[Q] Tethering to PS3 does not work - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

So i have a T-Mobile GS3 and its rooted running Deviants Development Frosty Jelly bean. :good::good::good:
and i am using a moded app fo WifiTether. its called WifiTether_TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012.apk (Credit to the Techfanatic9 guy he showed me how to do it) the app runs great and actually i have no problem when i tether to my mac on my windows i had to download a firefox and chrome mod called used agent and change the setting to googlebot. then my internet worked perfectly. since i have T-Mobile i have unlimited 4g and that is great, because im am saving lots of money now that i have tethered rooting.
however when i try to plug it into my ps3 it does not work. at the beginning it did and then it stopped working. do you guys have any idea as to why and what can i do to fix this problem?

Some of these custom roms the devs make on here don't have tethering working i noticed too and the rom i would recomend for you which is guaranteed to have tethering working is the Xtremeperia rom for the galaxy s3 by Jovy in the android development section. I can totally understand your frustration where your other devices try to connect to your phone but they don't get anywhere. I have all you can eat true 4g from tmobile so i enjoy tethering.

Thats why. Its impossible to change a user agent on the PS3. You are completely out of luck with that plan. T-Mobile is blocking the PS3 UA.

Yea all you can eat 4g is hands down awesome. Nothing compares to it. Its even faster than the att uverse I had. Could you give me the link for that rom. I looked for it and could not find it. I want to test it out.

Just as I figured, do you think the might be a way to trick tmobile thru the phone instead of the ps3.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

Not only ps3, my it blocks my vita too.
To the person above me, probably. But a ps3 has to build something to change the agent.

Only way I could get it to work is by purchasing a VPN client.

Amazon EC2 micro open vpn free
Amazon ec2 micro open vpn > open vpn android > trevE mod wifi tether > laptop (no UA change)

i run CM10 stable and i reflashed an old linksys router with dd wrt software and turned it into a repeater then i connect it to my phone and tether. i run my ps3, tf700, desktop and other phones off of it.. havent had an issue with cm10 and tethering.

You must be blocking the ability to track your user agent because it's impossible to constantly tether without getting blocked eventually

I've done the same.. I've tried VPN as well but no luck.. I've done it all. To setting APN app to system app, then deleting APN's and restoring from the given "T-Mobile APN" xml file thats here on XDA.. but still no luck.. I'm running T-Mo's Note 2.. Of course i can get the laptop/desktop's to work because of the UA but other than that no luck on my end...
Maybe a different VPN app? I'm thinking if theres a way to change the phone somehow, instead of messing with the PSN or PS3's UA... hmm..
I haven't confirmed the USB tether to computer with router fix yet.. Seeing as my phone won't turn on USB tethering for the life of it.. :/ I can flash DD-WRT to my router if it helps.. any suggestions?
EDIT: Also, I'm on the unlimited 4G plan as well. I've also changed ROM's and no luck.. Running Jedi X8, but going to try other ones that may work better with Tethering.. (I've also tried MIUI as well.. the most current one didn't have any luck either)

USB 4G Tether

Wanted to share this with anyone who isn't aware. We can tether our ET4G on 4G but it requires USB and a 3rd party app. I tested it tonight with the free version of EasyTether and it works like a charm. Not personally interested in spending $10 for the full app but to some it may be worth it.
I haven't tested Klink but it's only $4 and it may work as well as a cheaper alternative.

Sweet, checking that out now. I see the free version doesn't allow https. I'll have to download the app to see how much the full version costs because I don't see it listed in the market.
To use these tethering method doesn't required the phone to be rooted, right? Also, will I be charged if I try to use it and can sprint figure out that I am tethering for free? I don't want to get a bill for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. How safe it is to tether undetected and are lots of people doing it for free with no penalty? I would like to tether for free but am just too afraid of getting caught and charged for it.
To be honest with you I used to have AT&T and now I have sprint and i've never once got a txt or anything in the mail telling me to stop. On AT&T I was running Cyanogen Mod and on my ET4G i'm running Calkulin's which has NoCIQ. If you aren't familiar with NoCIQ it basically makes it so sprint can't tell how your phone is using the data.
I wouldn't trust tethering if you're running a stock rom, even if the dev of the software says it's safe.

I think you might want to quantify your statement regarding NoCIQ. I've yet to see any published report from any reliable source showing it being used for data measurement. All a carrier has to do is look for unusual spikes in data volume.

I've had an android on sprint for almost 2 years now, always rooted, always tethering, always stock rom. Ciq still on there. They have never told me anything. And I always use 3rd party apps for tethering. I honestly don't think they know/care. At the end of the day, it works for the most of us, and we don't really abuse it; thus, they really shouldn't have a problem with it. They're bull**** hot spot app from sprint is ridiculously slow anyway. There's a huge difference in speed... its almost like they want us to find our own way of tethering lol.
That's my rationale and I'm sticking to it.

You may be right.. but they would have to prove what is using the data.. I have a torrent app on my phone I download stuff with and that uses a ton of data with out being tethered.

If you're rooted Android Wired USB Tether works great with 4G and it's free.

running calkulins 2.0.1a rom w/ ek02 modem and usb tether works with 4g
I've been using Wireless Tether for Root Users, it's free and works with 4G. I'm new to the 4G scene, having recently upgraded from a CDMA Hero but I've used it for years without problem. The only downside to it is it will read as an adhoc network.
I have no idea how the data looks to Sprint, I have yet to see them care.

Funny..I came in here to ask the same thing. Wifitether works but it doesn't broadcast the SSID properly. Not even by typing the name in manually can you connect. So, no...it doesn't work in JB. But I also would like tether to work.
I tried all afternoon with many different apps to get some sort of tether working, and was unsuccessful with anything other than "Klink Tether" which is a paid app in the Play store. It is a USB tether and it works very well. Highly recommended.
Cm10. Wifi tether worked on my gs3 if I remember correctly.
Which cm10 won't be too much longer for an alpha for us.

Yes.
Or someone mentioned BT tethering with different app. I don't know since I don't use it.
EasyTether works. It's a $10 app, but there is a free version. Free version blocks all https websites, however.
Just to be clear, this is a USB tether. I don't know of any hotspot hacks yet.
EasyTether also requires a program running on your computer.

II think it used to be cheaper. I don't remember how much I paid. I think it's worth it though. Besides... not so many other options at this time and still much less than one month paying for official hotspot.
You know whats funny....(not really) is while at the Sprint store, every phone that was being sold, the salesperson said. You do understand that illegally tethering will get your contract cancelled, do you understands? .
Asked me too and I was like, huh, tethering, I just go to Starbucks :silly:? (hoping he wouldn't hit the big fat tethering button on my home screen (old phone) he was holding. whoops....
I wonder how exactly can they detect someone tethering?
It's a violation of your contract, so yeah, they "reserve the right to terminate". Same can be said for a lot of things that happen on this forum. Just don't abuse it and they won't bother you.

USB tether is built into the phone. Has Sprint blocked it? It doesn't seem to work for me.

I'm in a hotel with WiFi which I've paid for. The problem is I want to use all my WiFi toys and to do this I will need to pay 50 per toy (4 toys it could get quite expensive)...
So what I want to do is log in to the wifi with my s3 then tether all my toys to the s3....
I've looked for a tethering apps but no luck
Does any one have any ideas how I can do this...
Thanks

Unlimited tethering on s4 using slimbean

I have 3 lines, all with unlimited Internet but tmobil only allows 2.5gb of tethering. Currently using slimbean stable on my s4, how do I get unlimited tethering? I've tried Wify Tether app but it doesn't work.

I don't think any AOSP Roms have the data cap hack. Most of the TW Roms have the hack baked into the system. You may wanna try TW before going over your data limit. I have unlimited and use tethering all the time also I use the Wi-Fi tether app instead of the native hot spot.

So I am stuck @ 2.5gb? I called TMobil to increase my tethering, they said NO.
I see people all over the forums saying they have unlimited tethering by hiding their data usage and they always emphasize not to abuse it. I am giving tmobil a good large sum of money, 200 bucks.
So nobody knows of a unlimited tethering method?
Been looking around, according to some, Cyanogen should already come with the necessary coding to allow unlimited tethering but than again I am using SlimBean which I do not know if that has anything to do with it.

Again, unlimited tethering is impossible through "coding." It is handled by T-Mobile servers. A little Googling would tell you what you have to do however, I always thought if you paid 15 bucks extra each month they would include unlimited tethering?

OK, I am an admitted noob to this site, just joined today in fact, but that is only because I have been trolling these forums looking for a clear answer to this issue for weeks now. I also have TM and am capped. I use my mobile hot spot to do my homework for the online school I attend. and recently switched from the big V to TM because of the cost, and now I'm screwed. I have searched so many forums and term strings it is not funny. I have tried vpn, hotspot shield, private internet access, and a host of wifi tether apps, and have not found a working combo. I have even tried modifying strings using SQLite. Most app combinations will not activate hotspot, and those that do cause laptop browser to redirect to t-mobile sale page. I will beat them... I will. But I joined xda for a little help, if you anyone does not wish to give the easy answer, I absolutely understand, just please direct me to the forum that has solved this as I am not "yet" a dev, but I'm getting there.

I've found that when I search and search and can't find something, it's because it was so fundamental a feature that it is automatically assumed people know how to use it.
What evidence do you have that T-Mobile is blocking your tethering after 2.5gb? Others have asked but it doesn't seem like that question has been answered. I have CM11 and have tethered like a fiend using the ROM's built-in hotspot feature, which the stock T-Mobile Account app doesn't even pick up on. Additionally I've been told that after 2.5gb, they don't block you, just throttle your speed down.

I use User Agent Switcher addon for firefox and choose Googlebot under Search Robots. I never get throttled using this method, although some site are wonky like netflix.
Well, apparently I did not try enough software combinations. I have finally got it working using Hotspot Shield free, paired with WiFi Tether Router. My GS4 is only about 3 weeks old, so this is likely the newest solution.

Lol, im trying to teach you the wonderous magic of searching It seriously helps A LOT. I hardly post any threads asking for this that and the other thing because i always find it by searching. Its how i found the answer to your question However, unlike other XDA members, i don't mind a little coaching to help you get your answer, some guys are just like. "God learn to use search. Pointless thread. effing noob" lol.
But you were on the right track when you said "hiding their data usage." thats exactly what you need to do. And to add to your search terms, encrypt your data will hide the usage Go my young grasshoper, search and yee shall find

Looks like all I need to do is installed an agent switches extension on either chrome or firefox. That correct?

Yeah Im still confused as well and I have also done a lot of research on the topic over the past few months.
Running AOSP, can we just use the native tethering (works great for me but then again i believe im still within the 2.5 gb of allotted tethering) or do we need to use the user agent switcher method?
Well since you guys are on the right track
You have a couple options:
1. (Prolly the best) Purchase or use a free VPN client ON YOUR DEVICE to encrypt ALL your data, now T-Mobile can't detect what the data is, its just data.
2. Use a User Agent switcher to change your user agent so it looks like the data is coming from a mobile device instead of a computer.
I wanna tether to my Ps3, I would like to know if it is possible to hide tethering as well. Tmobile is capped at 2.5, I found a way to do it on my Note 3, but my Ps3 wont connect that way, it only sees my S4, but like I said, its reached its cap limit.

I've always used wifi tether from here http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list you just have to chose the right settings and it works perfectly. I use it on my 360 all the time.

I keep it there permanently. Interestingly enough, I was never able to send mms in my third party sms app. After changing the apn, every thing runs even better than before

So I bought the app last night and when I used it my hotspot data immediately started getting eaten up. Any tips on this?

I installed the app. Hit the enable button and it said I needed to disable an "always scanning WiFi" option so I did. Then enabled it and started tethering. Opened up the tmo app to check usage and it was using hotspot data.

I watched the video (nice video btw) and kept thinking what if you hooked up a laptop to it with no android spoofing agents. An ipad is like a mobile device. But a windows pc with a desktop user agent in a web browser is another story. I use my connection for work using the default tethering and it does not register any data through the vpn except web pages.

I understand your concern. I can honestly tell you that i have tethered my computer, and downloaded torrents, using upwards of 4-5 gbs in one sitting, as well as used my PS4, and PS3 all of my note 3. So far this month, i have used 27 GB
Thanks by the way, im glad you liked the video
Thanks for the reply. That was the only concern i had with the video was that it was with an ipad bc of how tmobile sees data come through. I may need to use my Google survey money to buy that app. Technically free for me. Have you used Web browsers as well on your pc with no user agents without it registering?

I have! I am having such a great experience with this app that i am debating on canceling my home internet service LOL imagine that? I am debating getting another t-mobile line, activating that with my note 2 that i have sitting in my drawer, and hooking my note 2 into my wireless router, and serve internet to the entire house!
Not exactly sure if i want to cut ties with my ISP though....still thinking on it.
Honestly i love tmobile! I have not signed up for comcast or Verizon bc of tmobile. Best deal on the planet. I got 40 mbps the other day. ..get 30 from my house.

i totally agree brotha! I switched from AT&T about 1 month ago when they did the ETF promo....haven't looked back. Anddd i am saving roughly 100 bucks a month....that....is insane. All around better service, same amazing devices, UNLIMITED DATA, and lowest cost for a "big 4" wireless carrier.
Yup. I am in Pittsburgh and the service is very good here. I can't speak for traveling yet but in the metropolitan area i am in i could not be happier for 75 and change each month. I usually go through 100 plus gigs a month. I don't get why people who don't travel far even consider the other big carriers unless they have a family plan. ..that is another story.

Nope, you have to root.
I think T-mobile have just found out about it today. my internet got disconnecting around 1am central time. i was using modified apn. everything was working fine. i tried everything with no success, i called T-mobile, and they have to reset the signal, and reset the apn to its original setting. and then switch to 2g network, then switch to Auto. after all that i got my internet working. so i tried again to miss with the apn, what i found out is that no matter apn i use, will not work, unless i choose the protected apn. and my internet get disconnecting until i change to 2g then Auto.
What i believe is T-mobile have just known about the apn trick.
please everyone has the same issue report back.

Are you using the newest version of the T-Mobile My Account app?? I think it can control and monitor wi-fi usage to block this trick. I block some of its permissions using LBE Security Master.
I personally use this has never failed me ... I have tethered almost 200GB Data with no problem ....
