[Q] HouseCleaning Questions - HTC One X

After flashing my first custom ROM half a year ago life been great. However, with 4.3 in the pipelines, now seems like a good time to update and wait for 4.3 or maybe KLP.
So some questions before I take the jump:
1) Sweep2wake. I really like it, but is it a large battery drain?
2) TWRP and CWM. Any significant difference (for casuals)? I betting it doesn't so, TWRP updater suggestions?
3) Junk files. My phone came with a crappy Chinese Sense ROM and there were some files leftover. What are non-essential folders and is there a app to do it for me?
4) Good utilities/tools. I know a few renown ones like Titanium Backup and Tasker, but it's always good to know more.
Thanks in advance for taking you time to read this! :victory:

Wait for 4.3? Plenty OASP ROMs based on it just now.
If you mean an official 4.3 that's VERY unlikely, and there isn't a chance in hell we'll see an official KLP.
I expect AOSP KLP to be available though. They'll have it on old Nexus 7 at least, and that's port-able to HOX, mostly.
Your questions:
1) No.
2) Use Philz Advanced Touch Recovery. It can backup AND restore in BOTH TWRP and CWM formats amongst MANY other things.
3) Non-essential folders? You''ll be completely wiping the phone if you move to 4.3 anyways. You won't be keeping the installed apps or data intact it won't even boot for you.
4) BetterBatteryStats. GSam Battery Monitor. Trickster MOD. Battery Monitor Widget. Greenify. SManager. And I would also consider Superbeam an essential.

All the 4.3 ROMs are nightlies, and my preferred ROMs, PA and ICJ, don't even have nightlies yet.
1) Yay!
2) Thanks I will check that out, but I am also looking for something like ROM Manager for updating my recovery to the latest version.
3) "Complete" wipe apparently means "Wipe Cache, Dalvik, Factory Reset and System" cuz "If you click anything else, IT WILL WIPE YOUR SD CARD AND YOU WILL HAVE MORE ISSUES ON YOUR HEAD!" that's what I did and I still had a few files leftover. Just junk files taking up ma space
4) Ohh thanks, I already had Greenify, will check the rest out.

You can't use ROM Manager unless your HOX is S-Off.

Well darn, I'm guessing no luck with a TWRP updater either then :/
I suppose I will have to manually update the recovery then.
EDIT: Would GooManager work?

No. You cannot flash recovery on an S-On HOX with ANY app on the phone, it MUST be done from fastboot.

General help - Coming from a OG Evo

I am an OG Evo owners and just getting back into flashing and trying out different roms. Back when I would flash custom roms, the tool of choice for backing up data+apps was Titanium backup. Has this changed?
I am on Blazer 1.7 right now and would like to update to 1.9 but I don't want to lose all of my data and apps. He says something in his OP about there being an update.zip, but I don't see it anywhere. Is this pretty common for devs to include a update.zip that lets you seamlessly upgrade from version to version of the same custom rom?
With the OG Evo, you couldn't back up data from a ASOP rom and then flash over to a sense ROM and restore your data or else it would crap out on you. Is there anything that I need to watch out for in that respect?
So I have two questions
1. How do I retain my apps and information going from the same custom rom to a updated version of that custom rom?
2. How do I retain my apps and information going form one custom rom to another custom rom?
Thanks!
Hi and welcome to this awesome phone! XD
I too came from an OG EVO, was sporting Warm twopointthree back then...

Nope, it is still the tool of choice and everything from the OG EVO applies. It's a universal tool and works the same across devices. Do a user app+data only back up from OG EVO and restore it on the SG3. Do not restore system apps from OG EVO to SG3, these are the apps that are red or yellow font in TB.

I'm not on Blazer and haven't used it, maybe some one will come in and comment on this. You could try another ROM, like FreeGS3. It has a lot of positive reviews and is up-to-date with the latest OTA. The link is in my sig... You should have TWRP recovery for this ROM to install properly, the link is also in my sig.

The same applies with the SG3, this is because the system apps on the stock or TW SG3 are well Touch Wiz System.UI and framework and applying these to a AOSP ROM that has completly different System.UI and framwork will bring a lot of force closes and ultimatly an unresponsive device. You can restore user apps without issues.

There are a few options for this, you can "dirty flash" the ROM and you'll have the same setup and data as before the flash. This is just flash the ROM and only wipe cache and dalvik, but you should only do this when it's an incremental update from the same ROM. Although some say it is best to do a complete wipe and then flash the ROM even if it's incremental update of the same... One thing reported from some doing a dirty flash is poor battery performance or randon force closes, only way to fix this is a clean flash. Also, the dev (usually) let's the user base know if there was a change to the System.UI or framework and needing a clean install of the incremental update. This was also the case back in the OG EVO. Try the different options and see what's best for you.

Answered above, same applies.
Also, for clean install do the following, Wipe Factory Reset>Wipe System>Wipe Cache>Wipe Dalvik and then flash the new ROM.

Thank you for the awesome reply! Blazer 1.7 is awesome, smooth as butter and no problems with battery life whatsoever. I'm really enjoying it. The only reason I want to update is because of the pop up that I am getting about the new software update being available. I don't want to accidentally install the update and then brick my phone.

Gotcha! No worries here, just hit apply update and it'll reboot and "try" to install but it will fail since you have a custom bootloader. It won't brick the phone at all, unlike ye ol EVO :/
The thing that has bricked many SG3 has been flashing a ROM the international version... stay away from those.
BTW if you think Blazer is smooth, try FreeGS3, you'll be blown away haha
There's also a JB leak from Sprint in the dev section, I'm trying that tonight.

Haha I will be careful to avoid that then.
I have one more question. When doing a restore with Titanium backup coming from one rom to another (just switched from Blazer to FGS3), what restore option do I choose? I chose to "restore missing apps with data"

Newbie-Friendly Rom - Htc Desire

Hi,
I just bought HTC Desire (Htc_bravo) and Im quite unhappy with its bloatware. Im currently looking for some ROM and since it would be my first to flash, I need advice. What Rom is easy to flash and start living on (eg. market app included) with minimal chance of something going wrong (bricking mobile, boot-looping...) and with rather high battery life. Something to flash in a few minutes and live happily ever after. My needs are that of a common user. English localization is a must, working wifi is wanted. If manual how to flash this particular ROM is found somewhere, it would be great as well.
I was unable to find here a topic which answers my question completely.

Try MildWild. I have been using it for the past year, and it's fast and stable, with a simple launcher.
Don't worry, you won't brick your phone by simply flashing roms.
You are rooted, aren't you?
Then:
1. Download the rom, and put it on your sd-card.
2. Boot in recovery.
3. Do a Nandroid backup.
4. Do a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik cache, system, sd-ext) (Sd-ext is not the sd-card. If you don't know what that is, and want more storage space, check the partitioning guide in my sig.)
5. Select "Install from sd-card"
6. Wait.
7. Reboot.
8. Wait more (10 minutes)
9. Play with the rom.
If you don't like it, or something has gone wrong, then restore your nandroid backup.

Oh boy, here we go again. You'll have to root and s-off before you do any rom installing.
UPDATE:
Rooted it, S-OFFed (Through CWM), partitioned (through 4EXT) succesfully. Im ready for flashing MW. However, I figured out, that those two (CWM and 4EXT) could be messing up , when both installed at the same time. Just dont know, how to uninstall CWM and if it is necessary. When I run Recovery mode, 4ext says, he is in safe-mode and that he doesnt have acces to "system" partition. Should I worry about that? There is every wipe available but system wipe.
anybody?

When it is in safe mode just wipe all except sdcard and reboot recovery then it will have access to all partitions

Hey Juan,
I'm assuming you just got the notification for the OTA. You actually don't have to apply it to get the latest and greatest for our phone. All you have to do is flash Freeza's Stock Rooted Rom (You'll want the DeOdex MD4 Rom). It'll give you the most up-to-date Stock Rom with Root. I've linked and quoted a previous post I made which will give you directions to flash it. Also, CNexus has done a great guide about OTAs over in the general sub-forum. I suggest giving that a look-through.
Also, just a note on the flashing sequence below: In step 4 below, if you're coming from a stock Rom and you're going to a stock Rom, all you have to do is wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache. If you're going to a different Rom, it's best to do a full wipe (in my opinion).
Ok, let's start at the very beginning (it's a very good place to start).
Before we get started, I'm going to make the following assumptions:
You successfully rooted your phone through Odin.
You currently have a custom recovery (either TWRP or CWM).
You have a Rom you'd like to flash on either your internal storage or your SDcard (I'd recommend the SDcard, but that's your prerogative).
If either of the first two is not true, I'd recommend going back to qbking77's thread and check out the videos on how to use Odin to gain root and a custom recovery.
If number 3 above is not true, download a ROM (nor someone new to flashing/custom Roms, I'd recommend Freeza's stock rooted Rom, as it's identical to stock TW, but just with Root). Once you download a Rom, check it's md5sum to verify that it's a good download. Copy the file to your SD card and get ready to flash (make sure you have decent battery life left, I try to keep at least 50% or more when flashing Roms, although it shouldn't take too long.
I'll give directions on how to flash a Rom below. The instructions will be for TWRP, but CWM has similar options/settings
Turn your phone completely off (hold down power for 3-5 seconds)
Boot your phone into recovery. Hold Up, Menu, and Power for a few seconds (until SAMSUNG appears on your screen and the phone vibrates)
Make a Nandroid backup. I can't emphasize this enough. In flashing, it's almost a certainty that one time, something will mess up. When that happens, you want to be able to restore a backup. In TWRP, just go into Backup Menu and choose where you want it (internal vs. External storage). It takes my phone a few (5-10) minutes to completely backup my data.
In TWRP, click the wipe button, then system. This will completely wipe the Rom from your phone. Doing this will allow you to get a "clean" install, without any settings or leftover files from your old Rom getting in the way. Instead, you could only wipe data (factory reset), which is good enough for most Roms. I'd still recommend a system wipe, though.
Also while in the Wipe menu, wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Go back to the TWRP main menu.
Click Install, then find your Rom zip file (may have to switch from internal to external storage).
Let TWRP do it's thing.
If you're installing a TW-based Rom, chances are it had gapps already installed. If not, you should now flash the correct gapps package from goo.im. Make sure you're flashing the correct one, as if you don't, your google apps will force close upon use.
Reboot into system and give it time to boot (first boot sometimes takes a couple of minutes).
Set up your phone the way you like.
These should be the directions to follow whenever you flash a new Rom. Some Roms have the Aroma installer, so you'll have more options once you choose to flash the Rom zip, but those are typically easy to follow (and vary from Rom to Rom, so I won't be able to give you a good guide on that).
Hope this helps!

That's right, dirty flashing should work fine. If you're noticing any major issues (FCs, reboots, etc), you might want to use Titanium Backup to back up your important stuff and do a clean flash. But hopefully the dirty flash will be good.

Thanks Ed, I appreciate the feedback.
Thankfully, I put the hard work in a while ago, so now (for most questions) all I have to do is paste that one post and I'm good to go.
As an aside: yesterday I helped a friend root his GS3 and realized I'm much better at explaining things here on XDA than I am in real life. I kept jumping ahead of myself and trying to explain about wiping /system before I even explained what a custom Recovery is. I should've just asked him to post a question "how do I root" and I could've done a better job explaining it, haha.

Am I the only one with these bugs?

Hi,
I'm new here so please go easy on this "noob"
It was my first to unlock and root my phone, followed by flashing a stock ROM (Which is exactly why I rooted it)
I flashed this JB 4.2.2 stock build [ROM] [OTA][GSM] Android 4.2.2 JDQ39: Rooted | Galaxy Nexus > XDA for my Galaxy Nexus
Now...
I can't disable Next-word suggestions in the Language & Input -> Google Keyboard Settings
Also, I noticed a few seconds of lag when pressing the power button to unlock the phone, when viewing recent apps (via the soft-key), and when opening the Camera too
Also, when I choose the "Recent Apps" soft key.. it's as the app that's currently being used is minimised and the homescreen is shown without any icons
The Build came with Busybox pre-installed and now its gone after a day of using my phone... I literally can't find it.
I searched in the play store "BusyBox" and the result is 3 different apps with the same name!
Any Advice?

go back to recovery, format/wipe /system partition, reflash rom.
For your reference, a good app to install bb is stephen (stericsson)'s busybox installer (play store link). Obviously, it needs root.
Next time, read the stickies.

How do I get “root”?
If you are booted into a custom recovery (recoveries will be covered later), root is enabled by default. If you want root while booted into Android, you will need to place two files on your system partition: an “su” binary which grants root access, and a superuser app that manages that access. The two that are available are ChainsDD’s Superuser and Chainfire’s SuperSU. Usually these files are packaged up in a zip file that is flashable using a custom recovery, but they can be flashed manually using ADB. Both of these methods will be described below.

As you probably noticed by now, you didn't need to flash a full "custom stock ROM" to root.

I'm totally new to this rooting &/ flashing thing, so please go easy
So, what you're saying is that I should boot into fastboot mode, wipe system partition (this will format the whole SD card right?), install the same ROM again?
I guess I'll need to install Titanium Backup to backup my apps and settings, I'll have to search for an article for the best way to do it as well..
Can I do it like this:
Open "Rom Manager", Select "Install ROM from SD Card", install it.. ???
PS: Do you have a recommendation for a better ROM, perhaps my choice of ROM wasn't correct...

You can wipe the system partition in a custom recovery (dont know if you can with stock). And yes you could flash via ROM manager but I wouldnt recommend it. I am on XenonHD 11.1 and loving it. But roms are a personal choice so there is no 'best' ROM. Just try out.

The tutorial I followed didn't mention using the ROM manager, but I had not choice.. becuase whenever I went into fastboot mode manually, it got stuck on the screen displaying Google (I waited for minutes without any luck)
How would you recommend CyanogenMod 10.1.2 against the stock 4.2.2 which I have currently?
I read these threads as well whereby they said that there is no "real" solution to the issues:

I'm totally new to this rooting &/ flashing thing, so please go easy
So, what you're saying is that I should boot into fastboot mode, wipe system partition (this will format the whole SD card right?), install the same ROM again?
I guess I'll need to install Titanium Backup to backup my apps and settings, I'll have to search for an article for the best way to do it as well..
Can I do it like this:
Open "Rom Manager", Select "Install ROM from SD Card", install it.. ???
PS: Do you have a recommendation for a better ROM, perhaps my choice of ROM wasn't correct...

Mr., please, read the LINK i gave you! THIS ONE ->>>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812959
If you read it, you'll stop thinking you need to be doing anything at this point in FASTBOOT interface! Like mrgnex says, you need to be on a custom recovery to format /system. (Have you read the link yet? By now you should know that the /system partition and the /sdcard/ (aka userdata) are 2 different things!)
mrgnex said:
You can wipe the system partition in a custom recovery (dont know if you can with stock). (...) roms are a personal choice so there is no 'best' ROM. Just try out.

For your reference, you can't erase /system in stock recovery.

Stop! THERE'S NO NEED FOR FASTBOOT HERE!
Thanks Guys for replying.
Yes, I read the info in the link, it was very helpful.
I'm still confused though.. "Fast boot" and "Recovery" are they the same thing?
I tried a "fix" mentioned by someone about using a live wallpaper such as "Water", I tried it and it's been 1/2 hour and it's really smooth compared to before...
Yes, I do have a custom recovery, actually I don't know why, but It seems I've got two according to ROM Manager.
It says I've got Clockwork Mod Recovery & TWRP.
I also tried going into recovery (Volume up + Down + Power) and it worked this time, when I select recovery, it goes into CWRM
I also did a bit of research about CyanogenMod 10.1.2 and from what I could gather it's liked by people a lot.
I'm guessing that definitely some time ahead it'll get all "laggy" again, Is there any reason according to you why I shouldn't install it compared to the stock 4.2.2 I have?

So to get things clear:
No fastboot and recovery arent the same thing.
Vol up+down+power brings you into fast boot and not recovery.
Apparently you dont have 2 custom recoverys since you booted into cwm.
Cm10 is great. But there are many great roms out there. You can start off with cm and then (if you please) look further.
I dont see any reason to not install cm10.1.2 since a whole team built and optimized it. So basically it is a better stock.
When you think your phone is slow you should look into the custom kernels. Thats a different story which I will not begin before you want to

Thanks! Now it's definitely clear!
I'll download CM10.1.2 tomorrow and will decide to install it once Stock JB 4.2.2 starts acting up again.
In the meantime I'll read on about kernels, please keep don't close this thread...yet.

I've decided that I will test out the Rom that I have currently (4.2.2) for a few weeks, and then flash CM.
I wanted to know one more thing, Is it bad to flash ROMs to your phone every now and then?
Because I've seen people flashing different ROMs on their phone, I don't wanna damage my phone as I want it to last as long as I can make it.
(by "Bad" I mean... does it reduce the phone's life or it's hardware's life span)

No it can't. I was a flashaholic (until I discovered XenonHD) and my phone didn't got worse. Only overclocking the CPU and gpu can affect the life of the CPU or gpu (or both XD). Just do a fresh install everytime and read the post of the ROM of your choice to see what to do to get it working optimally. If you have any problems just ask.

I'll flash CM in a week or two, as I'm on a tight schedule currently, and I also wanna note down the average battery time I get out of 4.2.2
So... since 4.3 is now out, I was thinking it'd be better for me to flash it other than anything else.
I'll most probably download the stock rom from:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#yakjujwr66v
So far I came across this thread having the steps to flash 4.3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377307
But I wanna flash it and lose my data, so that it's as fresh as it can be...
Will that work if I use "wugfresh root toolkit"?

With the stock package there is no need for a toolkit.
Hell, there's no reason for a toolkit any time.

What was I thinking...
I apologize guys... I guess I wasn't thinking straight as its past midnight here...
So just to clarify stuff so that I don't end up doing something wrong:
-> Head into Recovery Mode (with usb debugging enabled... connect usb cable to phone and pc)
-> Wipe System
-> Wipe Cache
-> Install from SD card (select .zip file)
right?
Also, I performed a backup of the applications I have via Titanium Backup, They'll work on 4.3 when I restore them right? or do you recommend downloading them from the play store again?
Sorry for being such a noob, and Thanks for your responses!
backup everything from your /sdcard to your computer, titanium backups and a nandroid
the google stock package is NOT flashable in CWM/TWRP
if you follow the GOOGLE instructions it WILL wipe your device (remember that backup you made of everything?)
alternatively you can make sure and have adb/fastboot working on your computer properly, extract all the files out of the zip (including the tar.gz located inside), and in recovery, do a factory reset, then boot to fastboot, fastboot flash system and boot ....
as for Titanium Backup, there is a work around to get it working on 4.3, but root is lacking full power.

I'm now on Android 4.3
I'm full of excitement atm :victory:
I took a backup of my apps using titanium backup, I installed it but can't use it, it says I need root (which I already had before).
I read online somewhere that I need to root again, but I don't wanna lose all my data/ apps I installed again...
Any ideas?
If I use Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit... will I lose my data?
Thanks for the continued support!

[Q] SGS3 T999 - Personal Data, Apps, and New ROM(s)

Hey guys,
Love reading and contributing to this forum.
Question, I am currently running stock ROMs for my tmo SGS3 T999. I was thinking about switching to another slimmer ROM so I can further get more performance and juice out of the thing. Right now I'm running the Root66 latest 4.3 ROM and it works well.
So, one I was considering was the SlimRom (Here). Knowing that there might be issues with my data not importing into this ROM, what is the best way to preserve this as well as maybe import from stock to another ROM? Is it as simple as taking a Titanium Backup and importing it? Or, should it just acquire the old data and use it? If I decide to go back to a stock ROM, will my old data be retained even after using a different ROM for some time or will it get overwritten?
As an example of why I'd like to save/import my data:
For instance, I have a game that I've been working on for months. I'd like to preserve this game state data on any ROM I decide to flash.
Lastly, what high performance and customizable ROM would you suggest and does it require a non-stock recovery (i.e. CWM or TWRP, etc.)?
Thanks guys and keep up the good work!
Thanks,
Johnathan

If you intend to go back to Stock at some point then take a Nandroid before flashing SlimBean.
As to the Game Data etc, Titanium is your friend. Do note, if there is a System app that you wish to keep data then convert it to user app before taking Titanium Backup. Titanium won't be Able to restore the data for a System app. Particularly when the app was a System app on Touchwiz and SlimBean is AOSP.

Apologies for the noob response, but I suppose that Nandroid is a backup software? I also assume that SlimBean and SlimROM are the same.
Can things like Messages, call logs, email, etc be migrated from a Titanium Backup?
If I convert any system apps to user apps, would that include Messaging to keep txt's etc. as well as Phone for call logs?
Looks like I'll have to root my phone even though I've used Root66's ROM last so I can backup my phone... hmph.
Thanks,
Johnathan
Nandroid is not a Software. It is a Nand Backupyou create when booted into a Custom Recovery. You will have read here on forum or on Wiki if you need to know more.
SlimBean and Slim Rom are one and the same. To the best of my knowledge, Slim Bean is the Official Name.
Emails and messages can be migrated via Titanium. However best if you take a backup of these inside the respective apps. Typically they allow you to back on a PC. Do so for double effect. I do believe Kies has an ability to backup Call Log. But I personally have never backed up Call Log so am not sure. I don't think you'd have to convert Messaging and Phone apps since you are backing those details as above.
OK, thanks for that.
So, if I want to keep data from System Apps, they need to be converted to User Apps, does this include the Phone and Message apps so I can retain the logs and txt's?
Thanks again,
Johnathan

BTW, any experience with the PAC-man ROM (Here) or AllianceROM (Here)?
Seemed like a decent one since it include features from multiple other ROMs.
Thanks,
Johnathan
I have tried PAC MAN Rom just because I wanted to see what the Unicorn (AOKP) is upto. Realized it hates my favorite Kernel so left it. Honestly never tried Alliance Rom. I like AOSP and have no love for the touchwiz framework. My Current Combo is SlimKat Rom and KT747 Kernel.

I was looking at SlimKat.... they have the d2lte download that replaced the d2tmo. Would I need CWM or TWRP to implement this?
Also, that is the Kernel compared to the ROM?
Thanks for your help,
Johnathan
Yes you will need either CWM or TWRP or something similar such as Philz Touch.
I tend to replace the kernel of Slimkat with KT747. Nothing wrong with the Rom's kernel. Its just my preference.
Ok,so for any ROMs that are not stock-based, a different recovery is needed other than stock.
Why did you choose that Kernel over others? What does it offer that suits your fancy?
Using the XDA Developers app... OH YEAH!!!
Sounds about right. Do note, even for Alliance Rom, you'd need Custom Recovery such as CWM or TWRP. For terminology sake, any recovery that's not stock is called Custom Recovery.
I like KT747 because of the ease and flexibility it offers for profile based Overclocking or Undervolting. See the link in my signature for Undervolting just to give you an Idea.

That's cool, I'll check it out.
Apologies for all the questions... just thought that I'd get them all out.
One last one, I think... AllianceROM, I've seen several that have specific device models that it should work for... I can't find much about the t999 being supported with AllianceROM. I suppose I can't assume this would work with this model, correct?
Thanks again,
Johnathan
When it comes to Touchwiz based Roms (AKA Stock Based Roms), if it does not include your device, I wouldn't try it.
