Hi there. This is my first xda post but i've been playing with rooted phones for a while now. I have a T999l that i just got and i was able to connect to my pc to root no problem. i ran for a week on a custom rom and it connected fine. yesterday i tried to connect to pull pics and i got no pc connection at all.
What Ive tried,
Several cables,
new drivers
download mode and adb both failed
mobile odin to stock, flashed fine but still no connection
Phone charges fine and software seems fine.
I really need to find a solution as this phone is used for work.
History:
phone is an insurance issued phone less than 2 weeks old. i dropped it in a case and screen cracked. next day i lost pc connection.
could this bee software related or if hardware what are my options outside of a 2nd insurance claim?
any help would be greatly appreciated
my stats:
Samsung Galaxy S3 t999l
S3RX 3.0
4.3 bootloader :/
I'd check to see if your mini-USB port is borked. It will still charge fine but if the 11th pin is borked, the phone won't connect.
Unless you have not done so already, try another PC.
Thanks I did try another pc. Ill pull apart my usb connector and inspect it but I think ill just have to do another insurance claim

Here's my situation:
SAMSUNG EPIC 4G
I've updated roms without problem many times since buying my phone. I am currently on 2.3.4, gingerbred eh06. I cannot get the usb to work with my pc at all. I'm assuming that since the phone still charges, the usb is functional? I was going to try a flash back to stock ec05, but cannot do this because I don't seem to have CWM installed. I did, don't know what happened to it. All it says when doing a cw boot is android system recovery <3e>
I tried to follow the link for rooting my phone without a pc, but cannot get it to work because I don't have superuser access. I did but don't know what happened there also??? Apparently gingerbreak doesn't work on 2.3.4 from what I am finding. I'm about at the end of my rope here and am looking for somebody to throw me a bone. ANY IDEAS.
I should also tell you that I know the cables I have are good. I have 2 samsung and 4 aftermarket cables and they all work. My wife has the exact same phone and works every time, with every cable. Of course her phone hasn't had any "custom" work done to it if you know what I mean...
Try Heimdall. It installs its own drivers and is more robust. Post 2 in Development stickie of how to fix a semi-bricked Epic.

Tried that just now, didn't work. When I tell it to list devices, it comes up as unknown device and won't install any drivers. tried my wife's phone and it seemed to work just fine. Maybe the phone can charge with a broken usb port?????? AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so you have no root and no odin/heimdall?
Yes it can charge with a bad port or a bad cable. Since the cables are good some of your usb port may be damaged somehow. Did you check for dirt or debris in the port?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Right, neither works. Its not the pc either. Tried win 7 64 and 32 bit, xp pro, ubuntu, joli os. Nada
Thought about tearing down phone and looking for dirt/debris. Just loking for all possibilities. I did fing a usb port on ebay for about 50 bucks, doesn't really look like something I could replace myself. ;'m assuming that it's soldered in.

I believe non warranty repairs like that are only $35 at Sprint.
Good job Sprint
Just left the Sprint store and they gave me a new phone. Tried like hell to get an upgrade to the Galaxy IIs, but no go. I gave them a boo hoo story and even told them i'd settle for the Nexus s, but they wouldn't budge there either.... Oh well. At least I got a new phone out of the deal. Kudos to the Sprint store and their employees though.
This happened to me at first too, then my phone stopped charging the battery. Maybe this is a sign of the port actually going out? Right now, I'm waiting on my replacement through Sprint without a charging phone.
I was able to finally get a good working combination of my brother's Evo cable and Odin 1.7 to flash back to stock for warranty work.
OK, so I rooted my 4G Touch and everything was going along smashingly until I let my son play a game on it and he tried to plug the charger back in and broke the tip of the cable. Thankfully, it wasn't broken off inside the phone, but now ANY USB cable isn't recognized when I plug it into my laptop. The phone will charge, but I can't transfer data. I tried swapping cables and changing ROM's, but to no avail. I need to know if anyone else has had this happen and how were you able to fix it. If not, any idea on how I can unroot since Odin will not work without the USB connection? I would like to be able to send it back and have it warrantied, but I can't unless I can unroot it first.
Thanks!
I had the same problem but not from a broken usb cord.. I lost all usb recognition from flashing a botched gsm rom on a cdma phone..
I can tell u this take it in to a service center the reason being they give two cents less.. That its rooteD .. they are theyre to do a hardware repair not software.. them guys are good at what they do... they even add insurance on the spot if you dont have it.. just hand them the device tell em u think usb ports bad and say nothing else... .
I flashed bad software and they ended up installing a new motherboard in ten minutes i signed a Paper and was all set
thats my advice ..no real need for a replacement. They have more parts then phones .
Good luck

Hi All,
My SGS2X no longer connects to any PC for anything other than charging.
I've tried everything, trust me. I've come to the conclusion that it is defective and want to return it for a new one. The problem is that I have rooted it and need to undo this before I return it. Telus told me it would need to be sent to Samsung for testing before they will give me a new one, so I need to unroot before I allow this.
Is there any way to unroot without a USB connection to a PC or am I screwed?
Thanks,
Mael
you might want to send it in for repair, to have the USB port replaced
Try using a different wire this same thing happened to me i believe

You might haved tried that tho try another to be safe

every time my phone drops to the floor while plugged in, the first thing i always worry about is the usb port
because of those issues reported above
Tried different cables, same problem.
Same cables work with other devices and other phones...
Phone has never been dropped, plugged in or not, so must be a defect.
Seems like a defect to me and thus covered under warranty, only prob is that it's rooted, voiding the warranty. Hence the question on unrooting, but I don't think it's possible.
I may just put up with it for now... It's a hastle not having access to USB storage, but I can work around that. Once I decide what I want for a second phone (Nexus or Note), I'll buy that, then brick the GS2 and go for warranty replacement then...
Pain in tha a$$, but thems tha breaks...
just ... never mind
i was going to suggest Odin, but then i remembered, sheet no USB, no can't do
the stock rom can't be flashed form CWM on the external sd card? I didn't realize that ODIN was required to put back to stock. Just wanted to clarify this.
Have you tried blowing out your usb port on the phone with some compressed air ???
Had a friend of mine , brand new phone, his USB just stopped, it would charge, but nothing else ... Screwed with it for hours, then he blew it out, and it worked ..
Sometimes your phone just wants a good blow job, just like the rest of us ...
(yeah yeah rude crude and socially unacceptable , but hey still funny) ...
Never thought of that... I'll give it a try...

This thread describes a method for flashing a stock kernel and (somewhat) stock ROM by flashing the files with CWM. You won't need your USB port, I just don't know if the stock ROM linked to in that post, will pass for "stock" on your Telus SGS2X. It may be good enough to pass for a warranty exchange/repair, etc., or there may be a stock Telus ROM floating around that is CWM flashable.
Good Luck..
Have u tried the samsung usb cable that came with your phone? ive found samsung phones to transfer data with the stock cable...everything else just charges the phone....just a suggestion

Tried the compressed air, no effect.
The ROM on the phone is stock, all I've done is root and install CWM.
To al appearances the phone is stock, but for the presence of superuser and CWM.
Tried the original cable, no difference...
Telus told me to go where I bought the phone, so I'm going to try going to BB and raising a stink, see if they will replace it...
By bb u mean bestbuy im sure they will they are awesome with returns well atleast the one by my house i like there no questions asked hahaha

Sooo. I'm posting for my friends sake. His red charging light won't turn off. Also we can't connect the phone to any laptop because it says that the USB device is malfunctioning. I have the drivers and everything on the laptop so it should connect but it just won't. Is there anyway to unroot the phone without using a computer so he can take it to the sprint store so he can get it repaired? They won't repair the USB cause its rooted. But I can't unroot with my computer because the USB connection is borked. Any help would be appreciated!

I heard you can use mobile Odin to flash one of sfhub's one click fixes. Check the forum, someone posted about it a couple days ago.
EDIT: I think this was the thread

Even if the phone is rooted they are still supposed to fix it. Why do some stores give people such issues over root? At least have them flash it to stock. Or get mobile Odin and flash a stock rooted rom. If the store is turning you down over a custom rom, they probably won't know the difference.
Edit: also, clean your USB port. Make sure its not bent in there and touching the side of the port.

I appreciate the help man. I'll let him know ASAP.
I am now having this same problem with my phone. Something is making contact somewhere in the usb port and it's causing the phone to auto reboot back on when I shut it down and/or think that it is constantly connected to a usb cable. I can't connect to anything other than a charger therefore I can not flash back to stock. I'll be taking it to Sprint and crossing my fingers.
I've gotten my phone back to complete stock with Mobile Odin and .tar file of stock EL29 i had laying around. If you need a copy, PM me.

Sprint has ordered me a new phone. There is no easy fix for this.

Hi everyone- I have searched and have looked everywhere. I just wanted to get someone's thoughts on how I could get my phone back to stock. My mini-USB port on my phone is damaged- I can't charge it unless powered off and it can't connect to my PC. Trust me I've tried multiple cables, have the drivers installed on my PC, and its not my USB ports on my PC. Since I can't connect via USB to my laptop I can't use ToolKits that are available
My phone is currently rooted and has a Unlocked bootloader. Are these the steps I will need to go through to bring back to stock so I can return to Verizon?
1. Flash Verizon stock ROM through CWM Recovery. Rom is found here:
"[ROM] mROM v2.0 JellyBean 4.1.2 JZO54K for Verizon - stock, rooted + MODs"
2. On Google Play I downloaded Segv's tool ("BootUnlocker for Galaxy Nexus") to Lock Bootloader
3. On Google Play I downloaded "Android Root Toolkit" to flash Stock Recovery.
4. Un-install app "SuperSU" and "Superuser"
Does this process look right? Any help would be appreciated!!!
FYI I did look at the following (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27945515&postcount=128) but nobody has commented on it to verify it works.
UPDATE: In my last attempt I used the pliers and squeezed the micro-USB end and my laptop recognized it!!! I swear I did it before but i guess i didn't squeeze enough. Now that my laptop recognized it and was able to use the toolkit and bring back to stock and locked bootloader.
I am having the exact same issues you are. Looking forward to an answer
I had the same problem and had followed all your steps, various cables ect... try squeezing one of the mini USB cables a little with pliers! So the little gap is a little hard to push on to the phone. This worked for me!

I think I saw a post where you mentioned you did that and it worked for you. I tried squeezing a cable end already :-/ no dice

Be careful when you are doing dev stuff with a spotty USB connection. If it loses connection at a bad time (which anytime is always a bad time), you could end up with a brick.
I would also try cleaning out the USB port with a sharpened toothpick. I read this on Lifehacker, and they said it gives a much better connection.

Next time remove battery, clean usb port with alcohol and tooth brush, let it dry and reboot. Micro USB ports are not up to what they are being used for. Stupid Samsung. I don't think I've had a smartphone in the last 4 years that's lasted a year without something breaking .
Not a fix for your micro-usb not working.....but you can download airdroid from the play store and transfer files from your laptop to your phone and visa-versa. Its a free app and works just fine for me transferring files when i don't have a USB cable on hand

I believe dropbox serves the same purpose and is arguably easier to use.
Update: Went to Verizon last Friday and they didn't even check to see if my bootloader was locked. The person didn't even check much other than seeing if my phone charged (which it didn't). I did have the extra service warranty so he just had a new one sent to my house and didn't give me any grief.
Looking to unlock, root, and flash a ROM tonight
