No way to prevent it, AMOLED = burn-in.
(On Nexus phones, at least)
I've had my 6p for one year and do not have any noticeable burn in.

You just don't see it.
I have seen it in ALL the Nexus 6P I had in my hands.
I always disable the onscreen buttons and use app like "Swipe Navigation" in the play store. It prevents the bottom burn in and frees up more screen real estate. It's really the main thing i use root for now days on amoled displays.
I have ZERO burn in on my 6P as well and I am pretty attention to detail when it comes to these things.
How do you disable the on screen buttons. Would this just mean you would swipe up for them to temporarily appear?
More than a year with my 6P, no burn in as well.

Lol. That's a little presumptuous. Even if you are right, if it isn't noticeable to him, who cares if it there or not?
If you are that OCD, you should probably just stick to LCD - as OLED technology is all similar in burn in susceptibility.

You have to have root to disable them. That particular app doesn't show them when you swipe up. You just swipe in that area and you will trigger the designated button that you assign.

Use a "dead pixel" app to make the whole screen appear without the navigation buttons and put it on a white or grey screen.

That does not help at all. Quickly turning on and off subpixels has no effect on burn-in, only on image retention (which is more or less "non permanent" burn in). It in fact does more harm then good, reducing the overall screen life by 90 minutes every night. Amoleds have the tendency to lose color accuracy in time, due to the blue subpixels depleting faster.

I agree. You at least need to have the phone for 2 years or more for you to notice it without having it look for it. I had my 6p for a year with more than normal usage and you really have to look pretty hard to see it. Almost have to imagine it's there in order for your eyes to pick it up. Interestingly the status bar had no burn in from what I could tell.

It definitely burns in. I use Car Home Ultra when I drive with the display at full brightness, and I got it bad.
I actually made a video about it on my Youtube channel - https://youtu.be/zwosaQWffI4
If this happens to you, I recommend you contact Google and get a replacement. I was able to do this without a problem. My argument was that there was no warning or documentation about using your device like this.
Best way to prevent visible burn in is to get a rotation app that lets you use your phone upside down.

I'm calling all the GN owners to check your screen to see if you could duplicate the same issue I have on my TWO GNs.
Step:
1. Manually set your screen brightness to lowest brightness.
2. Go to a complete dark environment like in your closet or test this at night with all the ambient lights off. Again in a COMPLETE DARK ENVIRONMENT, this is crucial to duplicate the issue.
3. turn on the Camera app and look at the screen.
After your eyes adjusted to the darkness, you will see a bunch of nasty scattered pixel blocks. It's like pouring inks on your screen.
This pic says it all. From forum member sunnyshirz from this post:

How many more of you have this?
I haven't checked mine yet. But I don't really use my phone in the closet with the lights off, so for me, and how I use my phone, my phone kicks ass
I did use it on lowest setting with light out in bed last night for a few mins, and saw no dots. So it probably has something to do with the camera and what it is seeing in total darkness. Since it is not an infared camarea, I see no problems with that either
I tried this and couldnt see spots, mine does have the right edge slightly tinted issue though. All amoleds have variations theres over 200 pages in the galaxy s2 forum.

If you set your wallpaper to black/grey you will see it at your home screen.
I spotted this issue when I was playing with my phone before bed, it is definitely not a Camera app issue, it's something hardware related. Like I said before your eyes need to adjust to the darkness in order for you to see those dots.
This is pretty annoying if you use your phone at night with all lights off.

This is correct. And I think an easy solution would be to put the brightness at 15-20% instead of the lowest so you don't see whatever it is you see
try installing dead pixel from the market then check it that way. My is solid black, no bleeds at all.

This.
You can pretty much obsess over and examine any product long enough until the following realization occurs:
OMGDEFECTIEVE!!
It's really unfortunate that the OP cost the retailer/Samsung money going through a few phones for an obsessive compulsive microscope discovery about a real non-issue. Results in higher prices for everyone.
Ridiculous.
I think here's how you get to the bottom of this. Go online and google search absolute black. Save the 7th image on your phone. Then go to the saved image in your gallery and zoom in on the top left corner of the picture while in a completely dark room. If it looks weird, then your phone may have a problem, but if not, then STOP LOOKING FOR THINGS TO HATE.
This is a great phone, why try to ruin that. My guess is that the issue you're seeing is because of the camera. It's horrible in lowlight settings.

I don't have a GN yet so can't replicate your method, but if it happens when you use the camera app, don't you think it could have something to do with the camera? The camera gain will be all the way up in total darkness which will produce weird pixelations.
If you're trying to get solid black on the screen to evaluate the display, I am sure there's an app that can do that. Or simply make a web page with all black.

Hah!
Same thing with my gsalaxy s2. There are also other "strange" effects on gs2 screen at lowest levels. I think I saw something like that at note subforum. So I guess it is more or less normal for every amoled screen.
I can reproducethis issue, but I never experinced it in day to day usage. It is no problem for me.
Ok guys. Thanks for all the negative comments.
If your phone has no problem then good for you. I couldn't stand for this issue because I can notice it fairly easy in low brightness condition, I have tried to increase the brightness to around 40% and I can still see it. And again this is not a camera caused problem. I first noticed this when I was using Google Music to play some songs at night. The problem pretty much exists under any pure dark background.
Please look at the pic I posted, Does this look like "normal" to you guys if you were in my shoes?
This is an AMOLED issue. Just keep the screen step above minimum and its completely fine. Phone is not faulty, that's how that screen works. AMOLED is also more noisy on lower brightness, that's not a faulty screen.
I don't have this issue. My screen looks great and is from Expansys. What do I win? Your phone does look pretty bad though, maybe exchange it again?

No real way to prevent it, but you can fix it easily by using Screen Diagnostic from the Play Store.
Its not a burn in, but a ghosted image. I watch YouTube videos and keep auto-rotation on. However, when I replaced my last Nexus (because of ghosting) this Nexus hasn't had the issue and I've had it longer. It may just be an actual display issue. If you get the issue you can bug Samsung/Verizon/Sprint and they'll probably send you a replacement.

The only area where I have any type of "ghosting" is where the status bar sits, and even that isn't noticeable unless the brightness is cranked up to full on a white screen. I don't really worry about it. My Nexus S has it where the status bar sits and I haven't had the issue anywhere else on the screen.
I do... I do nothing. I just use my phone the way i like and have no issues. It's been nearly year and screen is absolutely fine.
First of all, if you got warranty, go get it replaced. They might do it! I broke my screen and I bought another one officially and it's PERFECT. ABSOLUTELY perfect! So try that first!
If that doesn't help, try playing with some color values and gamma options - This helped my previous screen from ghosting and all.

Some screens really are perfect
It's a defected one my man.
On amoled screens the pixels 'fade out' over time. The pixels basically get less intense the more you use them. Because the notification bar and the soft buttons on a Galaxy nexus have a black background these pixels are hardly used at all. The rest of the screen is. So the rest of the pixels wear out faster than those in the notification bar and the soft buttons. That is how the ghosting forms. So a new screen should have zero problems, but after a year or less, the effects can already be seen.
I had this with my Nexus One and now with my Galaxy Nexus, although the ghosting was far worse on the Nexus One. Next time no more amoled for me.
I just came across this tweet this morning and am wondering if anyone is already experiencing this on here.

It's probably image retention and not actually burn in.

Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
Not at all. I just activated immersive mode via adb anyways because I like the way it looks with the curved display and taking up the entire display. I also use unique controls to put a pie on the right side since the bottom of the screen is so low, it's easier to use a pie on the side to navigate for reachability with one hand.
To elaborate on your question, I have no burn in and no retention. People talked about burn in early on with the Pixel 1 (and XL), but mine still has none even though I used the on screen navbar.

LOL nice. It actually has more to do with Google's ingenious idea of making the navbar/statusbar black vs some dynamic color or transparent. That causes uneven wear of the screen and burn-in occurs as a result.

not defending the screen at all (sending mine back, not RMA, just return for money back because of the extreme blue shift), but i had the burn in yesterday when i checked (very faint but could see the bottom bar) and now this morning i rechecked first thing and i dont see it anymore...so again, might be a retention thing over a burn in thing. but still this panel is garbage.

I experienced the same thing. Last night using the grey screen image from Android Central, I noticed the burn in and then this morning using the black and red screen images from Android Central, there was no burn in. However, when I use the grey one again, the "image burn" is still there. Not sure why it comes up on some color screens and not others, and I dont know why Android Central switched the test image. I guess we wait on Google.
Verizon Agent store employee here: Just wanted to give some feedback about burn in. I set up the demo units at my store four days ago on Friday. Both the Pixel 2 XL and the Pixel 2 have slight burn in at the navigation bar already. The buttons can't be seen, but there is a horizontal line across where the navbar would start.
Granted, these phones run 12 hours a day with the screen on and are always charging, but they are on 50% brightness and operate with night mode turned on (lowest intensity) to lessen the speed burn-in takes hold. No OLED panels survive demo modes on any manufacturer! Keep this in mind when going to a retail location to check out phones.
I hope that those experiencing burn-in with normal use are a legitimate few. I pre-ordered a Pixel 2 XL despite having a distaste for LG's build quality with phones. I've come around in the last couple years because of their improvements. Don't let me down, LG!

IMHO the nav bar and status bar are the worst offenders. Using expanded desktop helps by keeping the icons off the screen except when you need them.

No no no. A lot of people are looking at this issue in an inverted way. Literally everything except the navigation bar and notification bar is burnt. With OLED black=off.
When looking at the grey image, the navigation bar stands out because it's not burnt. The buttons on the nav bar are burnt, and if you check, they will match the top 95% of the screen.

Good point. One that's perfectly obvious now that you mention it. The good side to that is that making the navbar dynamic should alleviate that issue. I've always preferred a dynamic navbar, and like you said, a dynamic navbar would cause the navbar to burn equally with the rest of the screen, thereby making the whole issue null and void. Burn navbar burn!

While that is correct, the navbar still is the problem. People wouldn't be complaining if the screen was degrading at a uniform rate.
I had the galaxy nexus. Man, that phone had some burn in... Same with the Samsung s3. My nexus 6 has burn in. For a long time I was trying to run inverse mode with just the navbar active to try to wear the pixels at a more uniform rate. That seemed to help though I stopped doing it long ago. That being said, my wife's note 8 isn't seeing any burn in after a month. Now, I am sure it will come eventually, but a week seems really quick.
I had a 6P for 2 years (on eBay sale now if interested) and saw no burn in. My Pixel 2XL is a few days old, and I don't see any burn in either. I keep my phone at 50% brightness, because anything above sgives me eye strain. Maybe that is a contributing factor to those getting burn in.

Beyond brightness, doing anything special? Immersive mode? I think the culprit on my pixel is Waze. Hours on end. I don't think everyday use like Facebook YouTube etc will impact my device as much.
I guess my eyesight must really blow because I don't see any burn-in/discoloration on the 2 XL that I've had for 5 days or on the Nexus 6 that I've had for over 2 years. No sense changing my prescription now.
I don't really notice burn-in but image retention. When I bring up the full-screen grey image i still see the navbar but it slowly goes away. Just to be safe for now, I downloaded navbar app from the play store. I changed my navbar to be white in mostly white apps like chrome or facebook. Makes it harder to see the nav buttons that are also white/shadow, but I know where they are.

Do you think that's at least equal to immersive mode? It's definitely a lot more convenient
All the articles I've read and YouTube videos I have watched only address the burn in, blue tint shift and dull colors of the screen. But there's one more screen issue that everyone is forgetting. There is a lagging black pixel effect when the screen is very dim. With adaptive brightness on, turn your brightness all the way down and go in a completely dark room at night (usually happens to me when I'm using my phone before bed). Then go to instagram or facebook and find a picture with some black portions in it (try multiple pictures). Now slowly and slightly scroll up and down repeatedly. You'll start to notice the black pixels "lagging" behind the other colors and it looks as if they are moving slower than you scrolling the screen. Very odd, I've never seen it happen before on a display. Anyone else able to replicate this? I discovered it from Beau Hamilton from Phonedog on twitter.

I know what you're talking about, I can replicate this "problem." doesn't really concern me much at all. Never seen any other device do this but if you don't look for it, you won't notice it basically.

Lol, i love how people defend Google's screw up. If it was Apple or Samsung, oh, everyone be hating. You guys most grow money or something. This is completely unacceptable for a $1,000 phone. Pixel 2/XL are defective.
Please do an RMA or return this device. It is a defect.

well at least it's nice to know that someone else can replicate it too. I think it's just a characteristic of the display panel and unfortunately I always use mine in a situation that this issue becomes noticeable. Pretty sure an RMA won't do anything either as they all probably do this.

He wasn't even defending Google. All he said was it doesn't bother him. Why don't you just stay out of the pixel 2 xl forums if you hate the phone so much?
I definitely can replicate this easily, I am able to deal with all the other screen issues but the black smear is what bothers me the most
more from displaygate: SMEAR
YMMV
I got the phone Friday, noticed this last night. This is my first OLED panel, so I was really hoping that wasn't normal. I have to say I haven't really noticed the other screen issues but this issue is really bad.

Reading about it I've never seen this issue. I've replicated it on my new pixel XL 2... Then the same on Nexus 6P, my friends Galaxy S7 and my wife's ZTE Axon 7. All OLED screens with high resolution.
I think because it's Google's baby everyone is just looking too hard to find flaws.

Exactly and who turns off the display on his phone all the way down, then goes into a dark room to find a dark pixel? I mean in what circumstances would you do that in daily usage?
That's just amoled pure black. That's what happens on all of them.

He was defending it indirectly. There is a hardware defect and that needs to be told. Lol, why should I stay out of a pixel 2 xl forum? I hate the phone? Buddy, you need to stop getting offended. Don't put words in my mouth when I didn't say anything like that.
I am simply stating a reality that others are trying to cover it up. Most of us, work hard to earn money. When you are paying $1K USD, then these defects should not happen. Don't say, don't look for problems. I'm not sure about you or that other person, but money doesn't grow. There is no hate.
You just don't like to know or admit to the reality/facts. Stop justifying. Google screwed up and they need to fix it. By ignoring and covering it up, only gives them the reason to ignore these defects and screw customers over.

My s7e, s8+, note 8 does not exhibit this black smear problem, yes it's a issue with oled panels but Samsung has been able to technologically overcome black smear and you don't notice it on Samsung's. So I wouldn't say it's a defective problem with pixels display but just that they arent up to par with samsung displays
Lol you're trying too hard
GTFO if you have no interest in the phone
This also happens on my Galaxy s8+. It's normal for all OLED panels including AMOLED.

hmm maybe I can't notice it but I also tried it on my Nexus 6P and I didn't see the smear happening. Only happens on my Pixel 2 XL.

Well, as I explained previously, when I use my phone laying in my bed before I go to sleep the lights are off in my room so I turn the brightness down and that's when I notice it. Pretty sure it's a common thing to do.

Yeah no its not a defect. This is how all OLED/AMOLED screens are. Stock, this screen gets darker than most and you notice it more. If you turn the min brightness down on any amoled screen using root its the same thing. It has to do with refresh rate dropping with lower power to the display. Again not a defect.

Not my experience, I have not seen it to this effect on any modern OLED and definitely not on 6P which I can easily test.
Last night I tried to read Reddit in bed (pitch black) and the issue was blatantly obvious. I have done the same probably hundreds of times with my 6P and never saw anything similar.

i cant comment of the nexus 6P but thinking about it isent the 6p a lcd not oled..... ? i can assure you the samsung s8 and the s7 also do this , i tested on my partners phone(s) once i noticed this effect on my pixel 2 xl. Turning the brightness up does nothing its still the same , and you dont have to turn the brigtness down to notice it.
