3g speeds?????? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

What's up guys. Alright last Friday my wife and I headed to Sprint and bought a couple of phones. She got the Iphone 4S and I got the Epic Touch. Previously we were with Verizon.... she had the Inc2 and I had the Thunderbolt.
When we were at Sprint I asked the rep. about signal strength and he said that Sprints towers ran off the same towers as Verizon.
When I first started messing with my Epic and went on the net I was at work and the data speeds were ridiculously slow. So I thought I gotta root this thing.
Well I'm rooted.... oc'ed to 1.5 with performance gov. I just googled "slow data speeds for the Epic 4g touch" it took a little over 5 minutes to just open up the Google page. I'm at work.... in a 3g only area... and with my HTC Thunderbolt it might take 10 seconds to open up that same page.
This is freaking me out a little. I can't believe tho that all of you out there with 3g only are having this same problem. When I googled this issue I read about guys starting a petition to send to Sprint due to the slow data speeds.
Would I would like to know before I call Sprint and raise hell is is there a fix or a workaround for this?? My wifes Iphone is also having terrible data speeds.
Pretty concerned about this.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like its time for a new prl and roam control. This phone is known for slow 3g data speeds. Actually sprint is known for slow data speeds. How are your wifes speeds on the ip4s? Dont forget, you always have 14 days to opt out of the contract or exchange the phone.

There is a simple workaround go back to vzw or try Tmobile or att .....Sprint is hurting right now but they are in the process of fixing but I wouldn't buy a wimax phone with sprint going to lte this year it's already in the works... Take those phones back naaaaaooooowwwwzzzz

Appreciate the response. Just got off the phone with Sprint. Dude is supposed to call me back in a half hour. He believes there may be some kind of outage in my area and sending a service tech out.
I tried to explain to him that the 3g speeds have been bad since I bought the phone last Friday.
Wondering now how I'm going to get out of this contract..........this sucks.

If you are a data whore you are going to pay a lot more at other carriers. Sprint is the only unlimited.

This is too much fu#@ing fun. Now my phone is jacked. I took the phone back to stock before I called Sprint. After complaining about data speeds the service rep had me key in the dialer the pound symbol twice I think and some numbers whatever. Well now I have NO data. We tried over and over to activate my phone. Obviously tho you can't do it without a signal.
So he quickly said there must be an outage in your area and he will be sending out a service tech and calling me back in a half hour.
After an hour I called back. Went thru almost the same thing with someone else. Now I need to take my phone in for service.
I called Sprint to ***** about slow data speeds and now I don't have data. I'm laughing just typing this........
Goodnight

Welcome to the wonderful world of sprint customer service. That whole sending out a tech to your area is a sham. Really sprint is that the best you can come up with? I have been told that NUMEROUS times and never have I ever heard anything back regarding the techs results, or if a tech even came out. Complaints on data speeds just arent that high on their priority list. If you have issues with the speeds now, they are just going to frustrate you even more later. If you really love the phone and want sprints unlimited. There are options to improve data speeds, like roaming on verizons network, which we do for free. If you are more interested in that I can send you in the right direction.

if you use the pro each your data. using verizon's hacked prl will be great as far as speeds go. but if you use more than 300 mb you have a chanceof getting a letter telling you to quit. I am on over a gigabyte right now and was about 4 gigs last month and no letter. but you are taking a risk. if you disregard the letter and continue to use it they can terminate you for too much roaming. 3g is great in my area even without the hacked prl. by the way if you are on the hacked prl every minute you talk comes out of your roaming minutes. except for the regular nights and weekends.

I read in the thread that Sprint will start getting pissed If you go over 300mb and that its in the contract. I didn't read anywhere about being charged extra.
I'm just gonna try and cap out at 300 every month.

Yeah. I'll just do that. I'm tired of the speeds I get here. It's less than 50kb/s with 3g coverage. It's ridiculous.

It really depends on your tower imho. 3g speeds do suck a lot of the times depending on which tower youre connected to.
In my house, i get 4g and 3g speeds (~10mbps / 1.3 mbps) but i go down the street 1/4 of a mile and bam no 4g and 3g speeds of ~100-300 kbps...
Really depends. Might want to invest in an airave or just drop and switch to tmobile / Vzw.

So you are going from bad to worse ?
If anything sprint is beter from AT&T and Tmobile. Those 2 have 2gb data limit and increased termination fees, not to mention their horrible customer services. I had AT&T for 7 years, and Tmobile for 6 years and must say sprint is bad but compered to those 2, sprint is golden.

Well after spending about an hour on the phone with service techs at Sprint yesterday I now have working data.
I was just sitting here messing with the phone(I have wifi at home) went into Sprint zone hit activate and now the phone is reactivated. I was on the phone with three different techs last night after the first one borked data. Pulling batteries, punching in numerous codes in the dailer, rebooting etc.
So whatever...... I'm just happy to have data back......and I did just get three voicemails from the tech that messed up data on my phone. I feel pretty stupid myself for not just trying to activate the phone on my own.
I really don't want this to turn into a hating on Sprint thread. I've had a rough experience with them so far but everyone makes mistakes. Now back to getting this thing rooted again and find another badass ROM and kernel to flash and get to roaming!!

[Q] Poor Sprint Wireless Connection

I have been having very poor service in and around my area, Adrian and Ann Arbor Michigan. I also was recently in Anaheim, CA for Blizzcon, but I assume I had issues there because of all the extra people on their towers. When I do connect to 3G it seems to work fine, but is only one or two bars. I am often bumped down to 1x and still only at one or two bars. I have been told its Sprint's problem as they say they are trying to upgrade the towers here for 4G. However, this is going on about 5 or 6 weeks of issues. I would like to believe that Sprint would not allow tower issues to go on for that long. I wanted to see if I should check and/or update anything before I complain at Sprint.
ROM - Evo Deck 1.3
Radio - 2.15.00.0808
PLR - 60681
Kernel - Tiamat 2.6.38.8
Thanks.
I have the same issues. It gets really hard to stream music while I'm working sometimes because it drops down to 1X a lot. This has been happening since the summer but seems to have gotten worse. When I do have 3G its very sporadic. Sometimes I'll get as high as 1500 kbps and others down to 150 kbps. They can't use the expanding 4G excuse here cause my 4G is ****ing terrible. I usually get around 1.5 mb to 2 mb and I can't drive more than a mile down the road without dropping the signal. I'm getting really fed up with sprints service. I'm in Cary nc btw

You're not alone OP. You'd be hard pressed to find someone NOT having data issues. Also, every time i've called over the past 6 months, they only tell me they have tower outtages. Seems to be the standard BS.
I went into the Sprint store last week to raise hell. The employees seemed absolutely beat down by that question. The lady i talked to told me that i would just have to wait for LTE in 2013 because "data and 4G is bad for everybody"
I also tried most of their new heavy hitters(SGS2, Photon, etc). None of them could hit the market and all of them were searching for 4G. Things are bad all over man.
Here in nyc data is fine. Both 3G & 4G work flawlessly.

That is an absolute lie, and they tried to tell me the same thing. I don't know if you heard, but sprint is abandoning Wimax and switching to lte. This means they haven't added any new 4g towers in over 6 months, and won't be adding any new one until at least summer next year.

GN on T-Mobile Monthly 4G vs. GS3 on Sprint's NO 4G?!

Well, I just bit the bullet and pre-ordered a blue 32GB GS3 but I'm catching myself already having buyer's remorse. I know that the GS3 won't disappoint in terms of hardware; but I also know that Sprint's abysmal data performance will continue to disappoint. Some friends from work are currently on T-Mobile's Monthly4G plan and are quite satisfied with it ($70 for unlimited everything up to 5GB of 4G). The data speeds they get are just out-of-this-world (10mbps+!!!) However, by switching to it, I'd have to give up on getting an out-of-contract GS3 with them as it will be waaay above my budget. Google is currently selling the GN for $400 and I was thinking that that phone coupled with the HSPA+ network would be a pretty killer setup. Sure, the phone is inferior to the GS3 in many respects, but what good is a phone if the network that backs it is lacking.
Well, what do you guys recommend for a lost, confused soul such as myself? I remembered having T-Mobile about 3 years ago and not being too satisfied with their coverage; have they improved? I'm in Orlando, FL by the way.
Thanks again for your time...
tmobile doesnt SUCK so to speak. If you live in an area where tmobile is strong. It works great. The problem is usually once you leave the inner city they have horrible service.
Im not going to lie ive thought about going back to tmobile. The speeds are terrible on sprint. Im reluctant to let go of my gs2 because i can at least get wimax in my area. Bit the bullet and even went and tried the new evo lte, but returned it becase there is no LTE in my area, and sprints speeds were just absolutely terrible.
I cant blame you, the galaxy nexus is a great phone with awesome dev community. Just remember at 7-12mbps 5gb will be gone in no time!

T mobile does this as well right?
Even if you get to this point, I remember my 3g speeds being a TON better than my Sprint speeds.. And since I can't use 4g on sprint because it has it's own issues I don't mind.
OP I am on the same boat, I left Tmob from sprint and regret every minute of it because of data speed/network issues.
I've been calling Sprint to complain and they have been very nice so far and I have already started talking possibly cancelling and they have agreed to work with me(possibly waive) cancellation fee's.
I'm waiting for the GS3 as well but I think it will be too bgi for my liking, since the GS2 is pretty much huge.
Another option is to get the GS3 on contract, sell it for higher and buy the GN you want.
whoa guys I am not speaking of T-Mobile but simple mobile which can be found here www.mysimplemobile.com. There is no throttling with them and actually its primarily 4g but even there whack 3g is still better than Sprint. They use T-Mobiles towers and you are safe if you get a TMobile phone and use it on their network. Do yourself a favor and try it out. You can buy a smiple mobile card on amazon for like a $1 or $2 then get an old tmobile phone and try it out. I am using my Sprint blackberry world phone and it works fine with it

True but if you activate your new phone, they charge a 15% restocking fee to return it. Not willing to give them more of my money if I'm leaving.
I just feel like Sprint is raising fees here and there (premium data, TEP increase, etc) to compensate for their plan prices. T-Mobile for 2 lines at $169.99 would come out to the same as what I'm paying for Sprint after taxes.
I'm just so fed up with Sprint's data performance in Orlando. It's useless 90% of the time. One of the neat features of the SG3 (even though I'll rarely use it I'm sure), is the Picture-in-Picture ability and with Sprint, I know that'll be pretty much useless to us.

True and true. Only thing is that I have been using Verizon file since December and I use it pretty heavy with text and data. Really if they kick me off I'd be happy to try out that simple mobile
akarol, guess it comes down to what is more important speed or getting the sgs3 on sprint. i have been dissatisfied with sprint for ages, went to verizon to check them out and all they could do was sing the praises of the GN. so here in phoenix I ran speed test on the unit the dude had at the store and on 3g it was getting 3.5mpbs! only sprint's wet dream could even get that close. If it were me (and hopefully soon) I'd try and swing the sgs3 on tmob (or an unlocked one for simplemobile, they are looking good). Surely you have some stuff laying around that could pawn off on craigslist for that extra cash for the phone
Will Sprint's 4G LTE covering your area? I think you should give that a chance.
I get wimax pretty much everywhere I go where I live (Tri-Cities, WA) which isn't a big city or anything.. in fact, it's so small that they had to combine 3 towns just to call it a city, lol.
At any rate, I get anywhere from 5 to 10 mbps pretty much everywhere. The 3G speed IS pretty craptastic, but it's fast enough for buffer-free pandora/shoutcast stations and sync/app downloads. It all depends on your coverage area which you should research before signing a contract =)

Sprint 3G finally improving?

So I have been horribly frustrated with sprints 3G speeds since I got my epic. I live in metro Detroit. (Fairly large sprint market) and have averaged around 50-75kbps DL. With a 600ms+ ping. And there is ZERO wimax anywhere. I was getting fed up. Until over the last month or so I have seen 600%+ increase in speeds. I now average closer to 500kbps DL with a 111ping. And I have even had consistent tests of 1mb DL. Could this be the first fruits of network vision? Or other tower upgrades? Or somehow less traffic. I had considered it could be the newer ROM/modem. (CM10/FH13). Has anyone else seen recent speed increases?

yeah man here in st pete i finally saw a consistent 1 meg down and i was inside ( but near a window) the network map said theres about to be another speed increase here its usually a lie tho.... i doubt its anything permanent sprint fails im moving to straight talk once its all over but im supposed to have lte in my area at the end of my contract and i got employee plan pricing if i have lte at my house then ill keep them if not oh well. could network vision not just be a giant false marketing scheme?
edit well i just did a speed test and im back to the usual 300kbs lol lucky i pay a dial up price and get dial up service XD so i guess not. sprints the most useless unlimited ever. Even living in a wimax area the wimax sucks everywhere but the beach. ( where i dont even need wimax)
I have 5+ months horrible experience with Sprint 3G speed after last two days on roaming service came back this morning better than ever from 0.09Mbps download to 0.89Mbps download huge improvement sadly it last till this evening when service cut off came back horrible as always. :banghead:

+1, I have 1 year left on my contract. Next July I will re-evaluate sprint and see how things are going. If sprint stepped up to the plate then bonus I will stay but if its the same ol song and dance crap I am gone. Maybe this xmas I will do that re-evaluate of sprint and see what is up and just maybe I might buy off the rest of my contract, pay a etf and jump ship. But having to pay a extra 10 bucks a month just because of a smart phone crap aka 4g is bull**** considering sprint does not have wimax, 4g, lte or what ever here where I live and 3g is absolutly slower than dial up modem speeds.
Well Sprint Vision says that in the next 6 months a tower will basically be put in my backyard, according to their map. My contract is up in 12 months, I'll make a decision then.
I get 8kb/s out here in Toledo....
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Mine has picked up in some areas the past few weeks but its still crap in other areas and at random times. Its also still much slower than 3G from any other carrier. My Sprint 3G speeds are often similar to Tmobile Edge speeds I had 4 years ago but Edge was more consistent.
Every week my 3G speed changes, today I am getting less than 100kbps when last week or so I was getting almost 600. I am hoping this is due to them upgrading the towers and that is causing the inconsistencies.
Are you using updated maps to see this info or are you just using the maps on Sprint's website?

Personally I'm more concerned about getting 3g speeds in the 1.5 - 3 mbps range and the improved service that comes with Network Vision.
Really couldn't care less for LTE/Wimax with that. :silly:
Same crappy speed here.
metro Detroit here too, and I haven't noticed any increase. For some reason my phone now roams constantly. Hopefully not so much that they terminate my contract and force me to jump on T-Mobiles new deal.
3G still sucks here ...

Illinois/Chicago People - Help - Slow Speeds?

So this just started yesterday but right now my connection to the network is HORRIBLE. At home where I always averaged a 90ms ping with 25mb down and 4mb up I am now at a 500-1000ms ping with speeds around .5MB down and.5MB up.
I called T-Mobile as I just switched to the Truly Unlimited 4G plan and they said I'm fine, have zero overages, and they were 100% sure I am not being throttled.
Why do I have such horrible slow speeds out of the blue? Stock GS3, Rooted. I restored to a backup I had and that didn't do anything. Phone works flawlessly except for the speeds.
UVALH2 was the last update I applied via OTA/Kies.
Not sure..I'm getting weak reception of 3g/4g in a lot of places even in wide open places.. I'm by Morton grove Skokie

Would that cause this? How would I check for that? I just don't get how one day everything is perfectly normal and the next day it's like I am on 56k.
Well in 60657 data is fine.. my only guess is they didn't put you on the unlimited 4G plan and you are being throttled because when you call in, they refer to all of their data plans as unlimited. That's what happened when I called in the first time I asked for unlimited and the guy said "all of our plans are unlimited sir, did you mean unlimited nationwide 4G?"

No I'm on the Truly Unlimited 4G Data Plan. If I log into My T-Mobile it says 8.78GB used out of Unlimited (9999GB). I've even had it confirmed with an intelligent rep on the phone.
I think either my phone took a **** or there is a problem with the cell tower closest to me. So frustrating.

Try that and see if there are any towers down in your area.

Went to a buddies house in East Dundee (60118) versus my (60008). My data speeds were back to normal and everything was grand. Now when I return home it's back to 56k speeds again. If I call T-Mobile do you think they should know if a tower is having problems?
Just got off the phone with T-Mobile. It appears there is a problem with three of the towers in my area. 84 other people have already called in and they said an engineering team is working on it. I've been on these 56k speeds for the past two days already going on a third. Should I tell them I want my data fee covered for the month or what?
Anyways just glad it's their network and not my phone. Wonder how long this will take.

You aren't too far from me, I'm in Elk Grove (60007) and I have been getting great speeds, around 20 down. Sorry to hear that you are having problems and hopefully they get the towers near you fixed soon.

[Q] Extremely Slow Data Speeds - Out of Blue? Help!

Switched to the truly unlimited 4G data plan on the 5th. Everything was fine up until last night. I've gone from having an awesome connection to the T-Mobile network 90ms Ping, 25MB Down, 4MB up. To a 1000MS ping, 0.05MB Down/Up.
I called T-Mobile verified my unlimited was good and there was no throttle in place. I'm not even at 10GB yet. What could possibly be going on that could cause this? I'm rooted, Stock Rom, UVALH2.
Edit - Sometimes when I run Speed Test it picks me up in New York, Nebraska, Arkansas.. Really weird!
Working fine here in 60657

Def call back customer service.

Nope. I went to a buddies place over in East Dundee (60118) and my speeds were back to normal. It has to be the tower in my area is having problems? If I call T-Mobile shouldn't they know if they have a tower experiencing problems?
Hmm..

Seems to be going around. Im on throttled but before I did get throttled my data speeds were about 1/3 what they usually were (7mbps instead of 21mbps) probably going around everywhere for the day hopefully.

Call T-Mobile. When the prompt asks you why you're calling say Tech Support. Then tell the rep that in the past few days your data speeds have been 56K like. You know it's not your phone. They will then check the towers in your area and see if there are any engineering tickets/requests active. When I called after some searching the guy told me I was the 85th person in my area to call in and that there was an engineering ticket active. They said it could take up to 72 hours for it to be fixed. Tonight will mark 72 hours so we will see what happens.
I know if I leave my house and drive about 15 miles to a buddies house which runs off of different towers my speeds are normal and everything is fine. Something to do with the antennas in my area.
I'm getting what I think is normal in this area, not in my normal neighborhood so I cant really test any more. But it's at 2.5 so I'm happy for now.

Called T-Mobile a little while ago to see if their engineers had located the problem yet and if there was a solid ETA... Nothing so far the ticket has yet to be updated. She said things like this can take up to a week to get resolved and begged for my patience.
They offered me a $10 credit for the downtime. Here's my real question. Lets say this issue is not resolved within a week. Am I able to get out of my contract due to the fact I can't get my promised data connection at my residence?
Input?

Lol, no. I was in an area the coverage map rated as the best for voice and HSPA. I received only EDGE in my apartment and had frequent signal drops. I called T-Mobile every other day for three weeks. They won't do anything for you because the coverage map says you have service, and the engineers were working on a fix ASAP.
It takes a minute to be unthrottled
