it's possible but not perfect. Rather than asking for a port of another OS, find ways to personalize your Android experience and solve the battery drain. If you are still bored or can't be bothered, I suggest you buy an IPhone.

That's not true, as long as the OS is based on a linux kernel and has the ability to build from source with drivers it should'nt be much of a issue.

Try the custom roms available in the development section, some like Super Jelly Bean are extremely battery friendly

I proposed a solution for his battery issues. As for the rest, we must have someone with good programming skills wanting to port the os. It is possible.

Yes, I said it was possible, but not everything is served to you on a silver platter. You can build from source, but drivers are
still a big problem that stops the ported OS from working perfectly.

Easier said than done, porting an OS requires more than just programming skill.

Well bechause it's not worth the effort pal, Android and IOS are the most flexible and best mobile operating systems to this day, it would be like downgrading, what would be next porting symbian?
There is a Windows 8 launcher available in the play store...
There might be some themes for this too, idk.
Windows Phone is just... bad... But not as bad as Sybian...

OOO you are totally right, I had a nokia x6 16gb before the Gio and Iv wasent satisfied with it, what goog is it to have a good camera or stereo speakers if there isen't any social suport if the ram is to bad managed and if the whole OS is not finger friendly...anyway windows phones by HTC and Nokia have nicley colored bodyes but with android it's all about the colores inside.....So pleace be happy with the android look, it's the best in the world
The symbian story is kinda funny, look it up on Wikipedia.
When nokia bosses were discussing to stop symbian dev(cuz it failed so badly), all developers quit themselves and got hired by one of nokia concurrents!
What a fail right?

I would just say, Microsoft is not experienced in doing such things. A little patience is required and Microsoft (maybe) will be also a developer of good phone soft. But until then, nothing will be better than android on the phones
But if you want to use it though: With a little experience of using mods and the connected apps, you will get an interface looking as nice as WP 8s.
But I can tell you: To get used to it is very difficult. I removed all the stuff, let's say a week after

[Discussion] : do you want Firefox OS on xperia s?

As the title said, do you want Firefox OS, on sxs?
Sony released the kernel(Linux 3.0.8) and system source of firefoxOS for xperia e , so porting should be possible
What do you think?

Porting isn't possible. It's impossible to port kernel from device which has different SoC. We have dual-core when E has single core.

You read it wrong. Only the system is from xperia e. The kernel will be using xperia s kernel. And since Firefox os uses Linux kernel, I think it can be ported.
Edit: and yeah, ofc I want to try the firefox os. It'll be very nice..

ooh.. you just dont want to say that you're wrong right? j/k.
well, the devs have source for xperia s kernel (the 3.0.8 one, from Sony, and/or cm10 kernel from fxp and others), and there is source from firefox os too. and you know, there is ubuntu touch for xperia s in the development thread right? it can be done, so why this (firefox os) is impossible?
still, i dont know for sure though, as im not a dev or anything. just using my logics

The kernel is very similar (90-95%) to the stock sony kernel , but it has firefox os patch and xperia E Soc(msm7227a) drivers .... I'll only include all the xperia s drivers and adapt the rom to xperia s hardware ... It's a dirty way , but I need first to get it booting , and next we can improve and fix it.

Yes.
It will be useless i think, you will loose your time to do it.
We already have too many great roms, what are working really good, and i think (that's my opinion) we do not need firefox os.
if its work why not
its always nice to have another new things
if you want any help pm me
It would be nice to try FirefoxOS on our phone
Firefox OS would be amazing! I heard rumors that they use the same drivers from Android. Would anyone have a clue where to begin?

FirefoxOs share a lot of part of the HAL from android.
We have to begin from the kernel, after we get it boot, lets start adapt the rom

It would be nice to try it out - it's always nice to have options to choose from. That being said, i doubt Firefox OS will catch on because even Ubuntu Phone OS will have wider audience and a bigger usage base.

I would say never, but who knows.
Maybe you didn´t notice but Arco is stopping developing ROMs for this device and I´m not sure there will be someone continuing his work. Beside this this device is already pretty mature with not that strong CPU and not that much ram newer Anroid operating systems will require to work smooth and stable.
Tomorrow.

well we can only hope...

Yeah, without sir arco it will be nearly impossible, i agree with that. We'd need a developer that would continue his job.
IMHO it does not really matter on how outdated the harware is. Software can always be optimized on any hardware, but has to have one devoted developer. Space Shuttle computers hardware in the past were not as heavy as nowadays, but still did their job because of software developed for that specific hardware. I think that's why it is possible to have Jelly Bean on devices like the Galaxy Mini. I've seen one working. Seemed to work flawlessy.
So hope never dies....

Up until now there wasn't so much of an incentive though, seeing that at best JB would have been a laggy novelty rom that was too heavy to be a daily driver. It's not so much the case now that 4.4 seems to be optimised especially for devices like ours! Maybe devs will be more eager to sink a few weeks more into it!
I'm trying to get GoogleNow home launcher to run on SuperJellyBean (4.1.2), but it won't work, Velvet.apk keeps crashing. Not sure what its missing, but working fine on my MK808 android stick with 4.2.2.

I am no expert or a dev but i think it is highly unlikely that 4.4 grants that much of a performance boost over 4.1+ on the Play

I've done practically nothing except read about KitKat since it was introduced, and I can promise you that performance of this OS will be much higher than any Jelly Bean roms.
The memory footprint required by apps and services has been trimmed by a large amount. Games on the PLAY will no longer run out of ram. There's plenty of documentation on the web right now explaining why this OS would be perfect for devices like the Xperia Play.
Anyway it would be very hard as you would have to make a kernel designed for it which will take some time and you would need to get the touchpads working and edit the build prop

[Q] Any custom KitKat rom with HDMI working

Hello, I will like to know if there is any android 4.4.x rom for the xperia S/SL that has the HDMI output working as well both cameras, until now I had tried Paranoid android beta 4 and Carbon the first one works flawless but has no HDMI and the second one is given me a blurry and bad signal trough the HDMI output.
Before keep installing a reinstalling roms I will like to hear any advice about any stable 4.4.X rom out there or at least any rom with HD camera recording, 3d graphic and HDMI output working.
Thank you.
We are on the same page bro. Been looking for that too.
And maybe any rom that has the radio drivers installed. cant believe now that i don hav that i actually want to use it
HDMI and FM radio, as well as many other features depend on the chipset OEM (Qualcomm) drivers. They offer support up to some Android version (last stock JB?), but AFAIK KitKat is not and will never be supported. They could also open the source code/spec for the drivers, which will enable the community to fix those issues, but I seriously doubt they will even consider it.

Sad but hey the google nexus 5 also has a snapdragon inside, that means there will be no future support for the nexus 5? I doubt that, there must be a way to get us those drivers.
Can I ask why the drivers are so important?? Why they cant be ported or rewritten by some dev? Like the drivers on linux, all are free and open, wtirren by devs and users. Is it impossible to write a driver for a snapdragon?
Sorry for my questions, im a noob

It is not impossible.
What devs COULD do is reverse engineer the drivers from 4.1.2 to 4.4 or whatever, but that would be REALLY hard, and take a LOT of time and tries. It simply does not worth the process.
But I think HDMI and FM Radio should come from Sony, not Qualcomm, not sure.

well, so there wasour hope ;d. I bet sony already forgot that they ever made Xperia S... Thay are making so many phones now... thats just crazy, if some1 buy flagship sony just after 2-3 months he had 2nd best of their models. thats insane. They havent even made kitkat for most of their current "flagships" yet. Xperia s [*].
BTW. Love u xda Devs, you are a little star that gives us hope to use nice phone even more efficient and cool than before .
PS. God i hate that 10post req for responding in dev-s threads... i have so many questions about my pureslim kitkat ;/.
I am tempted into sell my phone to buy a new one, but is so sad because I think Xperias in general have a pretty good hardware, my next phone will be a nexus or who knows... Maybe I will end up selling my soul to Apple at least they have longer support for any older phone...
The thing is I love to hack my phones that's why I got an Android in first place.
