Did you use another program such as FOXfi? Or did you just use what was built in? If you use a third party program I don't think at&t can detect?? Maybe? I have been using a third party program and they haven't said boo. But then again I haven't really been accessive with my data. Your thoughts on this? Thanks.

Android's built-in tethering can't avoid detection, but some alternative methods can. Here is one that can avoid detection (USB tethering only though): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether
It won't show up on your phone's Play Store because AT&T blocked the app for all their devices, but you can sideload it.

I always kind of suspected this. Guess I'll stick with my current habit of popping my SIM card into my HP Veer if I need to tether. At least WebOS is still good for something! :silly:

Mmm tethering. I've always found it ridiculous that carriers charge so much for it, when it is a capability inherent to the phone you paid for.

Yes you can bypass the carriers restrictions or use a ROM that doesn't have restrictions but sure enough the carriers have a way of finding out. So be cautious. AT&T, for example may send you a warning but if they don't or you don't heed the warning they can slap on the tether plan or worse yet cancel your service. So again be careful.

Voice calling is a capability inherent to the phone but we all gladly pay anywhere from $20 to $200 every month for it.

You have a point there. My gripe though is that if I am paying for unlimited data, should they be able to tell me how I use that data?

The reason why the phone companies behave this way is because all the profits made by them come from the data plans. Not a single one makes money on voice plans so they get a little jealous when one does something that takes money out of their pocket. We as consumers do have a say, its called going to a competitor if one doesn't like a provider, control how much you spend till your contract is up then leave.

Wanted to share this with anyone who isn't aware. We can tether our ET4G on 4G but it requires USB and a 3rd party app. I tested it tonight with the free version of EasyTether and it works like a charm. Not personally interested in spending $10 for the full app but to some it may be worth it.
I haven't tested Klink but it's only $4 and it may work as well as a cheaper alternative.

Sweet, checking that out now. I see the free version doesn't allow https. I'll have to download the app to see how much the full version costs because I don't see it listed in the market.
To use these tethering method doesn't required the phone to be rooted, right? Also, will I be charged if I try to use it and can sprint figure out that I am tethering for free? I don't want to get a bill for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. How safe it is to tether undetected and are lots of people doing it for free with no penalty? I would like to tether for free but am just too afraid of getting caught and charged for it.
To be honest with you I used to have AT&T and now I have sprint and i've never once got a txt or anything in the mail telling me to stop. On AT&T I was running Cyanogen Mod and on my ET4G i'm running Calkulin's which has NoCIQ. If you aren't familiar with NoCIQ it basically makes it so sprint can't tell how your phone is using the data.
I wouldn't trust tethering if you're running a stock rom, even if the dev of the software says it's safe.

I think you might want to quantify your statement regarding NoCIQ. I've yet to see any published report from any reliable source showing it being used for data measurement. All a carrier has to do is look for unusual spikes in data volume.

I've had an android on sprint for almost 2 years now, always rooted, always tethering, always stock rom. Ciq still on there. They have never told me anything. And I always use 3rd party apps for tethering. I honestly don't think they know/care. At the end of the day, it works for the most of us, and we don't really abuse it; thus, they really shouldn't have a problem with it. They're bull**** hot spot app from sprint is ridiculously slow anyway. There's a huge difference in speed... its almost like they want us to find our own way of tethering lol.
That's my rationale and I'm sticking to it.

I don't use my data that much, maybe about 2GB a month, but I still hate the fact that every company want to charge for tier pricing. But the idea of the company able to charge for the service it doesn't do anything is insane. Sure if you want to let the company do so then go ahead, but then if you can do it yourself, then it become self service and you shouldn't have to pay. This is like they should be able to charge extra a month if you let you friend borrow your phone to make a call or to use 3rd party headset. Majority of people don't actually share the bandwidth with other people but rather to use the data of themself on another device.

I don't think any AOSP Roms have the data cap hack. Most of the TW Roms have the hack baked into the system. You may wanna try TW before going over your data limit. I have unlimited and use tethering all the time also I use the Wi-Fi tether app instead of the native hot spot.

So I am stuck @ 2.5gb? I called TMobil to increase my tethering, they said NO.
I see people all over the forums saying they have unlimited tethering by hiding their data usage and they always emphasize not to abuse it. I am giving tmobil a good large sum of money, 200 bucks.
So nobody knows of a unlimited tethering method?
Been looking around, according to some, Cyanogen should already come with the necessary coding to allow unlimited tethering but than again I am using SlimBean which I do not know if that has anything to do with it.

Again, unlimited tethering is impossible through "coding." It is handled by T-Mobile servers. A little Googling would tell you what you have to do however, I always thought if you paid 15 bucks extra each month they would include unlimited tethering?

OK, I am an admitted noob to this site, just joined today in fact, but that is only because I have been trolling these forums looking for a clear answer to this issue for weeks now. I also have TM and am capped. I use my mobile hot spot to do my homework for the online school I attend. and recently switched from the big V to TM because of the cost, and now I'm screwed. I have searched so many forums and term strings it is not funny. I have tried vpn, hotspot shield, private internet access, and a host of wifi tether apps, and have not found a working combo. I have even tried modifying strings using SQLite. Most app combinations will not activate hotspot, and those that do cause laptop browser to redirect to t-mobile sale page. I will beat them... I will. But I joined xda for a little help, if you anyone does not wish to give the easy answer, I absolutely understand, just please direct me to the forum that has solved this as I am not "yet" a dev, but I'm getting there.
my config:
Model: SGH-M919
Android Version: 4.2.2
Baseband: M919uvuamdl
Kernal: 3.4.0-453951

Build: JDQ39.M919UVUAMDL
SELinux Status: Permissive
Rooted using ODIN because at the time I had read Odin was the only way.

I have 3 lines, all with unlimited Internet but tmobil only allows 2.5gb of tethering. Currently using slimbean stable on my s4, how do I get unlimited tethering? I've tried Wify Tether app but it doesn't work.
I went into the apn settings and I see several options.
Any advice would be appreciative. Spent an hour trying to figure this out :/

Using native tethering you get to share as much as you want what T-Mobile gets is that you used internet in your phone when in reality you were tethering I got like 60 GB each month most is by tethering

I've found that when I search and search and can't find something, it's because it was so fundamental a feature that it is automatically assumed people know how to use it.
What evidence do you have that T-Mobile is blocking your tethering after 2.5gb? Others have asked but it doesn't seem like that question has been answered. I have CM11 and have tethered like a fiend using the ROM's built-in hotspot feature, which the stock T-Mobile Account app doesn't even pick up on. Additionally I've been told that after 2.5gb, they don't block you, just throttle your speed down.

I use User Agent Switcher addon for firefox and choose Googlebot under Search Robots. I never get throttled using this method, although some site are wonky like netflix.
Well, apparently I did not try enough software combinations. I have finally got it working using Hotspot Shield free, paired with WiFi Tether Router. My GS4 is only about 3 weeks old, so this is likely the newest solution.

Lol, im trying to teach you the wonderous magic of searching It seriously helps A LOT. I hardly post any threads asking for this that and the other thing because i always find it by searching. Its how i found the answer to your question However, unlike other XDA members, i don't mind a little coaching to help you get your answer, some guys are just like. "God learn to use search. Pointless thread. effing noob" lol.
But you were on the right track when you said "hiding their data usage." thats exactly what you need to do. And to add to your search terms, encrypt your data will hide the usage Go my young grasshoper, search and yee shall find

Looks like all I need to do is installed an agent switches extension on either chrome or firefox. That correct?

Yeah Im still confused as well and I have also done a lot of research on the topic over the past few months.
Running AOSP, can we just use the native tethering (works great for me but then again i believe im still within the 2.5 gb of allotted tethering) or do we need to use the user agent switcher method?
Well since you guys are on the right track
You have a couple options:
1. (Prolly the best) Purchase or use a free VPN client ON YOUR DEVICE to encrypt ALL your data, now T-Mobile can't detect what the data is, its just data.
2. Use a User Agent switcher to change your user agent so it looks like the data is coming from a mobile device instead of a computer.
I wanna tether to my Ps3, I would like to know if it is possible to hide tethering as well. Tmobile is capped at 2.5, I found a way to do it on my Note 3, but my Ps3 wont connect that way, it only sees my S4, but like I said, its reached its cap limit.

I've always used wifi tether from here http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list you just have to chose the right settings and it works perfectly. I use it on my 360 all the time.

It's still early and I have a feeling it will take a while until we have some form of root (if at all), but where should we start? I personally do not know the first place to start, but if anyone out there has any ideas, feel free to discuss them here.
I would like to make a bounty, but it seems like the trend has been a purchase is required to get root.

lol, I was wondering when one of these threads would start up.
Do we even know if any of the normal parties will be working on root for the dt2?

I was tinkering with the Moto BL unlock site yesterday. Actually got it to the point where I could get the "request unlock key" to show, but would fail upon clicking that to actually getting the emailed key
I hate to be Debbie Downer. But yea.... dont buy this phone is you're expecting root or an unlocked bootloader to happen any time soon.

I know, its a shame. I absolutely LOVE moto devices, but have to seriously rethink since they seem to have stopped releasing dev devices

That most likely doesn't work because Verizon has to lock down everything. I hope it does though. Let us know what happens

Anyone know if Wondershare will root it? I've rooted my tablets with that one click root process before, but not with my DT2 yet. I have my DT2, but not sure why I'd root when there is no development for it yet. btw my DT1 with LP wouldn't root with Wondershare.

The Link is useless as are the Moto chat employees.
They left me realizing the unlock and root may be WAAAY down the road.
I root for the good apps as Verizon talked me out of my unlimited data. where is titanium????
The hotspot app of theirs (V's) does work out of the box. it just eats Data.... Ive been mad for a year over my decision. I MAY refuse the box in the morning just over Moto's shenanigans on not letting me unlock a $700 phone I paid for direct. FOOLS...

So you either don't have unlimited data or are paying the extra $30 a month for the feature.

Again, mobile hotspot doesn't work if you have unlimited data. Since it took about 6 months for the original Turbo to get mofo root, I have a feeling it's gonna take just as long, if ever. They still haven't found a way to write to the system within an image.
It's a shame, they got you good with getting you on a tiered line, and of course they're gonna give free mobile hotspot to tiered users for that exact reason that it eats up data. It gives you a greater chance of going over your data cap, therefore, putting more money into Verizon's greedy little pockets.
I usually average around 75GB a month, so there's no way I will EVER voluntarily give up my unlimited data. They're gonna have to pry it from my cold, dead hands before I ever give up my unlimited data.
