Thinking about switching to T-mobile in the SW Suburbs of Chicago; I'm on wifi most of the time, so data speed isnt important to me, but, we MUST have good phone call quality in our house.
Is this an issue for anyone in chicago land, or, if we get a phone that is "wifi capable", and we have a fast, strong, wifi network in our house, does this become a non issue?
We had ATT, which was no problem in the house, and recently switched to Sprint, with the hopes of a stong "Spark Network" here; well, one of our phones in Spark compatible, and works fine, but the other 2 phones are HTC One's, not spark "compatible", and have poor phone call quality and reception in the house. We are waiting on an AirRave front Sprint, but, if that doesnt work, we're ready to go to T-Mobile..
Sorry for this weird question here, but, I trust my buds on XDA to give a real report on stuff like this, NOT the people from T-Mobile
Thanks!:good:
Sorry not from Chicago.
But I can say if you get a phone that can do wifi-calling (most new T-mobile branded phone should do this), then you wouldn't have any problem at all with phone calls.
thanks, thats what I have heard now from all tmobile users..hard to believe every carrier doesnt offer wifi calling.
It would eliminate all complaints about bad call quality.
Yes, my phone had LTE connection while on my visit to Chicago(downtown) in Nov 2013.
Signal strength may change just within few blocks radius. Personally in Long Island I can go from full signal with great lte connection to one bar and crawling lte within quarter of the mile. This is reason why I limit my Note to use 4g network or it is constantly looking for lte and kills battery very fast.

You'll have 4G or LTE pretty much anywhere in Chicagoland

You should check out the coverage maps add complied by Open Signal and Sensorly.
It shows user collected data in your area showing actual user device reception and speed.
FYI. Don't get me wrong, I love wifi calling. It is *great* in a lot of situations. I've had people ask how I am getting texts and getting calls in the bowels of large buildings when they have no service. Love it.
One limitation of the service is that if you leave the wifi coverage area you will obviously lose connection to the wifi calling. Not a big deal if you pop back onto the cell network. UNLESS you are on a phone call. Wifi calling can not hand off your active call to a cell tower (yet). You will always drop the call. Not usually the end of the world, but something to understand going into the deal. For this reason I have my wifi calling preferences set to cell network preferred. That way as long as I have signal I can talk via tower, if signal drops it pops into wifi calling.

I assume the Galaxy Nexus works with this.
I had the Sprint Airave and it was great. But the AT&T Microcell + iPhone was horrible.

Call verizon, I got mine for 125.00 and it works great.
Does it do LTE?
Brian
circlebar when did you buy it, and what model # did Verizon give you?
Brian it doesn't do LTE.
The most you will get out of it is EVDO.

The extender only does voice no data at all its a pain in the ass because it will not use your wifi to send mms messages. So if you have no reception at home you still cant send mms messages. P.S it works off your existing wifi.......
This looks like it needs an Internet connection AND reception? Most people don't have access to both. Honestly the home phone setup seems like a better deal for most people.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
It needs internet connection AND GPS reception for the initial setup. If one of the two goes out afterwards it will still work.
I have both.
The one at the Verizon link is the newest - 3G - version. It does both voice and data. It requires an internet connection, and a GPS signal. It does not need cell reception - that's the whole point. Cell signal in my home is terrible. This device utilizes your internet connection, and broadcasts its own signal that your phone then picks up and uses. Works quite well.
It is *not* 4G.
The older one is 1x - voice only. It also works, but I'd have to say that I think I get better performance with the new one.
You can Verizon and sometimes get them to pay for some or all of it, if your home signal is poor, and you therefore may have to get a different provider, etc.
If someone is interested in the original one, just pay for the shipping, and I'll send it to you. It's just gathering dust for me. Tried to Craigslist it, but got no response.
Email me at dlcphoto at gmail dot com if you're interested.
If you need a signal booster for your car, the company Wilson makes an assortment of them. I don't have one myself, but a friend does. When i've been in the car with her I have noticed an improvement in signal strength on my phone. The one she has though is some fancy unit she got for like $600 so I am not sure if the 'inexpensive' ones do much.
I've heard from a few people (friends) that if you call enough to complain, then they will give it to you for free.
I've also heard (magazine article) that if you tell Verizon that you are moving to an area with no service they will let you out of your contract (and they don't really follow up). So, it makes sense that they would rather spend the less than $250 it actually costs them for the unit, to keep your business for 2 years.
I say try that route - call them up, complain, etc. Tell them that they are not providing coverage - maybe they can send out a tech to see this problem on your phone in person(?) and then if all else fails, pay for one.
I got one of the 1x extenders from Verizon a while back. I complained a bit, and got it for $50. It works quite well in the house, and even in the driveway. For under $100 I'd say it's worth it. No way I'd pay $250 for it though.

Interesting that you mention this. Engadget has a post this morning about a 4G Signal Booster, for Verizon LTE, to be available sometime next year:
Wilson 4G Signal Booster
Apparently only $150. Looks interesting!
I had one of those network extenders, but it was for Sprint. I had gotten it for free just by asking for it because I was in a low coverage area. I switched to Verizon and now I don't need it
Ebay VZW extender
No need for a 3G extender unless you have no wifi. The older model on ebay works great for my phone calls. I can send sms/mms easily. And the wifi takes care of the rest.
I tried like crazy to get VZW to subsidize a new 3G extender, but they didn't budge, even after opening a tech case for poor signal. I live in a known "black hole" of reception so I thought they might be a bit more willing. The rep mentioned they get a lot of requests for free/subsidized extenders, so I think this has been over used. Happy with the old tech model for $60 brand new.
At home I get good 3G signal but LTE is a little weak.
To solve the problem I got myself a second router and made it a repeater bridge. Now I get solid 3G signal for calls and strong wi-fi signal through the entire home for data.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/03/wilson-electronics-introduces-the-worlds-first-lte-signal-boost/
The device, with an MSRP of $149.95, boosts all LTE, 3G and 2G cellular signals on 700 MHz, 800 MHz and 1900 MHz frequency bands. Designed for use in a vehicle, the Sleek 4G-V can also be used indoors with the purchase of an optional accessory kit...

In areas not served by Verizon Wireless LTE, the Sleek 4G-V will amplify any existing signal on 800 MHz and 1900 MHz bands. This allows the user to enjoy a strong, reliable cellular signal even when no 4G service is available.
The Sleek 4G-V delivers more than 20 times the power of a typical cell phone, but weighs only three ounces (85 grams) and measures just 2.5 by 4.5 by 2.5 inches (6.4 x 11.4 6.4 cm). Simple, do-it-yourself installation is done in a matter of minutes.

Verizon's 3G is good enough for my phone no matter where I'm at. I can stream anything I want. I think I've only turned on the wifi on my phone like one time, just because I downloaded an app that required wifi to fully download the app.
Going into a 4G area is just icing on the cake.
I really want to keep this phone, so please help me out, lol. I am in an extended network area for Verizon. My Gnex drops 3g and it will not come back for hours or longer. The phone will show a signal, full bars -75 signal strength, but the 3g icon will not be there, so no email, speed test, web browsing.
I tried two gnex's and sim cards. The Rezound I have works perfect right next to the gnex, so I don't know what to think? They are both on the same prl. I called verizon, but they are no help, pull battery, factory reset, ect. I tried all the radio's I can find, tried three roms.
I am at a loss, if I can't figure it out I will be forced to live with a rezound for the next two years, help please, thanks.........Brian

Shot in the dark here, but did you enable Data Roaming in the Mobile Network settings? When I was in Indiana a while back (when I still used my Nexus One on T-Mo) it wouldn't use data until I turned on roaming. Which is kinda silly, because that setting is meant for international roaming, but then again America isn't a typical wireless market.
Yes, that and automatic, tried lte/cdma, and cdma only. Tried all the normal stuff, pulling the sim card, ect. It is weird these phones do this, but the rezound just plain works.........
Nothing? Amazon just sent me a brand new Rezound to try, but I really like the gnex, but I need good data. Thanks..........Brian

Automatic is the right setting.
Radio could matter.
LTE/CDMA shouldn't matter.
ROM doesn't matter (at all).
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and go to Phone information and post a screenshot (scroll down just enough to move the IMEI/MEID and your Phone number out of view to save yourself from some post-editing).

I have the exact same issue. I live in a 3G Extended Network area. Data on Droid X worked fine. Got Galaxy Nexus knowing I wouldn't have 4G (3G has been perfect for me). I was out of town when I got it in a Verizon Network. Drove home and...well...no data on Galaxy Nexus. Told Verizon tier 2, and they said it was a "known issue". I've flashed all radios and combinations and nothing has worked yet.
There isn't much you can do, but I bet if you petition/complain enough VZW could actually expand the network. Get others in your area to call in about it. You can't really blame the phone, even if the Rezound is working correctly.
Glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue. I'm also in an extended coverage only area and tend to have 6 or 7 hour stretches of no data. I've gotten two nexuses and neither has been better than the other. Previously had a Droid that never lost signal. As far as getting them to expand their network here, it won't happen because of some stupid municipal law in the county I live in that only allows a certain number of wireless providers and vzw was late to the party. In my case, I'm holding out hope that my situation will improve when the provider here (Cellcom) lunches their 4g network in q2 since they are one of the rural roaming partners for verizon.
I have been with T-Mobile in Bloomington, IL for over 7 years now. The only thing I have ever complained about is data speeds in my area. So, when I read the following press release from T-Mobile last year, I was super excited.
http://newsroom.t-mobile.com/articles/new-4g-markets-nov2011
In that release dated Nov 16th 2011, it says
"T-Mobile 4G markets where HPSA+ 42 service is launching today:
Bend, Medford and Corvallis, Ore.; Benton Harbor, Mich.; Bloomington, Champaign–Urbana and Springfield, Ill.; Columbus, Ga.; Hagerstown, Md.; Montgomery, Ala; Yuba City, Calif."
So, I have not seen a difference in speeds at all over the past year with the following phones, HTC Senseation, Galaxy Nexus GSM, HTC One S and the Galaxy S3.
I have never gotten anything above 3Mb anywhere in town. Now, when I call T-Mobile to inquire about my slow speeds, they tell me only 3G is offered in my area and that the speeds I am getting are consistent with there network. FYI my status tells me that my Mobile Network Type is HSPAP:15
Attached is a screenshot of my typical speeds. Am I getting ripped off on data speeds?

Could it be that half of Bloomington is covered but the other half isn't, and you're in the bad half?
I would call customer service and politely ask to speak to tech support. Let them know your issue and ask to speak to a supervisor. When the supervisor gets on the phone tell them you want this to keep getting escalated until you get an answer.
I had a similar problem and it took two weeks to finally get anywhere.

I have though the same thing, but Bloomington is a pretty small city and I have driven all over town doing speed test in the past. Plus, when I have called them, I am told that there is no 4G anywhere close to me. Does that make sense if my network type is HSPAP:15?
Your speeds are up to par with what I get. Hell they're better. I would say everything is normal. T-Mobile has very weird and spotty service. I'm hoping the reframing of the towers will help.

Honestly you shouldnt be seeing much of a difference from people downloading at 10 Mbps... you're still downloading at 100 KB/s with 1 Mbps....

Your problem was completely different. You had towers down in your area.
OP, you need to realize that every single phone you listed aside from the One S and S3 are NOT capable of HSPA+42. So that is your first problem. The second problem is that wherever you are in Bloomington, an HSPA+42 tower does not reach you. Coverage isn't always the best. I'm a five minute walk from Wrigley Field and a five minute drive to downtown Chicago and I only get 7-8mbps. I drive fifteen minutes west to where I went to high school, and I get speeds of 20-22mbps.
Third, HSPA+42 speeds are THEORETICAL. You can THEORETICALLY have speeds that fast. You aren't guaranteed to.
Also, HSPA+42 is still 3G.
Sent from my SGH-T999
It looks like you encountered massive traffic or the backhaul is not upgraded.
I had the same problem. I kept upgrading phones, buying them full price so I didn't have to renew my contract but I just kept switching my old SIM card into my new phones. When I switched to the Sensation I called T-Mobile about my slow speeds and they told me I had to upgrade to a "4G SIM card" and that worked. I would say that could be your problem but being that you now have the S3 and it has the micro SIM card then maybe they didn't upgrade your area yet.
That sucks dude...I'm out in Orlando, FL and I usually get about 10-15mbps almost anywhere...
At home I get +15mbps every time...
I attached a photo with the difference of my WiFi at home and my HSPA+42 at home. These were after a ROM change so I only have 5.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Do you notice the same speeds on other speed tests or super sluggish browsing?
It's possible to imagine that the nearest and even lowest pingable server is simple not responsive to your (up/down)link. I usually compare to freespeedtest.com and even grab files from local servers.
Also you server's routing table could be weird.
If not, I'm inclined to believe that it is an overhead problem.
Go to the phone dialer (on stock) and try doing
*#197328640#*
1:UMTS
1ebug Screen
1:Basic Information
And check the bottom item lines. You should see some connection information about your service. Can you list what you have?
Also, jic check the Band at the top and make sure it says 4. Possibly could be defaulting to 1900 experimental.
Just want to ask a few quick questions before I go poking around too much in the ##3282# settings. I got my MSL code and have been looking around in the settings windows. And a few of them made me wonder.
The first is the IOTHiddenSettings menu. It list all the various modes of the phone. Its currently set to "LTE+CDMA+EVDO mode". I'm assuming this is the best mode vs LTE Only Mode. That mode would probably keep me from having service since I dont live in an LTE area atm based on sprints latest coverage map. But what about the "hybrid mode" or the "global mode" options? Will those give me something faster than 3g? Maybe let me roam onto a local LTE network like AT&T's?

Next is the APNs list. I'm just curious if its really set for the best one?
My ultimate goal is to get this phone to stop having such a slow connection while away from wifi. I swear this thing feels like its on dial up at times. And I'm standing in a place that I know should be getting speeds a lot better than 21kb/s. Such as downtown Baltimore. Or the national mall in DC. Places where I've got full signal strength and would expect a network that could handle better speeds even with a lot of people.
GSM must be a different animal. Because with my AT&T iphone, I've seen it show 3g, 4g, and LTE. I tend to get 4g in most places. 3g happens when I'm going way out. Like Harper's Ferry, WV or somewhere similar. LTE happens everywhere in the city.
Why can't this note 2 get that kind of speeds on sprint? I don't remember their network being this bad in the past.

Depending a your location, sprint might be be working on the 4g LTE, so it might be causing slower data issues since they are working on the towers, the trick is, they work on those towers batch by batch and chances are there would be a better working cellsite in your neighborhood...u can ##SCRTN#, enter ur msl code and the phone will reprogram itself, while doing that, it will be looking for the nearest best signal, so u might lock on a better tower. As per the "Hybrid Mode" i believe its a network mode for 3g CDMA and the 1X EDVO...if you do not have 4g in area, i'll recommend sticking to cdma only, as for the APN, you are on the best one available in ur area right now...

Been thinking of leaving Verizon for T-mobile,how is the coverage.
customer service etc.
Verizons network is 99% lte even if it is slow lte since it was one of the first carriers to have it, days of pulling 60mbps are gone. TMO i prefer because it is less congested so you will pull faster speeds in lte zones and get lower ping. I had a bf who uses tmobiles lte as his home wifi and latency was no issue in mmos whereas in same spot with verizon where I pulled 60/20 with a htc thunderbolt two years ago.... i get 12/4.
Switching also gets you access to free international data & apps like spotify dont use your plan and all plans are unlimited data its just 4G speed caps... 0 overages ever. Magenta plans on converting entire 3g market into lte by end of year I heard so its a solid move. I would do it honestly I have both right now due to parents making me stay on it and tmobile has vastly improved on a monthly basis almost here. If you had asked this two years ago ide of said stay on big red but its not the case anymore.

Reason i asked was Facebook was magically eating data to the tune of 3 gb plus ate all my verizon data.
unless you travel check you coverage or just try tmobile for 7 days check out the program

If you have T-Mobile coverage where you live then go for it. Do you have any friends with T-Mobile? If so, ask them to come over and see how the network is. I left VZW for T-Mobile but where I live I have great coverage for both companies.

service and customer service is top ship. I've been with TMO for 12 yrs or so. Depends on the area you are in .. With that you will have to do the research. Customer svc is great with them. I switched to VZ because i moved to an area where tmo had 1 tower and i could not get a signal at work. I've since switched back and found that the lack in coverage, is great compared to the price difference. I'm paying for 5 phones with TMO what i was paying with VZ. At home i'm on wifi. out in town i get 4g. I live just outside of a 4g area probably 2 miles, so when i'm out and about I get great coverage, when i'm at home, i'm on wifi. My TMO 4g speeds are way better then my wifi at the moment with WOW but i'll wait for them to finish their upgrades as TMO just started expanding the network to rural areas outside of urban cities. For me is was price over performance and VZ completely screwed me over with the launch of the G2 that had flaws, they knew about it, and would not let me trade the phone in. Sorry, but telling me wait a month for the update to use my phone was not acceptable. I'm now willingly using my wifi instead of 4g.
