I have 3 lines, all with unlimited Internet but tmobil only allows 2.5gb of tethering. Currently using slimbean stable on my s4, how do I get unlimited tethering? I've tried Wify Tether app but it doesn't work.
I went into the apn settings and I see several options.
Any advice would be appreciative. Spent an hour trying to figure this out :/

Have they actually capped you? I used over 30gb last month... with native tether.... Otherwise use the search function and report back.... I'd like to know the answer also but too lazy to look
I don't think any AOSP Roms have the data cap hack. Most of the TW Roms have the hack baked into the system. You may wanna try TW before going over your data limit. I have unlimited and use tethering all the time also I use the Wi-Fi tether app instead of the native hot spot.

There is no such thing as a "data cap hack" there was one years ago, but it doesn't work anymore. All data traffic is now monitored via T-Mobile servers.

So I am stuck @ 2.5gb? I called TMobil to increase my tethering, they said NO.
I see people all over the forums saying they have unlimited tethering by hiding their data usage and they always emphasize not to abuse it. I am giving tmobil a good large sum of money, 200 bucks.
So nobody knows of a unlimited tethering method?
Been looking around, according to some, Cyanogen should already come with the necessary coding to allow unlimited tethering but than again I am using SlimBean which I do not know if that has anything to do with it.

Again, unlimited tethering is impossible through "coding." It is handled by T-Mobile servers. A little Googling would tell you what you have to do however, I always thought if you paid 15 bucks extra each month they would include unlimited tethering?

Yeah I have been google and xda searching, I'm obviously not looking correctly or do not know what exactly to look for. Been trying to use the app Wifi Tether for Root Users but it does not show my device, only the atnt model, it's useless so far unless if myabe I go to an older version maybe?
I dont mind paying 15 bucks but they said they do NOT offer unlimited tethering only web access.
Is something keeping you from posting the information I am looking for or your trying to see if I can figure it out on my own by somewhat directing to a place I have already tried looking for but failed because I am a noob lol

OK, I am an admitted noob to this site, just joined today in fact, but that is only because I have been trolling these forums looking for a clear answer to this issue for weeks now. I also have TM and am capped. I use my mobile hot spot to do my homework for the online school I attend. and recently switched from the big V to TM because of the cost, and now I'm screwed. I have searched so many forums and term strings it is not funny. I have tried vpn, hotspot shield, private internet access, and a host of wifi tether apps, and have not found a working combo. I have even tried modifying strings using SQLite. Most app combinations will not activate hotspot, and those that do cause laptop browser to redirect to t-mobile sale page. I will beat them... I will. But I joined xda for a little help, if you anyone does not wish to give the easy answer, I absolutely understand, just please direct me to the forum that has solved this as I am not "yet" a dev, but I'm getting there.
my config:

I've found that when I search and search and can't find something, it's because it was so fundamental a feature that it is automatically assumed people know how to use it.
What evidence do you have that T-Mobile is blocking your tethering after 2.5gb? Others have asked but it doesn't seem like that question has been answered. I have CM11 and have tethered like a fiend using the ROM's built-in hotspot feature, which the stock T-Mobile Account app doesn't even pick up on. Additionally I've been told that after 2.5gb, they don't block you, just throttle your speed down.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
I use User Agent Switcher addon for firefox and choose Googlebot under Search Robots. I never get throttled using this method, although some site are wonky like netflix.
Well, apparently I did not try enough software combinations. I have finally got it working using Hotspot Shield free, paired with WiFi Tether Router. My GS4 is only about 3 weeks old, so this is likely the newest solution.

Yeah Im still confused as well and I have also done a lot of research on the topic over the past few months.
Running AOSP, can we just use the native tethering (works great for me but then again i believe im still within the 2.5 gb of allotted tethering) or do we need to use the user agent switcher method?
Well since you guys are on the right track
You have a couple options:
1. (Prolly the best) Purchase or use a free VPN client ON YOUR DEVICE to encrypt ALL your data, now T-Mobile can't detect what the data is, its just data.
2. Use a User Agent switcher to change your user agent so it looks like the data is coming from a mobile device instead of a computer.

Wanted to share this with anyone who isn't aware. We can tether our ET4G on 4G but it requires USB and a 3rd party app. I tested it tonight with the free version of EasyTether and it works like a charm. Not personally interested in spending $10 for the full app but to some it may be worth it.
I haven't tested Klink but it's only $4 and it may work as well as a cheaper alternative.

Sweet, checking that out now. I see the free version doesn't allow https. I'll have to download the app to see how much the full version costs because I don't see it listed in the market.
To use these tethering method doesn't required the phone to be rooted, right? Also, will I be charged if I try to use it and can sprint figure out that I am tethering for free? I don't want to get a bill for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. How safe it is to tether undetected and are lots of people doing it for free with no penalty? I would like to tether for free but am just too afraid of getting caught and charged for it.
To be honest with you I used to have AT&T and now I have sprint and i've never once got a txt or anything in the mail telling me to stop. On AT&T I was running Cyanogen Mod and on my ET4G i'm running Calkulin's which has NoCIQ. If you aren't familiar with NoCIQ it basically makes it so sprint can't tell how your phone is using the data.
I wouldn't trust tethering if you're running a stock rom, even if the dev of the software says it's safe.

I think you might want to quantify your statement regarding NoCIQ. I've yet to see any published report from any reliable source showing it being used for data measurement. All a carrier has to do is look for unusual spikes in data volume.

I've had an android on sprint for almost 2 years now, always rooted, always tethering, always stock rom. Ciq still on there. They have never told me anything. And I always use 3rd party apps for tethering. I honestly don't think they know/care. At the end of the day, it works for the most of us, and we don't really abuse it; thus, they really shouldn't have a problem with it. They're bull**** hot spot app from sprint is ridiculously slow anyway. There's a huge difference in speed... its almost like they want us to find our own way of tethering lol.
That's my rationale and I'm sticking to it.

Android's built-in tethering can't avoid detection, but some alternative methods can. Here is one that can avoid detection (USB tethering only though): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether
It won't show up on your phone's Play Store because AT&T blocked the app for all their devices, but you can sideload it.

Mmm tethering. I've always found it ridiculous that carriers charge so much for it, when it is a capability inherent to the phone you paid for.

Yes you can bypass the carriers restrictions or use a ROM that doesn't have restrictions but sure enough the carriers have a way of finding out. So be cautious. AT&T, for example may send you a warning but if they don't or you don't heed the warning they can slap on the tether plan or worse yet cancel your service. So again be careful.

The reason why the phone companies behave this way is because all the profits made by them come from the data plans. Not a single one makes money on voice plans so they get a little jealous when one does something that takes money out of their pocket. We as consumers do have a say, its called going to a competitor if one doesn't like a provider, control how much you spend till your contract is up then leave.

I switched my plan from 5gig to unlimited... they told me u can't hotspot/teather with this plan... they switched my plan... and I then said now connect to my devices WiFi ...
4 employes jaws droped after they connected...(now half of the tmo store wants me to root and hook up there phone like mine!!!(Rom*g.wallet.overclock) Hahaha!!! last night I tested teathering out by 8 gigs of download ... no throttle... all used by WiFi hotspot...
It's AWESOME.. I don't plan on abusing it.. I just like TO NOT BE THROTTLED...
Thank u tmo... for true unlimited!!!
And with the HI2 modem I'm getting 19Mb down

word, good lookin out, been on tmo website the past few days bout to pull the trigger but the 2 year reup kept me from it, the positive input makes me think i can possibly kill the home wifi thru clear aka sprint and their lil 6mb up more like 2 at best 4g wifi hotspot unit. the only thing ill give the clear hotspot cred on, ive used that thing to some insane #s on classes up at the local juco and had other kids on to max out all 8 hookups and never been throttled...not that theres much wiggle room for them to throttle, and im talkin some sick monthly usage GBs lol not that i care about the students but ive been known to cloud transfer my entire harddrive from one of my laptops in KC to my vegas locale, and lets just say the ol tmo 10gb/mo plan has been throttled on me b4 with oh 3 and a half weeks b4 my billing cycle was up lol thanks for the heads up
I wouldn't expose this right in front of them. It's like bragging you have root to a warranty rep

I read a huge thread explaining all the fine print about tethering. But even worse, Verizon and att MUST allow free tethering as said by the FCC. I'm honestly thinking about researching everything getting all the details sorted out and bringing it forth to the FCC. Cause apparently the way they tell if you're tethering is by packet sniffing. And from what I understand, that's illegal period. Even if it's included in the TOS. That's my private data they are sniffing.

Which part are you asking is true? The data packet sniffing? Yes that's true. It's the only way they can see what data is being passed through. It's an invasion of privacy if you ask me

Yea, the packet sniffing. I agree with you... complete invasion. Should be illegal if its not. No companies or the public seem to give a crap about privacy anymore.

From what I thought, it is. But apparently T-Mobile has it included in the "fine print" that when you agreed to terms of service you give them permission.. still don't see how that's "legal".

That should not matter. How can people change something like this? Who would you get ahold of?

Well, one still can resource to connect via VPN..
I am thinking to just upgrade from SGSII to the newest II; i like the fact the screen is more crispy; at least what i saw in store. With my SII in 11 month I never had problems with thetering but I only have used it to connect to internet my laptop at work to read email or to the company web portal for ticketing closing and management, only few minutes at the time..
I really don't know if the jump is worthy...I got old Juggernaut v3.7 on my SGSII...had it for 11 months now..if i upgrade, will pay full price for the III.
I have been downloading ROMS all evening. At 3 gigs so far and no cut off yet. rooted stock
So i have a T-Mobile GS3 and its rooted running Deviants Development Frosty Jelly bean. :good::good::good:
and i am using a moded app fo WifiTether. its called WifiTether_TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012.apk (Credit to the Techfanatic9 guy he showed me how to do it) the app runs great and actually i have no problem when i tether to my mac on my windows i had to download a firefox and chrome mod called used agent and change the setting to googlebot. then my internet worked perfectly. since i have T-Mobile i have unlimited 4g and that is great, because im am saving lots of money now that i have tethered rooting.
however when i try to plug it into my ps3 it does not work. at the beginning it did and then it stopped working. do you guys have any idea as to why and what can i do to fix this problem?
Some of these custom roms the devs make on here don't have tethering working i noticed too and the rom i would recomend for you which is guaranteed to have tethering working is the Xtremeperia rom for the galaxy s3 by Jovy in the android development section. I can totally understand your frustration where your other devices try to connect to your phone but they don't get anywhere. I have all you can eat true 4g from tmobile so i enjoy tethering.

Thats why. Its impossible to change a user agent on the PS3. You are completely out of luck with that plan. T-Mobile is blocking the PS3 UA.
Yea all you can eat 4g is hands down awesome. Nothing compares to it. Its even faster than the att uverse I had. Could you give me the link for that rom. I looked for it and could not find it. I want to test it out.

Just as I figured, do you think the might be a way to trick tmobile thru the phone instead of the ps3.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Not only ps3, my it blocks my vita too.
To the person above me, probably. But a ps3 has to build something to change the agent.

Only way I could get it to work is by purchasing a VPN client.
Amazon EC2 micro open vpn free
Amazon ec2 micro open vpn > open vpn android > trevE mod wifi tether > laptop (no UA change)
i run CM10 stable and i reflashed an old linksys router with dd wrt software and turned it into a repeater then i connect it to my phone and tether. i run my ps3, tf700, desktop and other phones off of it.. havent had an issue with cm10 and tethering.

You must be blocking the ability to track your user agent because it's impossible to constantly tether without getting blocked eventually

I've done the same.. I've tried VPN as well but no luck.. I've done it all. To setting APN app to system app, then deleting APN's and restoring from the given "T-Mobile APN" xml file thats here on XDA.. but still no luck.. I'm running T-Mo's Note 2.. Of course i can get the laptop/desktop's to work because of the UA but other than that no luck on my end...
Maybe a different VPN app? I'm thinking if theres a way to change the phone somehow, instead of messing with the PSN or PS3's UA... hmm..
I haven't confirmed the USB tether to computer with router fix yet.. Seeing as my phone won't turn on USB tethering for the life of it.. :/ I can flash DD-WRT to my router if it helps.. any suggestions?
EDIT: Also, I'm on the unlimited 4G plan as well. I've also changed ROM's and no luck.. Running Jedi X8, but going to try other ones that may work better with Tethering.. (I've also tried MIUI as well.. the most current one didn't have any luck either)
