I'm calling all the GN owners to check your screen to see if you could duplicate the same issue I have on my TWO GNs.
Step:
1. Manually set your screen brightness to lowest brightness.
2. Go to a complete dark environment like in your closet or test this at night with all the ambient lights off. Again in a COMPLETE DARK ENVIRONMENT, this is crucial to duplicate the issue.
3. turn on the Camera app and look at the screen.
After your eyes adjusted to the darkness, you will see a bunch of nasty scattered pixel blocks. It's like pouring inks on your screen.
This pic says it all. From forum member sunnyshirz from this post:

Both my phones ordered from expansys-USA and Negri Electronics have the same issue.
I do this about 7 times a day, it has to be a common use case right?
Seriously, do you see the insanity of recreating this non-problem? Just think about it.

The screen image attached to the OP of this thread also suffers from the same issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366878&highlight=test
How many more of you have this?
I haven't checked mine yet. But I don't really use my phone in the closet with the lights off, so for me, and how I use my phone, my phone kicks ass
I did use it on lowest setting with light out in bed last night for a few mins, and saw no dots. So it probably has something to do with the camera and what it is seeing in total darkness. Since it is not an infared camarea, I see no problems with that either
I tried this and couldnt see spots, mine does have the right edge slightly tinted issue though. All amoleds have variations theres over 200 pages in the galaxy s2 forum.

If you set your wallpaper to black/grey you will see it at your home screen.
I spotted this issue when I was playing with my phone before bed, it is definitely not a Camera app issue, it's something hardware related. Like I said before your eyes need to adjust to the darkness in order for you to see those dots.
This is pretty annoying if you use your phone at night with all lights off.

I have used my phone in the dark a bit. Kindle app set on black bg with brightness turned all the way down is the largest. I always have the brightness all the way down when using phone at night in bed so not to bother the wife. Have seen zero issues.

Yeah, I was using google books app last night in bed w/ no lights, set to night mode (black background). Saw nothing as well.
Check this site: http://fiddle.jshell.net/qfxsc/1/show/

My first nexus had many stripes from the bottom to the top but my second one is much better.
Sounds like a classic case of someone looking for a problem. If a person has to take all the steps the OP described to recreate a problem, then it isn't a problem. Nothing to see here.

This is correct. And I think an easy solution would be to put the brightness at 15-20% instead of the lowest so you don't see whatever it is you see
try installing dead pixel from the market then check it that way. My is solid black, no bleeds at all.

This.
You can pretty much obsess over and examine any product long enough until the following realization occurs:
OMGDEFECTIEVE!!
It's really unfortunate that the OP cost the retailer/Samsung money going through a few phones for an obsessive compulsive microscope discovery about a real non-issue. Results in higher prices for everyone.
Ridiculous.
I think here's how you get to the bottom of this. Go online and google search absolute black. Save the 7th image on your phone. Then go to the saved image in your gallery and zoom in on the top left corner of the picture while in a completely dark room. If it looks weird, then your phone may have a problem, but if not, then STOP LOOKING FOR THINGS TO HATE.
This is a great phone, why try to ruin that. My guess is that the issue you're seeing is because of the camera. It's horrible in lowlight settings.

I don't have a GN yet so can't replicate your method, but if it happens when you use the camera app, don't you think it could have something to do with the camera? The camera gain will be all the way up in total darkness which will produce weird pixelations.
If you're trying to get solid black on the screen to evaluate the display, I am sure there's an app that can do that. Or simply make a web page with all black.

Hah!
Same thing with my gsalaxy s2. There are also other "strange" effects on gs2 screen at lowest levels. I think I saw something like that at note subforum. So I guess it is more or less normal for every amoled screen.
I can reproducethis issue, but I never experinced it in day to day usage. It is no problem for me.
Ok guys. Thanks for all the negative comments.
If your phone has no problem then good for you. I couldn't stand for this issue because I can notice it fairly easy in low brightness condition, I have tried to increase the brightness to around 40% and I can still see it. And again this is not a camera caused problem. I first noticed this when I was using Google Music to play some songs at night. The problem pretty much exists under any pure dark background.
Please look at the pic I posted, Does this look like "normal" to you guys if you were in my shoes?
This is an AMOLED issue. Just keep the screen step above minimum and its completely fine. Phone is not faulty, that's how that screen works. AMOLED is also more noisy on lower brightness, that's not a faulty screen.
I don't have this issue. My screen looks great and is from Expansys. What do I win? Your phone does look pretty bad though, maybe exchange it again?
Some people are saying that my purple screen issues documented here:

That's not all. My first one was somewhat free of screen banding, but this one is riddled with it in every menu: http://i.imgur.com/j2oxB.jpg

When you look at the phone in the store tomorrow, and you go to settings, don't get scared away by what appears to be "banding" in the background image. It' just a poor quality image google has chosen to use as the background. See?

I received my 2nd Nexus today after the firsts' volume buttons stopped working. The new one has purple where black used to be, like yours, but doesn't make the experience any worse. However, when I pull the notifications area down on low brightness, the screen dims further - does this happen on yours? It's quite annoying...

on low brightness the notification tray is almost an opaque black
Same here but top bar gets even darker when notifications area is pulled down, even when brightness is set to 0. Whites are a LOT better tho.
Edit: just noticed that when taking photos, the brightness of whats being photographed affects the screens brightness. Also, top half of pages on tapatalk are a lot brighter than the bottom halves, it's strange and quite annoying once you notice it...

Hello
I`ve just noticed that my galaxy nexus has some wierd "ghost yellow menus" when everithing is white.
I have attached some pictures.
What can I do to get ridd of them?
Looks like screen burn-in, which is unavoidable with an AMOLED display. My GNex has similar banding from the notification bar, soft-key bar, and the address bar in Chrome (which is why I've stopped using Chrome and reverted to stock Browser.)
I don't know if there's a way to fix it, but the fact is that if you have a static image displayed on the screen, it will retain itself, much like a plasma TV.
Man I hate the blue burn in the notification bar and the nav bar
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium HD app
Isnt it the rest of the screen that have some kind of 'burn in' Or more specific, the rest of the screen is degenerated/worn? The yellow hue wasnt present on my first GN when I got it. I have two GNs, the newest is more bluish/cleaner white - crisper..

Rotate the screen every now and then. If yoru phone is still under warranty, you can ask Samsung to replace it for you. Hopefully the new batch or SAMOLED are less prone to burn in.
If this common on sampled screens why don't I have this issue ?

Yeah. The pixels of these displays wear out slowly but surely with use (and subpixels of a certain color - green, I believe, although I'm not 100% sure right now - wear out faster than the others), but since the notification and navigation bars are mostly completely black (meaning those pixels are turned off and barely get used at all) those areas don't get worn out like the rest of the display does. So it's not that the bars are "burned" into the screen, it's rather that those areas are in better condition than the rest of the display.

I was thinking that too but did you guys notice that when the screen is displaying back it is not absolutely black? The pixels do glow a little bit for faster screen switching (it was mentioned in some other posts). I think it could also be this static glow that causes the burn in.
What's this about a new batch? Did Samsung start using new displays with the GalNex recently?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Sorry, I meant like a production batch. Don't thing they will use new displays with the Gnex.
I have insurance thru VZW which gives me a 2 year warrantly. I already had VZW replace 2 Gnex's, because of screen burn in, and if I get burn in again, I'll have them replace it again. They really don't give you a problem with replacing the phone, just tell them you did all like troubleshooting methods like factory data reset etc. and the burn in remains. They will send you a "like new" refurbished replacement. All the replacements I have got have been in great condition. If you are under warranty do not tolerate screen burn in, get it replaced immediately.
I've seen 5 gnex and each one of them had different screen. I mean every one looked different, worse or better. It looks like producing a good quality amoled display is very difficult or Samsung has very low QA for them... I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Just use it... It's not that you often display static full screen gray background.

I think it's more common with the people who brag about their 3 or more hours of on screen time a day.
Those of us who are more like 30 mins to an hour a day of on screen time are not going to be affected near as fast.

Yes, unfortunately it's to be expected from AMOLED technology, at least for now. I've swapped several phones in the past and they all were either worse or slightly better than the first. Extremely few say they have perfect screens, and even then they probably haven't taken steps to make it more visible (if the pixels are completely turned off it will indeed be completely black) or they just don't have an eye for it. My own Note 3 also has this issue. Google "mura effect" for more answers.

Hi everyone, on my Galaxy Nexus I have MAJOR screen burn-in from the navigation bar. (black bar at bottom, back/home/apps) Whenever I turn the phone sideways (i.e. in a full-screen video or game), the navigation bar moves to the side as usual, and gets narrower...when it does this, I see a purple (why purple?) line that "fills up" where the navigation bar would be on portrait. Of course when it is portrait, this cannot be seen, as the navigation bar covers it. In ClockworkMod Recovery, at the bottom of the screen, I can see a strong burn-in of the navigation bar. It is incredibly annoying, and I heard that by displaying white on the entire screen for a long time (full brightness) this can be weakened or fixed. I have seen apps for this, but have no clue how long I should run them for. Is it REALLY possible to fix something MAJOR, or is it a "maybe..sometimes" or just a hoax?
you can try to take a snapshot of your screen and invert the colors of the image in a program (like photoshop online, idk). then you put that inverted image on your phone and view it full sreen.
I don't really know if this helps, but I read it somewhere when I had some sreen problems with my GNex (I sent it to warranty)

I'm not really sure how that would do anything. The rest of the screen is fine, there's only a problem at the navigation bar. Leaving an image like that might just burn in other colors. If it really was SAMOLED, then it should not have a burn in there at all...because it turns off "black" pixels. It's confusing and annoying.
Or try a Kitkat ROM with Google Experience Launcher which doesn't have the black nav bar and status bar...

maybe rest of the screen actually burned, so only not burned part is navbar and seems weird.
there is a tool: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.codefortravel.amoled_screen_burn_in it has an option, that makes all your screen black and your nav bar white, using it for a while makes your navbar also burned, so it would eventually catch other parts and be the same level in theory..

Did you buy the GNexus brand new? Reason why I ask is because you mentioned that the blacks doesn't seem like Amoled and how it glows in the dark.
I'm wondering if you or the previous owner had the screen replaced because of a crack and the screen was replaced with a LCD from eBay.

No, I got it off of eBay as a 'replacement' phone. This is my first smartphone (but not Android device) but I am still in a 2 year contract with Verizon and can't get an upgrade yet. It's not really a problem, just an inconvenience.
This was one of the reasons I always try too run in extended desktop mode(no on screen buttons/status bar) and use PIE controls instead.
Also helps running the stock browser in full screen mode.
Even after less than a few months of first owning my GN I've gotten a tiny little burn in on the bottom bar, but luckily it's not easily noticeable.
I have also got a burn-in. It's not too major, but it's there. Please do update us if you find any solution which actually fixes this thing.
I'm going to do some tests with different things.
I heard leaving a white image on full brightness for a long time will help, so I'm going to try that. Another thing I might try is color alternations for long periods of time to just get different colors all over the screen. Probably won't do much, but it's worth a try. I thought I'd also see what it's like using the phone locked upside down. (rotate upside down, lock rotation) This is the app I'm using if anyone else wants to experiment with it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.feetstech.screenburn
Wish me luck, I'll post what happens!
Update 1: I have noticed that on higher brightness levels, the burn is less noticeable. I left a white screen on full brightness for what was probably just over 2 hours, and it hasn't really seemed to help much. I'm going to try color flashing and see what happens.

before using that apps, my burn only a little transparent blueish, after using that apps overnight , my burn becoming a visible blueish :crying: also i think someone posted the same result as my gnex too.i think the only soluton is : just accept that burn in is the weakness of amoled screen., and considering to buy a the amazing n5 cuz its didnt use amoled thank God for that.
Are you sure the burn-in is persistent? Usually it goes away after a while.
Almost forgot I started this thread! I don't really know if the burn in apps helped any, but I've noticed that the lower the brightness is, the more imminent the screen burn is. Around 1% if you touch one of the navigation buttons it turns.......purple. Once you get above around 20%, it's more grey and natural....(not purple)
