Okay, this is the strangest problem ever.
I m not sure if the phone goes over ''Sleep of Death'', or a glitch in the proximity sensor that turns the screen off.
When I conect the earphone, then it works great, but if not I can't do anything - close the phone , light the screen to dial something
I find it hard to be any of those because the screen sleeps even if I call and don't get my face close to the phone .
I have read many people experiencing similar problems but noone really having an answer.
Thank you

Hi;
While on a call, the screen will close. While still talking I press the side button to open the screen and the call will disconnect.
How do I correct this?
Thank you.
Same question. Its just stupid, how on earth I`m supposed to wake up screen without disconnecting a call ?!
Go to: settings>Accessibility>un-check-power button ends call
what's funny is i'm pretty sure that this setting is not selected out of the box, so you guys must have went and enabled it yourselves!

I don't know about yours but my SGN seems to have proximity sensor near the speaker and it seems to turn screen on as soon as I take it away from my ear auto-magically It may "lag", but it's fair enough for me...
Mine did the same thing today. I confirmed the accessibility link cited above was not checked. Proximity sensor is irrelevant, I was on a two hour conference call and speaker using speaker phone mode. Screen times out and shuts down on its own, which also shuts off the prox sensor.
Hello!
After I got my phone back from repair with new screen and motherboard i have got this annoying problem when taking calls, screen goes on and off, sometimes stays off when I try rotate it during a call.
Any ideas?
The phone using proximity sensor to detect your face, for the case if anything get cover/near the sensor (under 9cm; located left to the htc logo) during call the screen will turn off and disable touch screen too. This meant to avoid user accidentaly ends the call. Please note that there is also a 0.5-1.0 second delayed for the screen to turn on/off based on the sensor.
If you phone's problem is on the case, then it is nothing to wrong.. else please elaborate briefly on the issue..
Note 2 Verizon Rooted. Two weeks ago my phone started this. When ever I make a phone call, the screen cuts off. The problem is it wont come back on until the call has ended. Now if i reach someone this isnt a huge issue, but if I have to deal with an automated system, or get someones voice mail i Have to do a battery pull. Does anyone know what is going on? Please help.
Try to clear data of phone app.

Same Problem
I had the same problem, I found it was the cover I had on my phone that prevented the phone to go back on during a call.
This is a problem related to the proximity sensor. It's something very hard to clean so I just disabled turn off screen during calls option. Just go to your dialer press menu button then click call settings you should see turn of screen calls option, disable it.
Your cheek probably touch to screen and press random buttons when you're on the phone so remember to turn off your screen by on off button so you dont touch buttons with your cheek.
Hope that solves your problem
edit: I found that sometimes blowing through the speaker makes proximity sensor work correctly for a while. It's not a practical solution though.

Thanks for the information everyone! I busted the screen a few months ago and assume that's whats causing it. I just didn't think that was it because it hadn't been a problem until well after I busted it. Ill disable this option and that will take care of it for my needs.
Hello,
my GF's phone keeps switching to airplane mode when she answers calls. She can talk for 5-25 second and then the phone switches to airplane mode. I allready checked if the sensor that turns the screen of isnt working, but that is not the problem. If i hide the sensor with my finger the screen turns off.
And she cant listen to voice messages through the speaker, in the moment she takes the phone to her ear, the messages stop.
Looks for me like an error with the sensor but as i said, when i hide it with my finger the screen turns off.
Its on Android 4.2.2 and not rooted or has any custom rom.
Maybee anybody had the same issue or an idea what could be the reason.
I thought about installing Viper one but i am not sure if this could fix a sensor error or if it would be the best solution to send it to htc.
Hello,
Is anyone having trouble trying to change volume while in a call ?
It's not properly registering the up or down clicks on the rocker. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
It is only happening when the phone is close to your face and the screen is off. When I take the phone away from my face, it works flawlessly.
In all other situation outside of a call, it works as intended
I've got one answer from the support telling me that this is a normal behaviour due to the proximity sensor . An other answer from them ask me to reset the phone... (the phone is 2 days old..)
