[Q] Nandroid back up/Titanium backup questions

So what is the different between a nandroid backup and a backup using titanium backup? What is being saved with either? I hear using titanium back up is a "full" backup. What is titanium backup used for if you are already rooted...wouldn't you already have a custom recovery like amon ra or cwm?
If I do a nandroid back up on stock 2.2 rooted, can i do the same back up while I'm on a custom ROM? Where is this "backup" being saved to? Can i have multiple backups for different ROMS?

Nandroid is more like creating an image backup of your operating system, it backs up both your rom and apps. Titanium just backups app, their data and if you choose system settings.

In what situation would i use titanium back up with a rooted evo?

Titanium backs up your app and data from your phone. I am rooted and I use it when I need it, when I want to re install apps when I switch roms.
Using my HTC Evo phone which I'm using Xda app to post

Think of Nandroid Backup as a system restore point you would create on your PC and if for some reason you installed something on your PC and it makes your PC unstable, you can do a system restore and go back to when your PC was acting perfectly. (So for your EVO...you create a nandroid...messed around with your phone and screw everything up...Power up into bootloader (or reboot into recovery)...go into recovery and restore your nandroid backup)
Titanium is for you to back everything to your SD card right before you decide to WIPE DATA, CACHE & DALVIK/CACHE to flash a NEW ROM. After you flash the NEW ROM...your phone will be like a new phone you just received out of box...you have to set everything up on it. So instead of spending hours, you swill only spend a few minutes doing everything. 1st and foremost, sign back into Google Market, download Titanium and tell it to restore all apps...data, etc. Not sure if Titanium backups home and system stuff, I use Mybackup Pro and it does...it has everything configured the way I originally had it on the previous ROM...all I do is set up all my POP mail accounts and sign back into Twitter...Facebook...etc.

okay that makes sense. So whenever i flash a new rom, do I need to download titanium back (or MybackupPro) again on the new rom to get the data back? I can't locate the saved file from my sd card?

I use Titanium Backup for backing up data and restoring it on a new ROM a lot. Before I flash a new ROM I always do a complete Titanium Backup and a nandroid backup. If the flash fails I restore from my nandroid backup and if the flash works I load my apps back with Titanium Backup (that way all my saved data on things like games is there and I don't have to start over).
I will caution against doing a restore of everything on a new ROM though (mostly a problem if you're going from something like a stock Evo based ROM to a AOSP ROM). I've had some issues when I restored a few system files (accounts database for example). If you stick with installable applications you shouldn't run into any trouble though (also I've had no problems restoring my call log and text message database).

When you are in Titanium Backup, when you hit menu and select more you can create a flashable .zip so that after flashing a new rom or resetting the device you don't have to log into the market to reinstall. Makes life a lot easier.

[Q] Google services framework stopped after nandroid restore.

Hi,
After rooting and trying some ROM's out i wanted to go back to an 'old' ROM from which I had a nandroid backup. It went smooth the first time but the second time I got a error saying that Google services framework stopped working.
Only the stock app worked and none of my other installed apps did.
I couldn't even open the settings menu nor could i open Titanium backup.
I then reflashed the ROM and manually copied some TB backup folders but lost all other data.
Someone has an idea about this?

What ur recovery?
i had that problems (all apps was force closing after the restore)when i used a non working recovery, restoring the nandroid with cwm 2.5.0.7 solved my problem that time

I'm using Amon_RA atm.

Still no fix?...

try re-flashing recovery and then do the restore again. If you don't know how check the guide in my link.

Restoring Contacts from stock rom?

Hi everyone, here's my question:
I backup'd the stock rom before installing a new one and now I lost my contacts saved on phone (lol.)
I want to install another rom, after I install it, can I just copy files from the old stock backup to CM9? Where are they and it will work?

Titanium backup can extract everything from CWM recoveries, but be careful with restoring and first of all read the whole topic in dev section (if you want to transfer smth to CM9), there's a lot of useful info there

U can try to use AppExtractor, it enables u to restore contacts/sms/bluetooh/wifi from CWM backups.
DON'T restore system apps from GB ROM to CM9. They are not fully compatible.

You can use export to sdcard option from the contacts app. You restore your contacts list by import from sdcard.

i have the same issue here. it flashed a new rom on my sgy. yet i cant restore the backup i made using cwm. i tried to restore it via cwm>advance restore, and it resulted to boot loop. the i tried titanium backup pro extract from nandroid but it gave me "sorry feature only works on donate version blah blah.. any idea?

Simple
Just restore your original Stock ROM back and connect your Gmail account (Settings > Accounts & Syns > Add Account for gmail) and Sync everything such as Contacts, Browser history, Calender etc... and for your confirmation open Gmail from PC Browser and your contact will be there... then Flash your Custom or any other Rom and same step repeat.. Your all contacts will come back in original format..
I Hope this simple method will be better for you because i am using this method, its automatically add/remove contacts whenever you add/remove from Contacts.

[Q] CM 10.1 ROM Upgrade

I need some help upgrading my current CM 10.1 M3 ROM to the new CM 10.1 R2 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2217288). According to the R2 thread, the steps to upgrade are:
Using CWM:
1) BACK UP your current ROM!!!
2) Preform wipe / factory reset
3) Flash the ROM: cm-10.1-RC2-20130530-UNOFFICIAL-i927.zip (MD5 = 2e65e45bdc7539d5260062abdf6cd1cd) Mirror 1
4) Optionally flash GAPPS: gapps-jb-20130427-nonneon-tonyp.zip (MD5 = 13fc57e24ead77ec2613efd643af3800)

I'm still fairly new to flashing non-stock ROMs and using CWM, etc. My first real attempt was replacing the stock GB ROM (I'm on Rogers in Canada) to CM 10.1 M3. I have CWM on my Captivate Glide. Can someone please confirm if the following is what I should do:
1) Plug my phone into the computer and transfer using MTP the R2 and GAPPS ROMs to the internal SD card
2) Unplug the phone and shut off the phone
3) Holding the up volume key, press and hold the power key until the phone boots into the CWM
4) Use CWM to back up my current ROM*
2) Perform wipe/factory reset
3) Flash the R2 ROM
4) Flash the GAPPS ROM
If this is correct, I have a couple of follow-up questions.
*Will CWM back up my current ROM - including all apps + data - to the internal SD? If so should I clear space on my SD to allow room? I use Titanium Backup (the free version) to backup all my apps + data. Is that enough? Once I flash the upgraded ROM, how do I reinstall all my apps + data? Should I use Titanium Backup? Should I use CWM to restore apps + data? Will either CWM or Titanium Backup differentiate between system apps & data app?
I ask because I'd rather find out all the information I can before I perform the upgrade. So any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Pretty sure it's down?
Up is ODIN download mode.
Not 100% but if you get a little message in the top left corner then that is recovery, and a warning message about are you sure you want to flash this is Download mode.
You want recovery.
Since you are already on CM you should actually have a reboot option for going into recovery.

I know nothing of CWM and use TWRP, anyways TWRP lets you save it to external or internal and allows you to choose what you backup (system, data, sdcard, and etc).
I honestly just use Titanium and backup my apps and data. Since I store my roms all on external I can pop it into a computer if I screw something up and fresh clean installs seem so much well fresh and clean.

CWM probably is more macro when it comes to app backup, like backing them all up in one clump, while Titanium handles apps backup individually so you only restore and backup what you want.

CWM, there's an option to backup using old method, I can't recall exactly what it says but it will backup your entire rom into a tar.gzip file. The new method uses a blobs folder takes lots of space and to me, doesnt make sense. Backup using "backup to external SD" and to restore in future, "Restore from external SD"
Everything you put there (exempt you need to hold DOWN instead of UP as the phone reboots as mentioned above) is good to go.
Backup everything with Titanium backup but know that nothing like email etc will be recoverable between roms (at least in my experience). For Call Log and SMS use "Call Log Backup and restore" and " SMS Backup and restore" I find they are faster and beat Titanium.
Backup WiFi access points in Titanium and all of your non-system apps. Make sure to hand pick your apps to restore from Ti when your room is booted.

Thanks to both of you @Neuntoter and @yohan4ws for the replies. I upgraded successfully. I used Titanium Backup but didn't really need to. I just had to backup using CWM (which, @yohan4ws you mentioned, backed up everything into a blobs folder), wipe the data, install the new ROM, and restore everything. And it booted fine. I'm definitely going to try the tar.gzip method next time though. My whole 4GB internal SD was nearly filled up with the backup!

In the future, once you change the backup method to tar, you can use ES explorer to rename the backups that you have in the clockworkmod folder on your SDCard. don't use spaces though or it won't work.
This makes it easy to do a backup of your current working rom, then hit smsbackup, call log backup, (ti backup for whatsapp, games etc.)
I have a backup of ICS, PacRom 18 and CM10.1 all ready to go with all of my email accounts etc. all put in and labelled. So when someone has a fix or patch for a rom, I do a current backup.. restore to whatever, apply fix test etc. then i can roll back really quickly without missing a beat. for example, I wanted to make a call to my Dad on Sunday when I was driving home from the cabin .. I did a backup of my current CM10, restored ICS .. made bluetooth hands free call,rolled back to CM10.

How do you do a restore really quickly? Based on the time it took to do my backup and upgrade of CM10.1 from M3 to RC2, the prospect of switching roms from CM10.1 to ICS just to use bluetooth audio or duolingo/skype doesn't seem very appealing!

quickly is a relative term... as long as it takes to do a backup (of current jb) then restore (archived ics) then revert back to jb ...
i was on a highway cruise for 3hours when i did it last.... gotta make good with what we got, right?

[HELP] CM12 based ROM back to Stock Rom or Custom ROM

Good day!
I have been on CM12/CM12.5 and lately, I found out it's not working well for me. It's very buggy. I wanted to go back to either stock rom or one of the custom roms that I have, dr.Ketan v7 or Phoenix ROM 4.3. Is it possible? Can I request for a step by step instruction on how as this is quite new to me? Also, will my back-up (Super Back-up) SMS and Contact back-ups stored on my Internal Storage be erased once I flash the new ROM?

- Backup.
- Boot to recovery "twrp recommanded".
- Wipe ( Cache / System / Dilvik / Factory reset ).
- Then install zip , choose rom and flash it..
first boot may take minutes.... just wait it will boot..

Dont it need any mj5 stuff? The procedure you mentioned are like the instructions in installing CM custom rom, is it really the same? no need for Odin or something? thanks!

If you have TWRP recovery installed in your phone no need for Odin. You can download a flashable zip to phone and flash it using the twrp. Also I would suggest you to backup your sms and contacts. Infact do a full nandroid backup with twrp so if anything goes wrong you can go back to you last working state.

wow! great to know. I think that this will be easier. if I'll be making a full nandroid back-up, does it cover the SMS and contact? then i'll store it on my external SD card? or is it safe to store on my internal memory just like how my Super Back-up app works?
I know that this is a bit off-topic but, what's the best/recommended ROM for Note 2 outside CM?

Yes it will cover SMS and contacts and I would recommend you store it on your SD card. I had tried DN4 rom which I liked, it had features like Note 4. Now I am also looking for another rom to try, will let you know once I do.

sorry, will it also cover my files on my gallery? Would it also be redundant if I make a Titanium Pro back-up for my user app data then do a full nandroid back-up through TWRP Recovery mode? Thanks for accomodating all my questions! I'll look for the DN4 rom that you're referring to.

Depends on options you choose while doing nandroid backups, from twrp you can backup system, data, boot, efs, storage (internal, external). If your gallery is on internal storage then do backup internal storage as well. But since you plan to install a different rom backup you gallery, sms, contacts and other important files elsewhere may be on a computer so later on you can copy it back.
Remember nandroid backup is complete backup of your phone current state including the rom & settings while Titanium is individual backup for apps. So when you have a new rom you might want to restore individual app data from Titanium. Nandroid is for scenarios where you device becomes unusable or you don't like the new rom so you can easily go back to last rom & settings.

Thank you very much! will try your inputs! Appreciate everything. Now I'm torn between leaving CM12.1 to DN4 or stay for a while. Hope I could also figure out my daily driver.

Hi I successfuly flashed the DN4 rom from CM 12.1, however I tried to restore some files from my Nandroid back-up. however, when I tried to restore everything including data and system, it removed my ROM. what should be selected to be restore if I just want to restore my phone settings and SMS and contacts?

Did you make a backup of sms and contacts using Titanium? If yes you can try restoring from it. Also if you have Titanium pro you can open the nandroid backup and choose selective things to restore but better and quick is to restore your Titanium backup.
Note, as mentioned in earlier if you restore complete nandroid backup it will return your phone to last ROM state.
