z1c touchscreen issues? - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello z1c owners.
Have you guys noticed weird behavior with the touch screen? Sometimes it doesn't pick up input or lags a lot. Especially when browsing the web, it'll flick up/down randomly.
I am wondering if this is normal due to IPS display because my iPhone acts the same way. Annoying.

I have noticed the same thing when pulling the notification draw down. It does this flickering effect then snaps the draw back to the top of the screen. Weird. I then have to pull the notification draw back down again. Anyone else notice this?

Exact same behavior on mine too. Super annoying. I got this phone since I felt it'd be more practical for one hand and so far it has been a poor experience.
I factory reset through pc companion hoping that it would fix this and zero success.

Yep. Also surfing the Web it'll flick down or up when I'm just normally swiping up or down.
You guys think a software update can fix?

It reminds me of the xperia ion I had. The touch sensitivity is weird compared to other phones I have had. Has anyone tried the glove mode to see if it helps?

this may software related or screen protector.

I noticed something similar esp on the unlock screen: I thought I drawed a solid line, but the panel apparently missed some connections randomly.
This effect was way worse on the AUO panel, the JDI one behaves OK.
Don't know how to find out which panel you have?
open a terminal emulation app (e.g. this one) and enter the following commands:
Code:
cd /sys/devices/mdss_dsi_panel
Code:
cat panel_id
the first three letters of the reply show the manufacturer

Does it mean, that auo display is worse than jdi?

I see that some places/people have posted comparison images of the brightness level of the different panels. For me it doesn't seem to be a huge deal. I haven't had my device over 50% brightness even in broad daylight. At night I crank it all the way down and still feel blinded. I'm a little concerned with the touch sensitivity but I guess I will adapt to it just like I did with the xperia ion.

I wouldn't dare making a general statement here, but for me it was.
The people on Xperiablog compared both panels a while ago...
I had the chance to do the same and I kept the JDI - others might come to a different result though.
Sensitivity was a minor issue for me, but the colors just didn't fit on the AUO - see attachment (the Xperia S on the right is by coincidence slightly out of focus, AUO panel is in the middle, JDI is left)

And? Do you have issue with touch?

Touch related problem is definitely there. And it is somewhat related to software.
I managed to improve it by manually closing down background services and cached processes.
But it is a shame to design it in a such way that it depends on processor load.
And what's the point of having quad-core device if it cannot even handle hardware monitoring tasks?
Is it really that difficult to make things properly?
Adding bloatware is the only thing they do proudly well... With no chance to shut such crap off in a legal way.

Definitely software issues with touch on sony firmwares. Pulling down the notification bar doesn't always register and rolling my thumb on the screen to lazily scroll a webpage registers as a zoom. Same on the tablet z.

Two Defective Screens in a row. And I bet you have the same issue.

I'm calling all the GN owners to check your screen to see if you could duplicate the same issue I have on my TWO GNs.
Step:
1. Manually set your screen brightness to lowest brightness.
2. Go to a complete dark environment like in your closet or test this at night with all the ambient lights off. Again in a COMPLETE DARK ENVIRONMENT, this is crucial to duplicate the issue.
3. turn on the Camera app and look at the screen.
After your eyes adjusted to the darkness, you will see a bunch of nasty scattered pixel blocks. It's like pouring inks on your screen.
This pic says it all. From forum member sunnyshirz from this post:

Both my phones ordered from expansys-USA and Negri Electronics have the same issue.
I do this about 7 times a day, it has to be a common use case right?
Seriously, do you see the insanity of recreating this non-problem? Just think about it.

The screen image attached to the OP of this thread also suffers from the same issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366878&highlight=test
How many more of you have this?
I haven't checked mine yet. But I don't really use my phone in the closet with the lights off, so for me, and how I use my phone, my phone kicks ass
I did use it on lowest setting with light out in bed last night for a few mins, and saw no dots. So it probably has something to do with the camera and what it is seeing in total darkness. Since it is not an infared camarea, I see no problems with that either
I tried this and couldnt see spots, mine does have the right edge slightly tinted issue though. All amoleds have variations theres over 200 pages in the galaxy s2 forum.

If you set your wallpaper to black/grey you will see it at your home screen.
I spotted this issue when I was playing with my phone before bed, it is definitely not a Camera app issue, it's something hardware related. Like I said before your eyes need to adjust to the darkness in order for you to see those dots.
This is pretty annoying if you use your phone at night with all lights off.

Sounds like a classic case of someone looking for a problem. If a person has to take all the steps the OP described to recreate a problem, then it isn't a problem. Nothing to see here.

This is correct. And I think an easy solution would be to put the brightness at 15-20% instead of the lowest so you don't see whatever it is you see
try installing dead pixel from the market then check it that way. My is solid black, no bleeds at all.

This.
You can pretty much obsess over and examine any product long enough until the following realization occurs:
OMGDEFECTIEVE!!
It's really unfortunate that the OP cost the retailer/Samsung money going through a few phones for an obsessive compulsive microscope discovery about a real non-issue. Results in higher prices for everyone.
Ridiculous.
I think here's how you get to the bottom of this. Go online and google search absolute black. Save the 7th image on your phone. Then go to the saved image in your gallery and zoom in on the top left corner of the picture while in a completely dark room. If it looks weird, then your phone may have a problem, but if not, then STOP LOOKING FOR THINGS TO HATE.
This is a great phone, why try to ruin that. My guess is that the issue you're seeing is because of the camera. It's horrible in lowlight settings.

I don't have a GN yet so can't replicate your method, but if it happens when you use the camera app, don't you think it could have something to do with the camera? The camera gain will be all the way up in total darkness which will produce weird pixelations.
If you're trying to get solid black on the screen to evaluate the display, I am sure there's an app that can do that. Or simply make a web page with all black.

Hah!
Same thing with my gsalaxy s2. There are also other "strange" effects on gs2 screen at lowest levels. I think I saw something like that at note subforum. So I guess it is more or less normal for every amoled screen.
I can reproducethis issue, but I never experinced it in day to day usage. It is no problem for me.
Ok guys. Thanks for all the negative comments.
If your phone has no problem then good for you. I couldn't stand for this issue because I can notice it fairly easy in low brightness condition, I have tried to increase the brightness to around 40% and I can still see it. And again this is not a camera caused problem. I first noticed this when I was using Google Music to play some songs at night. The problem pretty much exists under any pure dark background.
Please look at the pic I posted, Does this look like "normal" to you guys if you were in my shoes?
This is an AMOLED issue. Just keep the screen step above minimum and its completely fine. Phone is not faulty, that's how that screen works. AMOLED is also more noisy on lower brightness, that's not a faulty screen.
I don't have this issue. My screen looks great and is from Expansys. What do I win? Your phone does look pretty bad though, maybe exchange it again?

first display pixels line problem

Hi all, since a couple of days ago I found a strange problem with my Nexus display.
The first line of the display has an higher illumination respect the rest of the pixels.
The problem is worse when the image displayed has light color, so it's better with dark color.
I have Cyanogenmod10 but I don't think it's the problem, because I try with different version of ROM/firmware, and I have the same issue even in the recovery console.
Had someone experience this issue?
The top of the device right?
If so, i had it too.
Mine has lower illumination on the top and bottom of the screen, also using cm10

Yes the top most line (in portrait mode) is lighter than all the others. If you have a dark background you see less difference, with light background you see much more difference. I'm trying to wipe cache and reset to factory default to see if there's something different

I've also got this problem, it might not be that easy to see on the picture I've attached, but you can at least see that the colors are not the same. I've also tested the screen with an app called Screen test, and it seems to completely fail the Checker board test under Resolution and Horizontal resolution (1 pixel) makes the display flicker.

Yeah, but I'm not sure if it's due to the HTC Color Enhancement, or if the screen is bad. The stores says it's just a different color temperature on the screen.
The the light in the proximity sensors are IR captured by the camera, so I can't see it (except through another camera ofc)

Burn in

I'm worried about burn in with the on screen buttons. I know it's been an issue in the past with nexus 6p and other amoled panels, any way to prevent this issue? I'm used to capacitive buttons on Samsungs that prevent this
No way to prevent it, AMOLED = burn-in.
(On Nexus phones, at least)

You just don't see it.
I have seen it in ALL the Nexus 6P I had in my hands.
I always disable the onscreen buttons and use app like "Swipe Navigation" in the play store. It prevents the bottom burn in and frees up more screen real estate. It's really the main thing i use root for now days on amoled displays.
I have ZERO burn in on my 6P as well and I am pretty attention to detail when it comes to these things.
How do you disable the on screen buttons. Would this just mean you would swipe up for them to temporarily appear?

Lol. That's a little presumptuous. Even if you are right, if it isn't noticeable to him, who cares if it there or not?
If you are that OCD, you should probably just stick to LCD - as OLED technology is all similar in burn in susceptibility.

You have to have root to disable them. That particular app doesn't show them when you swipe up. You just swipe in that area and you will trigger the designated button that you assign.

Use a "dead pixel" app to make the whole screen appear without the navigation buttons and put it on a white or grey screen.

That does not help at all. Quickly turning on and off subpixels has no effect on burn-in, only on image retention (which is more or less "non permanent" burn in). It in fact does more harm then good, reducing the overall screen life by 90 minutes every night. Amoleds have the tendency to lose color accuracy in time, due to the blue subpixels depleting faster.

I agree. You at least need to have the phone for 2 years or more for you to notice it without having it look for it. I had my 6p for a year with more than normal usage and you really have to look pretty hard to see it. Almost have to imagine it's there in order for your eyes to pick it up. Interestingly the status bar had no burn in from what I could tell.

It definitely burns in. I use Car Home Ultra when I drive with the display at full brightness, and I got it bad.
I actually made a video about it on my Youtube channel - https://youtu.be/zwosaQWffI4
If this happens to you, I recommend you contact Google and get a replacement. I was able to do this without a problem. My argument was that there was no warning or documentation about using your device like this.
Best way to prevent visible burn in is to get a rotation app that lets you use your phone upside down.

Weird scrolling/touch sensitivity?

Anyone experiencing less than perfect touch sensitivity when trying to scroll quickly? Happens to me in Facebook, chrome, Gmail, etc. It doesn't fully register some of the swipes and makes it a short swipe/scroll motion instead of a long one. Wonder if it could be the screen protector that comes installed on the device? I have not tried taking it off.
Not the screen protector. I removed it and still get this issue. Best way to describe it - if I want to scroll down very quickly (like when I change pages here in a thread and want to get down to the bottom immediately) - swiping up quickly doesn't get me down to the bottom of the page as quickly as I'd expect. It's like it takes a few swipes sometimes to get a good fast scroll. I didn't notice this on the Pixel 2 XL. Wonder if folks are seeing this. Not a deal breaker but annoying at times.

Is it miss taps/fail to register touch or just slow swipe speed in software?
It's inconsistent speed in software. Sometimes it's a fast swipe, sometimes not. So it's hard to tell whether it's a hardware or software issue. Happens a lot for me in Facebook app.
I've noticed this a bit also when web browsing.
I agree that it seems inconsistent as to how/when it happens
I was coming here to post the same thing. Sometimes I have to tap something twice so it wil register... sometimes three times. I thought it was the screen protector too but now that i see this I'm not so sure. Is it something that's fixed with a patch? It's not THAT bad but it's kinda annoying.
I agree as well. It seems that sometimes it requires an extra tap here and there. It hadn't happened to me instead little while but it definitely happened. I was thinking about opening a thread about it a couple of days ago but got lazy lol
Sent from my ONEPLUS A5010 using Tapatalk
It seems to happen more to me in apps that are loading stuff like Chrome (with a long web page) or Facebook (in the feed). In contrast, Gmail is almost always perfect.
This makes me think it's a software issue. But FWIW taking off the screen protector made the screen more responsive for in general (I guess that's not surprising).
Curious to hear what apps are most obvious/problematic for folks.

For me it's mostly on third party apps but it's VERY sporadic. It happens every 1 out of 20 touches. Still kinda annoying but not a deal breaker for me. Also, I noticed it happens mostly when tapping things on the left side corners of the screen. Like the menu button of the citi bank app for example.
I think I will go with Samsung S8+ ...
I don't think it's a hardware issue. For me it's not screen location specific, and I only notice it when trying to scroll quickly in certain apps.

You can check it by enabling the pointerlocation draw in dev options. And see if it it make some weird pines or only dots sometimes when you swipe. If its the case and you have no screenprotector its a hardware issue. I had the same on op3t with the preapplied screenprotector only.
