I have resisted updating my rooted Nexus 7 running stock 4.3 (JSS15R) to kitkat but am now ready to do so.
I know to do a nandroid backup (is doing it via rom toolbox good enough? ) and a fresh tibu backup.
But I have some last minute questions.
1. should I just accept the ota update or as recommended elsewhere should I use the file from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380113
2. will the update make me lose root? Can that be prevented? (I always have trouble getting the correct drivers to access the Nexus)
3. any other precautions?
Finally : to prevent accidental update before I was ready, I had renamed the system update file when it first downloaded. Now I don't remember where I found it and system will not re-download it with a message that verification failed.

Its a nexus device, even if you lose root, it takes like 3 seconds to root it again.. I want to say doing the ota when I first got my nexus 7 did not result in losing root, but I might be incorrect on that one..

I know that is true for most people, but it always takes me a couple of days to get the right drivers working for my windows 7 laptop to communicate properly with the Nexus. Then, once adb and fastboot can access the device, you are correct and the rooting is a breeze. That is why I cringe at having to go through that again.
The drivers are simple.. Just Google "nexus adb drivers" and download them from Google directly. Once you have them downloaded go into device manager, find your nexus, right click it, and select update driver. Choose the have disk option and navigate to the nexus drivers. Should be all set after that. I'll research where the update is stored on your device and reply in a minute.
EDIT: All updates should be downloaded to your /cache partition.

My /cache contains 3 folders
Where would I find the ota update file? Maybe I can install it directly.

If memory serves, when I looked for it before, it was in a "fota" directory under /cache. Look for a zip file.
I don't believe you can install it directly, nor would I want to try anyway.
Once you find it, delete it and then redownload it

What browser are you using? Have you downloaded any apps with your browser? I seem to remember having the same, maybe when I was using Xscope.....
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
You know, I got those same things. I didn't think twice and just deleted them. I wonder. . .
lol those are leftovers from downloading through any browser. i get those in my downloads folder whenever i downloading something through my phone's internet. You will know when you get the official OTA. nothing will happen to your phone unless you get the pop-up saying there is an OTA available and ask if you would like to download and install it.
Just using the stock browser, have not downloaded anything in quite a while, defanitly not on the 30th?
I though about deleting them but figured i'd ask, besides if they were cache'd data from a browser download why would they be packaged?
Not saying i have something but just found it peculiar they are all packaged and in the root cache where a ota would show up right?
Looks like one is missing ?
OTA doesnt download anything until you approve it.

I believe it actually downloads the OTA and stores in cache before it prompts you. Don't quote me though, I've been wrong before lol

i did the 2.0.1 to 2.1 update on my wife's droid, it didnt download anything until after you approved to do the update. you can also see with the EVO froyo updates, it asks if you want to update over 4g/mobile/wifi or just wifi.
I had no idea what it was but I though maybe they were incrementally pushing pieces or something, I'm new to android, I figured it would probably be nothing but didnt want to delete something that could help someone.
If you think about it, if they pushed a few small pieces to your cache and the the last piece could parse it all and install it wouldnt that save alot of bandwidth for them? or at least even the load? Thats what made me ponder what it was. I'm sure its not browser cache or it wouldnt be a .apk it would probably be a sql db wouldnt it?
I tried to copy them to the root of my sd card but it wouldnt let me for whatever reasonthrough root explorer. maybe i'll copy them out over adb and extract the .apk just to see whats in it, That should tell me.
Anyway figured some other insight would be nice.

I thought someone from Unrevoked said on twitter to the evo users if you get the ota message to upgrade dont do it and the upgrade file would be stored it the root cache? heck iono i've slept since then.
I believe those are failed or canceled .apk downloads.
Why don't you just copy them to your pc and take a peak inside the apk with 7zip?

but it couldn't find the phone... says 'make sure usb cable connected'
am using unbranded phone.
Can't you get into recovery at all? (Assuming you used unrevoked you should be able to).
Then I'd do a full wipe/reflash from there.

I full wiped and reflashed at least 3 times, but that didn't fix the broken root
i want someone to help me find the right RUU for my phone
try this one:
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe
you need a froyo.
1) Please post in the correct section first [Q&A, not DEV]
2) There's a selection of pre-rooted stock roms available via SEARCH at the top
3) Flash via renaming to update.zip and sticking on the root of your SD card
3a) If fails, name it pb99img.zip and do it via voldown+power
How you lost root rights and delete this directory? I think to you need Froyo release RUU

or does it contain 0.93 HBoot?

hakuna matata... problem solved
The RUU can't find the Device without HTC Sync, and it must be the latest version.
thank you very much for every one tried to help.
So has anyone applied the security update and maintained root? I ask this because the update says it will fix security flaws and malicious exploits (root falls here) so has anyone had problems with it and root??? Thanks

OK so I applied the update and root is fine so we are good there.... [saqib] I'm not entirely sure how to create a debrick image
In the how to debrick thread I posted a recovery flashable script you can use. Just flash in recovery and itll do the rest. Once done just upload the debrick.img it created on your sdcard.
If you cant find the script, let me know. Might be several pages back in the thread.

After updating SuperSU, it gave me options to disable KNOX, which disabled the annoying blocking of apps(I believe it did).
2.I installed busybox from the Play Store. I also installed Android Terminal Emulator from the Play Store.
3. I opened Android Terminal Emulator and entered these two lines, entering between them After entering the first, I granted root access, then ran the second line.
su
busybox dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/sdcard/debrick.img bs=1M count=128
4. After those two lines were ran, the debrick.img file was on the root of either the external or internal sdcard. I copied that file to my desktop, and inserted my sd card into my computer(Using the MicroSD to SD Adapter).
5.Finally, I used Win32DiskImager to write the files to the Micro SDcard. After that, I pulled my battery and inserted the Micro SDCard into my phone and it was able to boot into recovery and download mode.
I saw a post about a pre rooted image file, but I'm wondering if there is a one click root method for this phone?

Thanks, I'll try it here in about an hour and see if it works. Can it cause a brick or boot loop if its incompatible or will it just say it failed to root with no harm to my phone?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I'm not certain as I know very little about the 2E variant of the phone so its still doing it at ur own risk.
Rooting compared to everything else such as bootloader unlocking or xposed installation is fairly safe in comparison though. All you essentially are doing though is adding a few files and sideloading SuperSU as far as I'm aware.

I can't seem to get the drivers insatlled.
I downloaded the zip from Asus website, but it's not an .exe file, so I'm stumped on how to install the drivers.
When I launch that root method, it says ADB Server out of date, killing...Daemon started successfully but it doesn't go any further than that.
I'm on Windows 10.
For the drivers, I believe I have the default Google ones installed and that worked fine for me. Don't remember where I got the tutorial from or how I did it anymore.
As for the ADB server try this link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979.

That's the one I'm using, and that's when it said the ADB server was out of date, and then it says Daemon started on port 5047...Daemon started successfully...
and then it doesn't do anything after that. There's gotta be something missing.

Hi folks,
Brand new D851 here! I want to get it fully updated to 20G before going ROM happy. I'm aware of the 20G flashable ZIP (here) but figured I'd just get it to download. The phone (new, from Amazon, unlocked) came with kitkat. I skipped the setup process and have no SIM in it; once I connected it to wireless it promptly downloaded and installed 20E. But there it sits. It doesn't seem to understand 20G should be waiting. Repeated checks for updates don't goose it along.
Is there some trick to this?
I will probably quickly exit stock, and then set up maybe Blisspop or something similar for 5.1.1, configuring for AT&T (I'm on ATT and bought the D851 due to unlocked bootloader).
I'm not shy flashing the zip I referenced above, just figured it might be better to update via the normal route if possible.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks again @mitbit2k3 . I went to the link you suggested and got the download tool; it updated my phone successfully after I installed the driver. There was a bit of foolishness about telling the device to do PC software but eventually got it connected. All is well. Upgrade only took ~10-15 minutes to download and install once started.
