[Q] rooted sch-r980 lost USB, charger, and ALL sound - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I picked up this US cellular sch-r890 that was never hooked up to play with. I put an SIM card in it and it rejected it. Anyway I wanted it as a tablet and didnt really care if I could hook it up as a phone or not and rooted the phone. All went well except now I have zero sound on it at all and the USB does not recognize anything. nothing from a wall charger either...However, it does respond in ODIN mode???? and I am able to charge it when the phone is turned off and plugged into usb. It cycles blue battery.. green battery...vibrate....repeat cycle, but it does charge it. I have tried several mods and NOTHING has changed my usb connecting. and yes USB devel is checked.. currently have it KK 4.4NIGHTLY and EVERYTHING runs fantastic....except USB/SOUND!!.
Any and all help with this would be appreciated. This would be a great lil gaming machine if it had sound.....and headphone jacks dont have sound either. its not a setting

also.....before I did all that I called straight talk to hook up the phone and they wouldnt do it....then I called US cellular as its their name on the phone and they said to go into the store in which I did. They ran the meid# and went in the back whipsered back and forth and said they couldnt do anything with it and didnt know where I got such a thing and should get my money back. $50 on craigslist explains a lot!!! lol. So I decided to beef up the lil tablet for a toy and the FN SOUND is KILLING me.

Cannot Sync - USB Device not recognized

i am getting an error message saying "USB device not recognized. One of the USB devices connected to this CPU has malfunctioned and windows cannot recognize it"
when i plug the phone in to the usb plug the charge light comes on for a sec, then i get that message and then the light goes off. I feel as thought i may have damaged the mini usb port (the cable is a snugger fit now) on my phone due to a drop, but it still charges thru the wall and has worked since the drop on the cpu, but now i am getting that message.
Help!
Are you having trouble making phone calls? I had this issue one time in my hermes, and its a brick now!
No, phone functionality seems fine...data and calls.
btw, the light also comes back on after the phone goes to standby.
Change the USB cable and see if it fixes it! If not, it might that the pins are getting a bit worn out in the phone.
don't have another cable to test right now, but the same cable works for another phone. not sure if that proves anything, but it's all i know for now

Yes. From past experience with various charging issues with different Hermes before (car chargers not able to charge unless powered off, then rebooting plugged in to keep the charge going), finicky usb cables, etc. ), I know that the hermes can be funny with charging/syncing to begin with. But since i had dropped it and it landed right on the port and bent it a tad, it really feels like something got damaged a bit. Not enough to eliminate the charging from working, but enough to give me problems....like this.
Example, i have never had this problem in the wall before, just mainly in the car, and even then it's usually when the battery is very low: When i plugged the phone into the wall last night, it wouldn't charge right away. once it went to sleep mode it started charging, but i i power it up the charge light goes off.

it work for me
thank you for the tip, but no luck still
in the "USB to PC" under your system settings, the box to "enable advanced network functionality" sould be checked by default, uncheck that box and you should be able to connect and sync through usb with no problem
I've done that...it feels like a hardware problem, but since the port works kind of it's hard to call it a hardware issue. techs i've talked to have said if it works at all then it must be software related

USB to Computer died. Please Help.

I had this phone for one week and the USB to Computer died. The computer no longer detects the USB device. The phone no longer displays USB mass storage or sync. Only Charging and headphones work. It's not the computer or cable because I have another touch pro 2 and it works fine. I've tried hard reset and pulled the battery for at least and hour and still no go. It worked the first 6 days since I've had it. I think the Tmobile 3rd party Car/Home Charger is the one that fried it. I let it charge overnight and noticed a message on the phone saying not enough power or something like that. For those who have the same charger, please do not use it to charge your phone at home. Use it for only emergencies in your car.
The bad news is I flashed the HardSPL. It still has the stock rom and radio.
Now my question is, should I take it to a Tmobile retail store and ask for an exchange? I originally purchased this through the phone with a Tmobile rep and had them ship the phone to me. I'm a Tmobile USA customer by the way. Or should I deal with 611 customer care. Or deal with HTC directly?
Solution here:
Get another USB cable. It used to happen if the cable quality not good.

I don't think it's the usb cable because the same cable works on the other tpro2. I've also tried the original cable from the other tpro2. Unless the OEM HTC cables are poor in quality.
Is there a way to flash the stock hardspl using the minisd card?
Have you looked at All Settings - Connection - USB to PC?
Disable the "Enable faster data synchronisation", most of the time this gives problems.
And at the bottom you can Enable "Ask me first..."
Sometimes this is disabled, and then it won't ask what to do.
it was happened to me the same happening , at last i change a cable then it was fine
why not try to change a cable and another PC ?
sometimes phone , cable and pc maybe not fit for a magical reason....
good luck
Ok, I've tried three different cables and three different computers and still won't recognize the usb device. I looked at the original HTC Charger vs the Tmobile dual mode car/home charger and there is a difference in output. The HTC has 1 amp and the Tmobile charger says .6amps for car and .5amps for home. Both are 5volts.
So I took the phone to a Tmobile Retail Store and was denied exchange. They told me they cannot accept an exchange because they have to go through the way I bought the phone, which was a phone order with a Tmobile Customer Service Rep.
Gonna try calling 611 later tonight.
Just got off the phone. They're shipping me a new one. No troubleshooting needed since it was within 14 days of purchasing.

Problems with A/C charging please help!

Ok, I've searched for a couple of hours with no luck, so please don't kill me if the answer is already out there.
I plugged my phone into the pc and transferred a couple of files, nothing malicious. Now, when I plugged it back into the A/C adapter that came with the phone, it won't charge. I tried it again on the pc and it charges that way. I tried my girls Epic charger (with the A/C adapter that it came with) and it started charging...for about a minute. Now that one doesn't work with the adapter either, only the pc. Does anyone know what the deal is? I need my phone for work, as I am in the car all day, but I am afraid to use the car charger because I fear that will stop working as well.
Please help if u can. If u have any questions, please ask. Thank you very very much!

Anyone? Im kind of desperate here

Kind of an odd problem, and I don't have specific knowledge of it. But just some random ideas ("couldn't hurt" type stuff): have you tried powering the phone off, than on again? Or try taking out the battery and putting it back, making sure its firmly seated, and all contacts are touching?
Thanks for replying. Thankfully, my phone accepted a charge from the car charger. I did try a battery pull and reboot.
I found out the hard way that whatever happened also screwed up some settings...for example, the phone did not vibrate when the alarm went off this morning. I went jn and manually changed stuff back to my settings.
So basically, I can charge the phone with its original usb on a computer, but it won't work when plugged into the AC adapter. I can use the usb/ac adapter from the Epic (yesterday I thought I couldn't...that was my mistake). Essentially it seems like the usb or phone itself damaged the adapter, so it will no longer work. Problem is, I don't know if it will happen again. I'm toying with just contacting tmo and getting the phone replaced, but I don't know if they will send a new one (I got my phone in october, a couple of weeks after released)

Have you tried using your charger to charge a different phone? It might be possible that your AC charger is busted?

That's what I'm thinking. Its pretty unusual for a phone to accept a USB charge and not an AC one (the reverse seems the more typical problem). And especially if a charger for a different phone works.
I'd ask T-Mobile for a new charger, and go from there.
Thanks again for the replies, I really appreciate it. Yeah, I tried using the ac adapter with the Epic, using both usb cords, all with no luck. I just don't know how this happened. Plugged into the computer, then into the ac charger (like a hundred times before) and it kills the ac charger? Weird, and I'm worried about it happening with a new charger...I'm still under warranty, does tmo send new or refurb phones as replacements, I wonder...lol. thanks again!

[Q] Help - Longer usb cable kills my phone signal

Been working fine since launch
today woke up and the phone was dead. Put the phone on charge via usb to laptop, as soon as i did my signal is lost and cant search. when i unplug it, after a few minutes signal comes back, then goes again when i plug it back in
Anyone else seen this?
wifi and bluetooth seem unaffected
OMG - I have just changed the usb cable and its working when plugged in (I bought a new genic one yesterday as i wanted a longer cable.) can anyone tell me what might be going on. i am unsure why the new cable killed my signal
Never heard of anything like this. But this will definitely be a marketing stunt for manufacturers.
Did you use the official USB cable when it started working normal again?
yes
never had anything like it happen b4. very weird
Definitely weird. I read somewhere that somebody their GN didn't charge when using a different USB cable.

[Q] Nexus nonchargeable, starts smoking(!), still turns on

Hey guys, I probably have a pretty unusual question or rather observation. Sometime yesterday night when I connected the Galaxy Nexus to the power outlet it started to make a crackling noise. I immediately disconnected it but it already smelled like burnt plastic. As you can believe I was pretty shocked! Trying to turn on the phone worked flawlessly though, so I though, OK might have been my outlet and tried two different ones. Still to no avail, the phone works but won't charge.
I turned it off for the night and waited until the morning to try to connect it to my computer (thinking maybe it's the plug that's broken) and reset it to factory default. Big mistake! Windows pops up with a warning telling em that it detected a power surge on one of my USB ports, resulting in my phone still not charging, the USB port being broken (won't recognize my USB key anymore), and and the Micro-USB connector emitting some smoke after I unplug it from the Nexus.
Now, enough storytelling. Maybe you guys can help me with the mountain of questions I have after this episode:
A) Really, what happened here? I don't think it has something to do with the software side of it, can it? (eg Battery overloaded?) Then I would guess more people would have had the same problem... I'm running AOKP M3 and Franco Kernel 3.0.08-M1.
B) Did anyone have the same problem?
C) I guess it's unfixable from a software standpoint, so my only option would be to send it back to Amazon and hope they replace it. Any other ideas? I bought it at Amazon.de (Germany) but due to it having AOKP Rom and Franco Kernel installed getting a replacement might be difficult.
C) How do I get my USB port functioning again? It's a new notebook but I don't want to send it back for repairs as I bought it in Hong Kong (I have an international warranty though.) and need it to write my Thesis.
Update: Uninstalled and re-installed the USB drivers, that fixed the USB port.
Thanks for your time and hopefully help!

A) Sounds like a short circuit somewhere. My guess would be the connector or close to it.
B) I certainly didn't but I'm sure it's happened to someone.
C) Unroot and Relock and send it back to Samsung if Amazon doesn't take it back. I'm not sure about their return policy since it's a cellphone that is under warranty. May also depend how long ago you bought it.
The more I think about it I wonder if it's just the USB cable... Since you said the smoke came from the Micro-USB connector... Plug it back into the computer without the phone and see if you get the USB power surge thing again. There may just be a short in the cable.
Of course checking it with a multimeter would be safer, do you have one of those?
Or do you have another Micro-USB you can try charging the phone with?

The problem is that I can't even unroot it since it is not being recognized by the computer (and I get the power surge warning). I will try with the new cable, and then send it back even if it works. might give me problems further down the line if I don't.

I don't have a different cable (or multimeter) near me at the moment but will give an update as soon as I do. I didn't get the power surge warning when I just plugged in only the cable, but as there is no source that could draw power that seems likely to me.
P.s.: Just bought it in january so generally sending it back shouldn't be a problem - if I can get it unrooted.

Well that's "good" in that we know the cable isn't shorted. I thought maybe some pins or wires were touching inside the cable that would cause a short (+5VDC and GND) even without the cable being plugged into anything.
So it does look like the fault is in the phone somewhere... And that could be just about anything.
Being that it's Amazon they probably will just replace it and not even bother with checking for it being rooted - especially since you can say it's smoking. As far as I know only the carriers will turn on the phone and look it over (not to mention most Amazon employees wouldn't know root it it reached out of the phone and smacked them across the face). Other 3rd party stores just mark it as defective and put it in a box to send back. I'm not sure how Amazon's return process works though.
I had several problems with my EVO (speakers mostly) and had it rooted when I took it in. They just fixed it anyway and even told me they liked what I had done with it a few times.
Hey, just to give an update I didn't get a specific explanation but Amazon replaced the battery, cable & charger. Now its working again. No problems with it being rooted, they even left rooted but installed stock android & kernel.
I'm currently having this problem, i called google, and they transferred me to samsung. And their department that handles this issue is closed on weekends

any update? i'm having this problem aswell. my phone wont charge through the wall charger but will when connected to a computer... but when it's connected to the computer it says that my usb device (phone) has malfunctioned.
because of that "malfunction" i cant revert back to stock everything and relock everything to get it repaired with bell mobility.

when i sent them my phone i couldn't bring back to stock software but i still shipped it out either way, i actually got an email from samsung today saying a component has been replaced and being shipped out back to to me, so i guess they fixed it with it being rooted, so when i receive it ill let you know
Well I got back my phone today and its charging again. But they restored my phone back to factory setting. So I lost all my pics and phone didn't restore previous apps etc but oh well as long as they fixed it and no questions asked I'm happy
