hello
sorry for my bad English, I wanted to put CM 11 but I had a few questions:
1) I have rooted lg stock. TWRP after putting, I do a Wipe cache, Dalvik, Data / Factory Reset? (Or just Data?)
2) the wifi 5 ghz does it work?
3) as the speed and fluidity is similar to the GPE? (I have a nexus 5 and would like a similar experience)
4) should wait for the porting of GPE or this is better in your opinion?
thanks

1 after installing twrp make a data wipe/factory reset, its the only wipe you need, it clears the data folder, cache and dalvic cache
2 the wifi ofc is working
3 i dont know as i dont have a gpe but they are identical devices both with 4.4 kitkat so why the speed should be different?
4 cm gets every day nightlies updates and its maybe the most popular custom rom. it surely has better support than the ported version of gpe. you could flash cyanogen mod or some other custom rom and when the gpe version is out you can switch to it

I think that you can not permantly delete an app using titanium backup. Deleting an app is dangerous because the tablet might not respond if you uninstall a critical app. You can freeze them though and if the tablet behaves weird you can defroze them. In TiBa go to the Backup/Restore tab and find the app you want to freeze, select it and press freeze. This is the best way to do in order to kill the app and never let it run in the process again.

Try flashing famigo gapps from xda. It gives you the choice to remove certain apps from popular roms as well as choose exactly which gapps you want.

hi guys
srry for being a noob here
i just rooted my Desire HD for the first time + ENG-S-Off and radio off
and i want to install a rom and i am having trouble choosing between android rev hd 3.5 or CyanogenMod 7/
any suggestions?
I would personally recommend you to try either Cyanogen or MIUI roms, they are very nice. I am not sure which are exactly available for your device, however. Android Rev seems pretty nice, has the basic HTC look. It's best to try them out first hand, and it's real easy once you back up your rom. Once backed up, if you are ever displeased, you can revert to exactly where you were on the old rom.

Technically, in the manner you're thinking, you can't just choose. However, once you've flashed the rom & done a backup, you can just restore it at any given point. I have a couple of backups I go between, mainly CM7 & MIUI. If I wanted to switch back to CM7 right now, I'd just boot into recovery & nandroid restore. If you want to be able to do that, I would set it up how you like it first - restore your apps with Titanium Backup, set up your homescreens, etc then do your backup. Otherwise it wouldn't be any different than just flashing the Rom.
But really, I'd just try a bunch of different roms out & see what you like. Before flashing, you need to wipe data, cache & dalvik cache at the least. You do this by booting into recovery (I'm not sure of the method for your phone) and choosing wipe. Then choose what you want to wipe. Don't wipe the SD card. I believe in Clockwork Mod, dalvik is under advanced.
If you don't understand this, then you need to read more before flashing anything. Knowledge is your friend... and the best bet against a bricked device.
Good luck!

I have a hero and have used CM6 and CM7 as well a asopCmod ROMs and if my phone's hardware would be better I've been using MIUI I heard pretty cool things about that Rom!!
Just test them out. You dont have to stick with the first one you pick. I think that within the first week of me rooting my evo, I changed roms every day and sometimes two or three times a day, lol. You just have to find the one that has / does not have the things you want.

Basically a nandroid backup is just a fancy word for going into clockworkmod and selecting backup, its actually easier still to download Tom manager from the market and click backup in that app, its so easy when you know how

This is assuming that you are using ClockworkMod Recovery
1. Power off phone
2. Hold down the Power button + Volume down
3. When the white screen comes up, wait for it to do the PC36IMG steps
4. Volume down or up ( will move your option you want ) to RECOVERY the press power button ( power button is always to select your selection )
5. Select backup and restore
6. Select backup
7. wait for process to complete
* your backup will be stored with a dateTime stamp. so if you do multiple backups or backup different roms, you have to remember what date and time that you did them. I have not tried to edit the name of the backup yet.
The above steps are considered a "nandroid" backup, if Im not mistaken.
Now for the wipe process ( these are what I do for each new rom )
1. - 4. are same as above
5. select wipe data/factory reset
6. Select Yes -- delete all user data
7. Select Wipe cache partition
8. Select Yes - Wipe Cache
9. Select advanced
10. Select wipe dalvik cache
11. Select Yes - wipe dalvic cache
12. Select Wipe Battery Stats
13. Select Yes - wipe battery stats
Those steps will give you a clean slate for your new rom to be installed on.
Use rom manager to manage backups stored on the sd card, it can safely change the name into a format that clockworkmod can use (ie.no spaces)
In all respect you really should use rom manager its a great tool, and free from the makers of clockworkmod so intergrates well

I am kind of stuck and have searched endlessly...
I am rooted and running AOKP - d2att (4.2.1 JOP40D) Build 1.17.2013
AT&T Samsung Galaxy SIII i747
I am trying to update the Rom - Everytime I have updated, I get the "unfortunately, android keyboard (aosp) has stopped" error. I just restore a backup and go to my older version again.
I was preparing to make another backup and noticed I'm out of space, my System Data is taking up 7,938MB!!! I have no idea why or how it got so out of control. I attempted to just do a Factory Reset, it looked as if it worked... however nothing was wiped.
Right now I'm just at a crossroads. I like the custom Rom (minus some serious flaws) but want to be able to update and have some free space. But I'm starting to think returning it to the stock firmware and just settling might be easier?
Any ideas on where I can clear up some space or what I can do to battle the AOSP error? Is there another Rom that may be a better choice, iI know they aren't "better" but an equal alternative maybe. I'm fairly new to all of this but have a decent understanding, I made a switch to Android after owning purely Iphones since the 3G.

Once I download the update I reboot into recovery. wipe cache and dalvik cache. I make a backup and then..
-install zip from sdcard
-choose zip from sdcard
then pick the downloaded update and then repeat the process with the gapps.
Once it loads, all my contacts and things appear there.. with the AOSP error.
I think after explaining this and reading your post, I should do a full wipe and install the newest version of the ROM. I hate to be a pest, what would be the best way to do this. I have Titanium Backup Pro. I really only care about my contacts and text messages and some apps.

You have have to flash the updated gapps if you aren't. They are made for 4.2.2 and nothing earlier. If you flash the same gapps as you flashed earlier you'll get loads of issues.

Ok, so I have ran the update gapps as well previously. A current status update. I backed up all my pictures, contacts and ran backup of system data with Titanium Pro. I wiped cache, cleared the Delvik cache, wiped data.. just realized I wasn't going into Mounts and Storage and not doing a format /system. That might explain why it was getting so massive. After doing those in the correct order, I flashed the ROM and Gapps and new Kernal. Its currently booting...
Success.. Its up and running the new Rom, however.. I have a new question. I have no apps and everything is back to how it all started. I know I can run titanium backup and restore things. But google is automatically installing my apps back one by one. There has to be a correct way to do this? I'm patiently waiting for it to install titanium so I can restore my texts and settings.

you dont have to make a backup every single time you want to update. thats whats taking up all your internal memory. i have 1 stock backup that i made the day i flashed aokp 4.1.2 and then 1 backup of my current setup. if i ever want/need to restore, i'm all set. if you want to make a backup every single time, move the older files to your PC and keep your most recent 1 or 2 on the phone. that'll give you enough space to move forward

Google restoring apps is an option you set during the one time initial setup.
you shouldn't be restoring system data, and it sounds like you're doing that. there are apps to restore texts easily. one that I use is sms backup and restore, which works well and takes maybe a minute.
it's cumbersome to remember every setting so I'd suggest writing them down or something similar.

After flashing my first custom ROM half a year ago life been great. However, with 4.3 in the pipelines, now seems like a good time to update and wait for 4.3 or maybe KLP.
So some questions before I take the jump:
1) Sweep2wake. I really like it, but is it a large battery drain?
2) TWRP and CWM. Any significant difference (for casuals)? I betting it doesn't so, TWRP updater suggestions?
3) Junk files. My phone came with a crappy Chinese Sense ROM and there were some files leftover. What are non-essential folders and is there a app to do it for me?
4) Good utilities/tools. I know a few renown ones like Titanium Backup and Tasker, but it's always good to know more.
Thanks in advance for taking you time to read this! :victory:

Wait for 4.3? Plenty OASP ROMs based on it just now.
If you mean an official 4.3 that's VERY unlikely, and there isn't a chance in hell we'll see an official KLP.
I expect AOSP KLP to be available though. They'll have it on old Nexus 7 at least, and that's port-able to HOX, mostly.
Your questions:
1) No.
2) Use Philz Advanced Touch Recovery. It can backup AND restore in BOTH TWRP and CWM formats amongst MANY other things.
3) Non-essential folders? You''ll be completely wiping the phone if you move to 4.3 anyways. You won't be keeping the installed apps or data intact it won't even boot for you.
4) BetterBatteryStats. GSam Battery Monitor. Trickster MOD. Battery Monitor Widget. Greenify. SManager. And I would also consider Superbeam an essential.

1) Yay!
2) Thanks I will check that out, but I am also looking for something like ROM Manager for updating my recovery to the latest version.
3) "Complete" wipe apparently means "Wipe Cache, Dalvik, Factory Reset and System" cuz "If you click anything else, IT WILL WIPE YOUR SD CARD AND YOU WILL HAVE MORE ISSUES ON YOUR HEAD!" that's what I did and I still had a few files leftover. Just junk files taking up ma space

Hi
I have been using the stock HTC Sense Android releases since I bought my phone about 1.5 years ago. Now that HTC, according the rumors, are no longer updating the HTC One X, I have decided to use CyanogenMod instead. For now I am using the stable 10.2 release, but I am planning on installing the 11.0 nighly, just to try it out. If the current nightly is working great for me I might keep it.
The only thing that I am concerned about is my apps and data. According to the posts in the ROM-section I can just flash a new release on top of an old one, but what will have happen to my data, settings and apps? Will the stay on the phone just like with the OTA-updates from HTC?

Yes All the data on the "sdcard" is still gonna be there.
Images, music, or something you downloaded is still going to be there.
However you will lose apps, and their data.
Usually we back them up using Titanium Backup. (Requires Root)
Restoring System apps' Data isn't recommanded for CM 11.0
If you got more questions, I'll answer them.
I wish you good luck

Hi
Thanks for the quick response.
I know that the data that is on my "sdcard" will stay as they are, but all apps that I download from Google Play are installed in the NAND-memory and normally when I change the ROM I do a wipe data/factory reset from CWM recovery.
But as stated in this post I can do the following when switching between CM11.0 releases:
Upgrading from earlier version of CyanogenMod 11.0:
Copy the CM 11.0 zip to your SD card
Boot into Recovery
DO A BACKUP
Flash the CM 11.0 zip from SD card
Flash the boot.img included in the CM 11.0 zip via Fastboot if necessary. If in doubt, flash it.
Reboot

I believe it's better to wipe data, and cache.
I am not sure if it works without wiping data and cache, and also not sure if it doesn't remove your apps.
So again, if you're rooted, just install Titanium backup. and follow the usual steps to flash the rom.
So I have decided to finally root my Galaxy S III, and I haven't installed a custom ROM since my Galaxy S days a few years back, so I am a little iffy on certain things. I was successfully able to root it and everything, I just have a quick question about backing up. When installing a custom ROM and wiping everything, I will lose everything on my phone currently correct? This includes music, photos, etc? I have backed up my phone using Titanium Backup Pro, but I am assuming since that is just for data and apps, that won't include my music and photos on my internal storage, correct? So, will I need to manually back those up? Thank you for help. Also any suggestions ROM's would be helpful; I was thinking of flashing Masterpiece V7 since that is based off of Cyanogen 11 with KitKat 4.4.4. Thanks once again!
Internal sdcard wont be wiped unless you factory reset while stock recovery is installed. Still, you should always have a backup of ALL your important data. Things can always go wrong. You are never guaranteed anything.
Ah, so my internal storage won't be wiped when I perform a factory data/reset using CWM Recovery? That's mandatory since this will be my first ROM install, correct?

We cannot "recommend" any specific ROMS here since everybody's needs and usability requirements are different and we don't want to take away from other developers who have worked hard on their ROMS. I can however suggest not to go with 4.4.4 because it can make rooting and modding more difficult and it adds absolutely nothing to the 4.4.2 usability. It just adds some security features. If you like stock and TW, go with a stock based ROM. if you don't like all that bloatware and want a more "pure android" experience, go with a AOSP based ROM. But I would suggest just trying a few out until you find one that you like.
Ah, so my internal storage won't be wiped when I perform a factory data/reset using CWM Recovery? That's mandatory since this will be my first ROM install, correct?

From my experience, you don't have to do a factory reset if you are going from a TW based ROM to TW or AOSP to AOSP of the same or new version of android (4.3 -> 4.3 or 4.2 -> 4.3), although it is generally recommended. But you do have to factory reset when switching between AOSP, AOKP and TW or downgrading versions.
