I live in NW Indiana (just outside of Chicago) and last night my service was so slow I could not even stream Spotify (with 3-bars on the 3g meter), when I tested with speedtest app I was getting +,- 100 kbps, is that what I can expect from my new carrier?
My phone is rooted with Blazer rom and shows baseband EG31 and Kernel EG30, is that ok or could I have messed up the modem? I tested at 4:40am this morning and got over 1 mbps....
I have noticed, I live in New York, a significant service downgrade in the past three months. My unfounded theory is that it has something to do with the Iphone launch, because service was great about 6 months ago. I had very few problems.
I've noticed the same thing here in Oak Park, CA (just a bit NW of LA), starting about a couple of months ago, on both my Photon and my Epic Touch. Sprint's 3G service has become terribly inconsistent and generally bad.
Its all over thats why im switching to verizon. The worst thing is the reps act like nothings wrong

They keep saying the iphone isn't having any problems. I wonder if they are degrading android to male iphone look better. We are switching to Verizon when the contract is up.
Sprint might be doing work in your area. See map here: https://network.sprint.com/

Same here, data sucks balls big time but voice so far has had no issues.
Its the dat part that is killing it. Yet we have to pay that extra 10 bucks a month just because its a smart phone aka data usage. What a joke.
Or maybe that extra 10 bucks is to pay for data usage for Carrier IQ... LOL
It's not really because of the iPhone, although that plays a small part in it. Sprint has just been lazy overall in maintaining and upgrading their network while the majority of customers have switched to smart phones

Honestly, I think its just work being done on the network. I noticed the same thing, but 3 days ago I did a prl n profile update (I had done this several times before) n started getting much better service, including 4g. I'm not saying g this is the case for everyone. If you do jump ship, have fun with Verizon. I dealt with them for years before sprint. And if you think sprints customer service is bad. . . Also their data prices are INSANE! but, Verizon does have a better network. TO ME, being able to stream my music collection without worrying about data is more important than being able to watch a movie on 3g, but thats why we get choices if sprint was right for everyone, Verizon wouldn't be in business, and its the same the other way around
If I was helpful, give thanks

When I go within 100ft of the tower I use in my home in Toledo I get full signal strength and peek speeds of 100 kbps, sprint really needs to get on that. Then again in Cleveland I get 1mbit+.
Sprints network is really unstable right now so its probably not the best time to sign a contract with them if you use a lot of data.

Just keeping checking the website that was posted before. We are making a lot of updates and changes to make the network better. I have seen better improvement myself and know more are coming. The next two years are going to have a better and faster network. Remember that the USA is huge so it does take time. The other thing to do is preach to everyone to use wifi whenever they can so that there are less phones on the network until the project is completed in 2013!

Yup lots of variables.
each site can handle only so many people. Older sites have overall capacity issues. Thats to say some sites can handle x amount of users, and x amount of data. Some sites get user upgrades to handle more users but not data, causing a super slow down.
Then theres the issue of interference. Add in any issues your device might be having due to flashing a custom rom, kernel or modem and it all adds up to way to many possibilities.
The good news is, you verified your modem is good, not only did you get slow data speeds one test, but later it was good.
I have a similar experience with my Stock Epic Touch.
Some locations in Dallas, TX have horrible data speeds, while others are hit and miss.
One of the worse i am aware of is the are of i635 / hwy 80. Ever weekend i meet my dad for lunch at a BBQ place in that area. I test every weekend and the speeds are SOO SLOW. But once i leave the area im back to 1meg or so..
Overall i am still happy. I am just patient i guess.
yap service absolutely sucks, that's why I have started using the ROAM method and hopefully within a couple of months sprint will let me leave at no cost.
I think the implementation of "Network Vision" is going to cause things to get worse before they get better in many areas.
I live in NW Indiana as well and this is how it normally is

I was up in Michigan City last month for 4 days (Mother in Law and Wife's Grandma live there) and was in and around Hammond and Valpo as well. I got much better speeds than that with my EG4T. The 3G in MC was actually superior to the 3G down here in DFW, although they don't seem to have 4G...
I was running Caulkin's 1.0 at the time, and it was pretty nice up there.
What's up guys. Alright last Friday my wife and I headed to Sprint and bought a couple of phones. She got the Iphone 4S and I got the Epic Touch. Previously we were with Verizon.... she had the Inc2 and I had the Thunderbolt.
When we were at Sprint I asked the rep. about signal strength and he said that Sprints towers ran off the same towers as Verizon.
When I first started messing with my Epic and went on the net I was at work and the data speeds were ridiculously slow. So I thought I gotta root this thing.
Well I'm rooted.... oc'ed to 1.5 with performance gov. I just googled "slow data speeds for the Epic 4g touch" it took a little over 5 minutes to just open up the Google page. I'm at work.... in a 3g only area... and with my HTC Thunderbolt it might take 10 seconds to open up that same page.
This is freaking me out a little. I can't believe tho that all of you out there with 3g only are having this same problem. When I googled this issue I read about guys starting a petition to send to Sprint due to the slow data speeds.
Would I would like to know before I call Sprint and raise hell is is there a fix or a workaround for this?? My wifes Iphone is also having terrible data speeds.
Pretty concerned about this.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like its time for a new prl and roam control. This phone is known for slow 3g data speeds. Actually sprint is known for slow data speeds. How are your wifes speeds on the ip4s? Dont forget, you always have 14 days to opt out of the contract or exchange the phone.

This is too much fu#@ing fun. Now my phone is jacked. I took the phone back to stock before I called Sprint. After complaining about data speeds the service rep had me key in the dialer the pound symbol twice I think and some numbers whatever. Well now I have NO data. We tried over and over to activate my phone. Obviously tho you can't do it without a signal.
So he quickly said there must be an outage in your area and he will be sending out a service tech and calling me back in a half hour.
After an hour I called back. Went thru almost the same thing with someone else. Now I need to take my phone in for service.
I called Sprint to ***** about slow data speeds and now I don't have data. I'm laughing just typing this........

Welcome to the wonderful world of sprint customer service. That whole sending out a tech to your area is a sham. Really sprint is that the best you can come up with? I have been told that NUMEROUS times and never have I ever heard anything back regarding the techs results, or if a tech even came out. Complaints on data speeds just arent that high on their priority list. If you have issues with the speeds now, they are just going to frustrate you even more later. If you really love the phone and want sprints unlimited. There are options to improve data speeds, like roaming on verizons network, which we do for free. If you are more interested in that I can send you in the right direction.

if you use the pro each your data. using verizon's hacked prl will be great as far as speeds go. but if you use more than 300 mb you have a chanceof getting a letter telling you to quit. I am on over a gigabyte right now and was about 4 gigs last month and no letter. but you are taking a risk. if you disregard the letter and continue to use it they can terminate you for too much roaming. 3g is great in my area even without the hacked prl. by the way if you are on the hacked prl every minute you talk comes out of your roaming minutes. except for the regular nights and weekends.

I'm just gonna try and cap out at 300 every month.

Yeah. I'll just do that. I'm tired of the speeds I get here. It's less than 50kb/s with 3g coverage. It's ridiculous.
It really depends on your tower imho. 3g speeds do suck a lot of the times depending on which tower youre connected to.
In my house, i get 4g and 3g speeds (~10mbps / 1.3 mbps) but i go down the street 1/4 of a mile and bam no 4g and 3g speeds of ~100-300 kbps...
Really depends. Might want to invest in an airave or just drop and switch to tmobile / Vzw.
So you are going from bad to worse ?
If anything sprint is beter from AT&T and Tmobile. Those 2 have 2gb data limit and increased termination fees, not to mention their horrible customer services. I had AT&T for 7 years, and Tmobile for 6 years and must say sprint is bad but compered to those 2, sprint is golden.

Well after spending about an hour on the phone with service techs at Sprint yesterday I now have working data.
I was just sitting here messing with the phone(I have wifi at home) went into Sprint zone hit activate and now the phone is reactivated. I was on the phone with three different techs last night after the first one borked data. Pulling batteries, punching in numerous codes in the dailer, rebooting etc.
So whatever...... I'm just happy to have data back......and I did just get three voicemails from the tech that messed up data on my phone. I feel pretty stupid myself for not just trying to activate the phone on my own.
I really don't want this to turn into a hating on Sprint thread. I've had a rough experience with them so far but everyone makes mistakes. Now back to getting this thing rooted again and find another badass ROM and kernel to flash and get to roaming!!

Hello, I am new to this forum and I have a few questions.
My phone is on Sprint, as of November 2011 I switch to a smartphone and have nothing but trouble. Not the phone, but with sprint.
The problem is that inside of my office, I have no signal. Only with Sprint though, all other providers has a good signal here.
This weekend I found out an app called netmonitor, so I check it out today while at my office and it looks like my phone is bouncing off towers all over the place trying to find a signal.
If I walk out the door, I have a strong signal and it gives an address.
I am wondering if there is any way that I can lock it to this tower or something, so that it will quit searching all over. Looking at the address’ in netmonitor, it is pinging towers that may be up to 10 miles away or so.
The phone is rooted, and I have roam control installed which works well. But I would like to figure something out to get this to work as it should, else dump Sprint which I don’t really want to do just yet. They are of no help though with this situation.
I don’t really know much about these smartphones since my experience with them so far has been not so good. Please speak idiot speak if you have some ideas or suggestions…
Thanks!!!
I do not believe you can force connection to a specific tower. The problem you have is with building penetration at your work. You must be on the very edge of coverage for the closest tower and it cannot penetrate the walls.
If this is happening at home too, then you can at the very least call for a free Airave from Sprint. Otherwise you can use the lack of coverage in your primary areas as a possible reason to get the ETF waived to jump carriers.
Signal Problems must be the S and P in Sprint! I also have been thinking about dropping Sprint. My girlfriend and I just moved in together, she has Verizon, her Pandora doesn't freeze up, Youtube doesn't buffer at all, and great downloads speeds all just on 3G! Meanwhile Sprints network is totally opposite.
My GF laughed when we decided to lower our bills and combine cell phone plans, and she get on my Sprint network.
Ill stop right there, didn't mean to start trolling. I'm not even going to talk about 4G LTE. But try the airrave box out, I'm waiting on one now.

Just had a thought, have you tried different modems? As far as EC05, EI22, FC09, etc, I'm going to try this over the next few days.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
I agree with your S & P!
I have the device, you need to have a high speed internet connection for it to work.
It will do the job as long as you can be within 100 feet or so. That would be good for an apartment or house even, but not a whole area, or many areas.
The other thing to pay attention to with it is, make sure you have a large amount of package plan minutes.
Things like unlimited mobile to mobile don’t matter with this, if you are using the airave to connect, it uses plan minutes.
As for modems, that doesn’t fall under my idiot speak area, so I am not sure what you mean. Definitely not sure how to modify it/them.
Please let me know.
Since you said your phone is rooted i assume that you rooted it yourself. If you rooted your phone, using Odin to change modems on your phone is fairly easy. Only problem is searching and finding the modems. Search on youtube for QBKing Epic 4g odin modems, dont have a link to post but you should find it.
As far as that airave box, if you have to highspeed internet, that would be useless for me. The voice and phone calls i dont have a problem with its the 3g speeds. I usually send mms and surf internet using wifi anyway.

I think mine is on EL22 now, as I recall seeing that somewhere, and I keep getting a notification to upgrade to FC09.
I thought those were the software levels of the phone though…Anyhow, as you can tell I don’t know much about this stuff. Trying to learn a few things here.
I'm currently running CM9 (epicmtd) - FC09 modem. Ever since I upgraded to FC09 (I think.... may have been when I got to CM9 Beta), I have been having connection issues. I can't even make a call in my own house. I have to walk outside to start the call, then I can walk back inside.
I'm going to try dropping back to EL22 to see if that will fix it, I can't deal with this.

Switched to the truly unlimited 4G data plan on the 5th. Everything was fine up until last night. I've gone from having an awesome connection to the T-Mobile network 90ms Ping, 25MB Down, 4MB up. To a 1000MS ping, 0.05MB Down/Up.
I called T-Mobile verified my unlimited was good and there was no throttle in place. I'm not even at 10GB yet. What could possibly be going on that could cause this? I'm rooted, Stock Rom, UVALH2.

Nope. I went to a buddies place over in East Dundee (60118) and my speeds were back to normal. It has to be the tower in my area is having problems? If I call T-Mobile shouldn't they know if they have a tower experiencing problems?
Hmm..
Just got off the phone with T-Mobile. It appears there is a problem with three of the towers in my area. 84 other people have already called in and they said an engineering team is working on it. I've been on these 56k speeds for the past two days already going on a third. Should I tell them I want my data fee covered for the month or what?
Anyways just glad it's their network and not my phone. Wonder how long this will take.

Call T-Mobile. When the prompt asks you why you're calling say Tech Support. Then tell the rep that in the past few days your data speeds have been 56K like. You know it's not your phone. They will then check the towers in your area and see if there are any engineering tickets/requests active. When I called after some searching the guy told me I was the 85th person in my area to call in and that there was an engineering ticket active. They said it could take up to 72 hours for it to be fixed. Tonight will mark 72 hours so we will see what happens.
I know if I leave my house and drive about 15 miles to a buddies house which runs off of different towers my speeds are normal and everything is fine. Something to do with the antennas in my area.
I'm getting what I think is normal in this area, not in my normal neighborhood so I cant really test any more. But it's at 2.5 so I'm happy for now.

Called T-Mobile a little while ago to see if their engineers had located the problem yet and if there was a solid ETA... Nothing so far the ticket has yet to be updated. She said things like this can take up to a week to get resolved and begged for my patience.
They offered me a $10 credit for the downtime. Here's my real question. Lets say this issue is not resolved within a week. Am I able to get out of my contract due to the fact I can't get my promised data connection at my residence?
Input?

Lol, no. I was in an area the coverage map rated as the best for voice and HSPA. I received only EDGE in my apartment and had frequent signal drops. I called T-Mobile every other day for three weeks. They won't do anything for you because the coverage map says you have service, and the engineers were working on a fix ASAP.
It takes a minute to be unthrottled

I just moved and have been notice a lack in signal on my Note 3 and plan on trading a friend Friday for his G3 and was curious how everyone's signal has been affected switching to the G3.
Service isn't horrible but there are certain rooms I drop calls. Yet my family members with their iPhone 4 have no problems making calls everywhere I struggle.
Of course I have Verizon and different carriers may see different results. But just want to get an idea if I should worry about having worse service and not being able to use my G3 at my new house.

I have Sprint, and just switched from a note 3 to the g3. My office is a fringe service area and the G3 is more reliable and seems to grab a signal better than the note 3.
The note 3 would sometimes error out sending texts and occasionally not ring on inbound calls (I have my office phone twinned to my cell) The g3 is relaible enough where I don't even enable wifi calling at work. $.02
I came from the Galaxy S4 and the cell reception with the Verizon G3 is slightly worse.
I have also found that in mountain areas (where the phone can see numerous towers but only the closest one works) it bounces between cell towers constantly and will never stay locked on the cell tower that works. Quite frustrating actually.
terrible on tmobile. but im pretty sure it's just tmobile.
Well thanks for the info guys! I actually ended up trading and thought I should make an update with my results.
So far this phone hasn't had any issues with phone calls in my house which is all I wanted. As far as I can tell the signal in dBm is the same or maybe a little words but only by 1-3 dBm.
I know there was some kinda issues with the last update for the note 3 that broke something in the phone that hurt the service and the only way to fix it was to get it replaced. So not sure if that was my issue or what.
Ran into a little issue when we traded our phones at the Verizon store. I was on my way home and my phone was downloading all my apps and started getting alerts that I hit 50%, 70% n 90% of my data usage when I previously had unlimited data. Looked on my Verizon and some how I went from unlimited data to .723 GB.
So after being on the phone with Verizon for 30 minutes the gentleman said there was nothing he, or his supervisor, or even his supervisors supervisor could do. But there seemed to be some glitch in the system and I shouldn't have lost unlimited data and they have to fill out a form and I should have my unlimited data back in 1-3 days.
Overall I'm loving this phone wayyyy more than my note and really want to root it but figure I should wait till my data issue gets resolved incase Verizon can somehow check stuff out on my phone Just really hope everything works out with my data.
